Chapter context and opening material

Vanaghoṣā recounts her former birth as Śrīkalā, daughter of the sage Śāṇḍilya. She performs severe austerities to obtain Rāma as her husband, declining every divine and worldly boon. Śāṇḍilya reminds her that Sahajā-Sītā alone is Rāma's wife. Rāma then appears, praises Śrīkalā's beauty and steadfast devotion, and promises that she will descend with him as Sahajā's beloved companion. She later becomes the daughter of the northern mountain and manifests in Janaka's household as Vanaghoṣā. Śrīkalā's Austerity and Her Father's Questions
