Rāvaṇa returns to battle with a vast rākṣasa army and inflicts heavy losses upon the monkeys. Rāma destroys the rākṣasa commanders over successive days, but Rāvaṇa strikes Lakṣmaṇa down with a divine spear. At Rāma's command, Hanumān uproots Mount Droṇa and brings its healing herb, restoring Lakṣmaṇa. After the fighting pauses on the tenth day, the monkeys enter Laṅkā by night, set it ablaze, and renew their assault. Rāvaṇa Returns to Battle

Passage 1

ब्रह्मोवाच— अथ चैत्रस्य कृष्णायां पञ्चदश्यां दशाननः। युद्धाय राक्षसैः सार्धं प्राप्तो रोषसमन्वितः॥१॥

Brahmā said: “Then, on the fifteenth day of Caitra's dark fortnight, the ten-headed Rāvaṇa came to battle with the rākṣasas, filled with fury.

Passage 2

कोटिशो राक्षसास्तस्य पुरोगाः पृष्ठगास्तथा। गृहीतनानाशस्त्रास्त्रा मृत्यवे हुतजीविताः॥२॥

“Tens of millions of rākṣasas marched before and behind him. Bearing many weapons and missiles, they had offered up their lives to death.

Passage 3

तेषां समरसंरम्भं वीक्ष्य रामस्य सैनिकाः। कोटिशः कपयो वीराः संयुक्ताः सहसा युधे॥३॥

“Seeing their battle fury, tens of millions of heroic monkeys in Rāma's army immediately joined the fight.

तेषामन्योन्यमभवत्सुमहद्युद्धताण्डवम्। शिलावृक्षप्रहरणैः करदन्तनखायुधैः॥४॥

“A tremendous dance of mutual combat arose between them, fought with stones and trees as missiles and with hands, teeth, and claws as weapons.

Passage 5

बलिनो बलिभिः साकं संयुताः संप्रहारिणः। वानराः शौर्यसम्पूर्णाश्चक्रिरे घोरमाहवम्॥५॥

“The strong met the strong and exchanged blows. Filled with valor, the monkeys waged a terrible battle.

Passage 6

अथ रावण आधूय तडिद्दीप्ताः कृपाणिकाः। कुपितो निजघानाजौ वानरान् सोऽतिनिर्दयः॥६॥

“Then Rāvaṇa brandished lightning-bright swords. Enraged and utterly merciless, he struck down monkeys in the battle.

यूथशो वानरान् खड्गैर्वज्रनिष्पातभीषणैः। द्विधाकृत्य तनुं युद्धे जघान दशकन्धरः॥७॥

“With swords as dreadful as falling thunderbolts, the ten-necked king cut whole companies of monkeys in two and killed them in the fight.

हतास्तेन रुषान्धेन कपिभिस्तैः सहस्रशः। नितान्तपीनतनुभिर्भूमिरास्तस्तरेतराम्॥८॥

“Blinded by rage, he killed those monkeys by the thousand. Their immensely powerful bodies covered the earth completely. Rāma Destroys the Rākṣasa Commanders

कपीनां कदनं वीक्ष्य चुक्रोध रघुपुङ्गवः। चैत्रशुक्लाद्यदिवसादारभ्य पञ्चभिर्दिनैः॥९॥

“Seeing the slaughter of the monkeys, the foremost Raghu became furious. Beginning with the first day of Caitra's bright fortnight and continuing for five days—

आस्फाल्य धनुरुद्दीप्तबाणपूगैः सहस्रशः। क्षयं निनाय निखिलान् रक्षोयूथपतीन् रणे॥१०॥

“—he resounded his bow and, with thousands of blazing flights of arrows, destroyed every commander of the rākṣasa hosts in battle.

उद्धताः कृतसंरम्भाः प्राप्य रामं निशाचराः। पतङ्गा इव दीपार्चिः क्षयं याता मदाविलाः॥११॥

“The arrogant night-roamers, intoxicated with pride and rushing fiercely upon Rāma, met destruction like moths entering a lamp's flame.

तैरद्रिकूटसङ्काशैः पतितैर्बाणताडितैः। उच्चावचाभवद्भूमिरगम्या सकलैरपि॥१२॥

“Struck by arrows, they fell like mountain peaks. The earth became so uneven and impassable with their bodies that no one could cross it.

Passage 13

आस्तृता परितो घोरं युद्धं कृत्वा प्रदारुणैः। निर्वाणैः कौणपवरैर्भीमा संग्राममेदिनी॥१३॥

“After their exceedingly dreadful battle, the fearsome field was covered on every side with the lifeless bodies of the foremost rākṣasas.

Passage 14

शोणितौघवहास्वन्तर्नदीषु गिरिकूलवत्। पतिता रक्षसां कायाः स्यन्दमानाः समन्ततः॥१४॥

“Bodies of rākṣasas lay and drifted everywhere like mountain banks within rivers carrying torrents of blood.

रामबाणाभिदीर्णानां राक्षसानां द्विधा वपुः। चलितं रोषवेगेन चेष्टते स्म भुजङ्गवत्॥१५॥

“The bodies of rākṣasas split in two by Rāma's arrows still moved under the force of their fury, writhing like serpents.

Passage 16

रक्षोधिपेषु सर्वेषु क्षयं नीतेषु संयुगे। महापार्श्वादयो वीरा युध्यन्ते स्म सुविक्रमैः॥१६॥

“When all the rākṣasa chiefs had been destroyed in battle, the hero Mahāpārśva and the others continued fighting with mighty prowess.

तेऽपि षष्ठीं समारभ्य यावत्स्यादष्टमीदिनम्। युद्धं कृत्वा महत्संख्ये घातिताः शेरते भुवि॥१७॥

“They too fought in the immense engagement from the sixth day through the eighth, until they were killed and lay upon the earth. Lakṣmaṇa Falls and Hanumān Seeks the Healing Herb

Passage 18

अथ रावणनिर्मुक्तशक्त्या वज्रनिपातया। लक्ष्मणो हृदि निर्भिन्नः पपात सहसा भुवि॥१८॥

“Then a spear released by Rāvaṇa fell like a thunderbolt, pierced Lakṣmaṇa's heart, and caused him suddenly to collapse upon the ground.

ततो हाहाकृतमभूद्रामसैन्यं विषादतः। राघवेन्द्रोऽपि भगवान् नरलीलानुकारकः॥१९॥

“Rāma's army cried out in anguish and despair. Even the divine Lord of the Raghus, enacting human pastimes—

मुमोचाश्रूणि नेत्राभ्यां विषण्णहृदयो भृशम्। लक्ष्मणं शक्तिनिर्भिन्नं वीक्ष्य चिन्तासमन्वितः॥२०॥

“—shed tears from his eyes. Seeing Lakṣmaṇa pierced by the spear, his heart was deeply afflicted and filled with concern.

Passage 21

अथोवाच हनूमन्तं त्वरितं गच्छ मारुते। अस्ति द्रोणाचले दिव्या विशल्यकरणौषधिः॥२१॥

“He then said to Hanumān, ‘Son of the Wind, go quickly. Upon Mount Droṇa there is a divine herb that draws out embedded weapons.

तामानय बलात्सद्यो यस्याः स्पर्शनमात्रतः। विशल्यः स्यान्मम भ्राता मूर्छितः पतितो भुवि॥२२॥

“‘Bring it here at once by your strength. At its mere touch my brother, who lies unconscious upon the earth, will be freed from the spear.’

Passage 23

इत्यादिष्टो मरुत्सूनुर्जगाम द्रोणपर्वतम्। तावन्नवम्यां रामेण संताड्य निशितैः शरैः॥२३॥

“Thus commanded, the Son of the Wind went to Mount Droṇa. Meanwhile, on the ninth day, Rāma struck Rāvaṇa with sharp arrows—

रोषाद्विद्रावितो युद्धात्प्राणानादाय रावणः। जगाम लङ्कानगरीं महामानी ज्वलन् रुषा॥२४॥

“—and drove him furiously from the battle. Escaping with his life, the intensely proud Rāvaṇa returned to Laṅkā, burning with rage. Mount Droṇa Restores Lakṣmaṇa

अथ प्राप मरुत्सूनुर्दिव्यं द्रोणमहीधरम्। तत्रापश्यद्दीप्यमानाः सर्वा एव महौषधीः॥२५॥

“The Son of the Wind then reached the divine mountain Droṇa and saw all its great healing herbs shining there.

Passage 26

ततो बलात्समुत्पाट्य द्रोणाद्रिं व्योमवर्त्मना। आजगाम त्वरायुक्तो यत्र रामो विषण्णधीः॥२६॥

“He forcefully uprooted Mount Droṇa and hurried through the path of the sky to where the grieving Rāma waited.

Passage 27

समागतं हनूमन्तमालोक्य रघुपुङ्गवः। प्रससाद भृशं तस्मिन्नसंख्यातोपकारिणि॥२७॥

“Seeing Hanumān arrive, the foremost Raghu was immensely pleased with that benefactor whose services were beyond counting.

Passage 28

द्रोणाद्रेः सहसादाय विशल्यकरणौषधिम्। स्पर्शयामास सौमित्रे विशल्यः सोऽभवत्तथा॥२८॥

“He immediately took the weapon-removing herb from Mount Droṇa and touched it to Saumitri. Lakṣmaṇa was at once freed from the spear.

उत्तस्थौ तत्क्षणादेव सुहृदां हर्षमावहन्। युद्धावहारः समभूद्दशमीदिवसे तदा॥२९॥

“He rose that very instant, bringing joy to his friends. A suspension of battle then took place on the tenth day. The Monkeys Burn Laṅkā by Night

अथ रात्रौ कपिभटाः कृतास्फोटाः सगर्जनाः। प्रविश्य लङ्कानगरीं ज्वालयामासुरुत्कटाः॥३०॥

“That night the fierce monkey warriors, striking their arms and roaring, entered the city of Laṅkā and set it ablaze.

Passage 31

तत्राभवद्युद्धमतीव तेषां शाखामृगाणां बलिभिः सपत्नैः। अवीवधन् दन्तनखप्रहारैः शिलाद्रुमाद्यैश्च रिपून् हरीन्द्राः॥३१॥

“A tremendous battle arose there between those forest-dwellers and their powerful enemies.
