Māṅgalyā, Sukhita, and the Companion Subhagā

Global chapter 445 of 51482 passagesSource PDF pages 180185
Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 180–185 (printed pages 166–171). Structure: Eighty-two continuously numbered Sanskrit verses in two linked narratives. Verses 1–25 identify Māṅgalyā and Sukhita with the liberated Devahūti and Kardama, recount Rāma's promise to become their son, and explain how eternal associates enter purified jīvas. Verses 26–82 trace the companion Subhagā through an earlier life of captivity but preserved chastity, rebirth in Nandaśarman's family, sudden widowhood, Nārada's instruction, a vision of Sītā–Rāma, worship of Sahajānandinī, and final reception of the Goddess's own identity and name. Summary: Janaka asks who Māṅgalyā and Sukhita are, since Rāma eternally plays as their son. Śuka identifies them as Devahūti and Kardama, liberated by their son Kapila. When they longed for Rāma's beautiful two-armed form as a child, he promised to fulfill their parental love in the Sārasvata kalpa. Yet all members of Sāketa's līlā are eternally real; their appearances work through exceptionally pure liberated souls. Subhagā exemplifies this mystery. In one life she was captured and placed among courtesans but refused sexual contact, sustained herself through music and dance, and died without abandoning her lineage's honor. Reborn as the beautiful, Rāma-devoted daughter of Nandaśarman, she was widowed immediately. A heavenly voice prevented her self-immolation and directed her to Rāma. Under Nārada she practiced intense Vaiṣṇava devotion, beheld Rāma with Sahajānandinī, and learned that love for Sahajā is the cause of perfected love for Rāma. Pleased by her worship, Sahajā appeared, bestowed identity with herself, and declared that the eternal companion named Subhagā would henceforth manifest through her.
