Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— इत्थं सीतासमापृष्टा राक्षसी त्रिजटाह्वया। साक्षात्कृत्याब्रवीत्सर्वं रामरावणसंयुगम्॥१॥
Brahmā said: “Thus questioned by Sītā, the rākṣasī named Trijaṭā beheld and narrated the entire conflict between Rāma and Rāvaṇa.
Passage 2
त्रिजटोवाच— माघशुक्लतृतीयातो रक्षोराघवसैन्ययोः। वैशाखकृष्णभूतान्तमेतद्युद्धं भविष्यति॥२॥
Trijaṭā said: “This war between the rākṣasa and Rāghava armies will last from the third day of Māgha's bright fortnight until the end of Vaiśākha's dark fortnight.
Passage 3
तत्तेऽहं कथयिष्यामि जानकि श्रूयतां त्वया। यद्यस्य यत्र चरितं तत्र तत्तस्य वर्णये॥३॥
“Jānakī, I shall relate it to you; listen. Whatever deed each warrior performs in any place, I shall describe it there. The Armies Collide
Passage 4
रामबाहुबलोत्सिक्ताः कपिवीरा महोद्धटाः। लङ्केशदोर्बलोत्सिक्तैर्युध्यन्ते पश्य राक्षसैः॥४॥
“Look: the formidable monkey heroes, exalted by the strength of Rāma's arms, fight the rākṣasas who are exalted by the strength of the lord of Laṅkā's arms.
Passage 5
अमी मदोद्धता वीराः कपयः प्रहरन्त्यमून्। शिलाभिर्भूरुहैश्चापि राक्षसान् प्रहतान् पुरा॥५॥
“These proud monkey heroes strike those rākṣasas, already battered, with rocks and trees.
Passage 6
वृष्टिः कपिकरोन्मुक्ता ग्राववृक्षमयी घना। पतत्यस्रपदेहेषु मेघवृष्टिरिवाद्रिषु॥६॥
“A dense rain of rocks and trees released from the monkeys' hands falls upon the blood-drinkers' bodies like a cloudburst upon mountains.
Passage 7
छन्ना एव कपिव्रातै राक्षसा ग्रावभूरुहैः। दृष्ट्वा दृष्ट्वातिशोकार्ता राक्षस्योऽद्य रुदन्ति हि॥७॥
“The rākṣasas are entirely covered by the monkey multitudes with rocks and trees. Seeing this again and again, the rākṣasī women now weep in overwhelming grief.
Passage 8
अहो बलं कपीन्द्राणां येषां करचपेटया। पतन्ति राक्षसा युद्धे महापर्वतसम्मिताः॥८॥
“How immense is the monkey lords' strength! Slaps from their hands make rākṣasas as massive as great mountains fall in battle.
Passage 9
एकैको वानरो वीर एकैकं रजनीचरम्। अयोधयद्रणे घोरे कुर्वाणो भूरिविक्रमम्॥९॥
“Each heroic monkey fights a single night-roamer in the terrible battle, displaying immense valor.
Passage 10
सेनाधिपतयः सर्वे रामस्यातिबलोर्जिताः। कपियूथान् प्रेरयन्तो गर्जन्ति बहुशो रणे॥१०॥
“All of Rāma's exceedingly powerful commanders repeatedly roar in battle as they urge the monkey companies forward.
Passage 11
मुष्टीमुष्टियुताः केचिद् वृक्षावृक्षि परे युताः। शिलाशिलियुताश्चान्ये राक्षसैः सह वानराः॥११॥
“Some monkeys engage the rākṣasas fist against fist, others tree against tree, and still others rock against rock.
Passage 12
हस्ताहस्ति परे युक्ताः पादापादि तथा परे। दन्तादन्ति युताश्चान्ये नखानखि परे युताः॥१२॥
“Some contend hand against hand and others foot against foot; some fight tooth against tooth and others nail against nail.
Passage 13
राक्षसैः सह युध्यन्ते वानराः सुमहोद्धताः। गर्जन्तश्चैव धावन्तः कुर्वन्तो घोरविक्रमान्॥१३॥
“The fiercely aroused monkeys fight the rākṣasas, roaring and charging as they perform terrible feats of valor.
Passage 14
आबद्धभ्रुकुटीतरङ्गविकटा विस्फारभीमानना रक्षांसि करपाददन्तनखरक्रूरप्रहारोद्धराः। गर्जन्तः समराङ्गणे किलकिलाशब्दैर्भृशं दारुणे युध्यन्ते रजनीचरैः कपिभटा आबद्धकक्षोटकाः॥१४॥
“Their faces fearfully expanded and made fierce by waves of knitted brows, the monkey warriors strike the rākṣasas cruelly with hands, feet, teeth, and nails. Girded firmly for battle, they roar with piercing cries and fight the night-roamers upon the exceedingly dreadful field.
Passage 15
पेतुर्भुवि कपीन्द्राणां प्रहारैरतिदारुणैः। वमन्तो रुधिरां धारां मुखेभ्यो रजनीचराः॥१५॥
“Struck by the monkey lords' extremely violent blows, the night-roamers fall upon the earth, streams of blood pouring from their mouths.
Passage 16
मुष्टिप्रहारैः कठिनै रक्षसां घोरकर्मणाम्। पतन्ति कपयोऽप्याजौ युध्यन्ते पुनरुत्थिताः॥१६॥
“The monkeys too fall in battle beneath the hard fist-blows of the terrible rākṣasas, but rise again and resume fighting.
Passage 17
निपोथयन्ति रक्षांसि समरे कपिसैनिकान्। तद् दृष्ट्वा चापरे क्रूरा न क्षमन्ते कपीश्वराः॥१७॥
“The rākṣasas crush monkey soldiers in battle. Seeing this, the other fierce monkey lords cannot endure it.
Passage 18
प्रेरितस्वस्वयूथाश्च युध्यन्ते कपियूथपाः। नानाविधैः प्रहरणैः शिलावृक्षनखादिभिः॥१८॥
“The monkey commanders urge forward their respective companies and fight with many kinds of weapons—rocks, trees, nails, and more. A Roar Fills Earth and Sky
Passage 19
राक्षसैर्युध्यमानानां कपीनां सम्प्रहारजः। सुमहानारवो युद्धं व्याप्नोति धरणीं नभः॥१९॥
“The immense clamor arising as monkeys trade blows with rākṣasas fills the battlefield, the earth, and the sky.
Passage 20
मृगेन्द्राः किं नु गर्जन्ति गह्वरेषु महीभृताम्। प्रलयाम्भोधरघटा घोषयन्त्यथवा दिशः॥२०॥
“Are lions roaring in mountain caves, or are masses of doomsday clouds making the directions resound?
Passage 21
देवदानवयुद्धोत्थः सुमहानारवः किमु। अन्योन्यं किं नु संघट्टो गिरीणां घर्घरायते॥२१॥
“Is it the immense roar arising from a war between gods and demons, or does a collision of mountains rumble against one another?
Passage 22
किं वा देवासुरैर्युक्तैर्मथ्यते जलधिः पुनः। दीर्यते वाथ धरणी सिंहो वापि गर्जति॥२२॥
“Are the united gods and demons churning the ocean again? Is the earth splitting apart, or is a lion roaring?
Passage 23
इत्थमाशङ्कमानानां जगतां विस्मयोऽभवत्। कपीन्द्रेषु च रक्षःसु प्रहरत्सु परस्परम्॥२३॥
“The worlds wondered in this way while the monkey lords and rākṣasas struck one another. The Monkey Commanders Enter the Battle
Passage 24
रक्षसां विक्रमं दृष्ट्वा सुग्रीवः कपिसैन्यराट्। शिलावृक्षप्रहारौघैर्युध्यते घोरविक्रमः॥२४॥
“Seeing the rākṣasas' valor, Sugrīva, king of the monkey army and terrible in prowess, fights with torrents of blows from rocks and trees.
Passage 25
हनूमान् घनवद्गर्जन् रक्षोयूथेषु रोषणः। पपात वज्रसम्पातचपेटापातभीषणः॥२५॥
“Hanumān, enraged, roars like a cloud and falls upon the rākṣasa companies, dreadful with slaps that descend like thunderbolts.
Passage 26
प्रहरत्यद्रिभिस्तुङ्गैरद्रितुल्यान् निशाचरान्। ते तत्प्रहारविध्वस्ता निपेतुः शतशो रणे॥२६॥
“With towering mountains he strikes night-roamers who resemble mountains. Shattered by those blows, they fall by the hundreds in battle.
Passage 27
हनूमतः प्रहारेण विक्षताङ्गा निशाचराः। क्षरन्तो रौधिरीर्धाराः सांध्यमेघा इवारुणाः॥२७॥
“The night-roamers, their limbs torn by Hanumān's blows and shedding streams of blood, appear red like clouds at twilight.
Passage 28
बभ्रमुः समरे भूयः सृजन्तो घोरमारवम्। केचिन्मूर्छायिताः पेतुर्धरण्यां पर्वतोपमाः॥२८॥
“They reel about the battle, raising a dreadful cry. Some, massive as mountains, faint and fall upon the earth.
Passage 29
राक्षसाः केऽपि निहता नलेन बलशालिना। छादयन्तो महीपृष्ठं निपेतुर्निद्रिता इव॥२९॥
“Some rākṣasas slain by powerful Nala fall like sleepers and cover the surface of the earth.
Passage 30
नीलदोर्वेगचलितशिलावृक्षप्रहारजैः। आघातैः पतिताः केचिदपुनर्जागरा रणे॥३०॥
“Some fall beneath the impacts of rocks and trees propelled by the force of Nīla's arms, never to awaken again in battle.
Passage 31
करप्रहारैर्बलिनो वालिपुत्रस्य राक्षसाः। वमन्तो रुधिरं युद्धे निपेतुर्धरणीतले॥३१॥
“Rākṣasas struck by the powerful son of Vāli's hands fall upon the battlefield, vomiting blood.
Passage 32
प्रहारैरुन्मुखकपेः राक्षसाः पर्वतोपमाः। शिश्यिरे धरणीपृष्ठमालिङ्ग्य गतजीविताः॥३२॥
“Mountain-like rākṣasas, killed by the charging monkey's blows, lie embracing the surface of the earth.
Passage 33
द्विविदस्य कपीशस्य पाणिपादनिपोथनैः। संत्यक्तजीविताः केचित्स्वपन्ति धरणीतले॥३३॥
“Some, their lives abandoned beneath the crushing hands and feet of the monkey lord Dvivida, sleep upon the earth.
Passage 34
ऋक्षेशो बलवांस्तत्र वृद्धो युद्धविशारदः। राक्षसान् सुबहून् युद्धे पातयामास विक्रमी॥३४॥
“There the powerful and aged lord of bears, expert in war and full of prowess, casts down a great many rākṣasas in battle.
Passage 35
स्वयूथ्यान् बलिनः शूरान् प्रेरयन्नृक्षपुङ्गवान्। समरे शुशुभे चासौ कालमेघ इवोच्चतः॥३५॥
“Urging forward the powerful, heroic bears of his own company, he shines upon the battlefield like a towering doomsday cloud.
Passage 36
पाणिपादप्रहारैश्च जाम्बवान् सम्मुखागतान्। अपुनर्योधिनश्चक्रे बलिनो रजनीचरान्॥३६॥
“With blows from his hands and feet, Jāmbavān makes the powerful night-roamers who confront him incapable of fighting again. Seven Days of Combat
Passage 37
एवं सप्तदिनान्यासीद्रक्षोवानरसेन्ययोः। अतीव संकुलं युद्धं सुघोरं रोमहर्षणम्॥३७॥
“Thus for seven days the rākṣasa and monkey armies wage a confused, exceedingly dreadful, hair-raising battle.
Passage 38
तस्मिन् रणेऽतितुमुले त्रिजगद्विस्मयावहे। रक्षोभिर्वानरैश्चैव भूमिरातस्तरेतराम्॥३८॥
“In that deafening battle, which astonishes the three worlds, rākṣasas and monkeys completely cover the earth.
Passage 39
संत्यक्तमृत्युभय भूरिभियो गृहीतस्वामिव्रताः कपिभटा युधि गर्जमानाः। चक्रुर्निशाचरचमूकदनं समन्तात्ते पाणिपादनखदन्तभवैः प्रहारैः॥३९॥
“Having cast aside fear of death and every great terror, the roaring monkey warriors uphold their vow to their master. On every side they destroy the night-roamer army with blows from hands, feet, nails, and teeth.”
