Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— हृतदर्पो मेघनादो जगाम दशमीदिने। वासस्थानमगाद्रामो मुदितो वानरैः सह॥१॥
Brahmā said: “Meghanāda departed with his pride broken on the tenth day, and Rāma joyfully returned to camp with the monkeys.
Passage 2
कुर्वन् किलकिलारावं शत्रूणां हृद्विभेदनम्। आस्फोटयंश्च दोर्दण्डान् सोत्साहमुखपङ्कजः॥२॥
“Their lotus faces bright with enthusiasm, they made piercing cries that split their enemies' hearts and struck their mighty arms.
Passage 3
अग्रतः कपिसैन्यस्य हनुमान् सुमहाबलः। सुग्रीवश्च नलो नीलस्तथा वालिसुतो बली॥३॥
“Mighty Hanumān marched at the front of the monkey army with Sugrīva, Nala, Nīla, and powerful Vāli's son.
Passage 4
आजग्मुः कपयः सर्वे स्वस्वावासस्थलीं प्रति। निर्मुक्तकवचो राम उपसंहृतकार्मुकः॥४॥
“All the monkeys returned to their respective camps, while Rāma removed his armor and put away his bow.
Passage 5
स्नात्वा नित्यक्रियां कृत्वा देवर्षिपितृतर्पणम्। विधाय श्रद्धया युक्तो धर्मसीमाभिरक्षकः॥५॥
“The guardian of dharma's bounds bathed, performed his daily rites, and faithfully offered libations to gods, sages, and ancestors.
Passage 6
ददौ दानानि विप्रेभ्यो गोभूमिकनकादिकम्। इत्थं युद्धावहारोऽभूदेकादश्यां द्वयोरपि॥६॥
“He gave brāhmaṇas gifts of cows, land, gold, and more. Thus both armies suspended battle on Ekādaśī.
Passage 7
सर्वे हरेर्व्रतं चक्रुर्वैष्णवाः कपिसैनिकाः। जाम्बवांश्चापि धर्मात्मा भक्तिमांश्च विभीषणः॥७॥
“All the Vaiṣṇava monkey soldiers observed Hari's vow, as did righteous Jāmbavān and devoted Vibhīṣaṇa.
Passage 8
सीतारामचन्द्रौ देवौ सम्पूज्य सुसमाहिताः। तुलसीं चापि सम्पूज्य तत्पत्रैश्च सीतापतिम्॥८॥
“With deep concentration they worshiped the divine Sītā and Rāmacandra, worshiped Tulasī, and honored Sītā's lord with her leaves.
Passage 9
शङ्खघण्टादिनिर्घोषैरारात्रिकपुरःसरम्। कथयन्तो रामकथां जन्मकर्मादि निर्मलम्॥९॥
“Amid the sounds of conches, bells, and other instruments, they performed ārati and recounted the pure story of Rāma's birth and deeds.
Passage 10
रात्रौ जागरणं चक्रुः समवेताः परस्परम्। तदोपसृत्य सुग्रीवो रामं त्रिभुवनेश्वरम्॥१०॥
“Gathering together, they kept vigil through the night. Sugrīva then approached Rāma, lord of the three worlds— One Command for Every Army

इदमूचे विनीतात्मा कपीनां शृण्वतां सुधीः। रघुदेव सुराराध्यचरणद्वन्द्वपादुक॥११॥
“—and, humble and wise, spoke while the monkeys listened: ‘Divine Raghava, whose two feet are worshiped by the gods,
Passage 12
अमीषां स्वस्वसैन्येषु पृथगाज्ञारवं जनाः। घोषयन्ति जयादौ वा शपथे वा नयादिषु॥१२॥
“‘the people of these various forces separately proclaim their commanders' orders at victory cries, oaths, policy declarations, and other occasions.
Passage 13
नैतद्युक्तं जगन्नाथ भवानेको यदीश्वरः। सर्वेषामपि सैन्यानां तदेते सर्वदा जनाः॥१३॥
“‘This is not proper, lord of the universe, since you alone are sovereign over every army. Therefore these people should always—
Passage 14
तवाज्ञां घोषयन्त्वद्धा दण्ड्या इतरथा यदि। शृण्वन्त्वेतदखिलानाथ यूथपालाः समन्ततः॥१४॥
“‘—proclaim your command alone, and be punished if they do otherwise. Lord of all, let every commander hear this.
Passage 15
वदन्त्वेते जनान् स्वान् स्वान् हितमेतदतः परम्। सुग्रीवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा न्याय्यमेतन्मनोहरम्॥१५॥
“‘Let them tell their respective people this beneficial rule from now on.’ Hearing Sugrīva's just and pleasing words—
Passage 16
सर्वेऽपि कपिसामन्ताः साधु साध्वित्यपूजयन्। अनुमत्य तथोवाच राक्षसेन्द्रो विभीषणः॥१६॥
“—all the monkey chiefs praised them, saying, ‘Excellent! Excellent!’ Giving his assent, the rākṣasa king Vibhīṣaṇa said:

साधूक्तं कपिशार्दूल सर्वेषां नो हितावहम्। कस्याज्ञा घोष्यतां सैन्ये रघुनाथं प्रभुं विना॥१७॥
“‘Tiger among monkeys, you have spoken well for the good of us all. Whose command should the army proclaim except that of Lord Raghunātha?
Passage 18
सर्वे पृथक् पृथगिह सामन्ताः सन्ति कोटिशः। तेषामेकः प्रभुरसौ रामो यो जगतः प्रभुः॥१८॥
“‘There are tens of millions of separate chiefs here, but they have one sovereign: Rāma, who is sovereign of the world.
Passage 19
मह्यं लङ्कामुना दत्ता वदान्यगणमौलिना। किमहं घोषयिष्यामि स्वाज्ञां तत्र विमूढधीः॥१९॥
“‘This crown of the generous gave Laṅkā to me. How could I foolishly proclaim my own command there?
Passage 20
मत्प्रभोरेव रामस्य नित्यमाज्ञा भविष्यति। जगत्त्रयेऽपि यस्याज्ञा तस्याज्ञात्रापि मे शुभा॥२०॥
“‘Only the command of my Lord Rāma shall prevail forever. His command rules the three worlds; that same auspicious command shall rule my realm.’ Rāma Would Give Rāvaṇa Sāketa

इत्युक्त्वा राक्षसेन्द्रे तु तूष्णींभूते कपीश्वरः। सुग्रीवः परिपप्रच्छ कौतुकात् संशयं त्विमम्॥२१॥
“When the rākṣasa king fell silent after speaking, the monkey lord Sugrīva curiously asked about this doubt:

राम राम महाबाहो वदान्यानां सुरद्रुम। निजपाणितलच्छाया रक्षिताशेषविष्टप॥२२॥
“‘Rāma! Mighty-armed Rāma! Wish-fulfilling tree among the generous, beneath whose palm's shade every world is protected!
Passage 23
विभीषणाय वीरेन्द्र लङ्का दत्ता त्वया ध्रुवम्। न तत्र मम संदेहो यद्भवान् सर्वशक्तिभृत्॥२३॥
“‘Lord of heroes, you have certainly given Laṅkā to Vibhīṣaṇa. I have no doubt that you possess every power.
Passage 24
एकस्तु मम सन्देहस्तं भवान् छेत्तुमर्हति। यदि जातु विनीतात्मा लङ्केशो दशकन्धरः॥२४॥
“‘But I have one doubt which you should remove. If the ten-headed lord of Laṅkā were ever to become humble—
Passage 25
यायात्ते शरणं देव शरणागतरक्षिणः। तत् किमस्मै भवान् दद्यादस्य मे कथयोत्तरम्॥२५॥
“‘—and seek refuge in you, protector of those who surrender, what would you give him? Tell me the answer.’
Passage 26
इत्युक्तः कपिराजेन रघुदेव उवाच तम्। अविचार्यैव सपदि स्मितद्योतितदिङ्मुखः॥२६॥
“Asked in this way by the monkey king, divine Rāma answered at once without deliberation, his smile illuminating the directions:

यदि मां शरणं यायात्सुग्रीव दशकन्धरः। अस्ति मे तर्हि साकेतपुरी याप्रतिमा भुवि॥२७॥
“‘Sugrīva, if the ten-headed king sought refuge in me, I possess the city of Sāketa, which has no equal upon the earth.
Passage 28
तामहं सहसा दद्यां तस्मै शरणमीयुषे। इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य वदान्यानां शिरोमणेः॥२८॥
“‘I would immediately give it to him when he came for refuge.’ Hearing the words of that crown among the generous—
Passage 29
सर्वेऽपि विस्मिताः सन्तो धन्यं धन्यमुदब्रुवन्। इत्थं तैस्तैर्वाग्विनोदैस्तद्दिनं तैः समापितम्॥२९॥
“—everyone was astonished and cried, ‘Blessed! Blessed!’ They passed the rest of that day in such delightful conversation. Battle Resumes
Passage 30
अपरेद्युः समुत्थाय सर्वं कृत्वा यथोचितम्। आजग्मुः समरोद्युक्ताः सुघोरां रणभूमिकाम्॥३०॥
“Rising the next day and completing every proper duty, they came to the dreadful battlefield ready for war.
Passage 31
पटहान् गोमुखांश्चैव वादयन्तो रणोन्मुखाः। युक्ताः सर्वे कपिभटा राक्षसैः सह संयुगे॥३१॥
“Facing battle and sounding paṭahas and gomukhas, all the monkey warriors engaged the rākṣasas in combat.
Passage 32
सानुजो राघवेन्द्रः स्वमास्फाल्य कठिनं धनुः। बाणैर्वह्निशिखाकारै रक्षोबलमदाह्वयत्॥३२॥
“The lord of the Raghus, accompanied by his younger brother, twanged his hard bow and challenged the rākṣasa force with arrows shaped like tongues of fire.
Passage 33
पुरस्तात्कपिसैन्यस्य हनुमान् रक्तलोचनः। सिंहनादं विधायोच्चैर्युक्तवान् युधि राक्षसैः॥३३॥
“At the monkey army's front, red-eyed Hanumān gave a mighty lion-roar and engaged the rākṣasas in battle.
Passage 34
तस्य नादेन वित्रस्ताः केचिद्राक्षससैनिकाः। पलायाञ्चक्रिरे तूर्णं संत्यज्य समराङ्गणम्॥३४॥
“Terrified by his roar, some rākṣasa soldiers quickly fled and abandoned the battlefield.
Passage 35
केचिच्च रक्षसां मुख्या वीर्यवन्तो दुरासदाः। आययुः सम्मुखे तस्य कपिवीरस्य गर्जतः॥३५॥
“Other rākṣasa leaders, powerful and unassailable, advanced to confront the roaring monkey hero.
Passage 36
गदापाणय आकृष्टधनुर्ज्यामुक्तमार्गणाः। आकृष्टाः परशुहस्ताः शूलकराः परे॥३६॥
“Some held maces, some loosed arrows from drawn bowstrings, some brandished axes, and others carried spears.
Passage 37
नानाविधप्रहरणा नानाविक्रमशालिनः। लङ्केशस्याज्ञया वीराः प्राणान् हुत्वा युधि स्थिताः॥३७॥
“Bearing many kinds of weapons and endowed with varied prowess, the warriors staked their lives and stood in battle by the lord of Laṅkā's command.
Passage 38
दर्शयन्तो विक्रमं स्वं परस्परमसूयया। निपेतुः कपिसैन्येषु वायुपुत्रो रुरोध तान्॥३८॥
“Jealously displaying their prowess to one another, they fell upon the monkey forces, but the son of the Wind checked them.
Passage 39
वेलेव पवनोदीर्णान् जलधेः पयसां भरान्। समेत्य तेऽतिबलिनो मारुतिं समवेष्टयन्॥३९॥
“Like the shore restraining masses of ocean water raised by the wind, Hanumān opposed them; those immensely powerful warriors gathered and surrounded him.
Passage 40
स तान् पादप्रहारेण पाणिक्षेपैर्विपोथनैः। प्रसह्याक्रमणैश्चैव ममर्द रजनीचरान्॥४०॥
“He crushed the night-roamers with kicks, blows and throws from his hands, forceful trampling, and overpowering attacks.
Passage 41
तेषां मुख्यः कोऽपि धूम्राक्षनामा घोराकारो राक्षसः क्रूरकर्मा। आकृष्टासिर्वेगवान् धावमानो युद्धायागाद्धनुमन्तं बलाढ्यः॥४१॥
“One of their leaders was a terrifying, cruel-deeded rākṣasa named Dhūmrākṣa. Powerful and swift, he drew his sword and charged Hanumān for battle.”
