Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— श्रुत्वेन्द्रजिद्वधं कृष्णचतुर्दश्यां दशाननः। गाढशोकभरेणाशु संरुद्धहृदयो भृशम्॥१॥
Brahmā said: “On the dark fortnight's fourteenth day, the ten-headed Rāvaṇa heard of Indrajit's death. A crushing weight of grief immediately constricted his heart.
Passage 2
मुमोह मूर्छितो भूमौ निपपात सुविह्वलः। निकृत्तमूलो विपुलः क्षोणीरुह इवोच्छ्रितः॥२॥
“Overcome and senseless, he fainted and fell to the ground like a lofty, massive tree cut off at its roots.
Passage 3
चिरेण चेतनां लब्ध्वा रुरोदोच्चैस्तरामसौ। दरीमिव प्रतिध्वानैर्दिशो मुखरयन् रवैः॥३॥
“After a long while he regained consciousness and wailed exceedingly loudly, making the quarters echo with his cries like a mountain cavern.
Passage 4
करुणस्वरसंजातसुहृद्बन्धुदयोदयः। विललाप चिरं तस्य स्मारं स्मारं गुणोत्करम्॥४॥
“His pitiful voice stirred the grief of friends and kinsmen. Remembering again and again his son's host of virtues, he lamented for a long time.
Passage 5
हा पुत्र हा महावीर हा वत्स गुणमन्दिर। हा बन्धुजनसर्वस्व किमभूत्किमभूदिदम्॥५॥
“‘Alas, my son! Alas, great hero! My child, dwelling place of virtue, treasure of all your kinsmen—what has happened? What has happened?
Passage 6
हा पुत्र तद्दिनं यत्र जित्वा स्वर्गपुरीपतिम्। भवान् लब्धेन्द्रजित्ख्यातिरागतोऽभूदिमां पुरीम्॥६॥
“‘My son, on that day you conquered the lord of heaven's city and returned here bearing the celebrated name Indrajit, Conqueror of Indra.
Passage 7
वीर त्वं लीलया जैषीः सुरसद्मानि कोटिशः। बन्दीकृत्य सुरश्रेणीः कशाघातैरताडयत्॥७॥
“‘Hero, in sport you conquered hosts of celestial dwellings, imprisoned ranks of gods, and struck them with lashes.
Passage 8
वत्स त्वं समरे शत्रून् जित्वा जित्वा जगत्त्रये। चक्रे मम समुत्कर्षं लङ्काराज्यपदस्थितौ॥८॥
“‘Child, by repeatedly defeating enemies throughout the three worlds, you exalted me upon Laṅkā's royal throne.
Passage 9
त्वयाहं राजराजत्वं गमितो भुवनत्रये। प्रतिभूपशिखारत्नरोचिनीराजिताङ्घ्रिकम्॥९॥
“‘Through you I attained sovereignty over kings in the three worlds, my feet illumined by the crown jewels of rival rulers bowing before me.
Passage 10
स त्वमद्य विपर्यासान्मम भाग्यस्य पुत्रक। शेषे संग्रामधरणौ पुनर्जागरणोज्झितः॥१०॥
“‘Yet today, my son, through the reversal of my fortune, you lie upon the battlefield, never to awaken again.
Passage 11
विमाय यस्य विशिखैर्यमोऽपि समराङ्गणे। सन्त्रासितो दिक्षु वित्रस्तोऽविशन्मेरुगुहागृहान्॥११॥
“‘Even Yama, struck with terror by your arrows in battle, fled through the quarters and entered the cavern-houses of Mount Meru.
Passage 12
स त्वां कथं नु जघान दण्डभृद् हृष्टचेतनः। गुहागतिं कृपाशीलं नावैति किं वा भयानकम्॥१२॥
“‘How then did that exultant wielder of punishment kill you? Does he not know the terrible consequence of driving a compassionate hero into the caves?
Passage 13
हा हाद्य दुर्नयः कोऽयं कामं जीवति रावणः। मृतश्चेवेन्द्रजित्पुत्र इत्युपश्रुत्य उत्कटाः॥१३॥
“‘Alas, what monstrous injustice is this today? Rāvaṇa continues to live as he pleases while his son Indrajit is dead! Those terrible words—
Passage 14
दुःश्रवा घ्नन्ति स्वान्तं मामकीनं मुहुर्मुहुः। इह ते बान्धवाः पुत्र त्वां विना सर्वसौहृदाः॥१४॥
“‘so painful to hear—strike my heart again and again. My son, all your loving kinsmen here are now without you.
Passage 15
जीविष्यन्ति कथं नाम येषां शय्यासनादिषु। त्वमेकः प्राणवर्गस्य मानदः स्थितिसाधनम्॥१५॥
“‘How will they live when you alone, giver of honor, sustained the lives of all who shared your couches, seats, and household?
Passage 16
इत्यादि विलपञ्छोकशल्यविक्षतमानसः। हा हेति चूर्णितमनाश्चक्रन्द सुचिरं हतः॥१६॥
“Thus lamenting, his heart pierced by the dart of grief and his mind shattered, the stricken Rāvaṇa cried ‘Alas! Alas!’ for a long time.
Passage 17
युद्धावहारमकरोत्तद्दिने भृशदुःखितः। बहिरन्तश्चतुर्दिक्षु पश्यन् विश्वं तमोमयम्॥१७॥
“Deeply afflicted, he suspended the battle for that day. Inside and out, in all four directions, the whole world appeared dark to him. Mandodarī and the Palace Women Grieve
Passage 18
विविश्यान्तःपुरमथ क्लान्तपद्मवनाननः। यत्र मन्दोदरीमुख्या रुदन्त्यः सुभृशं हताः॥१८॥
“His faces like a grove of withered lotuses, he then entered the women's quarters, where Mandodarī and the other women wept, utterly stricken.
Passage 19
अन्योन्यबान्धवो बन्धूनालिङ्ग्यालिङ्ग्य दुःखिताः। उत्पतन्त्यः पतन्त्यश्च राक्षस्यो गतचेतनाः॥१९॥
“The grieving rākṣasa women repeatedly embraced one another and their kin, springing up and falling down as consciousness left them.
Passage 20
लोचनाम्बुपरीवाहैः सृजन्त्योऽनेकवाहिनीः। दृष्ट्वेदं भूरिसंतप्ता महिषी व्यलपत्तराम्॥२०॥
“The floods flowing from their eyes made many rivers. Seeing this, the queen, scorched by immense anguish, lamented still more.
Passage 21
हा मत्कृतस्तव निबन्धाज्जातो रामेण संगरः। ईदृग्विधानि रत्नानि ह्रियन्ते यत्र वै त्वया॥२१॥
“‘Alas, because of my deed and your obstinacy, this war with Rāma arose—a war in which treasures such as this son of yours are taken away.
Passage 22
त्वदर्थं त्यक्तजीवोऽयं मदङ्कमणिरुत्तमः। यमस्य शासनं यातः क पुनर्दृश्यतां मया॥२२॥
“‘For your sake this finest jewel of my lap has given up his life and gone to Yama's domain. When will he ever be seen by me again?
Passage 23
हितं त्वदीयं लङ्केशः कृतिधा नोदितं मया। नाविशत्ते मनो नाथ भाविनार्थेन हीदृशा॥२३॥
“‘Lord of Laṅkā, I repeatedly urged what was good for you, but it did not enter your mind because an end such as this was destined.
Passage 24
अवशिष्टमिदानीं मे मानसौभाग्यभूतिषु। न किंचिद्राक्षसाधीश गते शक्रजिति क्षयम्॥२४॥
“‘Lord of the rākṣasas, now that Indrajit has perished, nothing remains of the prosperity, good fortune, and riches dear to my heart.’
Passage 25
इत्यादिभिर्विलपनैर्मन्दोदर्याः सहस्रशः। अर्पितानीव शल्यानि दशवक्त्रस्य चेतसि॥२५॥
“Mandodarī's thousands of such lamentations seemed to plant fresh darts in the ten-headed king's heart. Sulochanā Seeks Her Husband's Head
Passage 26
तस्मिन् मुहूर्ते सोत्साहं नाम्ना देवी सुलोचना। भर्तारमनुयास्यन्ती श्वशुरौ सा व्यजिज्ञपत्॥२६॥
“At that moment the noble woman named Sulochanā, resolute upon following her husband, made a request to both her parents-in-law.
Passage 27
आज्ञां मे कुरुतं सत्यमनुयास्यामि वां सुतम्। भर्तारं प्राणदयितमागो मे क्षन्तुमर्हथः॥२७॥
“‘Grant me permission. I shall truly follow your son, my husband dearer than life. Please forgive whatever offense is mine.
Passage 28
यन्मयाभिहितं किंचित्कृतं वा सदसच्च वा। तत्सर्वं बान्धवजनैः साकं मे क्षन्तुमर्हथः॥२८॥
“‘Whatever I have said or done, whether good or bad, please forgive it all, together with every member of the family.
Passage 29
याति मे समयः कश्चिदविलम्बाह उत्तरः। तदाज्ञामेव दत्तं मे श्वशुरौ देवतौ मम॥२९॥
“‘My appointed time is passing, and I must not delay further. My parents-in-law are my deities; grant me only that permission.
Passage 30
नमामि चरणौ मातर्मन्दोदरि महासति। अनुज्ञां देहि मे सत्यं न विलम्बक्षणो ह्ययम्॥३०॥
“‘Mother Mandodarī, most faithful wife, I bow at your feet. Truly, give me leave; this is not a moment for delay.
Passage 31
नमस्ते रक्षसां पत्ये लङ्कानाथाय धीमते। महामानेकविधये महोग्राय महीयसे॥३१॥
“‘Homage to you, wise lord of Laṅkā and ruler of the rākṣasas, immeasurably honored, mighty in many ways, terrible, and exalted.’
Passage 32
इत्युक्त्वा साञ्जलिर्देवी शेषकन्या महामनाः। रुदतीस्ताः स्त्रियः सर्वा मुहूर्तं संन्यवारयत्॥३२॥
“Having spoken thus with joined palms, the noble daughter of Śeṣa briefly calmed all the weeping women.
Passage 33
तस्याः सत्त्वं समालोक्य सर्वा अन्तःपुरस्त्रियः। अस्तभ्नुः शोकवाष्पाणि यावत्सा संनिधौ स्थिता॥३३॥
“Seeing her courage, all the women of the inner palace held back their tears of grief for as long as she remained before them.
Passage 34
सा गत्वा रणभूमिमातुरमना दृष्ट्वा विशीर्णं पतिं शोकार्तास्य शिरोऽर्थिनी रघुपतेः सैन्यं प्रसह्याव्रजत्। प्रत्यङ्गद्युतिचन्द्रिकासमुदयैरुच्छ्रप्रकाशं दिशां कुर्वन्ती शरत्पूर्णिमा मयमधात्तत्कृष्णभूतादिनम्॥३४॥
“Distraught, she went to the battlefield and saw her husband dismembered. Grief-stricken and seeking his head, she boldly approached Raghupati's army. The rising moonlight of every radiant limb filled the quarters with lofty brilliance, transforming that darkened day into an autumn full-moon night.”
