ब्रह्मोवाच— [राज्यावासिदिने देवो द्विचत्वारिशवार्षिकः। देवी विदेहतनया त्रयस्त्रिंशतिवार्षिकी॥१॥
Brahmā said: “[On the day he took up residence in the kingdom, the Lord was forty-two years old, and the goddess, daughter of Videha, was thirty-three.

अथास्यास्तद्दिनादासीन्मासि भाद्रपदे तिथौ। नवम्यां जानकीदेव्या गर्भः कुलविवर्धनः॥२॥
“From that day, on the ninth lunar date in the month of Bhādrapada, Goddess Jānakī bore a pregnancy that would extend the lineage.

अतीते सप्तमे मासि चैत्रे द्वादशिकादिने। आदेशतो रघुपतेर्जानकीं लक्ष्मणो रथम्॥३॥
“When seven months had passed, on the twelfth lunar date in Caitra, Lakṣmaṇa, at Raghupati's command, placed Jānakī upon a chariot—

आरोप्य राजभवनाद्वाल्मीकीयतपोवने। नीत्वा सत्वरमत्याक्षीत्सा रुरोद भृशं....॥४॥
“—and quickly took her from the royal palace to Vālmīki's ascetic forest and left her there. She wept bitterly....

दर्शित्वा मुनिशार्दूलं समाधाय चिरं वने। निनाय स्वाश्रमं सार्धं तापसगणैः....॥५॥
“The tiger among sages saw her, consoled her at length in the forest, and brought her to his hermitage together with the ascetics....
Passage 6
आवात्सीत् तु सुचिरं तत्र पुण्यचारित्रशालिनी। कालेनासूत तनयौ विशुद्धौ समतेजसौ॥६॥
“The woman of sacred conduct dwelt there for a long time and in due course gave birth to two pure sons equal in splendor.
Passage 7
जन्मसंस्कारमकरोत्तयोरतुलतेजसोः। वाल्मीकिर्मुनिशार्दूल आद्यं कविपदं दधत्॥७॥
“Vālmīki, tiger among sages and bearer of the station of the first poet, performed the birth rites for those two of incomparable radiance.
Passage 8
तावपश्यल्लवणहा वाल्मीकेराश्रमं गतः। नाचख्यौ रघुनाथस्य वाल्मीकेरेव शासनात्॥८॥
“The slayer of Lavaṇa saw them when he visited Vālmīki's hermitage, but at Vālmīki's own instruction he did not tell Raghunātha.
Passage 9
सुवर्णतनुमाधाय सीतामेव स्ववामतः। रघुनाथः समकरोदश्वमेधान् महामखान्॥९॥
“Installing at his left a golden figure representing Sītā herself, Raghunātha performed the great Aśvamedha sacrifices.

शतानि नव वर्षाणि षट् च माससुतानि सा। वाल्मीकेराश्रमेऽवात्सीत्सपुत्रा तापसीयुता॥१०॥
“She lived at Vālmīki's hermitage with her sons and the female ascetics for nine hundred years and six months.

समर्प्य तनयौ भर्त्रे सीता नित्याङ्गसंगिनी। पश्यतामेव लोकानां प्रविष्टा धरणीतलम्॥११॥
“Sītā, eternally united with her husband's very being, entrusted her sons to him and entered the earth before the eyes of the people.
Passage 12
भूमौ विनिर्गतायां तु तस्यामात्मसमाकृतौ। वर्षाणामयुतं रामो बुभुजे भुवमेव सः॥१२॥
“After she, identical with his own self, had entered the earth, Rāma ruled the earth for ten thousand years.
Passage 13
आदावन्ते तथा मध्ये न चास्य विरहं प्रभोः। अन्यैव तस्य सा लीला लोकोत्तरमुपैधिता॥१३॥
“At the beginning, end, or middle there was in truth no separation from the Lord. This was another of his līlās, established beyond the ways of the world.

ततः स्वतनयौ रामो राज्ये संस्थाप्य बन्धुभिः। सहितः स्वप्रकृतिभिः पौरैश्च पुरुषोत्तमः॥१४॥
“Thereafter Rāma installed his own two sons in the kingdom. The Supreme Person, accompanied by his brothers, his own associates, and the citizens—

लीलामानवमुत्सृज्य पुनर्नित्ये समाविशत्। अन्तः प्रमोदविपिने सीतया सहितः स्वराट्॥१५॥

“Rāma eternally delights in Pramodā with his companions and with the divine powers Sahajānandā, Māṅgalyā, and Sukhitā.
Passage 17
नित्या गोपाश्च गोप्यश्च नित्या गावः खगा मृगाः। लीला रासविलासाद्या बाल्यकैशोरयोः क्रमात्॥१७॥
“The cowherds and cowherd maidens are eternal, as are the cows, birds, and deer. His pastimes—rāsa delights and others—unfold in the successive moods of childhood and youth.
Passage 18
यत्र दिव्या च सरयूः केलिकल्लोलमालिनी। वनान्युपवनान्युच्चैर्गुञ्जन्मधुकराणि च॥१८॥
“There flows the divine Sarayū, garlanded with playful waves; forests and groves resound with loudly humming bees.

कुञ्जानि च निकुञ्जानि यत्र नित्यानि सर्वदा। सर्वशक्तिमयी तत्र सहजानन्दिनीं प्रियाम्॥१९॥
“There the bowers and secluded groves are forever eternal. Taking with him his beloved Sahajānandinī, embodiment of every divine power—

आदाय चिन्मयानन्दस्वरूपः सर्वशक्तिभृत्। रमते स्वात्मरमणो रामो रासादिकेलिभिः॥२०॥
“—Rāma, whose nature is conscious bliss, bearer of every power and delighting in his own true self, enjoys rāsa and the other pastimes.
Passage 21
रत्नाद्रेः परितो निकुञ्जभवने भूयोऽपि रामस्ततः कृत्वा स्वेच्छतरं मुहुर्विहरणं कर्माणि दिव्यानि सः। यान्युद्गीय जनो विधूतकलुषः स्वं रूपमासादयेद् भूयो नैव च कल्पते भवभयप्राप्त्यै विमुक्तश्चिरम्॥२१॥
“Again and again Rāma freely wanders through the secluded bowers around the jeweled mountain and performs divine deeds. Singing of them, a person becomes cleansed of impurity, attains his own true form, remains liberated forever, and is never again subject to the fear of worldly becoming.

इत्येतत्प्रमुदाटवीविहरणस्वच्छन्दसौख्यात्मनो रामस्यामितसद्गुणौघजलधेर्जन्मामलं कर्म च। भक्त्या संश्रुणुते स मानववरो जीवन् विमुक्तश्चरेत् स्वानन्दामृतलाभपुष्टहृदयो भूयो भवे नोद्भवेत्॥२२॥
