Passage 1
वरुण उवाच— कूप्याः सरस्याः सरितां यथापः समुद्रमेव प्रविशन्ति सर्वाः। उच्चावचास्त्वयि सर्वेऽपि भावाः प्रविश्यास्तं यान्ति नित्यस्वरूपे॥१॥
Varuṇa said: “Just as all waters—from wells, lakes, and rivers—enter the ocean alone, so every higher and lower state enters you and comes to rest in your eternal nature.
Passage 2
यथा जलोत्थं मलमावृणोति जलस्वरूपं सर्वतः सम्प्लुतं यत्। त्वदुद्भवा देवि तथैव माया त्वामावृणीते व्यापिकां ब्रह्मरूपाम्॥२॥
Just as impurity arising from water covers water's own nature though water pervades it on every side, so māyā arising from you, Goddess, covers you who are all-pervading and formed of Brahman.
Passage 3
क्षारास्तथा मधुराः सत्य आपो न माधुर्यं क्वचन व्यभिचरन्ति। एवं भावाः सदसद्रूपिणोऽपि न ते सत्तां व्यभिचरन्ति कुत्रचित्॥३॥
Waters may truly be saline or sweet, yet they never depart from the nature of water. In the same way, states appearing as real or unreal never depart anywhere from your being.
Passage 4
स्वतन्त्रं च ते धाम नित्याव्ययं यत् सत्त्वान्तःस्थं भाति सर्वावतारे। तदेवेदं भासते शुद्धसत्त्वमन्तर्हितं तावकं शुद्धरूपम्॥४॥
Your independent realm is eternal and imperishable; established within pure being, it shines in every descent. This very pure reality appears here as your stainless form, hidden within.
Passage 5
त्वमात्मभूता जगतामन्तरङ्गा माया गुणैर्लक्ष्यसे नो पृथक्त्वम्। एकत्वे सद्विदुषां ज्ञानगम्या प्रकाशसे बहिरङ्गेऽपि चार्थम्॥५॥
You are the inner self of the worlds. Though perceived through māyā and its guṇas, you are never truly separate. Known through wisdom by those who understand unity, you also illuminate the outward realm and its objects.
Passage 6
विशन्नयोगोलकमन्तरानलः स्वरूपशक्तिं वितरति लोहपिण्डे। तथा त्वमन्तः प्रविशन्ती जनानां स्वावेशेन स्फुरमाणं करोषि॥६॥
When fire enters an iron sphere, it diffuses its own power throughout the iron mass. In the same way, entering living beings within, you make them shine through your indwelling presence.
Passage 7
त्वदाविष्टं मानसं सज्जनानां कल्याणैस्त्वद्गुणवर्गैरुपैति। त्वया विवर्ज्यं हृदयं दुर्जनानां मायागुणैराक्रमितं भवेच्च॥७॥
The minds of virtuous people, pervaded by you, become filled with the auspicious hosts of your qualities; but the hearts of the wicked, separated from you, are overrun by māyā's guṇas.
Passage 8
कारुण्यं ते प्रकृतिः सर्वजीवेष्वभद्रहद्भाति सामान्यतोऽपि। तथाप्यमी दुःखततिं भजन्ते स्वकर्मभिः सदविद्याविलासाः॥८॥
Compassion is your nature and shines universally toward every living being, removing misfortune. Even so, creatures sporting in ignorance undergo a succession of suffering through their own deeds.
Passage 9
निर्गुणा सगुणा च त्वं निष्क्रिया चापि सक्रिया। असौम्या चापि सौम्या त्वमेकैवानेकरूपिणी॥९॥
You are beyond the guṇas and possessed of qualities; inactive and active; fierce and gentle. You alone assume innumerable forms.
Passage 10
परा त्वं च पश्यन्तिका मध्यमा त्वं त्वं वैखरी सृष्टिरनन्तरूपा। त्वं वर्णरूपा पदवाक्यार्थरूपा त्वं तद्वृत्तिः स्फोटरूपा त्वमेका॥१०॥
You are Parā speech, Paśyantī, Madhyamā, and Vaikharī; you are creation in its infinite forms. You take the form of phonemes, words, sentences, and meanings; you are their operation and the indivisible burst of meaning.
Passage 11
यथा नभो दूरतः नीलवर्णं शुद्धादर्शे प्रतिबिम्बत्वमेति। तथैव त्वं प्रविकर्षेण दृश्येषु मायागुणेषु प्रतिरूपं करोषि॥११॥
Just as the distant sky appears blue and enters reflection in a spotless mirror, so through apparent distance you form reflections among the visible guṇas of māyā.
Passage 12
त्वद्बोधकं वाक्यमेकं वदन्ति ओंतत्सदित्युञ्चकैः सम्प्रयुक्तम्। तेनाशेषा वेदयज्ञाः क्रियाद्याः सद्वस्तुवर्गाः प्रभवन्त्यर्थदाने॥१२॥
The sages speak one expression that reveals you, loudly joined as ‘Oṃ Tat Sat.’ From it arise all Vedic sacrifices, rites, and every class of sacred reality that bestows meaning.
Passage 13
जपं तपश्चापि यज्ञादिकाः क्रियाः प्रकुर्वतां फलवाञ्छापराणाम्। श्रद्धारूपा त्वं मनस्यभ्युपैषि यथा शेषः सिद्ध्यति कार्यवर्गः॥१३॥
You enter as faith into the minds of those intent upon results who perform recitation, austerity, sacrifices, and other rites, so that the entire body of their undertakings may succeed.
Passage 14
जीवन्नेवासौ परेतो मनुष्यो यस्त्वद्रूपं क्वापि जानाति नैव। यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपोभिरनाशकाद्यैर्यस्यां भक्तिं स्पृहयन्ति प्रवीणाः॥१४॥
A person who never knows your form anywhere is dead even while living. The wise aspire to devotion to you through sacrifices, gifts, austerities, fasting, and other disciplines.
Passage 15
निन्दावादस्तावको यत्र मातः संजायेताज्ञानिनामासुराणाम्। ततो गच्छेद्देवि कर्णौ पिधाय तिष्ठेद्वापि स्वामिनं यस्त्वदीयः॥१५॥
Mother, wherever ignorant and demonic people begin to revile you, one who belongs to you should leave with ears covered, or remain only to defend his sovereign Goddess.
Passage 16
त्वन्नामनामृतसिन्धुमध्ये कृतावगाहो मनुजः श्रद्धया यः। तमुग्रसंसारसमुद्र एष सदोत्तरङ्गोऽपि न संस्पृशेदहो॥१६॥
Ah, a person who faithfully bathes in the nectar-ocean of your name cannot be touched by this terrible ocean of saṃsāra, though its waves rise without cease.
Passage 17
सर्वान् धर्मान् ये परित्यज्य मातस्त्वदङ्घ्रिपोतं संश्रयन्तीह भक्त्या। ते संसाराब्धिं शनकैरुत्तरन्ति ते वै जना ज्ञातशास्त्रैकसाराः॥१७॥
Mother, those who relinquish every other dharma and faithfully take refuge in the boat of your feet gradually cross the ocean of saṃsāra. They alone have understood the single essence of scripture.
Passage 18
यावन्न ते जायते सम्प्रपत्तिर्हस्तग्राहं नैव तावत्करोषि। स्वयाङ्गीकृतमेनं मनुष्यं श्रीरामोऽपि प्रभुरुत्तारयेत्किम्॥१८॥
Until surrender to you arises, you do not take a person's hand. If you have not personally accepted that human being, how could even Lord Śrī Rāma carry him across?
Passage 19
विश्वास एवाश्रयिणां ते जनानां संसाराब्धौ नावमज्जाम एव। यज्जानकीचरणसरोजयुग्मे आत्मोपहारीकृत आदाय सर्वम्॥१९॥
For those who seek your refuge, trust alone is the unfailing boat upon saṃsāra's ocean: they take everything they possess, make the self itself an offering, and place it at Jānakī's pair of lotus feet.
Passage 20
भारोऽप्यशेषस्त्वयि चेत्समर्पितो यो वैदिको लौकिकश्चाप्यशेषः। न वै तेषामिह चामुत्र किञ्चित्कर्तव्यं स्याज्जनकनरेन्द्रकन्ये॥२०॥
Daughter of King Janaka, when every burden—Vedic and worldly alike—has been entrusted entirely to you, nothing remains for those devotees to accomplish either here or hereafter.
Passage 21
नृपोऽप्यसौ भाग्यवतां शिरोमणिर्न ज्ञायते किं कृतवान् पुण्यजातम्। यदालयालङ्करणाय जातया लोकत्रयं शश्वदलङ्कृतं त्वया॥२१॥
That king is the crown jewel of the fortunate; no one knows what host of merits he performed. Though you were born to adorn his home, you have eternally adorned all three worlds.
Passage 22
अहो मातर्वयमिन्द्रादिदेवास्त्वत्सेवकानां नितरामिन्द्रियाणि। प्रविश्य नित्यं निभृतं पिबामस्त्वदीयलीलाश्रवणादिकाः सुधाः॥२२॥
Ah, Mother, we gods headed by Indra quietly enter the very senses of your servants and forever drink the nectar of hearing your līlā and the other acts of devotion.
Passage 23
अहो इयं मिथिलानामभूमेरनन्यशोभाकरणी बभूव। आविर्भूता यत्र रामस्य रामा स्वयं वै साक्षात्प्रकृतेः पुरुषात्परा॥२३॥
Ah, this land called Mithilā has become adorned with incomparable beauty, for here Rāma's own Ramā has manifested—the transcendent Supreme Woman, beyond primordial nature itself.
Passage 24
कीर्तिस्त्वदीया जनकेन्द्रसम्भवे गङ्गादितीर्थावलिपावनोचिता। येषामन्तः सम्प्रविष्टा जनानां त आवलीपावनपावनाः स्युः॥२४॥
Born to King Janaka, your fame is fit to purify the whole succession of sacred places beginning with the Gaṅgā. Those people whom it enters within become purifiers even of that purifying succession.
Passage 25
यस्याः कटाक्षस्पृशिमात्रेण लक्ष्मीर्नारायणस्याङ्कगा सम्बभूव। ब्रह्माणी च ब्रह्मण उमा शिवस्य तां त्वां श्रयामः सर्वसौभाग्यलक्ष्मीम्॥२५॥
By the mere touch of whose sidelong glance Lakṣmī arose upon Nārāyaṇa's lap, Brahmāṇī beside Brahmā, and Umā beside Śiva—to you, the splendor of every good fortune, we take refuge.
Passage 26
एकैव त्वं बहुधाकारयुक्ता रामेन्दुना रमसे रासमध्ये। तां त्वां परां भक्तियुक्ताः प्रपद्य स्वात्मानमत्यर्थकृतार्थाश्च यामः॥२६॥
You alone assume countless forms and delight with moonlike Rāma amid the rāsa dance. Taking refuge in you, the Supreme, with devotion, we depart with our very selves fulfilled beyond measure.
Passage 27
तवदाननेन्दुप्रभवज्योत्स्नया वयं यद्वत्प्रमोदाटविगाश्चकोराः। स्वानन्दसम्पत्तिसमुद्रमग्नाः शश्वत्कृतार्थाः सुभगे देवि सीते॥२७॥
Lovely Goddess Sītā, like cakora birds dwelling in Pramoda forest, we live upon the moonlight arising from your moonlike face, immersed in the ocean of the wealth of our own bliss and eternally fulfilled.
Passage 28
अधिप्रमोदाटवि देवि यद्वदद्विरेफमाला सुखिताङ्गसौरभैः। तथा मदीयेन्द्रियवृत्तिराजी त्वद्भक्तिसम्पृक्ततयास्तु मोदिनी॥२८॥
Goddess, just as a line of bees in Pramoda forest delights in the fragrance of your limbs, so may the whole array of my senses rejoice by being wholly permeated with devotion to you.
Passage 29
इदं परं सन्तते कामयामो वयं निजं स्थानमभ्येत्य मा क्वचित्। दर्पाचिताः किञ्चिदभूव यत्त्वत्पराङ्मुखाः क्वापि न स्याम सीते॥२९॥
Sītā, this alone we continually desire: after returning to our own station, may we never become filled with pride or turn away from you anywhere, even for a moment.
Passage 30
सहजानन्दिनीं तां त्वां प्रयत्नाः शरणं वयम्। ब्रह्माण्डानां कोटयोऽपि यस्यां श्रीपुरुषाद्बभुः॥३०॥
With all effort we take refuge in you, Sahajānandinī, within whom millions of universes arose from the glorious Supreme Person.
Passage 31
इत्युक्त्वा वरुणस्तात दण्डवत्प्रापतद्भुवि। रोमाञ्चिताशेषतनुर्भक्तिपीयूषपूरितः॥३१॥
Having spoken thus, dear one, Varuṇa fell upon the earth like a staff, his entire body thrilled with horripilation and filled with the nectar of devotion.”
