Passage 1
महादेव उवाच— अहं हरिः पद्मभवस्तथान्ये देवा पदाङ्घ्रिद्वितयं प्रपन्नाः। भवन्ति लोके महतामपीशास्तां रामरामां प्रणतोऽस्मि नित्यम्॥१॥
Mahādeva said: “Hari, lotus-born Brahmā, I, and the other gods have taken refuge in her two feet and thereby become lords even of the great in this world. I bow eternally to her who is Rāma's beloved.
Passage 2
गुह्यं च ते नाम यदास्ति नित्यं गृह्णन्ति यद्वै सहजेति वेदाः। मातः स्फुटं तत्प्रतिपाद्यरूपां त्वां देवतां कामपि संश्रयामि॥२॥
Your eternal name is secret, yet the Vedas receive it as “Sahajā.” Mother, I take refuge in you, the ineffable deity whose form that name directly reveals.
Passage 3
वनं प्रमोदाख्यमनन्तकोटिश्रीजुष्टमानन्दमयं समन्तात्। त्वद्वल्लभो यत्र च रामचन्द्रो विभाति कन्दर्पवराध्यवेषः॥३॥
The forest called Pramoda is filled on every side with bliss and adorned by limitless millions of splendors. There your beloved Rāmacandra shines in a guise surpassing even the finest form of Love.
Passage 4
भक्त्या प्रयुक्तं तदहं श्रयामि भूत्वा कदाचित् खलु कोऽपि गोपः। चिरं यदानन्दसमुद्रमग्नो ब्रह्माक्षरं वेद न किञ्चिदेतत्॥४॥
Moved by devotion, I seek that forest. May I someday become some cowherd there and remain immersed in its ocean of bliss, knowing nothing at all of abstract Brahman or the imperishable.
Passage 5
तव स्वरूपं श्रुतिभिर्विमृग्यं ब्रह्मादिदेवैरपि नैव गम्यम्। अधिप्रमोदाटविकुञ्जवीथिष्वदो विसर्पत्यभितः पदाभ्याम्॥५॥
Your true form is sought by the śrutis and cannot be reached even by Brahmā and the other gods, yet it wanders everywhere on two feet along the bower paths of Pramoda forest.
Passage 6
शृङ्गारनामा रसराज उच्चैस्तवैव देहे कलितप्रतिष्ठः। यदंशमात्रेण जगत्समस्तं विमोहितं स्थावरजङ्गमाख्यम्॥६॥
The king of rasas called śṛṅgāra has his highest seat in your body. By merely a fraction of it, the entire world of moving and unmoving beings is enchanted.
Passage 7
लक्ष्मीः स्वयं या हरिसङ्गमेन प्रमोदयन्ती हृदयं विभाति। सा त्वत्कटाक्षामृतभूरिवर्षैः प्रभाविनीति ध्रुवमेव वेद्मि॥७॥
Lakṣmī herself shines by delighting Hari's heart in union; I know with certainty that her power comes from the abundant rain of nectar in your sidelong glance.
Passage 8
विना त्वदङ्घ्रिप्रभवप्रभावं कुतो भवेदृद्धिरिति प्रतीतम्। यतस्त्वदाराधनवञ्चितानां भवोदधौ दुःखपरम्परैव॥८॥
It is clear that no prosperity could arise without the power flowing from your feet, for those deprived of your worship know only an unbroken succession of suffering in the ocean of becoming.
Passage 9
दिने दिने यत्र तवोदयेच्छुः सखीसमूहो यतते त्वदीशम्। वशे विधातुं बहुभाववृत्यैः स ते विलासो हृदये ममास्ताम्॥९॥
Day after day your companions long for your rising and strive, through many currents of feeling, to bring your Lord beneath your sway. May that play of yours abide within my heart.
Passage 10
यथा पुमर्थाः पुरुषाय भोगान् यच्छन्ति चत्वार उदीर्णरूपाः। तथा स्वतन्त्रः खलु ते विलासः फलात्मकश्चैव फलार्पकश्च॥१०॥
Just as the four human aims in their developed forms grant enjoyments to a person, so your independent līlā is both the fruit itself and the giver of the fruit.
Passage 11
तवैव नित्यं वशवर्तिनी सा मायाभिधा शक्तिरनन्तरूपा। ययाखिलं मोहितमेतदुच्चैर्जगत्स्वरूपं परतन्त्रमेव॥११॥
The power called māyā, limitless in form, remains eternally subject to you. Through her, the entire dependent universe is profoundly deluded. Compassion, Revelation, and the Accessible Supreme
Passage 12
अचिन्त्यरूपा करुणा भवत्याः शक्ता समुद्धर्तुमुदेति जीवान्। नो चेत्कथं दुस्तरमोहजालं विभिद्य पारं परमं प्रयान्ति॥१२॥
Your inconceivably formed compassion arises with power to lift up living beings. Otherwise, how could they break through the impassable net of delusion and reach the supreme shore?
Passage 13
पितामहो यद्वितनोति विश्वं रक्षन् हरिर्द्रावयते च दैत्यान्। अहं तथा संहरणं करोमि तदेतदाभाति भवत्प्रसादः॥१३॥
That Grandfather Brahmā expands the universe, that Hari protects it and drives away the demons, and that I dissolve it—all this appears through your grace.
Passage 14
यतोऽभवद्वाङ्मनसं निवृत्तं यदप्यनावाप्यमिहास्ति किञ्चित्। यदेव सर्वैर्मुनिभिर्गृहीतं तदेव रूपं परमं भवत्याः॥१४॥
That from which speech and mind turn back, that which here cannot be attained, and that which all sages seek to grasp—that alone is your supreme form.
Passage 15
अनन्तशक्तिप्रभवप्रभावमनन्तसंख्याकपुमर्थमूलम्। अनन्तकालक्षपणाक्षयं ते विचेष्टितं मे हृदये चकास्तु॥१५॥
May your activity shine within my heart: born of limitless powers, the root of numberless human aims, spending endless ages yet itself undecaying.
Passage 16
तडिल्लतावच्च सुवर्णवर्णं रामाभ्रसम्पर्कसदामनोज्ञम्। ध्यातं न यैस्ते जननि स्वरूपं तेषां भवेऽस्मिन् जनुरेव मोघम्॥१६॥
Your golden form is like a lightning vine, forever beautiful in contact with the raincloud that is Rāma. Mother, the birth of those who do not meditate upon it is wasted in this world.
Passage 17
तावन्मुखे जाड्यमुदेति भूयस्तावद्धरिद्रो भवतीह लोकः। तावन्न कान्तिप्रसरोऽस्मिन् देहे यावन्न तेऽजायत दृष्टिपातः॥१७॥
Until your glance falls, dullness grows upon the face, a person remains poor in this world, and no radiance spreads through the body.
Passage 18
अधिप्रमोदाटविकुञ्जमध्ये श्रीरामयोगेन सदा स्फुरन्ती। इन्दीवरश्यामललोचनां त्वां सम्पत्तिसंवित्तिकृते भजामि॥१८॥
I worship you so that true awareness of divine wealth may arise: you shine eternally in union with Śrī Rāma amid the bowers of Pramoda forest, your eyes dark as blue lotuses.
Passage 19
यद्वाग्भवं नाम निरूढबीजं परात्मकं वेदसमूलमूलम्। तत्तद्वपुः सन्निहितं समस्ततन्त्रेषु मन्त्रात्मतया भजामि॥१९॥
I worship that form present as mantra throughout all the tantras: the supreme seed-name born of speech, firmly established as the very root of the Veda.
Passage 20
कदाचिदुन्मीलितमानभावोन्नते भ्रुवौ मन्मथचापचारू। श्रीरामचन्द्रैकरसीन्द्रभाव्ये भजामि ते मुक्तकृपाकटाक्षे॥२०॥
I worship your eyebrows, lovely as Love's bow, sometimes raised as the mood of loving pride unfolds; Śrī Rāmacandra, the unrivaled sovereign of rasa, contemplates them, and from them your free glance of grace descends.
Passage 21
वेदान्तवाक्येषु निगूढमुच्चैर्यत्तत्परं ब्रह्म चिदेकमात्रम्। तस्यापि चेत्थं परमाप्रतिष्ठां तदा कथं वाग्विषयत्वमेषि॥२१॥
The Supreme Brahman hidden deep within the sayings of Vedānta is pure consciousness alone; you are the ultimate foundation even of that. How, then, could you become an object of speech?
Passage 22
नित्ये महिम्नि प्रथितप्रतिष्ठा त्वमेव महागाथगुणैकजुष्टा। अगोचरा ब्रह्मशिवादिभिस्त्वमधिप्रमोदाटवि दृश्यसे वै॥२२॥
You alone are firmly established in eternal greatness and endowed with qualities worthy of mighty songs. Though beyond the reach of Brahmā, Śiva, and the other gods, you are plainly seen within Pramoda forest.
Passage 23
कदापि पञ्चत्वमियाद्विरञ्चिस्तथा विरामं भजते रमेशः। भजाम्यहं चैव विनाशभावं तदा त्वमीशः स्वयमेव चासि॥२३॥
At some time Brahmā will pass away, Viṣṇu will likewise come to rest, and I too will enter dissolution; then you alone remain, yourself the sovereign.
Passage 24
त्वदङ्घ्रिपद्मेरुहगर्भधूलीं त्रिवेदमल्लीसुमनोमधूलीम्। विचिन्वतां ज्ञानपथेष्वगम्यामधिप्रमोदाटवि किं न लप्स्ये॥२४॥
Those who search the paths of knowledge cannot reach the pollen hidden within the lotus of your foot, the honey sought by the jasmine flowers of the three Vedas. Yet what shall I not attain within Pramoda forest?
Passage 25
वेदान्तविज्ञानविनिश्चितार्थैर्योगेन कष्टेन गृहीतमन्यैः। तत्त्वत्स्वरूपं प्रमुदाटवीनामाभीरकन्याभिरहो सुखापम्॥२५॥
Others grasp your true form only with difficulty through yoga and meanings ascertained by Vedāntic knowledge; ah, the cowherd maidens of Pramoda forest attain it with ease.
Passage 26
यथाकथञ्चिद्विषयैर्विमुक्ता नृणां मनोवृत्तिरुदीर्णरूपा। त्वामप्रमेयामविलभ्य सीते कदर्थनीया किमु मुक्तिमार्गे॥२६॥
Even if a person's powerful mental current somehow becomes free of sense objects, what use is its torment upon the path of liberation if it fails to attain you, immeasurable Sītā?
Passage 27
ये स्वाश्रयां च प्रवदन्ति मुक्तिं तेषामहंभावविनष्टमात्रा। ब्रह्माभिरूपा खलु चित्तवृत्तिरत्यर्थमेव प्रविभाति मोघा॥२७॥
For those who declare liberation to rest in itself, the mental state resembling Brahman—merely the disappearance of the sense of “I”—appears utterly fruitless.
Passage 28
ये त्वत्पदाब्जं प्रभजन्ति सन्तस्तेषां परानुग्रहमात्रवश्या। स्वं ब्रह्मधर्मं प्रविहाय मातः करोषि साश्चर्यचरित्रचर्याम्॥२८॥
Mother, for saints who worship your lotus feet, you submit solely to supreme grace: setting aside your own majesty as Brahman, you perform a course of wondrous deeds.
Passage 29
रजांसि भूमेः प्रमिमातु कश्चित् तथा तरङ्गान् जलधौ विभर्तु। तथापि मातस्तव दिव्यकेलीगुणान् न संख्यातुमसौ समर्थः॥२९॥
Someone might measure the dust of the earth or count the waves held by the ocean, yet even that person could not enumerate the qualities of your divine play, Mother.
Passage 30
नमस्त्रिवेदीशिरसि स्थितायै ततोऽपि दौर्लभ्यतमान्वितायै। स्वभक्तिमात्रैकसुलभात्मने ते श्रीसच्चिदानन्दपदोन्नतायै॥३०॥
Homage to you who stand upon the head of the three Vedas yet remain exceedingly difficult to reach beyond them; your own being is easily attained through devotion alone, exalted in the glorious state of being, consciousness, and bliss. Manifestation in Janaka's Home
Passage 31
प्रमोदवनवीथीषु सहजानन्दिनी तु या। सा त्वं जनकभूपस्य गृहे मातः समागता॥३१॥
Mother, you who are Sahajānandinī upon the pathways of Pramoda forest have now come into King Janaka's home.
Passage 32
भक्तानुग्रहकारिण्याः को जानाति तव क्रियाम्। फलानुमेयमात्रत्वात्तथापि खलु गीयते॥३२॥
Who can know the deeds by which you bestow grace upon devotees? They can only be inferred from their fruits, yet even so they are sung.
Passage 33
इत्युच्चार्य शिवः स्तोत्रं सीतायाः परमश्रियः। सानन्दाश्रुमिलन्नेत्रं दण्डवन्न्यपतद्भुवि॥३३॥
Having recited this hymn to Sītā, the supreme Śrī, Śiva's eyes filled with tears of joy and he fell prostrate upon the earth.”
