Passage 1
श्रीशुक उवाच— इत्थं सनत्कुमारस्य मुखादाकर्ण्य सर्वशः। श्रीमतो राघवेन्द्रस्य महिमानं महाद्भुतम्॥१॥
Śrī Śuka said: “Having thus heard in full from Sanatkumāra's mouth the supremely wondrous glory of glorious Rāghavendra—
Passage 2
नाम धाम स्वरूपं च लोकोत्तरमुदीरितम्। तस्य भूम्नः पुरुषस्य विष्णोर्ब्रह्माण्डवर्मणः॥२॥
his name, abode, and transcendent form—the mighty Puruṣa, Viṣṇu whose body is the universe, was deeply moved.
Passage 3
संजातः सुमहान् प्रेमा उत्तरङ्ग इवाम्बुधिः। महाभावः सुसम्पन्नः सीतारामैकगोचरः॥३॥
An immense prema arose in him, lofty like the ocean. It matured into mahābhāva whose sole object was Sītā–Rāma.
Passage 4
ततः सुस्रुवतुस्तस्य नयने प्रेमजं जलम्। ब्रह्मणश्चैव रुद्रस्य ब्रह्मर्षीणां तथैव च॥४॥
Then his eyes streamed with water born of prema, as did the eyes of Brahmā, Rudra, and the brahmarṣis.
Passage 5
देवर्षीणां च सर्वेषां तत्रस्थानां सभासदाम्। ब्रह्मणो मानसानां च सनकादिमहात्मनाम्॥५॥
So too did the eyes of all the divine seers and members of the assembly present there, and of Brahmā's mind-born great souls headed by Sanaka.
Passage 6
सहजानन्दिनीरामगुणलीलानुवादतः। परमेणोत्तमप्रेम्णा दृशौ तेषां पृथक् पृथक्॥६॥
As Sahajānandinī and Rāma's virtues and līlās were recounted, supreme and exalted prema filled the two eyes of each one.
Passage 7
विरहार्त्या सुस्रुवतुः साक्षात्प्रेममयं जलम्। तावत्तेषां वपुरभूत्प्रेमसंस्तब्धमुच्चकैः॥७॥
Tormented by separation, their eyes streamed water made directly of prema. At once their bodies became utterly transfixed by love.
Passage 8
स्वेदोदकैः समापूर्णं रोमाञ्चप्रकरावृतम्। स्वरभङ्गश्च सर्वेषामभूद्गद्गदकण्ठतः॥८॥
They were covered with drops of perspiration and masses of horripilation. Everyone's voice broke as their throats became choked with emotion.
Passage 9
वेपथुश्च प्रादुरभूत्तत्क्षणाद्विह्वलात्मनाम्। विवर्णता च संजाता विरहातिमतां सताम्॥९॥
Trembling arose that very moment in those whose hearts were overwhelmed, and pallor came upon the holy ones overcome by separation.
Passage 10
क्षणं ते मुग्धवच्चासन् विलीनेन्द्रियवृत्तयः। रामप्रेमाविष्टचित्ता बभूवुर्मत्तमत्तवत्॥१०॥
For a moment they sat as though entranced, the functions of their senses dissolved. Their minds possessed by love for Rāma, they became like the most intoxicated of lovers.
Passage 11
तेषां संरुदतां प्रेम्णा पुरुषस्य सदःसदाम्। अश्रुजैर्वारिभिरभूत् सुविशालं प्रेम सरः॥११॥
As the Puruṣa and the members of his assembly wept in prema, the water born from their tears became a vast lake of divine love.
Passage 12
तस्मादाविरभूदेषा सरयूर्विश्वपावनी। पीयूषवर्णसलिला शरज्ज्योत्स्नेव भास्वती॥१२॥
From it appeared the Sarayū, purifier of the universe, her nectar-colored water shining like autumn moonlight.
Passage 13
योगीन्द्रमानसमुदे प्रेमानन्दमयोदका। धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां दायिनी सुखदायिनी॥१३॥
Her water is made of the bliss of prema and delights the minds of the greatest yogis. Bestowing happiness, she grants dharma, prosperity, desire, and liberation.
Passage 14
ब्रह्मद्रवस्वरूपा च द्रवद्रव्यमयी परा। वारुणी देवता दिव्या सर्वतीर्थमहानिधिः॥१४॥
Her essential form is the liquid of Brahman, and she is the supreme substance in flowing form. She is the divine Varuṇī deity and the great treasury of every tīrtha.
Passage 15
तस्माज्जलसमूहात्तु समुद्भूता वराङ्गना। सुधासुवर्णवसना चन्द्रकोटिसुशीतला॥१५॥
From that mass of water arose a beautiful woman, dressed in nectar-white and gold and cooling as millions of moons.
Passage 16
चन्द्रास्या पङ्कजमुखी नीलनीरजलोचना। चम्पकाङ्गी तडित्कान्तिः सर्वावयवसुन्दरी॥१६॥
Moon-faced and lotus-visaged, her eyes were blue water-lilies. Her limbs had the hue of campaka and the radiance of lightning, and every part of her was beautiful.
Passage 17
स्वर्णदोलासमारूढा स्मयमानमुखाम्बुजा। गङ्गया चैव कालिन्द्या पार्श्वद्वयविराजिता॥१७॥
She mounted a golden swing, her lotus face gently smiling. Gaṅgā and Kālindī shone at her two sides.
Passage 18
सरस्वत्या धृतच्छत्रा स्वर्णदण्डावलम्बया। गायत्र्या चैव सावित्र्या चामरद्वयवीजिता॥१८॥
Sarasvatī held over her a parasol supported by a golden staff, while Gāyatrī and Sāvitrī fanned her with two yak-tail fans.
Passage 19
प्रेमानन्दमयी साक्षाद् रामलीलाविशारदा। तां जातमात्रां प्रययुर्लोपामुद्रादयस्तदा॥१९॥
She was directly made of the bliss of prema and fully versed in Rāma's līlā. As soon as she appeared, Lopāmudrā and the other revered women came to her.
Passage 20
अरुन्धती च गार्गी च मैत्रेयी चैव योगिनी। पार्वती च महालक्ष्मी रतिश्चैव तथा शची॥२०॥
They included Arundhatī, Gārgī, the yoginī Maitreyī, Pārvatī, Mahālakṣmī, Rati, and Śacī.
Passage 21
अनसूया भगवती दितिश्चैवादितिस्तथा। देवहूतिश्च मेधा च प्रभा विद्या च धीमती॥२१॥
There were also blessed Anasūyā, Diti and Aditi, Devahūti, Medhā, Prabhā, Vidyā, and Dhīmatī.
Passage 22
प्रीतिः कीर्तिश्च कान्तिश्च तुष्टिः पुष्टिस्तथैव च। दिव्यैः स्तवैः स्तुवन्त्यस्ताः परितोऽस्याश्चकाशिरे॥२२॥
Prīti, Kīrti, Kānti, Tuṣṭi, and Puṣṭi were there as well. Praising her with divine hymns, they shone all around her.”
