Rāma's Teaching on Bhakti-Yoga

Global chapter 437 of 51454 passagesSource PDF pages 146149
Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 146–149 (printed pages 132–135). Structure: 54 continuously numbered Sanskrit verses: pure devotion to Rāma, the relation of knowledge and dispassion to bhakti, meditation and Rāma-mantra, liberation beyond cosmic dissolution, the fate of divine and demonic dispositions, and the teaching's transmission lineage. Summary: Rāma extracts bhakti-yoga as the essence of all scripture and identifies pure devotion as unwavering love directed to his own supreme form. Because he is the ground of the imperishable Brahman and indwelling ruler of every divine power, worship of him reaches all gods as watering a root nourishes every branch. Knowledge and dispassion prepare devotion, but love may also descend by grace. Through remembrance, meditation, and the Rāma-mantra, the jīva enters the supreme Brahman and does not return. Rāma finally orders Vivasvān to resume creation and entrusts him with the ancient lineage of this teaching for Manu. Pure Devotion to Rāma

Passage 5

यया सद्यः प्रसीदामि वशीभूत इव ध्रुवम्। यदक्षरं पुरा प्रोक्तं ब्रह्मोपादानमव्ययम्॥५॥

I am the full and supreme Brahman, under whose control māyā remains. Every state arising from prakṛti abides in me.

Passage 8

Obstructed by their own misconduct and clouded by delusion, they neither know me as supreme nor truly worship me.

Passage 12

अनेकदेवतोपास्तिपरा अकृतनिश्चयाः। प्रवाहमार्गपतिता न तत्त्वं ते विदन्ति हि॥१२॥

Passage 16

शुद्धेन भक्तियोगेन न तु मां समुपासते। मत्स्वरूपैकसम्बद्धा भक्तिर्मत्प्रेमलक्षणा॥१६॥
