Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 86–87 (printed pages 72–73). Structure: 18 continuously numbered Sanskrit verses. Summary: The forty-nine winds confess that even their cosmic force at dissolution is only a share of Sītā's power. They praise her purifying name, the dust of her feet, and her eternal union with Rāma; ask to fan the divine couple beside the Sarayū, at Citrakūṭa, in Ayodhyā, and throughout Pramoda forest; and describe carrying the fragrance of her fame and the dust of her lotus feet through every world. With devotion and humility, they take refuge at Jānakī's feet. The Winds' Hymn

Passage 1

The winds said: “At the end of an age we become immensely swollen and powerful, churning the waters of the seven oceans on every side and driving the new clouds called Puṣkara and Āvartaka. Mother, even this is only the weight of your power—how could that power itself be described?

Passage 2

Golden Mount Meru can remain standing only so long as the manifest world endures; when the wind blows freely at dissolution, even it disappears. Yet those vast powers are no more than flying atomic particles within your net. When offered back to you, this force amounts to nothing at all.

Passage 3

Your power destroys heaps of sin and purifies this universe; in time it removes the ignorance that leaves a living being insensible to truth. Called wind because it is the cause of touch, its absence makes a body a corpse, released from sensation and carried to the cremation ground.

Passage 4

The Gaṅgā and other sacred rivers possess greatness raised from the dust of your feet, while mortals possess their highest consciousness only through breath. Mother, when the host of your qualities is thus celebrated in sacred speech, merely hearing it through the hollows of the ears shakes away impurity.

Passage 5

Delight of King Janaka, your beloved is wholly governed by love for you and arose in the blessed lord of the cows' abode. May we winds, mingled with the Sarayū's water, sometimes fan the two of you when, wearied by love-play, the divine couple rests with closed eyes.

Passage 6

Homage to the two of you, the children of Sahajā and Sukhita: one of that pair is you here, while the second dwells in Daśaratha's home.

Passage 7

By your bathing, the water of Sāketa receives sacred power beyond thought. Entering that water and raising it into the clouds, we rain it down to purify people whose awareness has been destroyed by great sin and who are utterly overcome by impurity.

Passage 8

Mother, entering and passing through the hollow bamboo trees growing high upon magnificent Mount Citrakūṭa, we produce deep notes and quietly sing forever the qualities you display in Pramoda forest, O glorious daughter born from Nanda and Rājinī.

Passage 9

Entering quietly into people whose hearts move toward devotion to you and whose whole bodies burn with the immense heat of worldly pain, we give them breath and fan away the massed sacrificial fire of suffering in existence.

Passage 10

Mother, we forty-nine winds take the dust of your lotus feet upon our heads and scatter it through all the worlds.

Passage 11

We scatter it for devotion, for spiritual becoming, for prosperity among those who honor the earth, for the advancement of devotees, and for burning away the sins of the wicked.

Passage 12

Taking fragrance from the lotuses of your fame, we spread serenity everywhere so that the world may become pure.

Passage 13

Mother, as your exclusive servants we gently stir the forest of your play so that it may possess a special abundance of beauty.

Passage 14

We set in motion the breezes touching the ground along the Sarayū's bank, where the two of you stand with hands joined to one another.

Passage 15

Mother, when may we, pure in heart and joined to the warmth of devotion, humbly offer the two of you upon the riverbank the braided waters of the Sarayū, bearing celestial flowers and liquid sweet nectar, as water for the feet, arghya, sipping water, and the honeyed welcome?

Passage 16

Mother, when the two of you sport atop Ayodhyā's palace, your bodies perspiring freely from the married couple's play, we carry the fragrance that enchants the inhabitants of all three worlds. Fulfilled there, where could we go after abandoning your side?

Passage 17

Excellent one, we shall remain close by wherever the two of you may be—in forest or palace—bowing eternally with fixed resolve, while sandalwood and the other trees bend their bodies and fruit-laden crowns before you.

Passage 18

Having spoken thus, the foremost winds, their loving minds turned toward humility and filled with a special upsurge of devotion, took refuge at the lotus feet of King Janaka's daughter.”
