Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे भ्रातरि प्राणसम्मिते। शोकार्दितो दशमुखः सुभृशं त्रिललाप ह॥१॥
Brahmā said: “When that hero, his brother dear as life, had fallen, the ten-faced king was overcome by grief and lamented bitterly.
Passage 2
हा भ्रातः प्राणदयित हा वीर परभीषण। हा बन्धुजनसर्वस्व प्राप्तस्त्वमपि पञ्चताम्॥२॥
“‘Alas, brother dearer than life! Alas, hero who terrified your foes! Alas, treasure of all your kindred! Even you have met death.
Passage 3
यस्मिल्लघुरुषाविष्टे त्यक्त्वा सद्मानि निर्जराः। पलायन्ते स्मृतिभृतं लीयन्ते गिरिकुक्षिषु॥३॥
“‘When you were seized by even a little anger, the gods abandoned their dwellings, fled in terror, and hid inside mountain caves.
Passage 4
न यत्प्रतिबलो लोके दृष्टो वाप्यथवा श्रुतः। सुरकिन्नरमार्गेषु कुतो मर्त्येषु दृश्यताम्॥४॥
“‘No equal of yours has ever been seen or heard of in the world, among the gods or kinnaras—how then could one be found among mortals?
Passage 5
स त्वमद्य खलु भ्रातर्मदर्थं त्यक्तजीवितः। सुप्तो रणाङ्गणगतो न पुनर्बोधमेष्यसि॥५॥
“‘Yet today, brother, you surrendered your life for my sake. Fallen asleep upon the battlefield, you will never awaken again.
Passage 6
हा रणाङ्गणदुर्वार हा शत्रुबलकम्पन। हा प्रतापोदयगिरे केन त्वं युधि पातितः॥६॥
“‘Alas, irresistible upon the battlefield! Alas, shaker of enemy armies! O mountain from which splendor rose, who brought you down in battle?
Passage 7
स महावीरविख्यातस्त्रैलोक्यविजयोर्जित। यमोऽपि त्वां कथं नाम करिष्यति गृहातिथिम्॥७॥
“‘Celebrated as a supreme hero and strengthened by victory over the three worlds, how could even Yama dare make you a guest in his house?
Passage 8
यस्त्वां युधि समालोक्य पुरा वासवपक्षगः। तूर्णं महिषमारुह्य पलायत दिशो दश॥८॥
“‘Long ago, when that ally of Indra saw you in battle, he swiftly mounted his buffalo and fled through the ten directions.
Passage 9
हा भ्रातर्मे जयोत्साहो नूनं त्वदवधि स्थितः। इदानीं शत्रुविजयः कृतोऽपि खलु मे वृथा॥९॥
“‘Alas, brother, my zeal for victory surely endured only as long as you. Now even victory over the enemy would be worthless to me.
Passage 10
हा भ्रातः कुम्भकर्णाद्य त्वां विना रक्षसां कुलात्। प्रोषिताः श्रीयशोवीर्यजयोत्साहमदादयः॥१०॥
“‘Alas, brother Kumbhakarṇa! Now that you are gone, splendor, fame, valor, the ardor of victory, pride, and every excellence have departed from the rākṣasa race.
Passage 11
हा वीर त्वां रणमुखे घातयित्वाद्य दुर्भगः। अहं जीवामि लोकेऽस्मिन् धिङ्मामनुचितायुषम्॥११॥
“‘Alas, hero! Having caused your death at the front of battle, wretched I still live in this world. Shame upon my unworthy life!’
Passage 12
इत्यादि बहुशो वाग्भिर्विलपन् दशकन्धरः। अरोदीद्विवशस्वान्तो दिशो मुखरयन् दश॥१२॥
“Lamenting again and again in such words, the ten-necked king wept with a helpless heart and made all ten directions resound. Laṅkā Falls Silent in Grief
Passage 13
तमन्वरोदिषुः सर्वे राक्षसानां वधूजनाः। अन्तःपुरनिवासिन्यः स्त्रियो मन्दोदरीमुखाः॥१३॥
“All the wives of the rākṣasas wept after him, including Mandodarī and the other women living in the inner palace.
Passage 14
सुमहान् पतितः शोको राक्षसानां गृहे गृहे। कुम्भकर्णे हते तेषां जयाशापि हताभवत्॥१४॥
“Immense grief descended upon every rākṣasa household. With Kumbhakarṇa slain, their hope of victory was slain as well.
Passage 15
अमायां फाल्गुने मासि कुम्भकर्णविलापिनाम्। रक्षसां रावणादीनां जगदासीत्तमोमयम्॥१५॥
“On the new-moon day of Phālguna, the world became filled with darkness for Rāvaṇa and the other rākṣasas mourning Kumbhakarṇa.
Passage 16
युद्धावहारः समभूत्तस्मिञ्शोकभये दिने। न कापि श्रूयते घोषो जयोत्साहविवर्धनः॥१६॥
“Battle was suspended on that day of grief and fear. Nowhere was heard a sound that might increase the ardor for victory.
Passage 17
सुप्तेवासीत् पुरी कृत्स्ना सर्वैः शोकपरायणैः। मृदङ्गगोमुखनिःसानदुन्दुभीपटहारवाः॥१७॥
“The whole city seemed asleep, for everyone was absorbed in grief. The sounds of mṛdaṅgas, gomukhas, drums, kettledrums, and paṭahas—
Passage 18
लुप्तध्वजपताकश्रीर्विलुप्तजयनिःस्वना। कृतमौननिराटोपैर्निरास्फोटयिता राक्षसैः॥१८॥
“—had ceased. Its beauty of standards and banners was gone, its victory cries had vanished, and the rākṣasas stood silent, without display or defiant slapping of arms. Rāvaṇa Submits the Disaster to Fate
Passage 19
अथ लङ्केश्वरः शोकात् प्रविश्यान्तःपुरं रुदन्। बन्धुस्त्रीजनमध्यस्थो विललाप चिरं बहु॥१९॥
“Weeping in grief, the lord of Laṅkā entered the inner palace. Surrounded by the women of his family, he lamented at length.
Passage 20
ततः समादधौ वाग्भिः स्वयमेव स पण्डितः। रुदन्तीः शोकनिमग्नाः कुम्भकर्णस्य योषितः॥२०॥
“Then, being learned, he himself used words to steady Kumbhakarṇa's wives, who were weeping and submerged in grief.
Passage 21
येनासौ निहतो युद्धे भ्राता मे प्राणसम्मितः। तमहं निहनिष्यामि नचिरात् संख्यमूर्धनि॥२१॥
“‘I will soon kill upon the summit of battle the one who slew in combat this brother of mine, dear as my own life.
Passage 22
किं करोमि न शोकान्तं पश्यामि विलपन् मुहुः। सोदरं तादृशं वीरं कुम्भकर्णं प्रियं मम॥२२॥
“‘What can I do? Though I lament again and again for my beloved brother, the heroic Kumbhakarṇa, I see no end to grief.
Passage 23
किंतु दैवं श्रिये यद्धि सर्वेभ्यो बलवत्तरम्। दैवं सर्वं प्रविन्यस्य पुनर्योत्स्यामि संयुगे॥२३॥
“‘But fate must be honored, for it is stronger than all. Entrusting everything to fate, I will fight again in battle.
Passage 24
जानामि रामं नाशाय सर्वेषां नः समागतम्। जानाम्यधर्मं तत्पत्न्या हरणं लोकगर्हितम्॥२४॥
“‘I know that Rāma has come to destroy us all. I know that abducting his wife was unrighteous and condemned by the world.
Passage 25
तथापि दैववशगः सर्वमेव करोम्यहम्। सर्वमेतज्जगद्येन चक्रवद्भ्राम्यते यतः॥२५॥
“‘Nevertheless, subject to fate, I do everything as I do, for by fate this whole world is made to revolve like a wheel.
Passage 26
इति मत्वातिशोकं मा कुरुतान्तःपुराबलाः। चिकीर्षतोऽग्रिमं कार्यमुत्साहं मे न कृन्तत॥२६॥
“‘Therefore, women of the inner palace, think in this way and do not grieve excessively. Do not cut down my resolve as I seek to accomplish the next task.
Passage 27
अहं जीवामि चेल्लोके सर्वशत्रुवधोद्यतः। तदेतदुत्खनिष्यामि शल्यं वः शत्रुनिर्मितम्॥२७॥
“‘If I remain alive in this world, intent upon killing every enemy, I will tear out this enemy-made barb that pierces you.’
Passage 28
इति विविधवचोभिर्बन्धुमातृस्नुषास्त्री- प्रमुखमखिललोकं किंचिदाश्वास्य धीरः। बहिरगमदनेकान् राक्षसेषु प्रधानान् गमयितुमभियोद्धुं राघवेन्द्रेण युद्धे॥२८॥
“With these varied words the resolute king gave some comfort to the entire household—kinsmen, mothers, daughters-in-law, and women foremost among them. He then went outside to send many leading rākṣasas to contend with the lord of the Raghus in battle.”
