Passage 1
ऋषय ऊचुः— रामस्य यत्परं तत्त्वं वेदेभ्यः सारमुद्धृतम्। तन्नो ब्रूहि महायोगिन् यच्छ्रुतं विश्वमङ्गलम्॥१॥
The sages said: “Great yogi, tell us the supreme reality of Rāma, the essence drawn from the Vedas, whose hearing brings welfare to the universe.
Passage 2
किं रूपं किं च तद्धाम क चाविर्भाव ईरितः। एतन्नः श्रद्धधानानां ब्रूहि ब्रह्मन्नशेषतः॥२॥
What is his form, what is his abode, and where is his manifestation proclaimed? Brahmin, explain all this completely to us who listen with faith.”
Passage 3
श्रीसनत्कुमार उवाच— श्रूयतां तत्परं तत्त्वं रामस्य परमात्मनः। यत्सारं सर्ववेदानां शास्त्राणां च विशेषतः॥३॥
Śrī Sanatkumāra said: “Hear the supreme reality of Rāma, the Supreme Self, which is the essence of all the Vedas and especially of the scriptures.
Passage 4
चिदानन्दमयं रूपं महत्प्रावृड्घनच्छवि। वामाङ्गे सहजानन्दाविद्युल्लेखासमन्वितम्॥४॥
His form consists of consciousness and bliss and has the hue of a great monsoon cloud; at his left is Sahajānandā, radiant like a streak of lightning.
Passage 5
सौनासीरमणिप्रख्यं प्रकाशं तिमिरोपमम्। फुल्लारविन्दपत्राक्षं करुणामृतवर्षणम्॥५॥
His dark radiance resembles a deep-blue Indra-jewel. His eyes are petals of a fully opened lotus, showering the nectar of compassion.
Passage 6
पीताम्बरप्रभातप्ततपनीयसुनिर्मलम्। गण्डमण्डलसंक्रान्तस्फुरन्मकरकुण्डलम्॥६॥
The brilliance of his yellow garment is pure as refined and heated gold, while shining makara-shaped earrings cast their light across his rounded cheeks.
Passage 7
श्रीवत्साङ्कधरोरस्कं महाकौस्तुभभूषितम्। रत्नाङ्गदलसद्बाहुस्वर्णकङ्कणभूषितम्॥७॥
His chest bears the Śrīvatsa mark and is adorned by the great Kaustubha. Jeweled armlets shine upon his arms and golden bracelets ornament his wrists.
Passage 8
विशालवनमालाढ्यं रत्नग्रैवेयकान्वितम्। चूडामणिशिरोभासि नासामौक्तिकभूषितम्॥८॥
He is rich with a vast forest garland and wears a jeweled necklace. A crest-jewel illuminates his head, and a pearl ornaments his nose.
Passage 9
स्वर्णसूत्रसमालम्बिकिङ्किणीमध्यभूषितम्। गम्भीरनाभिललितं त्रिवलीपिहितोदरम्॥९॥
His waist is adorned by tiny bells hanging from a golden cord. A deep navel graces him, and three graceful folds cross his abdomen.
Passage 10
रोमराजीसमुद्भासि नीलरत्नच्छविच्छटम्। निर्णिक्तमुकुराकारकपोलालकसंकुलम्॥१०॥
A fine line of hair shines upon his body with the luster of a blue jewel. His mirror-bright cheeks are framed by clusters of curling locks.
Passage 11
कदम्बकिञ्जल्कनिभं कौशेयपरिवीतिमत्। षट्कपद्मासनं देवं तत्त्वमुद्राधरं हृदि॥११॥
Silk the color of kadamba pollen wraps him. The divine Lord sits upon a six-petaled lotus seat, holding the gesture of truth at his heart.
Passage 12
कटाक्षलोलनयनं सुवृत्तास्यं सुनिश्चलम्। योगमुद्राधरं वीरमुरोविष्टम्भभूषितम्॥१२॥
His eyes move playfully in sidelong glances, his face is beautifully rounded, and his posture perfectly steady. The heroic Lord bears the yogic gesture, his broad chest lending majesty.
Passage 13
रत्नसिंहासनासीनं भक्तानामभयंकरम्। योगिनां ध्यानपथगमगम्यं च कुयोगिनाम्॥१३॥
Seated upon a jeweled lion-throne, he removes his devotees' fear. True yogis reach him along the path of meditation, but false practitioners cannot approach him.
Passage 14
परे परार्धकन्दर्पलावण्यामृतसागरम्। उज्जागरप्रभावृन्दमुखेन्दुसुविराजितम्॥१४॥
He is an ocean of the nectar of beauty surpassing countless Cupids, splendid with the moon of his face amid masses of radiant light.
Passage 15
मन्दस्मितरुचिज्योत्स्नाजालद्योतितदिक्तटम्। कमलायाङ्गवीक्षैकसंसेव्यसुभगाकृतिम्॥१५॥
Networks of moonlight from his gentle smile illuminate the horizons. His beautiful form is lovingly served by Kamalā's singular sidelong gaze.
Passage 16
ऊर्ध्वरेखादिसच्चिह्नैश्चरणोद्भासितासनम्। दीनदारिद्र्यशमनं साक्षात्कल्पद्रुमोपमम्॥१६॥
The upright line and other auspicious marks upon his feet illuminate the throne. He ends the misery and poverty of the afflicted and is directly like a wish-fulfilling tree.
Passage 17
एकं निरंशकं शुद्धं कालमायाद्यगोचरम्। एवं रूपं महो नीलं महामहिमवैभवम्। यो ध्यायेच्चित्तमले स स्वयं परमेश्वरः॥१७॥
This one, indivisible, pure form lies beyond time, māyā, and all the rest; it is a vast blue radiance endowed with immeasurable majestic glory. Whoever meditates upon it in a stainless mind becomes the Supreme Lord himself.”
