Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— तामायान्तीं तडित्कान्तिं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम्। परितः संदिदिहिरे कपिसैन्यानि चेतसि॥१॥
Brahmā said: “As she approached, lightning-bright and with a face like the full moon, the monkey armies all around wondered about her in their hearts.
Passage 2
नूनं किमेषा जनकेन्द्रपुत्री मुक्ता दशास्येन हिमांशुवक्त्रा। अशोकवाटीं सहसा विहाय पर्येति शीघ्रं रमणं रमेव॥२॥
“‘Can this be Janaka's moon-faced daughter, released by the ten-headed king, who has suddenly left the Aśoka grove and hastens toward her beloved like Ramā toward her Lord?’
Passage 3
विहाय नाकं त्रिदशाङ्गना वा काचित्प्रभुं राघवसार्वभौमम्। द्रष्टुं समेतीयमखण्डलक्ष्मीस्तनुप्रकाशैः परितः स्फुरन्ती॥३॥
“‘Or is she some celestial woman who has left heaven to behold Lord Rāghava, sovereign of all? She approaches like undivided splendor, shining all around with the radiance of her body.
Passage 4
साक्षादयं भानुकुलेऽवतीर्णो रामः परः पूरुष एक आद्यः। तमीक्षितुं वा कमला समुद्रादियं समागच्छति कान्तियुक्ता॥४॥
“‘Rāma is directly the one primordial supreme Person descended in the solar dynasty. Perhaps this radiant woman is Kamalā herself, coming from the ocean to behold him.
Passage 5
तारापथाद्वा समुपैति तारा पूर्णेन्दुबिम्बादपि चन्द्रिका वा। प्रभा रवेर्वापि रविं विहाय जवादहो कास्विदितः समेति॥५॥
“‘Has a star descended from the starry path, or moonlight from the full moon's orb? Has the sun's brilliance left the sun? Ah, who can this be, coming so swiftly?’
Passage 6
केचित्तां वीक्ष्य कपयः सीताबुद्ध्या महाप्रभाम्। अवाङ्मुखदृशस्तस्थुश्चित्रेषु लिखिता इव॥६॥
“Some monkeys saw the greatly radiant woman and took her to be Sītā. Lowering their faces and eyes, they stood as still as figures painted in a picture.
Passage 7
केचित्सकृत्समालोक्य कान्तिपूरेण भूयसा। आच्छन्ननयनाः कीशा न पुनर्वीक्षितुं क्षमाः॥७॥
“Some monkeys looked at her once, but their eyes were overwhelmed by the immense flood of radiance and they could not look again.
Passage 8
केचित्सौन्दर्यमालोक्य विपुलं तदलौकिकम्। शिरांसि कम्पयामासुः कपयो जातविस्मयाः॥८॥
“Some beheld her vast, unearthly beauty and shook their heads in astonishment.
Passage 9
केऽपि श्लाघां वितन्वानाः कपयः शुद्धबुद्धयः। न वै वर्णयितुं शक्ता अभवञ्जातकौतुकाः॥९॥
“Other pure-minded monkeys began to praise her, but although filled with wonder, they were unable to describe her.
Passage 10
इत्थमाच्छिद्य सर्वेषां नेत्राणि च मनांसि सा। श्रीरामसविधं प्राप यत्र भर्तुः शिरो धृतम्॥१०॥
“Thus captivating everyone's eyes and minds, she reached Śrī Rāma's presence, where her husband's head was being kept. Sulochanā Enters Rāma's Presence
Passage 11
श्लाघते यत्र सौमित्रिं हस्तस्पर्शनलालनैः। आमृशन् परितोऽङ्गानि रामो नित्वानिमागतिम्॥११॥
“There Rāma praised Saumitri, affectionately caressing him and passing his hands over his limbs.
Passage 12
आस्फोटितभुजा यत्र हनुमत्प्रमुखा भटाः। सोत्साहवदनाः कामं वीक्ष्यन्ते रघुभानुना॥१२॥
“There the warriors led by Hanumān struck their arms in triumph, their eager faces receiving the full gaze of the Sun of Raghu's line.
Passage 13
यत्र श्लाघापरस्तेषां रामो वीक्ष्य महच्छिरः। लक्ष्मणस्य शरान् स्तौति गिरिनिर्दलनक्षमान्॥१३॥
“There, intent upon praising those warriors, Rāma examined the enormous head and extolled Lakṣmaṇa's arrows, which were capable of crushing mountains.
Passage 14
तत्र प्रविश्य सा बाला पूर्णेन्दुवदनोज्ज्वला। अस्तौत्प्रणम्य श्रीमन्तं राघवेन्द्रं सुलोचना॥१४॥
“The radiant, full-moon-faced young woman entered that place. Bowing down, Sulochanā praised the glorious Lord of the Raghus.
Passage 15
नमस्ते पुरुषश्रेष्ठ ऋग्यजुःसामसंस्तुत। समस्तत्रिदशाधीश पूर्णसर्वकलानिधे॥१५॥
“‘Homage to you, best of persons, praised by the Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas; Lord of all the gods and complete treasury of every divine power.
Passage 16
जानामि त्वामवतीर्णं धरायां भारापनोदाय परं पुमांसम्। विरञ्चिना प्रार्थितः सूर्यवंशे आविष्कृतानन्तपूर्णस्वरूपम्॥१६॥
“‘I know you as the supreme Person descended upon the earth to remove her burden—manifest in the solar dynasty at Brahmā's prayer, your infinite and complete nature revealed.
Passage 17
विपर्यासाद्भागधेयस्य रक्षो नाज्ञासीत्त्वां श्वशुरो मे दशास्यः। स तत्फलं प्राप साक्षात्त्वयेश क्रोधादीषत्संहृतं तत्कुलं यत्॥१७॥
“‘Because his fortune had turned against him, my ten-faced rākṣasa father-in-law did not recognize you. Lord, he has now received the direct fruit: in your anger his line has been all but destroyed. Sulochanā Prays for Devotion and Reunion

स मत्पिता नागराट् शेषसंज्ञो गृणाति दिव्यैर्नामभिस्त्वामजस्रम्। तत्राश्रौषं नाम धाम स्वरूपं तव श्रीमन् विश्वतोऽनन्तकीर्तेः॥१८॥
“‘My father is the serpent king named Śeṣa, and he constantly sings of you through your divine names. From him I heard of your name, abode, and nature, glorious Lord whose fame is infinite throughout the universe.
Passage 19
त्वमेव राम प्रमुदाटवीस्थः करोषि लीलाः सहजानन्दिनीश। श्रीमति सरय्वाः पुलिने त्वमेव नित्यं विहरस्यप्रमेयप्रभाव॥१९॥
“‘Rāma, you alone dwell in Pramudā Forest and perform pastimes as the Lord of Sahajānandinī. You alone eternally sport upon the beautiful bank of the Sarayū, your majesty beyond all measure.
Passage 20
त्वां गोपिकाः श्रुतिदेवर्षिरूपा भजन्तेऽन्तः कामतत्त्वेन पूर्णाः। प्राप्ताहं त्वां शरणं तद्वदेव त्रायस्व मां न त्यज प्राणनाथ॥२०॥
“‘The gopikās, embodiments of the Vedas and divine sages and fulfilled in the inner principle of sacred love, worship you. I have likewise taken refuge in you. Protect me, Lord of my life; do not abandon me.
Passage 21
एतद्दृष्ट्वा पञ्चभूतप्रभूतं शरीरं मे ह्यासुरं भावमाप्तम्। चितानले दीप्तशिखे क्षणेन प्राप्तास्मि त्वामात्मनः प्रेष्ठमीशम्॥२१॥
“‘Seeing that this body of mine, compounded from the five elements, has assumed a demonic condition, I shall enter the blazing funeral fire and in a moment attain you, my own dearest Lord.
Passage 22
न जातु मे त्वत्पदाम्भोजभक्तिविच्छेदः स्यादिति सम्प्रार्थयामि। अमोघसेवाभजनप्रकारं त्वामीश को नाम भजेन्न विद्वान्॥२२॥
“‘I pray that my devotion to your lotus feet may never be broken. Lord, what discerning person would fail to worship you through the unfailing way of service and devotion?
Passage 23
अयं च मे देहसम्बन्धनिष्ठः पतिस्तवैवास्तु जन सदेशः। मत्संगतोऽस्यासुरभावनाशे भावस्त्वदीयः प्रकटोऽस्त्वस्य चित्ते॥२३॥
“‘May this husband of mine, bound to me through the body, become your own servant in a worthy realm. Through his association with me, when his demonic nature is destroyed, may devotion to you become manifest in his heart.
Passage 24
इत्यनेन शरीरेण सहयुक्तामुना प्रभो। ज्वलिष्यामि समिद्धेऽग्नौ भविष्यामि सहैव च॥२४॥
“‘Lord, joined to him in this body, I shall burn in the kindled fire and shall remain together with him.
Passage 25
आवामुभौ करिष्यावस्तव दास्यं रघूद्वह। जन्मान्तरं परिप्राप्य निवृत्तासुरभावनौ॥२५॥
“‘Best of the Raghus, upon obtaining another birth, both of us—freed from demonic nature—shall render service to you.
Passage 26
देहि शीर्षमिदं नाथ येनाहं सहितानले। दहेयं देहमेतं वै लब्धुं दिव्यतरं वपुः॥२६॥
“‘Lord, give me this head so that I may burn this body with it in the fire and obtain a body more divine.’ Hanumān Counsels Rāma and Sulochanā Enters the Pyre
Passage 27
इति तस्याः स्तवैरेभिः प्रससाद रघूद्वहः। पुनर्जीवयितुं तस्या भर्तारकमकरोन्मतिम्॥२७॥
“Pleased by these praises of hers, the best of the Raghus formed the intention of bringing her husband back to life.
Passage 28
तावद्धनुमानुत्थाय बद्धाञ्जलिपुटः सुधीः। पुरो विज्ञापयामास सुप्रसन्नं रघूद्वहम्॥२८॥
“Just then, wise Hanumān rose, joined his palms, and addressed the gracious Lord of the Raghus before him.
Passage 29
अयं प्रभो महावीरः समरे संचरन्मुहुः। कृच्छ्रेण लक्ष्मणेनेव दिनैः षड्भिर्निपातितः॥२९॥
“‘Lord, this great warrior repeatedly ranged across the battlefield, and Lakṣmaṇa brought him down only with immense difficulty over six days.
Passage 30
तदलं सम्प्रसादेन पुनर्जीवय मा रिपुम्। जन्मान्तरे तु देह्यस्यै यदसौ याचते सती॥३०॥
“‘Therefore let that favor go no further; do not revive our enemy. Instead, in another birth grant this faithful woman what she requests.’
Passage 31
इति श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वचः शत्रुनिषूदनः। शिरोऽस्यै प्रददौ भर्तुर्गृहीत्वा सा प्रणम्य तम्॥३१॥
“Hearing Hanumān's words, the destroyer of enemies gave her the head of her husband. She accepted it and bowed to him.
Passage 32
जगाम पावके दीप्ते मलयेधःकदम्बकैः। आज्योक्षितैश्चितामध्ये आरुरोह सुलोचना॥३२॥
“Sulochanā went to the blazing fire and mounted the funeral pyre, which was heaped with clusters of Malaya wood sprinkled with ghee.
Passage 33
शेषपुत्र्याः प्रभावेण स पुनर्भविता किल। प्रमुदेने तया सार्धं सुमुखो नाम गोपतिः॥३३॥
“Through the power of Śeṣa's daughter, he will indeed be born again. Together with her in Pramudā's realm, he will be a cowherd named Sumukha.
Passage 34
तद्वधूस्तत्र सुलोचनेव नाम्ना प्रसिद्धा प्रमुदाटवीस्था। श्रीरामवंशीरवमाकलय्य तदन्तिकं प्राप्स्यति सा विलासे॥३४॥
