Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— अथ नानाविधैः शस्त्रैरस्त्रपूगैश्च दारुणैः। असज्जत महावीर्यो योद्धुं रामेण संयुगे॥१॥
Brahmā said: “The immensely valiant Kumbhakarṇa then armed himself with many kinds of weapons and terrible missiles in order to fight Rāma in battle.
Passage 2
महोग्रपर्वताकारः कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः। प्रणम्य भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठं प्रययौ कृतमङ्गलः॥२॥
“Mighty Kumbhakarṇa, huge and fearsome as a mountain, bowed to his elder brother and departed after the auspicious rites had been performed.
Passage 3
तमाह मुदितस्तत्र लङ्केशो लोकभीषणः। स्वस्त्यस्तु ते रणे शीघ्रं सपत्नं जहि राघवम्॥३॥
“The lord of Laṅkā, terror of the worlds, joyfully told him, ‘May all be well with you in battle. Quickly kill our enemy Rāghava.
Passage 4
जयोऽस्तु ते कुम्भकर्ण पुनरायाहि वीतभीः। हर्षयन् सुहृदो बन्धून् विश लङ्कापुरीं पुनः॥४॥
“‘May victory be yours, Kumbhakarṇa. Return without fear, gladden your friends and kinsmen, and enter the city of Laṅkā again.
Passage 5
गच्छाधुना महावीर्य हन्तुं शत्रुमदोद्धतान्। तव बाहुबलायत्त इदानीं विजयो मम॥५॥
“‘Go now, mighty warrior, to kill the enemies swollen with pride. My victory now depends upon the strength of your arms.’
Passage 6
इत्युक्त्वा विससर्जासौ भ्रातरं प्राणसम्मितम्। तं प्रयान्तं रणं योद्धुमनुजग्मुर्निशाचराः॥६॥
“With these words Rāvaṇa dismissed the brother he loved like life itself. As Kumbhakarṇa went to fight, the night-roamers followed him.
Passage 7
सर्वे गृहीतनिस्त्रिंशा आबद्धकवचा भटाः। महाजवा महाकायाः प्रावृषेण्या घना इव॥७॥
“Every warrior carried a sword and wore fastened armor. Immense in speed and body, they resembled clouds massed for the rainy season.
Passage 8
गर्जन्तो मदसम्पन्ना आस्फोटितभुजद्वयाः। निर्ययुस्तमनुक्रुद्धाः कोटिशो बद्धवैशसाः॥८॥
“Roaring and drunk with pride, they struck their arms in defiance and marched after him in furious millions, resolved upon slaughter.
Passage 9
स तेषां पुरतो गच्छन् कुम्भकर्णो महोद्धतः। स्तूयमानो यातुधानैर्महासंरम्भभीषणः॥९॥
“Kumbhakarṇa strode before them in towering arrogance. Praised by the rākṣasas, he was terrifying in his immense battle fury.
Passage 10
गदापाणिर्महोदण्ड आशंसितजयो निजैः। शुशुभे बद्धकवचस्तडित्वानिव वारिदः॥१०॥
“Club in hand, imposing in stature, and acclaimed as victorious by his own men, he shone in his armor like a lightning-bearing cloud.
Passage 11
अतिष्ठत् पर्वताकारः प्रविश्य समराङ्गणे। तं वीक्ष्य वानरभटा वित्रस्ताः परितोऽभवन्॥११॥
“The mountain-shaped giant entered the battlefield and took his stand. Seeing him, the monkey warriors all around became terrified. The Monkeys Swarm the Giant
Passage 12
स पपात महाभीमो वानराणां कदम्बके। आदायादाय हस्ताभ्यां मुखे चिक्षेप वानरान्॥१२॥
“The exceedingly dreadful giant fell upon the mass of monkeys, repeatedly seizing them in his hands and throwing them into his mouth.
Passage 13
दंष्ट्राभ्यां चूर्णयामास भक्षयामास तान् बहून्। सहस्रशो मुखे न्यस्ताश्चर्व्यन्ते कपयोऽमुना॥१३॥
“He crushed them between his fangs and devoured them in great numbers. Monkeys cast by the thousands into his mouth were chewed by him.
Passage 14
तेषां द्वित्रा मुखाद्भ्रष्टाः कूर्दित्वा यान्ति हस्ततः। तेऽपि क्रुद्धाः कपिभटाः परितो वेष्टयन्ति तम्॥१४॥
“Two or three slipped from his mouth, leapt free, and escaped his hands. The enraged monkey warriors nevertheless surrounded him on every side.
Passage 15
नखदन्तायुधैरुग्रैर्दूयन्तेऽङ्गानि तैर्भृशम्। आदायादाय सोऽत्युग्रस्तान् बभक्ष सहस्रशः॥१५॥
“They fiercely tormented his limbs with nails and teeth as weapons, but the savage giant kept seizing and devouring them by the thousands.
Passage 16
केचित्तस्य नखैर्दन्तैर्मुखमामोटयन्त च। केचिद्घ्राणद्वयं केचित्कर्णौ केऽपि विलोचने॥१६॥
“Some tore at his face with their nails and teeth, some attacked his two nostrils, some his ears, and others his eyes.
Passage 17
केऽपि दोर्मूलयुगलं केऽपि वक्षःस्थलं पुनः। तानधिक्षिपते चायं लुनतः परितो वपुः॥१७॥
“Some attacked the roots of his two arms and others his chest. As they tore at his body from every side, he hurled them away.
Passage 18
हस्ताभ्यां चैव पादाभ्यां विध्वंसयति वानरान्। ते ध्वंस्यमाना अपि तं न त्यजन्ति महोद्धटाः॥१८॥
“He destroyed the monkeys with both hands and feet, yet even while being crushed, those audacious warriors would not leave him.
Passage 19
महाद्रिकन्दराकारं दीर्णं तस्य मुखं रणे। महोग्रदंष्ट्राविकटं वीक्ष्य भीताः प्लवंगमाः॥१९॥
“The monkeys trembled when they saw his mouth yawning in battle like a cavern in a great mountain, fearsome with enormous fangs.
Passage 20
कपीनां चर्व्यमाणानां कुम्भकर्णेन रक्षसा। आसीत्कटकटाशब्दश्चूर्ण्यमानास्थिसम्भवः॥२०॥
“As the rākṣasa Kumbhakarṇa chewed the monkeys, a cracking sound arose from their bones being crushed. The Battlefield Becomes a Scene of Destruction
Passage 21
लग्नास्तद्दशनान्तरेषु कतिचित् संचूर्णितैर्मस्तकैः केचिच्छिन्नविभिन्नसर्ववपुषस्तद्दीर्घदंष्ट्राङ्कुरैः। चर्व्यन्ते कतिचिच्च पर्पणनिभास्तेन प्लवंगा रणे नीयन्ते यमसादनं कवलवल्ग्धाः सहस्रं शतम्॥२१॥
“Some monkeys remained lodged between his teeth, their heads crushed; the long points of his fangs cut and split the entire bodies of others. He chewed still others in battle as though they were tiny morsels, sending hundreds and thousands at a mouthful to the abode of Yama.
Passage 22
विदीर्णघोराननकन्दरोदरः परिस्रुतासृग्रसरञ्जिताधरः। सुदीर्घदंष्ट्रो भ्रुकुटीभयानको रणे स तिष्ठन् ददृशेऽन्तकोपमः॥२२॥
“With the cavern of his terrible mouth torn wide, his lips stained by streams of flowing blood, his fangs exceedingly long, and his brow dreadful, he stood upon the battlefield looking like Death himself.
Passage 23
कल्पान्तमेघौघकरालविग्रहो गर्जन् मुहुः शोणितबिन्दुरञ्जितः। धातुद्रवैः शैल इवातिचित्रितस्तस्थौ रणेऽसौ भुजवीर्यदर्पितः॥२३॥
“His form was dreadful as a mass of clouds at the end of an age. Roaring repeatedly and speckled with drops of blood, he stood proudly upon the battlefield like a mountain brightly streaked with mineral streams.
Passage 24
दर्पोद्धतान् कोटिसंख्यान् प्लवंगान् हस्ताभ्यां स प्रक्षिपन् वक्त्ररन्ध्रे। आरक्तोष्ठो वहमानेऽसृग्भिर्गर्जन् दृष्टः कालमेघोपमानः॥२४॥
“With his hands he threw proud monkeys by the millions into the opening of his mouth. His lips deep red, blood streaming as he roared, he looked like a cloud of doom.
Passage 25
महाशैलोत्तुङ्गकायेन तेन क्षयं नीताः कोटिसंख्याः प्लवंगाः। विलोक्यैतत्कदनं युद्धभूमौ प्राहोच्चकैर्लक्ष्मणो रामचन्द्रम्॥२५॥
“That giant, whose body towered like a great mountain, destroyed millions of monkeys. Seeing this slaughter on the battlefield, Lakṣmaṇa called out loudly to Rāmacandra.”
