Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— आरभ्य पञ्चमीं कृत्स्नां चतुर्भिर्दिवसैस्ततः। बोधितस्तेन निद्राणः कुम्भकर्णो निजानुजः॥१॥
Brahmā said: “Beginning with the fifth day, four entire days were then spent rousing Rāvaṇa's sleeping younger brother Kumbhakarṇa.
Passage 2
तावद्युद्धावहारोऽभूद्रामरावणसेनयोः। यावत्प्रबोधितः कृच्छ्रात्कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः॥२॥
“The armies of Rāma and Rāvaṇa suspended battle for as long as it took to awaken mighty Kumbhakarṇa with great difficulty.
Passage 3
विद्रावितस्तु रामेण संग्रामाद्दशकन्धरः। व्रीडाकलङ्कितमुख इदमाह स्वसेवकान्॥३॥
“Driven from the battle by Rāma, the ten-necked king spoke to his servants with a face stained by shame.
Passage 4
अरे रे राक्षसाः कोऽयं कालस्येव विपर्ययः। उपस्थितो ममेदानीं यन्मर्त्योऽपि स तापसः॥४॥
“‘Rākṣasas! What reversal of fate has now befallen me, when that mere mortal ascetic has risen against me?
Passage 5
कपिसेनापरीवारो भ्रात्रैकेन द्वितीयवान्। धनुर्मात्रसहायश्च हिनस्तीहैव राक्षसान्॥५॥
“‘Surrounded only by a monkey army, accompanied by one brother, and aided by nothing but a bow, he is slaughtering the rākṣasas here.
Passage 6
धिङ्मे बलं च वीर्यं च प्रतापोन्नतिमेव च। कपिभिर्वेष्टिता यस्य त्रैलोक्यजयितः पुरी॥६॥
“‘Shame upon my strength, my valor, and the summit of my majesty, when the city of one who conquered the three worlds is encircled by monkeys!
Passage 7
किमिदानीं च कर्तव्यं मम लब्धजयोन्नतेः। त्रैलोक्येऽप्येकवीरस्य क नु सम्भाव्यते रिपुः॥७॥
“‘What can I, exalted by so many victories, now do? Who in all the three worlds could have been imagined an enemy for a peerless hero like me?
Passage 8
सोऽपि मर्त्यः स चाप्येकः सोऽपि तापसवेशभृत्। सोऽप्यत्रैव स्थितो हन्ति पुरीपरिसरे मम॥८॥
“‘Yet he is mortal, alone, and dressed as an ascetic—and still he stands here killing my forces at the very edge of my city.
Passage 9
रक्षोयूथपतीन् वीरानसंख्यातान् दिने दिने। हन्ति स्वयं घातयति रक्षोवीरान् स मामकान्॥९॥
“‘Day after day he personally kills innumerable heroic rākṣasa commanders and causes my other warriors to be killed.
Passage 10
इति चिन्तापरं नित्यं निद्रा संत्यज्य मां गता। अहो शेते कुम्भकर्ण इदानीमपि निद्रया॥१०॥
“‘Sleep has entirely abandoned me as I remain consumed by these thoughts, yet Kumbhakarṇa still lies asleep even now!
Passage 11
जितः स्त्रिया चतुरया कामीव स ममानुजः। शेते विमूढहृदयो बाह्यं वेद न चान्तरम्॥११॥
“‘My younger brother has been conquered by cunning Sleep as a lustful man is conquered by a clever woman. His heart stupefied, he lies unaware of anything within or without.
Passage 12
बोधनीयो द्रुतं यत्नैर्यथा जागर्ति सोऽधुना। क्षयं नीताः किलानेन तापसेन निशाचराः॥१२॥
“‘He must be roused at once by every possible effort. This ascetic has indeed brought the night-roamers to destruction.
Passage 13
तानेष दृष्ट्वा सपदि रुषाविष्टो भविष्यति। भक्षयिष्यति चाप्येतौ भ्रातरौ मम विद्विषौ॥१३॥
“‘When Kumbhakarṇa sees their ruin, rage will instantly possess him, and he will devour both brothers who are my enemies.
Passage 14
अतः प्रबोध्यतां भृत्याः कुम्भकर्णो ममानुजः। सुस्निग्धश्च मयि प्रेम्णा हितं मेऽद्य करिष्यति॥१४॥
“‘Therefore, servants, awaken my younger brother Kumbhakarṇa. Deeply attached to me by love, he will secure my welfare today.
Passage 15
धिग्धिग्विभीषणसमं भ्रातृरूपं विरोधिनम्। यस्त्यजेत्संकटे प्राप्ते सम्पत्सु सह भुक्तवान्॥१५॥
“‘Shame, shame upon an enemy disguised as a brother like Vibhīṣaṇa—one who shared prosperity with us, yet abandoned us when danger came!
Passage 16
नेदृशः कुम्भकर्णोऽस्ति भ्राता मेऽतिप्रियो हि सः। सुप्तः किल चिरेणासौ व्यत्ययाद्वीरचतुर्युगीः॥१६॥
“‘Kumbhakarṇa is not like him; that brother is exceedingly dear to me. Through a strange reversal, the hero has indeed lain asleep for a very long span.
Passage 17
बोधनावसरे चास्मिन् बोधनीयः स राक्षसाः। किं त्वस्य चिरसुप्तस्य क्षुधा बह्वी भविष्यति॥१७॥
“‘At this moment he must be awakened, rākṣasas. But after sleeping so long, his hunger will be immense. A Colossal Meal Must Come First
Passage 18
अतो भोजनसामग्री पूर्वं तस्य विधीयताम्। कार्या नानाविधैर्मांसै राशयः पर्वतोपमाः॥१८॥
“‘Therefore first prepare everything required for his meal. Make mountain-like heaps from many kinds of meat.
Passage 19
क्रियन्तां रुधिरौघैश्च कासारास्तस्य तुष्टये। कार्या नानाविधैरन्नैरामैः पक्वैश्च राशयः॥१९॥
“‘For his satisfaction, form pools from streams of blood and heap up every kind of raw and cooked food.
Passage 20
पूर्यन्तां वापिकाः कूपाः सरस्यो विविधै रसैः। घृतैरिक्षुरसैः प्राज्यैर्माक्षिकैर्मधुभिस्तथा॥२०॥
“‘Fill ponds, wells, and lakes with many liquids: abundant ghee, sugarcane juice, bee-honey, and other honeys.
Passage 21
दधिदुग्धसुराद्यैश्च मांसाक्तैश्च तथा रसैः। कुण्डानि परिपूर्यन्तां तस्य वीरस्य तुष्टये॥२१॥
“‘For that hero's satisfaction, fill great vessels to the brim with curd, milk, liquors, and rich meat-infused broths.
Passage 22
नानाविधा चोत्कटा च तस्य कादम्बरी सुरा। प्रवाह्यतां नदीरूपा यां पीत्वा स सुखी भवेत्॥२२॥
“‘Let many varieties of his exceptionally potent kādambarī liquor flow like a river, so that drinking it will bring him pleasure.
Passage 23
दृष्ट्वा स तत्क्षणादेतद्बालभोगं करिष्यति। ततो माध्याह्निकीं वेलां प्राप्यान्यद्भोक्ष्यते बहु॥२३॥
“‘The moment he sees all this, he will take it as his morning meal; then, when midday arrives, he will eat a great deal more.
Passage 24
इदं सद्यो हि मद्वाक्यात्पूर्वमेव विधीयताम्। अन्यथा सोऽतिक्षुधितश्चिरेण परिनिद्रितः॥२४॥
“‘At my command all this must be arranged beforehand and without delay. Otherwise, after his prolonged sleep, he will awaken ravenously hungry—
Passage 25
अदृष्टभक्ष्यसम्भारः क्षुब्धचित्तो भविष्यति। भक्षणं हि वृतं तेन त्रैलोक्यस्य विधेः पुरा॥२५॥
“‘—and become violently agitated if he sees no mass of food, for at the time of Brahmā's boon he originally chose to devour the three worlds. How Sarasvatī Changed the Boon
Passage 26
ततो विरञ्चिर्भगवांश्चिन्तयाह सरस्वतीम्। वरकालेऽस्य वदनं त्वं देवि प्रविश ध्रुवम्॥२६॥
“‘The blessed creator Brahmā then reflected and said to Sarasvatī, “Goddess, when the boon is granted, you must enter his mouth.
Passage 27
नो चेन्मत्तो लब्धवरस्त्रैलोक्यं भक्षयेदयम्। सरस्वती विधेर्वाक्याद्विविशास्य मुखं तदा॥२७॥
“‘“Otherwise, once he receives a boon from me, he will devour the three worlds.” At Brahmā's word Sarasvatī entered Kumbhakarṇa's mouth.
Passage 28
भक्षयिष्यामीति न स स्वप्स्यामीत्यवृणोद्विधेः। तदारभ्य स्वपित्येष मत्तोऽप्यधिकविक्रमः॥२८॥
“‘Thus he did not say, “I shall devour,” but instead chose from Brahmā, “I shall sleep.” From that time this hero, whose prowess even exceeds my own, has slept.’
Passage 29
इति रक्षसामधिपतेर्गिरा ततो रजनीचरा विविधभोज्यसंविधाः। प्रविधाय पूर्वममुना यथोदिताः प्रणताः पुरोऽस्य निखिलं न्यवेदयन्॥२९॥
“At the rākṣasa king's command, the night-roamers prepared the many kinds of food beforehand exactly as he had ordered. Bowing before him, they reported that everything was ready.”
