Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— आजुहाव हनूमन्तं युद्धे धूम्राक्षराक्षसः। अरे रे कपिपोत त्वं मदेनोदीर्णमानसः॥१॥
Brahmā said: “The rākṣasa Dhūmrākṣa challenged Hanumān in battle: ‘You wretched monkey, your mind is swollen with pride!
Passage 2
उत्प्लुत्योत्प्लुत्य समरे कदर्थयसि राक्षसान्। न मे प्रतिबलो योद्धुं लघीयान् विक्रमोद्यतः॥२॥
“‘Leaping repeatedly through battle, you torment the rākṣasas. A puny creature displaying such prowess is no worthy opponent for me.
Passage 3
तथापि स्वामिना तेन लङ्केशेन महौजसा। योद्धुं नियुक्तो लघुभिर्भवद्भिः कपिसैनिकैः॥३॥
“‘Nevertheless, mighty Laṅkā's lord has assigned me to fight insignificant monkey soldiers such as you.
Passage 4
सोऽहं त्वाद्य हनिष्यामि दर्पोद्धतमनारतम्। उत्प्लुवन्तं रणभुवि भुजङ्ग इव दर्दुरम्॥४॥
“‘Therefore I shall kill you today as you leap ceaselessly and arrogantly over the battlefield, like a serpent killing a frog.
Passage 5
अस्थाने संनियुक्ताः स्मो वयं वीरा निशाचराः। किं कुर्मः सम्प्रति कपे भर्तुराज्ञा गरीयसी॥५॥
“‘We heroic night-roamers have been assigned to an unworthy task. Yet what can we do, monkey? Our master's command is weighty.
Passage 6
वयं जयेम युष्मांश्चेत् का नः श्लाघा महीयसाम्। यैः समुत्पाटिता दन्ताः क्रोधाद्दिग्दन्तिनामपि॥६॥
“‘If we defeat you, what praise can great warriors like us gain, when in anger we have uprooted even the tusks of the elephants guarding the directions?
Passage 7
पराजीयेमहि पुनर्युष्माभिर्लघुमात्रकैः। तदा त्वतीव नो हानिर्वीर्यस्य यशसस्तथा॥७॥
“‘But if puny creatures like you defeat us, our prowess and fame will suffer immense injury.
Passage 8
तथाप्यागच्छ युद्धाय त्वयाहं भर्तुराज्ञया। प्रसह्य च नयामि त्वामचिराद्यमशासनम्॥८॥
“‘Nevertheless, come fight. By my master's command I shall overpower you and soon take you to Yama's realm.’ Hanumān Kills Dhūmrākṣa
Passage 9
इत्युदीर्य स धावित्वा प्रजहारासिना दृढम्। हनूमन्तं हृदि रणे वज्रेणेव गिरिं वृषा॥९॥
“Saying this, Dhūmrākṣa charged and struck Hanumān firmly in the chest with his sword, like Indra striking a mountain with the thunderbolt.
Passage 10
पुष्पप्रहारवच्चास्य स प्रहारोऽतिदारुणः। अभवद्राक्षसकरप्रेरितासिसमुद्भवः॥१०॥
“Yet that exceedingly violent sword-blow delivered by the rākṣasa's hand felt to Hanumān like the touch of a flower.
Passage 11
ततश्च चुक्षुभे रोषाद्धूम्राक्षो नाम राक्षसः। पुनरुत्तोल्य तं खड्गं प्रहर्तुं तमधावत॥११॥
“Dhūmrākṣa then shook with rage, raised the sword again, and rushed to strike him.
Passage 12
स च पाणितलोत्क्षेपसम्भवाद् दृढघाततः। तमसिं पातयामास हनूमान् रक्षसः करात्॥१२॥
“With a firm blow produced by an upward sweep of his palm, Hanumān knocked the sword from the rākṣasa's hand.
Passage 13
पपात वज्रवन्मेघादवनीं कम्पयन्नसिः। राक्षसः पतिते खड्गे लज्जमानमना अभूत्॥१३॥
“The sword fell like a thunderbolt from a cloud and shook the earth. When it fell, shame entered the rākṣasa's mind.
Passage 14
ततस्त्रिशूलमादाय तं प्रहर्तुमधावत। बलादाच्छिद्य तद्धस्ताद्धनुमान् दूरमक्षिपत्॥१४॥
“Dhūmrākṣa took up a trident and charged to strike him, but Hanumān forcibly tore it from his hand and hurled it far away.
Passage 15
ततः स क्रोधताम्राक्षो मुष्टिमुद्यम्य मारुतिम्। वक्षसि प्रजहारोच्चैर्जगर्ज च यथोदरः॥१५॥
“His eyes red with anger, the rākṣasa raised his fist, struck the son of the Wind hard in the chest, and roared deeply.
Passage 16
अभून्मुष्टिप्रहारोत्थो वज्रनिर्घोषदारुणः। त्रुट्यन्महीधरशिखरस्येवातिविषमो रवः॥१६॥
“The fist-blow produced a dreadful thunderbolt-like crash, an immensely harsh sound like a mountain peak splitting apart.
Passage 17
न विव्यथे च हनुमान् स तेनाण्वपि मुष्टिना। पुनरुद्यम्य दोर्दण्डं धूम्राक्षो रोषसंयुतः॥१७॥
“Hanumān was not troubled in the slightest by that fist. Filled with rage, Dhūmrākṣa raised his powerful arm again.
Passage 18
यावत्तं प्रहरेदुच्चैर्वज्रतुल्येन मुष्टिना। तावत्स्वयं मरुत्सूनुर्मुष्टिमाबध्य सत्वरम्॥१८॥
“Before he could strike Hanumān forcefully with his thunderbolt-like fist, the son of the Wind swiftly clenched his own fist—
Passage 19
प्रजहारास्य शिरसि गिरिकूटसमुन्नते। तेनास्य शतधा शीर्ष छिन्नभिन्नमिवाभवत्॥१९॥
“—and struck the rākṣasa's head, which rose like a mountain summit. That blow shattered his skull into a hundred pieces.
Passage 20
मुष्टिप्रहारविध्वस्तशिरा रुधिरमुद्वमन्। स पपात महीपृष्ठे धूम्राक्षो नाम राक्षसः॥२०॥
“His head destroyed by the fist-blow and blood pouring forth, the rākṣasa Dhūmrākṣa fell upon the earth.
Passage 21
चालयन्नवनीं कृत्स्नां साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम्। तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमौ राक्षसास्तस्य पृष्ठगाः॥२१॥
“His fall shook the entire earth with its oceans, islands, and mountains. When he struck the ground, the rākṣasas who followed him—
Passage 22
शस्त्राण्यादाय शतशो हनूमन्तमभिद्रुताः। तानेष बलवान् वीरो मरुत्पुत्रो रणे स्थिरः॥२२॥
“—seized weapons and charged Hanumān by the hundreds. The powerful, steadfast son of the Wind met them in battle—
Passage 23
कांश्चिन्मुष्टिप्रहारेण कांश्चित्पादप्रहारतः। कांश्चित्परस्परशिरोघट्टनस्फोटनक्रमात्॥२३॥
“—killing some with fist-blows, some with kicks, and others by smashing their heads against one another;
Passage 24
कांश्चिद्विपोथनैः पद्भ्यां कांश्चिदाक्रमणेन च। कांश्चित्पदा समाक्रम्य गाढं तच्चरणौ बली॥२४॥
“he crushed some beneath his feet and trampled others; firmly pinning some under one foot, the mighty hero—
Passage 25
हस्तेन मत्तगजवद्द्विधा कृत्वा व्यपाटयत्। निनाय कालनगरीं राक्षसानखिलानपि॥२५॥
“—tore them in two with his hands as though rending furious elephants. He sent every rākṣasa to the city of Death. Cakra and His Forces Fall
Passage 26
अथ तेन त्रयोदश्यां चक्रनामा निशाचरः। योद्धुं बाहुबलोत्कर्षो रणाङ्गणमुपाययौ॥२६॥
“Then, on the thirteenth day, a night-roamer named Cakra, proud of his arm-strength, entered the battlefield to fight Hanumān.
Passage 27
ध्रुवं तमप्येष बली हनूमांश्चिरेण वीरं युधि योधयित्वा। एकं समाक्रम्य पदा द्वितीयं विपाटयामास पदं कराभ्याम्॥२७॥
“After fighting that hero for some time, mighty Hanumān pinned one of Cakra's feet beneath his own and tore the other apart with both hands.
Passage 28
तत्पृष्ठगा ये च मदाभिनद्धाः पतङ्गवत्तं प्रसभं समीयुः। तानप्यसौ मल्ल इवातिवीर्यो निपातयामास विपोथ्य भूमौ॥२८॥
“Those pride-bound followers behind Cakra rushed forcefully upon Hanumān like moths. The immensely heroic monkey struck them down and crushed them upon the earth like a wrestler.
Passage 29
ये शस्त्रहस्तास्तमभिप्रयाता रणाङ्गणे रात्रिचराः सहस्रम्। तानेष कृत्वा प्रसभं विशस्त्रान्निपातयामास चपेटपातैः॥२९॥
“A thousand armed night-roamers advanced upon him on the battlefield. Hanumān forcibly disarmed them and felled them with slaps.”
