Kumbhakarṇa assures Rāvaṇa that his warning did not arise from fear or disloyalty. He will obey his brother and fight, even though the sages taught him that Rāma is the eternal Supreme Person and that the dynasty's destruction has come through divine māyā. Rāvaṇa embraces him and sends him into battle. Kumbhakarṇa Reaffirms His Loyalty

Passage 1

कुम्भकर्ण उवाच— नाहं करोमि ते ज्येष्ठ मानसोत्साहभञ्जनम्। प्रबुद्धोऽहं रणे भ्रातर्मथितुं तव शात्रवान्॥१॥

Kumbhakarṇa said: “Elder brother, I do not intend to break your heart's resolve. I have awakened in order to crush your enemies in battle.

Passage 2

न वा योद्धुं ममालस्यं सम्प्रबुद्धस्य सम्प्रति। निर्दारयेयं धरणीं भञ्जयेयं गिरीनपि॥२॥

“Now that I am fully awake, I have no reluctance to fight. I could split the earth apart and shatter even the mountains.

Passage 3

त्वं मे प्राणप्रियो भ्राता न चाहं तेऽरिपक्षगः। न चापि मम वित्रासो वानरेभ्यः कदाचन॥३॥

“You are my brother, dearer to me than life, and I have not gone over to your enemies. Nor have I ever felt fear of the monkeys.

Passage 4

अमी हि मे सदा भक्ष्या एकैककवलोपमाः। भविष्यन्ति विनाऽयासं तृप्त्ये मम सहस्रशः॥४॥

“To me they are merely food, each one no more than a single mouthful. Thousands of them will effortlessly satisfy my hunger.

Passage 5

यथा तवान्ये सुभटा राक्षसाः कोटिशो रणे। अयं तथाहमप्येकः कृपां कुरु सदा मयि॥५॥

“Just as countless other excellent rākṣasa warriors fight for you, so I too am one of them. Continue to show me your favor.

Passage 6

अनुजे स्वस्य नितरामाज्ञापालनतत्परे। नाहं विभीषणो ज्ञेयो यः शत्रुमधितिष्ठति॥६॥

“I am your younger brother, wholly devoted to carrying out your command. Do not take me for Vibhīṣaṇa, who has joined the enemy.

Passage 7

धिक् तं कातरचित्तत्वाद्वीर्येण परिवर्जितम्। येषां मनः सदा धीरं सम्पत्सु च विपत्सु च॥७॥

“Shame upon the fainthearted man bereft of valor. Those whose minds remain steadfast in prosperity and adversity—

Passage 8

एकरूपं त एवाशु जयन्ति लोकमीप्सितम्। अव्यवस्थितचित्तास्तु पतन्त्युभयलोकतः॥८॥

“—and unchanged in either condition swiftly win the world they desire, whereas the irresolute fall away from both worlds.

Passage 9

अपि येऽङ्गीकृतं सन्तः शुभं वा यदि वाशुभम्। न त्यजन्त्यात्मनो धैर्यं तेषां लोकः सनातनः॥९॥

“Whatever the good have accepted, whether favorable or unfavorable, they do not abandon their own courage; the eternal realm is theirs.

Passage 10

जय एव सदास्माकं त्वत्पक्षमधितिष्ठताम्। रणेऽपि त्यक्तप्राणानामुभौ लोकौ यशोज्ज्वलौ॥१०॥

“Victory is always ours while we stand upon your side. Even if we surrender our lives in battle, both worlds will shine with our fame.

Passage 11

अथो जयेम यच्छत्रून् पुरःस्थानाततायिनः। तदापि नः सदा क्षेममुभौ लोकौ यशोज्ज्वलौ॥११॥

“And if we defeat the murderous enemies standing before us, lasting welfare will be ours and both worlds will shine with our fame.

Passage 12

अथास्मिन् यदि विपुलकार्यकाल उपस्थिते। भिद्येम यदि वाज्ञां ते नानुतिष्ठाम तर्हि नः॥१२॥

“But if, when this hour of immense action has arrived, we should break ranks or fail to carry out your command—

अयं चैवापरो लोक उभावपि गतौ द्रुतम्। जनुश्चाकीर्तिमलिनं जातमेव जुगुप्सितम्॥१३॥

“—both this world and the next would quickly be lost to us, and our very birth, stained by infamy, would become contemptible.

नीतियुक्तं तु ते पूर्वं मया किंचिन्निवेदितम्। तद्भवान् यदि नागृह्णात् किं तर्हि क्रियतां मया॥१४॥

“Earlier I offered you a little counsel grounded in sound policy. If you do not accept it, what more can I do?

Passage 15

यदभावि न तद्भावि भावि चेन्न तदन्यथा। इति मत्वा स्थितोऽस्म्येष त्वदाज्ञातत्परो मुहुः॥१५॥

“What is not destined will not occur, and what is destined cannot be otherwise. Thinking thus, I stand here wholly intent upon your command.

Passage 16

श्रुतं ह्येतन्मया पूर्वं प्राज्ञेभ्यो दशानन। सर्वज्ञेभ्यो मुनीन्द्रेभ्यो न भावि च तदन्यथा॥१६॥

“Ten-faced king, I heard this long ago from wise and all-knowing lords among sages: what is destined cannot be otherwise.

Passage 17

इदमेव निमित्तं नो नाशस्याकलितं मया। पुरा सर्वज्ञकल्पेभ्यो महर्षिभ्यो यथातथम्॥१७॥

“Long ago those great seers, nearly omniscient, revealed things exactly as they are, and I learned that this very event would be the cause of our destruction. Kumbhakarṇa Recognizes Rāma

कोऽन्यथा नाशयेदस्मान् कृतान्तस्यापि भीषकान्। दर्पोत्पाटिततद्वाहमहिषोग्रविषाणकान्॥१८॥

“Who else could destroy us, who terrify even Death and in our pride have torn out the terrible horns of the buffalo that bears him?

Passage 19

यद्येवं न निमित्तं स्यात्तदार्यं भुवनत्रये। कस्त्वां नाशयितुं शक्तो यक्षो रक्षोऽमरो नरः॥१९॥

“Noble brother, if this were not the ordained cause, what yakṣa, rākṣasa, god, or human in the three worlds could destroy you?

Passage 20

अपि नाम परः साक्षात् पुरुषोऽयं सनातनः। आद्यन्तमध्यशून्यश्च प्राप्तस्ते नगरान्तिकम्॥२०॥

“This is none other than the eternal Supreme Person himself, without beginning, middle, or end, who has now reached the outskirts of your city.

रामो रघुपतिः श्रीमान् न यत्तत्त्वं विजानते। ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवा देवाः कोऽन्यः शक्नोतु वेदितुम्॥२१॥

“He is glorious Rāma, lord of the Raghus, whose true nature Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva do not comprehend. Who else could possibly know it?

Passage 22

अहं जानामि पूर्वेभ्यो मुनिभ्यः श्रुततद्गुणः। भवान् परं न जानाति काले भाग्यविपर्ययात्॥२२॥

“I know him because I heard his qualities from the sages of old. But you do not recognize the Supreme, for at this fated hour your fortune has turned.

Passage 23

जानाम्यहं तथाप्यस्मिन् द्वेष्यबुद्धिः सदैव मे। इति तस्यैव मायेयं यथा सम्मोहितं जगत्॥२३॥

“Although I know him, my mind still remains hostile toward him. Such is his own māyā, by which the world is deluded.

Passage 24

त्यक्त्वा लोकं सुप्रकाशं सुखं यत्र निरन्तरम्। लीयामहे च तमसि बुद्धिमोहो न ईदृशः॥२४॥

“Abandoning the radiant realm where happiness is unending, we plunge into darkness. No delusion of the intellect could be greater than this.

Passage 25

स्वर्गापवर्गलोकेशः साक्षादेष परः पुमान्। ते द्विष्मो मनसा रामं स्वार्थं मूढा अहो वयम्॥२५॥

“He is directly the Supreme Person, lord of heaven and liberation; yet, deluded by self-interest, alas, we hate Rāma in our hearts. Rāvaṇa Embraces and Dispatches Kumbhakarṇa

Passage 26

इत्याकर्ण्यास्य वाक्यं समितिः कृतमतेः कुम्भकर्णस्य भूयः, प्रेम्णा युक्तो दशास्यः शिरसि भृशमुपाघ्राय चालिङ्ग्य दोर्भ्याम्। पुंसु भ्रान्तिं प्रदर्श्य क्षपितमुनिवचो मानईशं विनिन्द्य, प्रोच्याहोभिश्चतुर्भिर्विरतिमथ युधे प्राहिणोत्तं महोग्रम्॥२६॥

“Hearing once more the words of Kumbhakarṇa, whose mind was set upon battle, the ten-faced king was filled with affection. He repeatedly smelled his brother's head and embraced him with both arms. Displaying the delusion that afflicts embodied beings, he dismissed the sages' teaching, reproached the honorable lord, spoke of a respite of four days, and then sent that immensely terrible warrior into battle.”
