Trijaṭā's Boon and Bharata's Reunion with Rāma

Rāma revives the fallen monkeys and prepares to return to Ayodhyā. Sītā asks him to reward Trijaṭā for protecting her in Laṅkā, but Trijaṭā rejects worldly pleasure, heaven, and liberation, asking only for unwavering devotion and loving service. Rāma grants her prayer. He then departs in the Puṣpaka, visits Bharadvāja's hermitage, and is reunited with Bharata on the sixth day. Sītā Commends Trijaṭā

Passage 1

ब्रह्मोवाच— अथ रामो रमायुक्तो हनुमत्प्रमुखैर्वृतः। शुशुभे चन्द्रिकापूर्णः शशीवोडुगणैर्युतः॥१॥

Brahmā said: “Rāma, joined by Ramā and surrounded by Hanumān and the other leaders, shone like the moon full of moonlight amid the host of stars.

Passage 2

दृष्ट्या चामृतवर्षिण्या जीवयामास तान् कपीन्। ये ये मृता महाघोरै राक्षसैः सह संगरे॥२॥

“With his nectar-raining glance, he restored to life every monkey who had died in the battle with the terrible rākṣasas.

ते पुनो राममालोक्य सीतया संगतं तदा। ववन्दिरे मुदा युक्ता निद्रां हित्वोत्थिता इव॥३॥

“Seeing Rāma reunited with Sītā, they joyfully bowed to him, as though they had merely awakened from sleep.

अथो विसर्जयामास नानादेशागतांश्च तान्। कपीनमरसंकाशान् रक्षःपतिजयोजितान्॥४॥

“He then dismissed those godlike monkeys who had come from many lands and had helped win victory over the lord of the rākṣasas.

हनुमांश्चैव सुग्रीवो नलनीलाङ्गदादयः। एतैः कपिवरैः सार्धं सीतालक्ष्मणसंयुतः॥५॥

“Hanumān, Sugrīva, Nala, Nīla, Aṅgada, and the other foremost monkeys remained with him; Rāma stood together with them, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa.

अयोध्यां स प्रतिष्ठासुर्देव्या स इदमीरितः। एषा मे त्रिजटा नाम राक्षसी हितकारिणी॥६॥

“As he prepared to depart for Ayodhyā, the goddess said to him, ‘This rākṣasī named Trijaṭā has been my benefactor.

दशग्रीवस्य विपिने वसन्तीं मां सुदुःखिताम्। त्वद्विश्लेषभरां नाथ नितान्तकृशविग्रहाम्॥७॥

“‘Lord, while I dwelt in Daśagrīva's grove, deeply afflicted, burdened by separation from you, and exceedingly emaciated—

साधु पर्यचरद्यत्र राक्षस्यो विकटाननाः। नानामायाविनश्चैव राक्षसाः पर्यखेदयन्॥८॥

“‘—she cared for me well, even as hideous-faced rākṣasīs and rākṣasas skilled in manifold illusions tormented me.

Passage 9

कापि मां हलसंकाशै रदनैः पर्यभीषयत्। कापि मां कटुभिर्वाक्यैरतुदत् कण्टकैरिव॥९॥

“‘One terrified me with teeth resembling plowshares; another pierced me with bitter words as though with thorns.

Passage 10

काचिद्भ्रुकुटिघोरास्या दृग्भ्यां रोषारुणानना। अभीषयत्तरां घोरा राक्षसी दुष्टमानसा॥१०॥

“‘Another dreadful, wicked-minded rākṣasī, her brow and face fearsome and her eyes red with rage, terrified me still more.

कापि तस्यातिदुष्टस्य नियुक्ता भृशमाज्ञया। लोभयन्ती मनो वाक्यैर्नितरामुदवेजयत्॥११॥

“‘Another, forcefully commissioned by that utterly wicked one, tried to entice my mind with her words and caused me intense distress.

Passage 12

एवं ते राक्षसा घोरास्तुतुदुर्नितरां मनः। राक्षस्या माययानर्थं दर्शयन्तो भयावहम्॥१२॥

“‘Thus those terrible rākṣasas continually wounded my heart, displaying dreadful calamities through demonic illusion.

एकदा तु भयात्प्राणांस्तितिक्षन्तीं जवेन माम्। इयां तां राक्षसीं मायां बोधयामास बन्धुवत्॥१३॥

“‘Once, when terror made me ready to give up my life at once, she revealed that demonic illusion to me like a true kinswoman.

ततोऽहं जीविता नाथ सख्या त्रिजटयानया। अतः प्रत्युपकारोऽस्यास्त्वरितं प्रविधीयताम्॥१४॥

“‘Lord, I therefore survived through this friend Trijaṭā. Please repay her kindness without delay.’ Trijaṭā Asks Only for Loving Service

इति श्रुत्वा तु सा वाक्यं जानक्या जातिराक्षसी। उवाच त्रिजटा नाम रामं रघुकुलेश्वरम्॥१५॥

“Hearing Jānakī's words, the rākṣasī by birth named Trijaṭā addressed Rāma, Lord of Raghu's lineage.

Passage 16

नाहं वाञ्छामि सततं ब्राह्मं पदमपि स्फुटम्। नैहिकं भोगमत्यल्पमपवर्गमपि प्रभो॥१६॥

“‘Lord, I do not desire even Brahmā's manifest and enduring station, nor the paltry enjoyments of this world, nor even liberation.

Passage 17

त्वत्स्वरूपैकनिष्ठां तु वाञ्छामि रघुपुङ्गव। त्वयि च प्रेमदास्यं तद्यत्रानन्दोऽतिगह्वरः॥१७॥

“‘Foremost Raghu, I desire single-minded constancy in your true form and that loving service to you in which joy is immeasurably deep.

Passage 18

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाश्च सर्वेऽपि लघुवत्ततः। अतस्तां देहि राजेन्द्र भक्तिं ते वीतकल्मषाम्॥१८॥

“‘Beside it, dharma, wealth, pleasure, and liberation all appear trifling. Therefore, king of kings, grant me that stainless devotion to you.’

Passage 19

तयैवं प्रार्थितो रामः प्रियया सह तत्क्षणे। दृष्ट्या स्वानन्दवर्षिण्या कृतार्थीकुरुते स्म ताम्॥१९॥

अथ पुष्पकमास्थाय विमानवरमीश्वरः। चतुर्थीदिवसे सीतालक्ष्मणाभ्यां समन्वितः॥२०॥

“Then, on the fourth day, the Lord boarded the excellent aerial car Puṣpaka together with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa.

अग्रेसरैः कपिवरैरुदीर्णजयमङ्गलः। विभीषणेन भक्तेन सानुरागेण संयुतः॥२१॥

“The foremost monkeys went before him amid swelling cries of victory and blessing, while the loving devotee Vibhīṣaṇa accompanied him.

ऋक्षेश्वरेण बलिना वृद्धेन च समन्वितः। अयोध्यां व्योममार्गेण प्रतस्थौ रघुपुङ्गवः॥२२॥

“Accompanied also by the mighty and aged lord of the bears, the foremost Raghu set out for Ayodhyā through the sky.

चतुर्दश समा वासं वने कृत्वा गुरोर्गिरा। निस्तीर्य विपदं कृत्स्नां लोकानुकृतिलीलया॥२३॥

“At his elder's command he had dwelt fourteen years in the forest and crossed every adversity through his līlā of conforming to the ways of the world.

दण्डकारण्यमत्येत्य प्रियायै दर्शयन् शुभाः। नित्यलीलास्थलीस्तास्ताः पुष्पकाग्रमधिश्रितः॥२४॥

“Riding at the front of Puṣpaka, he passed over Daṇḍaka Forest and showed his beloved those auspicious places of his eternal līlā.

क्वचिज्जलदराजीषु मिलन्मरकतद्युतिः। दामिन्या प्रियया युक्तो द्वितीय इव वारिदः॥२५॥

“At times, among ranks of clouds, his emerald luster merged with theirs; joined by his beloved like lightning, he appeared as a second rain cloud.

Passage 26

महायशा महातेजा महादातृशिरोमणिः। कपिसैन्यैः समायुक्तो जयद्विगुणमानसैः॥२६॥

“The greatly renowned, greatly radiant crown jewel of generous givers was accompanied by monkey armies whose spirits had doubled through victory.

स्तूयमानः सुरगणैर्गीयमानश्च किन्नरैः। आकाशगङ्गालहरीमरुल्लहरिवीजितः॥२७॥

“Hosts of gods praised him, kinnaras sang of him, and waves of wind from the celestial Gaṅgā fanned him.

Passage 28

क्वचित्तडिल्लतासूत्रैर्विमानान्तःप्रसृत्वरैः। क्षणे क्षणे व्योमपथि चमत्कृतविलोचनः॥२८॥

“At every moment on the skyward road, his eyes marveled at spreading strands of lightning-vines reaching within the aerial car.

विमानस्थैः सुरवरैर्नभोविपुलवीथिषु। वन्द्यमानः प्रतिपदं जयघोषपुरःसरम्॥२९॥

“Along the broad avenues of the sky, the foremost gods in their aerial cars bowed to him at every step, preceded by cries of victory. Bharadvāja Blesses Rāma and Bharata Arrives

महान्तं नभसो मार्गमतिक्रम्य महायशाः। भरद्वाजाश्रमं प्राप पञ्चम्यां रघुपुङ्गवः॥३०॥

“After crossing the great expanse of the sky, the renowned foremost Raghu reached Bharadvāja's hermitage on the fifth day.

विमानाग्रात्समुत्तीर्य कपिभिर्जयशब्दितः। ददर्श मुनिशार्दूलं सीतासौमित्रिसंयुतः॥३१॥

“Descending from the aerial car as the monkeys cried victory, he beheld the tiger among sages together with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa.

नमस्कृत्य स्थितो वीरो बभाषे मुनिना ततः। चिरं वर्षस्व वीरेन्द्र निरस्ताखिलकण्टक॥३२॥

“The hero bowed and stood before him. The sage then said, ‘Great hero, rule for a long time, having removed every thorn.

Passage 33

श्रुतिगोद्विजधर्माणां पालनेऽतिविचक्षण। आनन्दय निजान् नित्यं काकुत्स्थकुलभूषण॥३३॥

“‘Adornment of Kakutstha's lineage, supremely skilled in protecting the Veda, cows, brāhmaṇas, and dharma, forever bring joy to your own people.’

इत्याद्याशीर्गिरा तेन तोषितो रघुनन्दनः। आतिथ्यविधिना भूयः सत्कृतः सपरिच्छदः॥३४॥

“The son of Raghu was delighted by these and other words of blessing, and the sage further honored him and his entire retinue with due hospitality.

Passage 35

अथ तं भरतः श्रुत्वा भरद्वाजाश्रमागतम्। संयोज्य महतीं सेनामाययौ दर्शनोत्सुकः॥३५॥

“Then Bharata heard that he had reached Bharadvāja's hermitage. Eager to see him, Bharata assembled a great host and came.

Passage 36

नन्दिग्रामस्थितो गोपः सुखितेन्द्रस्तमागतम्। उपश्रुत्य सगोपौघः परमानन्दवानभूत्॥३६॥

“The guardian dwelling at Nandigrāma, his senses now gladdened, heard that Rāma had arrived; together with the host of protectors, he became supremely joyful.

षष्ठीदिने स भरतेन जटाकलाप- वल्काजिनाम्बरधरेण तपःकृशेन। भस्माङ्गरागधवलेन सुसंगतोऽभूत् तं सस्वजे च मुदितो गुरुवन्दनान्ते॥३७॥

“On the sixth day he was reunited with Bharata, who wore matted locks, bark, and deerskin, whose body had grown lean through austerity, and whose limbs were whitened with sacred ash.
