Passage 1
निरृतिरुवाच— अभूदधर्मप्रसरः पुरा यत् पापात्मिका सृष्टिरभूत्तरामम्। ततोऽपि संरक्षित आत्मनो जनस्तस्मै नमस्तेऽखिलधर्ममूर्तये॥१॥
Nirṛti said: “Formerly unrighteousness spread and creation became exceedingly sinful, yet even from that you protected your own people. Homage to you, embodiment of every dharma.
Passage 2
कलिः कलङ्की कठिनः कलाहरः सर्वात्मना पापरुचिर्जनुष्मताम्। यन्नामनादेन विलुप्तवैभवस्तस्मै प्रमोदावनिसुश्रिये नमः॥२॥
Kali is stained, harsh, destructive of sacred arts, and wholly turns embodied beings toward sin; yet the sound of your name destroys his power. Homage to the beautiful Śrī of the land of Pramoda.
Passage 3
भावाश्च ये काममदादयोऽनिशं महोर्जिताश्चैव महाबला नृषु। त्वत्कीर्तनात्ते विफलात्मतामगुस्तस्मै समस्तोद्धरणात्मने नमः॥३॥
Lust, pride, and the other passions, always mighty and immensely powerful among human beings, become fruitless through singing your praise. Homage to you whose nature is to uplift everyone.
Passage 4
नमो नमस्ते जनकेन्द्रनन्दिनि प्रमोदकुन्दावनकुञ्जवासिनि। नमो नमस्ते रसिकेन्द्रसङ्गते स्फुरन्महाभोगसमूहभोगिनि॥४॥
Homage again and again to you, delight of King Janaka, dwelling in the bowers of Pramoda's jasmine forest. Homage again and again to you, united with the sovereign of connoisseurs and enjoying the radiant fullness of supreme delight.
Passage 5
शृङ्गारमूर्तिः स्मर आधिदैविकः श्रीरामचन्द्रस्य मनोविमोहनः। तदंशमात्रः स्फुटमुद्गतो भवे चक्रे मुनीनां महतां विमोहनम्॥५॥
Kāma, the presiding deity who embodies amorous rasa and enchants Śrī Rāmacandra's mind, clearly appears in worldly existence through only a fraction of that power and bewilders even great sages.
Passage 6
एवं त्वदीयाखिललीलारसार्थं सम्पुष्टरूपाः क्रोधमोहादिभावाः। तेषामंशा विषयानन्दयोगाज्जनं निबध्नन्ति निजेन कर्मणा॥६॥
Thus anger, delusion, and the other emotions assume fully nourished forms for the sake of all the rasas of your līlā; their mere portions bind beings through their own deeds when joined to delight in sense objects.
Passage 7
पञ्चेन्द्रियाणां खलु याश्च वृत्तयस्त्वद्भक्तिभाजामनुकूलतां दधुः। ता एव लग्ना विषयेषु भूयिष्ठं लोकं पातयित्वा प्रवृद्धाः॥७॥
The functions of the five senses indeed become favorable for those who share in devotion to you; but when those same functions cling chiefly to sense objects, they grow by casting the world downward.
Passage 8
त्वं शैशवे जानकीति प्रगीता सीतेति चाद्यैः कविभिः सुधीभिः। तारुण्यमभ्येत्य च मोदिनीति प्रमोदारण्ये सहजानन्दिनीति॥८॥
In childhood the earliest wise poets sing you as Jānakī and Sītā. Upon reaching youth you are called Modinī, and in Pramoda forest, Sahajānandinī.
Passage 9
एकैकं ते नाम सर्वेषु वेदेष्वाख्यातं चेदेष लोको गृणाति। तस्यानुभावाद्याति भावं परं ते प्रेमाख्यं यः कोटिजन्मातिपूतः॥९॥
Each one of your names is proclaimed throughout all the Vedas, and this world sings them. Through their power, one purified beyond measure through millions of births attains your supreme state called prema.
Passage 10
यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपसा चातिमात्रैर्वृतः सुपुण्यातिशयेन कश्चित्। त्वत्पादाब्जं भजते देवि सीते तस्य क्षणात्सुलभो रामचन्द्रः॥१०॥
When someone endowed with abundant merit accumulated through sacrifices, gifts, and immense austerities worships your lotus feet, Goddess Sītā, Rāmacandra becomes accessible to that person in an instant.
Passage 11
शेषो रविर्वायुपुत्रोऽथ रुद्रः साक्षात्स्वयंभूर्भगवान् विरञ्चिः। इन्द्रश्चन्द्रः सनकाद्याश्च सर्वे जानन्ति त्वामीशि भजन्ति भक्त्या॥११॥
Śeṣa, the sun, the son of Wind, Rudra, the self-born blessed Brahmā himself, Indra, the moon, Sanaka, and all the others know you, Goddess, and worship you with devotion.
Passage 12
ज्ञानात्मको भगवान् श्रीहयास्यस्त्वद्भक्तिमात्रादतुलकः सदैव। गृणाति त्वां कुम्भजापप्रसादाद्यत्कुम्भजस्त्वां भजते नित्यमेव॥१२॥
The blessed Śrī Hayāsya, whose nature is knowledge and who is ever incomparable through devotion to you alone, praises you by the grace associated with Kumbhajā; for the pot-born sage worships you eternally.
Passage 13
स्वायंभुवो मनुराख्यातधर्मः सर्वं ते चाव्रत राद्धान्तमेकम्। त्वद्भक्त्याख्येन रामः प्रसन्नो नित्यानन्दं स्वपदं संददाति॥१३॥
Svāyaṃbhuva Manu, the teacher of dharma, declared your entire singular doctrine. Pleased by what is called devotion to you, Rāma grants his own station of eternal bliss.
Passage 14
नान्यः पन्था विद्यते स्वात्मलब्ध्यै नान्यो भावो विद्यते चापि लोके। नान्यज्ज्ञानं विद्यते सर्ववेदेष्वेकं सीतानाममात्रं विहाय॥१४॥
No other path exists for attaining one's true self, nor does another state exist in the world. Throughout all the Vedas no other knowledge exists apart from the one reality of Sītā's name.
Passage 15
ज्ञानं सीतानामतुल्यं न किञ्चिच्छास्त्रं सीतानामतुल्यं न किञ्चित्। कृत्यं सीतानामतुल्यं न किञ्चिद्वेद्यं सीतानामतुल्यं न किञ्चित्॥१५॥
No knowledge equals Sītā's name; no scripture equals Sītā's name. No duty equals Sītā's name, and nothing to be known equals Sītā's name.
Passage 16
एकं शास्त्रं गीयते यत्र सीता एका लोके देवता चापि सीता। एको मन्त्रश्चापि सीतेति नाम कर्माप्येकं पूज्यते यत्र सीता॥१६॥
There is one scripture, in which Sītā is sung; in the world there is one deity, Sītā. There is one mantra, the name ‘Sītā,’ and one sacred act, in which Sītā is worshiped.
Passage 17
सर्वे देवा यत्पराः सम्बभूवुः सर्वे यज्ञा यत्पराः सम्बभूवुः। सर्वे मार्गा यत्पराः सम्बभूवुः सा त्वं सीतानाम लोके प्रसिद्धा॥१७॥
All the gods have arisen with her as their highest end; all sacrifices and all paths have arisen with her as their highest end. You are she, renowned in the world by the name Sītā.
Passage 18
सीता नित्या जानकी मोदिनीति प्रेमा क्षेमा सहजानन्दिनीति। ध्यायञ्छृण्वन् सङ्गिरन् कीर्तयंश्च जन्तुर्नित्यं मुच्यते सर्वबन्धात्॥१८॥
Sītā, Nityā, Jānakī, Modinī, Premā, Kṣemā, Sahajānandinī—a living being who constantly meditates upon, hears, recites, and celebrates these names is freed from every bond.
Passage 19
पाहि त्राहि त्रिभुवनमिदं स्वाश्रयं नित्यसिद्धे पाहि त्राहि त्रिभुवनजनान् स्वाश्रयान् देवि सीते। पाहि त्राहि स्वरमणकरं रामचन्द्रस्य लोकं भूयो भूयो जगति भवती भ्राजतां नित्यमेव॥१९॥
Protect and save these three worlds that rest in you, eternally perfect one. Protect and save the inhabitants of the three worlds who seek your shelter, Goddess Sītā. Protect and save Rāmacandra's realm, which gives delight to its own Lord. May you shine forever in the world, again and again.
Passage 20
जगत्स्वामिनी भामिनी कामिनी त्वं जगत्तोषिणी पोषिणी रामयोर्वा। जगद्वन्दिता नन्दिता नन्दिनी त्वं चिरं देवि दीप्यत्स्वभक्तानवन्ती॥२०॥
You are mistress of the world, radiant woman, beloved; you satisfy and nourish the world and the two Rāmas. Worshiped and delighted by the world, you are its delight. Goddess, shine forever while protecting your devotees.
Passage 21
अये रामचन्द्रप्रिये पूर्णरूपे परा चेन्दिरा त्वत्कटाक्षैकरूपा। परा भारती भ्राजमानाभवे त्वं प्रिया रामचन्द्रस्य नित्यं रमस्व॥२१॥
O beloved of Rāmacandra, complete form, supreme Indirā is but one form of your sidelong glance, and supreme Bhāratī appears through your being. As Rāmacandra's beloved, delight with him eternally.
Passage 22
स्वाराज्यसाम्राज्यराज्याधिदेवी स्वानन्दसम्पत्समूहाधिराज्ञी। प्रेमानुभावप्रभावप्रसन्नाक्रोडस्व नित्यं जनानां मनःसु॥२२॥
Presiding Goddess of self-rule, empire, and kingship; sovereign queen of the gathered wealth of your own bliss; radiant through the power born from prema—embrace the minds of living beings forever.
Passage 23
चिदानन्दाकारं तव वपुरशेषागमगणैः स्तुतं वन्द्यं ब्रह्मादिभिरतुलभक्तिप्रवणताम्। प्रयातैः संसेव्यं गुणरहितया प्रेमकलया चिरं चित्ते मातः स्वयमुपरमेद्येन च भवः॥२३॥
Your body is formed of consciousness and bliss, praised by all the scriptures, worshiped by Brahmā and the others who have entered incomparable devotion, and served through a particle of love beyond the guṇas. Mother, when it abides long in the heart, worldly becoming ceases of itself.
Passage 24
त्वदीयं लावण्यं निखिलनिगमैरादिकविभिः प्रगीतं यल्लेशोऽभ्युदयति शशाङ्कप्रभृतिषु। श्रिया जुष्टेषूच्चैः प्रकृतिषु जगद्वस्तुषु यतो जनानां दृढमोहो भवति भवतो विस्मृतिरपि॥२४॥
All the Vedas and primordial poets sing your loveliness. A mere trace of it rises in the moon and other beautiful natural objects of the world, and from that trace people fall into deep delusion and even forget the source from which it comes.
Passage 25
अहो भाग्यं नरेन्द्रस्य जनकस्य यदालये। प्रमोदवनतोऽभ्येत्य परा लक्ष्मीर्विराजते॥२५॥
Ah, the fortune of King Janaka, in whose home supreme Lakṣmī shines after coming from Pramoda forest!
Passage 26
किं भाग्यं मिथिलापुरीगृहजुषां भावोद्धराणां नृणां येषां दृष्टिपथं प्रयाति सुषमा लोकोत्तरा तावकी। ब्रह्माद्यैरपि वा स्मृता क्षणमपि स्वाराज्यलक्ष्मीमदं दूरीकृत्य तनौ तनोति पुलकान् प्रेमाङ्कुरं चेतसि॥२६॥
What fortune belongs to the spiritually uplifted people who dwell in Mithilā's homes, whose path of sight receives your beauty beyond this world! When even Brahmā and the other gods remember it for a moment, it removes their pride in the splendor of their sovereignty, raises horripilation upon their bodies, and sends a shoot of prema into the heart.
Passage 27
अद्यापि त्वं प्रमुदविपिने क्रीडसि स्वैर्विलासैस्तेनैवाविर्भवसि वपुषा दृश्यसेऽत्रापि चैवम्। कुन्दारण्ये कलयसितरां चैव लीलां विशालां तेनैवासि श्रुतिषु गदिता व्यापिका ब्रह्मरूपा॥२७॥
Even now you sport through your own delights in Pramuda forest, and with that very body you manifest and are seen here as well. You enact vast līlā in the jasmine forest; therefore śruti proclaims you all-pervading and formed of Brahman.
Passage 28
अहो ईदृशी श्रीरिहाभूत्पूर्वं स्फुटं याजनि व्यक्तमेवावतारे। पुरे चापि देशे वने वीथिकासु प्रभाते यथा सूर्यरोचिःप्रसङ्गात्॥२८॥
Ah, never before had such splendor appeared here; it became plainly manifest in this descent—in city, countryside, forest, and streets—like the sun's brilliance at dawn.
Passage 29
तमो विनष्टं सकलं भवेऽस्मिन् प्रफुल्लतां मानसपङ्कजानि। सतामगुः सम्प्रति तदुदरुहां च शिरोऽवतंसान्यपतन् पृथिव्याम्॥२९॥
All darkness in this realm of becoming was destroyed, and the lotus hearts of the virtuous opened in bloom. At that moment flowers from the plants fell upon the earth like ornaments for its head.
Passage 30
आब्रह्मलोकं जगदेतदद्धा प्रसन्नतां यन्नितरां जगाम। तेनैव भावानि सुमङ्गलानि महानुभावैर्विदितानि लोके॥३०॥
The whole universe, extending to Brahmā's realm, truly attained the highest serenity. By that very sign, great souls recognized the supremely auspicious states appearing in the world.
Passage 31
जय जय जाह्नवीविमलकीर्तिकदम्बरी जय जय सज्जनावलिमनोज्ञशुभाचरिता। जय जय भावनामयसुमङ्गलादिव्यतनो जय जय जानकी त्वममिताद्भुतमाङ्गलिके॥३१॥
Victory, victory to you whose gathered fame is pure as the Gaṅgā! Victory to you whose auspicious conduct charms the host of virtuous people! Victory to your divine body, filled with devotion and supreme auspiciousness! Victory, Jānakī, infinite and wondrously auspicious one!
Passage 32
पाहि पाहि जगत्सर्वं रमय स्वामिकं निजम्। श्रीरामं चिद्घनानन्दं लीलां विस्तारयामुना॥३२॥
Protect, protect the entire world and delight your own Lord, Śrī Rāma, condensed consciousness and bliss. Expand your līlā with him.
Passage 33
यथा पूर्वं रमयसि प्रमोदविपिनान्तरे। तथाधुनापि रमय रामचन्द्रं रमापतिम्॥३३॥
Just as you delighted him formerly within Pramoda forest, so now delight Rāmacandra, Lord of Ramā.
Passage 34
प्रमोदविपिने यस्ते लीलापरिकरोऽखिलः। अधुनापि स एवात्र जायतां मनसो मुदे॥३४॥
May the entire retinue of your līlā in Pramoda forest appear here now as well, for the joy of the heart.
Passage 35
एवं स्तुत्वा निरृतिदेवतात्मा तस्या अग्रे न्यपतद्दण्डवत्सः। भूयो भूयस्तनुसञ्जातरोमा नत्वा नत्वा हृदि हर्षं चकार॥३५॥
Having praised her thus, Nirṛti in his form as presiding deity fell like a staff before her. Bowing again and again, the hair of his body standing on end, he filled his heart with joy.”
