Chapter context and opening material

Source: Volume 3, physical PDF pages 69–73 (printed pages 55–59). Structure: 51 continuously numbered Sanskrit verses. Summary: Nārāyaṇa praises Sahajā as the divine power through whose worship Brahmā creates, Viṣṇu sustains, and Śiva withdraws the cosmos. He identifies her with the ground of language, cognition, māyā, Brahman, the guṇas and their transcendence, and the eternal play that gives creation its purpose. A long contemplative sequence celebrates her form from her lotus feet to her radiant face; the hymn then turns to Pramoda forest, her rasa-filled līlās, Rāma, and the families who nurture the eternal pair. Having repeatedly praised and bowed to her, Viṣṇu returns fulfilled to his own abode. Sahajā as the Ground of Cosmos and Līlā

Passage 1

Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: “I bow eternally, O sovereign Goddess of the Lord of the universe, to the twin blossoms continuously produced by your feet. Long tasting their rasa, even I become forever renewed in divine activity.

Passage 2

Brahmā is capable of primary and secondary creation, I am lord of its preservation, and Hara is skilled in its dissolution; all this, O Goddess, is the fruit of worshiping you.

Passage 3

Then and there, the magnanimous Lord Nārāyaṇa praised supreme Goddess Śrī Sahajā, the source of his own power.

Passage 4

You shine eternally as reality to those who trace the current of your deeds along the Vedic paths, while in your boundless mind you unfold a course that forever delights the contemplation of Brahmā, Śiva, and the other gods.

Passage 5

Though your form is inconceivable, beyond the guṇas, and indescribable even to the lords of speech, your delightful qualities invite contemplation; ah, your devotees sing you without end.

Passage 6

O purifier of the universe, your world-praised names and forms cannot be counted. By merely knowing them, a person attains a radiant good far surpassing all that the three worldly aims can yield.

Passage 7

You alone are the beginning, you abide in the middle, and you alone are the end, O wisdom of the lord of the gods. From you this entire universe arises, in you it stands, and into you, who are Brahman, it wholly dissolves.

Passage 8

You alone, O sovereign of the world, shine as the all-pervading one. You are the “I” reached by the highest understanding; you are the awareness that delimits both word and meaning in the concepts of “you” and “I.”

Passage 9

Every name belonging to every existing thing is yours, O you whose form is every object. The wise conceive nothing apart from you, whether through word, meaning, or a form fashioned in thought.

Passage 10

O sovereign of the universe, you are worshiped through action, knowledge, and perfectly pure devotion. Whoever hates you, whose form is all, is rejected by all and is truly cut off from immortality.

Passage 11

Thus you stand within every path and bring forth hosts of blessings in existence, just as the sun alone, present in all luminous things, shines through their light.

Passage 12

Those who call you merely māyā, primal matter, prakṛti, the unmanifest, time, or any such category, O sovereign of the universe, are unwise; they know nothing here of you as you truly are.

Passage 13

Nor do those who simply call you qualityless Brahman know you directly in truth, for you are the foundation even of that supreme pure consciousness, the possessor of the nature of being, consciousness, and bliss.

Passage 14

Everything coheres directly in you: both the guṇas and the state beyond them arise through your power. You are one reality within and without, like a solid, shining block of salt.

Passage 15

You alone are the bearer of every expanding property, yet in you there is no real division between property and possessor. Even if such a distinction be admitted, in you, the self of all, the category of difference never divides the supreme reality.

Passage 16

In a reality such as you, whose nature is being and consciousness, even the presence of apparent opposites causes no contradiction. Heat exists in fire and coolness in water, yet both are seen gathered together in you.

Passage 17

Sound, letter, word, nominal and verbal ending, sentence, great Vedic saying, and the whole revealed canon are all you; through expansion and contraction, you alone are unfolded everywhere as the universe.

Passage 18

This beginningless cosmic tree has risen from a root that can nowhere be found. By knowing you, however, that root becomes certain even where the wise remain forever in doubt.

Passage 19

At times you accomplish everything directly yourself, and at times through the agency of the Supreme Person. At times, O Goddess, you act otherwise by your own will, and at times the Self alone appears as all.

Passage 20

At times, Mother, having spread everything from yourself, you enter within it. Thus you delight in the world you have fashioned, for the whole of it exists for divine play.

Passage 21

Time, lord of hosts of millions of moments, grows as the embodiment of your activity. It licks away the qualities of every object, yet you, as the power of consciousness, consume even time.

Passage 22

Then, in your own form, you extend the current of your deeds throughout Pramoda forest. O reality beyond the supreme, you sport through supremely exalted and generous qualities that transcend the universe.

Passage 23

Your compassionate nature expands among your devotees, whose life rests in you alone. Otherwise, renouncing both worldly existence and isolated liberation, what else could they ever contemplate?

Passage 24

Time cannot touch your play, for it is beyond the supreme and consists solely of being, consciousness, and bliss. Therefore your people, possessors of every treasure, place their feet upon time's head and sport freely. Contemplation of Sahajā's Divine Form
