Passage 1
लक्ष्मण उवाच— पश्य पश्याद्य समरे रक्षसानेन कोटिशः। भक्षिता वानरभटाः कृतं शून्यं रणाङ्गणम्॥१॥
Lakṣmaṇa said: “Look, look! Today in battle this rākṣasa has devoured monkey warriors by the millions and emptied the battlefield.
Passage 2
जह्येनं राक्षसश्रेष्ठं रावणावरजं रणे। भक्षयन्तं कपिभटान् मुखे निक्षिप्य कोटिशः॥२॥
“Kill this foremost rākṣasa, Rāvaṇa's younger brother, who is throwing monkey warriors into his mouth and devouring them by the millions.
Passage 3
विशिखैः शीघ्रगमनैर्दारुणैर्वज्रपातिभिः। छित्त्वावयवशः कृत्स्नं पातयैनं रणाङ्गणे॥३॥
“Cut him completely limb from limb with dreadful, swift-flying arrows that strike like thunderbolts, and bring him down upon the battlefield.
Passage 4
अनेन बहुविक्रान्तं घोरकायेन रक्षसा। इदानीं नैव सोढव्य एषोऽस्मानतिवर्तते॥४॥
“This rākṣasa of terrible body has already wrought immense destruction. He must no longer be endured, for he is overwhelming us.
Passage 5
कपीन् भक्षयते घोरो गर्जत्येष भयानकः। दृष्ट्वा दृष्ट्वा रणोत्साहः सर्वेषां परिहीयते॥५॥
“The dreadful monster devours the monkeys and roars fearfully. Each time they look upon him, everyone's courage for battle ebbs away.” Aṅgada Escapes and Kumbhakarṇa Turns Back
Passage 6
इति यावदसौ प्राह रामं युधि धनुर्धरम्। तावत्कक्षेऽङ्गदं न्यस्य कुम्भकर्णोऽव्रजद्रणात्॥६॥
“While Lakṣmaṇa spoke thus to bow-bearing Rāma in battle, Kumbhakarṇa tucked Aṅgada beneath his arm and began to leave the battlefield.
Passage 7
स तस्य निहितः कक्षे वालिसूनुर्महाबलः। विमोच्य तरसात्मानं विलूय श्रुतिनासिकम्॥७॥
“Mighty Aṅgada, Vāli's son, freed himself by force from the giant's armpit after tearing away his ears and nose.
Passage 8
ययौ जवात् समुत्पत्य ततश्चुक्रोध राक्षसः। अहोऽस्य कपिडिम्भस्य बलं यन्मम कक्षतः॥८॥
“He sprang away at speed, and the rākṣasa grew enraged: ‘How astonishing is the strength of this young monkey, who escaped from beneath my arm!
Passage 9
मोचयित्वा तनुं स्वीयां प्रययौ वेगसंयुतः। विरूपं चापि मां चक्रे विलूय श्रुतिनासिकम्॥९॥
“‘He freed his own body and sped away, and he disfigured me by tearing off my ears and nose.
Passage 10
इदानीं किमहं यामि विलूनश्रुतिनासिकः। हासाय लङ्कावास्तूनां भविष्यामि न खल्वहम्॥१०॥
“‘Where can I go now, with ears and nose cut away? I will certainly not become an object of ridicule for the residents of Laṅkā.’
Passage 11
इति निश्चित्य मनसा स पराववृते रणे। ददर्श तं रघुश्रेष्ठः परावृत्ततमं तदा॥११॥
“Having resolved this in his mind, he turned back upon the battlefield, and the foremost Raghu saw him returning.
Passage 12
आनुहाव ततो रामं योद्धुं राक्षसपुङ्गवः। अन्तकं स्वस्य मन्वानो जन्मान्तरकृतस्मृतिः॥१२॥
“The foremost rākṣasa then challenged Rāma to fight. Remembering what had occurred in a former birth, he regarded Rāma as his own death.
Passage 13
एह्येहि मां रघुश्रेष्ठ युद्धं मे देहि सम्प्रति। कण्डूयेते मम भुजौ सुप्तस्य सुचिरं हरे॥१३॥
“‘Come, come, foremost Raghu! Fight me now. O Hari, after my long sleep my two arms itch for combat.
Passage 14
कोऽन्यो वीरस्त्वादृशो राघवेन्द्र बद्धः सेतुर्येन सिन्धौ स्वशक्त्या। श्लाघ्योऽहं स्यां यदि तु त्वां जयेयं त्वं चेन्मां वै विजेथास्तथापि॥१४॥
“‘What other hero is like you, lord of the Raghus, who by your own power built a bridge across the ocean? If I defeat you I will deserve praise, and I will deserve it even if you defeat me.’ Rāma and Kumbhakarṇa Exchange Weapons
Passage 15
इत्युक्त्वा प्राहिणोत्तस्मिन् गदां स्वां तडिदायताम्। हुंकारेणैव तां रामः पातयामास भूतले॥१५॥
“With these words Kumbhakarṇa hurled at him his club, long as a lightning bolt. With only a roar, Rāma made it fall to the ground.
Passage 16
रामस्य हुंकाररवेण तस्यां पराहतायां प्रसभं गदायाम्। चुक्षोभ चित्तेन स कुम्भकर्णो महाबलस्तं प्रजिघाय खड्गम्॥१६॥
“When his club was violently repelled by the sound of Rāma's roar, mighty Kumbhakarṇa became agitated and launched his sword at him.
Passage 17
रामः खड्गं द्विधा चक्रे तीक्ष्णेन स्वमहेषुणा। ततोऽस्त्रपूगान् विविधान् प्राक्षिपद् रघुपुङ्गवे॥१७॥
“Rāma split the sword in two with his own sharp, mighty arrow. Kumbhakarṇa then discharged hosts of varied missiles at the foremost Raghu.
Passage 18
खड्गशूलगदाचक्रभुशुण्डीप्रासतोमरैः। शक्तिमुद्गरकुन्ताद्यैः परशुपरिघपट्टिशैः॥१८॥
“With swords, spears, clubs, discs, bhuśuṇḍīs, lances, and javelins; with darts, hammers, pikes, axes, iron bars, and battle-axes—
Passage 19
बाणैश्च धनुरान्मुक्तैः सानुजं तमवाकिरत्। वर्षासु धारासम्पातैस्तडित्वानिव पर्वतम्॥१९॥
“—and with arrows released from bows, he covered Rāma and his brother as a lightning-bearing cloud covers a mountain with torrents in the rainy season.
Passage 20
शस्त्रास्त्रपूगैर्विविधैः कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः। अन्येषां रक्षसां चैतत्तत्पृष्ठे परितिष्ठताम्॥२०॥
“These varied masses of weapons and missiles came from the rākṣasa Kumbhakarṇa and from the other rākṣasas standing behind him.
Passage 21
आच्छन्नं रघुशार्दूलं सानुजं वीक्ष्य वानराः। वित्रस्ताः स्वेन मनसा चिन्तामापुः क्षणं रणे॥२१॥
“Seeing the tiger among the Raghus and his younger brother completely hidden, the monkeys grew terrified and for a moment gave way to anxiety in battle.
Passage 22
ततो रामो धनुर्मुक्तैः सायकैरतिदारुणैः। नानाशस्त्रास्त्रपूगानि कुम्भकर्णस्य गर्जतः॥२२॥
“Then Rāma, with exceedingly dreadful arrows released from his bow, struck the many masses of weapons and missiles belonging to the roaring Kumbhakarṇa—

अच्छिनत्तान् क्षणेनैव भास्वानिव हिमोच्चयम्। आविरास ततश्चैष सानुजो धृतकार्मुकः॥२३॥
“—and cut them apart in a moment, as the shining sun dissolves a mass of snow. He then reappeared with his brother, bow in hand. The Five-Day Duel and Kumbhakarṇa's Death

ततस्तयोरभूद्घोरं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम्। परस्परविनिर्मुक्तसायकच्छन्नदिक्तटम्॥२४॥
“A terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising battle then arose between them, and the horizons were covered by the arrows they released against one another.
Passage 25
रामबाणप्रहारेण कुम्भकर्णस्य विग्रहात्। महाद्रिकूटकठिनादुदतिष्ठन्महारवः॥२५॥
“When Rāma's arrows struck Kumbhakarṇa's body, hard as the peak of a great mountain, a tremendous sound arose.
Passage 26
व्याप्तास्तेन रवेणात्र घोरेण सकला दिशः। यद्वदिन्द्रकरोन्मुक्तवज्रेण त्रुटितो गिरेः॥२६॥
“That dreadful sound filled every direction, like the crash of a mountain split by the thunderbolt released from Indra's hand.
Passage 27
एवं पञ्च दिनान्याजौ सुस्थिरोपमसंयुगे। युयुधे कुम्भकर्णाख्यो रावणावरजोऽसृपः॥२७॥
“Thus for five days Kumbhakarṇa, Rāvaṇa's younger brother, fought in a firmly sustained and unequaled battle.
Passage 28
षष्ठे दिने चतुर्दश्यां कृष्णायां रघुपुङ्गवः। अवधीत्तं महाघोरं मार्गणैः शीघ्रगामिभिः॥२८॥
“On the sixth day, the fourteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight, the foremost Raghu killed that dreadful giant with swift-flying arrows.
Passage 29
आकर्णाकृष्टचापं प्रचलदिषुगणैर्घोरनिर्घातघोषै- र्वेगादगच्छाद्धरिन्द्रप्रबलतरविनिर्मुक्तवज्रप्रपातैः। छित्त्वा छित्त्वा रघूणां पतिरवयवशः कुम्भकर्णस्य गात्रं संग्रामे तुङ्गभूमीधरशिखरनिभं पातयामास भूमौ॥२९॥
“Drawing his bow to his ear, the lord of the Raghus advanced swiftly with flights of arrows whose terrible crashes were mightier than the fall of thunderbolts released by Indra. Cutting Kumbhakarṇa's body repeatedly limb from limb, he brought the mountain-peak-like giant crashing to the ground in battle.”
