Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— स तद्वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य कृतयत्नो दशाननः। उवाच तं क्षुधार्तं कुम्भकर्णं निजानुजम्॥१॥
Brahmā said: “Hearing Kumbhakarṇa's words, ten-headed Rāvaṇa gathered himself and addressed his younger brother, who was tormented by hunger.
Passage 2
चतुर्भिर्दिवसैर्वीर यत्नेन त्वं प्रबोधितः। भक्षयैतान् भोज्यभारान् नानान्नव्यञ्जनान्वितान्॥२॥
“‘Hero, we awakened you with great effort over four days. Eat these masses of food accompanied by many grains and delicacies.
Passage 3
पश्य मांसौघकूटानि क्लृप्तानि तव तृप्तये। अन्नराशीनिमान् पश्य पृथक् सम्यग्रसान्वितान्॥३॥
“‘See the peaks of piled meat prepared to satisfy you, and these separate heaps of grain, each furnished with abundant flavors.
Passage 4
भक्ष्यचोष्यान् लेह्यपेयान् पश्य स्वादूंश्चतुर्विधान्। इह नानाविधा भक्ष्याः शष्कुलीरोटिकादयः॥४॥
“‘Behold the four delicious kinds of food—to chew, suck, lick, and drink. Here are many foods such as śaṣkulī pastries and flatbreads.
Passage 5
रसा नानाविधाश्चापि दधि दुग्धं सुरामधु। तैर्भृताः कूपिका वाप्यः सरस्योऽथापि दीर्घिकाः॥५॥
“‘There are many juices and broths, curd, milk, liquor, and honey. Wells, ponds, lakes, and long pools are filled with them.
Passage 6
सुखेन भक्षय भ्रातस्त्वमिमां भोज्यसंविधाम्। आपीय मदिरां घोरां मांसभारानशेषय॥६॥
“‘Brother, comfortably consume this whole arrangement of food. Drink the potent liquor and leave no trace of the masses of meat.
Passage 7
पिब रक्तमयान् कुण्डानि क्षुद्रमद्यमयांस्तथा। सर्वांश्च भोज्यसम्भारान् भुङ्क्ष्व भूरिमदान्वितः॥७॥
“‘Drink the vats filled with blood and those filled with lighter liquors. Filled with mighty exhilaration, consume every store of food.
Passage 8
इत्थं विनीय त्वं वीर क्षुधां सुचिरसम्भवाम्। जहि शत्रून् रणे वीर स्वानां प्रमुदमावहन्॥८॥
“‘Hero, once you have removed the hunger born of your long sleep, go slay our enemies in battle and bring joy to your own people.
Passage 9
रणाङ्गणं त्वयि गते नूनं भक्ष्याश्च वानराः। [तापसावपि तौ मर्त्यौ चूर्णनीयौ मदाज्ञया।] यो रामलक्ष्मणावेताविति लोके श्रुतिं गतौ॥९॥
“‘When you enter the battlefield, the monkeys will surely become your food. [At my command, those two mortal ascetics must also be crushed]—the pair known throughout the world as Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
Passage 10
न जानाति भवान् वीर संजातौ स्वपिति त्वयि। ततश्च कुम्भकर्णोऽसौ निर्दिष्टास्तेन ताः किल॥१०॥
“‘You do not know of them, hero, for they arose while you slept.’ Kumbhakarṇa then turned to all the things Rāvaṇa had indicated— Kumbhakarṇa Consumes Everything
Passage 11
अन्नव्यञ्जनमांसादिसंविधाः सकला अपि। बभक्ष क्षुधायान्तःस्थपावकज्वालमालया॥११॥
“—and, driven by the garland of flames burning within his hunger, devoured every preparation of grain, delicacies, meat, and more.
Passage 12
अचर्वयत मांसास्थीन्यामांसास्थीनि सर्वतः। सस्वदे च सुपक्वानि मांसानि विविधान्यपि॥१२॥
“On every side he chewed meat and bones, raw meat and bones, and savored the many varieties of well-cooked flesh.
Passage 13
अन्नकूटांश्चरवादोच्चैर्भूरिव्यञ्जनसंयुतान्। भर्जितानि च धान्यानि बहूनि समचर्वयत्। पीत्वा कादम्बरीं रस्यां मत्तो राक्षससत्तमः॥१३॥
“He noisily consumed mountains of grain furnished with countless side dishes and great quantities of roasted cereals. Drinking the delicious kādambarī liquor, the foremost rākṣasa became intoxicated.
Passage 14
सर्वं निपातयामास यत्किञ्चिदिह कल्पितम्। भक्ष्यलेह्यादि विविधं रावणेन प्रयत्नतः॥१४॥
“He made everything that Rāvaṇa had carefully arranged disappear—every variety of chewable, lickable, and other food.
Passage 15
पपौ रसभृतान् कूपान् सरसीर्वापिकास्तथा। क्रमेण विपुलाहार आदायादाय पाणिना॥१५॥
“Taking one portion after another in his hands, the prodigious eater drank the wells, lakes, and ponds filled with flavorful liquids.
Passage 16
भुक्त्वा निरवशेषं तत्सर्वमाहारसंचयम्। जगर्ज मदिरायत्तः किञ्चित्तृप्तिमुपागतः॥१६॥
“Having eaten that entire accumulation without remainder and attained a little satisfaction, he roared under the liquor's influence.
Passage 17
तस्य गर्जारवो घोरो रोदसी पर्यघोषयत्। तं श्रुत्वा कपयस्त्रस्ता मुदिताश्चापि राक्षसाः॥१७॥
“His terrible roar resounded through heaven and earth. Hearing it, the monkeys were terrified and the rākṣasas rejoiced. Kumbhakarṇa Asks Why Laṅkā Is at War
Passage 18
भुक्त्वा सोऽथ स्वस्थमनाः पर्यपृच्छत रावणम्। क एष ते रणोद्योगः किमर्थं वा दशानन॥१८॥
“After eating, his mind now settled, Kumbhakarṇa asked Rāvaṇa, ‘Ten-headed king, what is this preparation for war, and why has it arisen?
Passage 19
केन वा सह जातस्ते विरोधो भुवनेष्वलम्। किमर्थं रक्षसां यूथान् रणे क्षपयसि स्वयम्॥१९॥
“‘With whom in all the worlds has such enmity arisen for you? Why are you personally expending hosts of rākṣasas in battle?
Passage 20
आज्ञावशंवदास्तेऽमी निपतन्ति पतङ्गवत्। समरेषु महावेगा रक्षोवीरास्तवोद्धटाः॥२०॥
“‘Bound to obey your command, your immensely powerful and impetuous rākṣasa heroes fall in battle like moths into flame.’
Passage 21
इति पृष्टः प्रबुद्धेन कुम्भकर्णेन रावणः। उवाच तं यथावृत्तं जानकीहरणादिकम्॥२१॥
“Questioned in this way by the awakened Kumbhakarṇa, Rāvaṇa told him everything that had occurred, beginning with the abduction of Jānakī.
Passage 22
ततश्च रामगमनं सेतुबन्धपुरःसरम्। कारणं सर्वमेवैतत्तन युद्धस्य सोऽवदत्॥२२॥
“He described Rāma's subsequent arrival, preceded by the building of the bridge, and recounted the entire cause of the war.
Passage 23
इत्थं प्रबोध्य लङ्केशः कुम्भकर्णं महाजवम्। जगाम स्वगृहं तूर्णं यत्र मन्दोदरी स्थिता॥२३॥
“Having thus awakened swift and mighty Kumbhakarṇa, the king of Laṅkā quickly returned to his own palace where Mandodarī remained.
Passage 24
तमन्तःपुरस्थाः स्त्रियः कुम्भकर्णप्रबोधोत्सवं ज्ञापन्त्यः सहर्षाः। जयाशंसना हत्तदृष्टिप्रसादं वचोगुम्फनैर्मोदयामासुरुच्चैः॥२४॥
“The women of the inner palace joyfully announced the festival of Kumbhakarṇa's awakening. Wishing Rāvaṇa victory, they greatly delighted him with gracious glances and artfully woven words.”
