Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— पश्यतां रक्षसां तेषां दाहव्याकुलितात्मनाम्। दग्ध्वा लङ्कापुरीं कृत्स्नां लाङ्गूलानलचालनात्॥१॥
Brahmā said: While the rākṣasas watched, their minds distraught by the conflagration, Hanumān burned all of Laṅkā by sweeping about the fire on his tail.
Passage 2
व्यालिख्य नखरैः क्रुद्धो रावणस्य मुखं जवात्। पुच्छस्पृशि शुचौ तूर्णं पपाताम्भोधिपार्श्वतः॥२॥
In anger he swiftly scored Rāvaṇa's face with his claws, then, while the flame still touched his tail, hurried to the ocean's edge.
Passage 3
उदस्य पुच्छसंलग्नं तूलकर्पटपावकम्। क्रीडितश्चिरमम्भोधिलहरीषु सुशीतलः॥३॥
Casting off the burning cotton and cloth fastened to his tail, he cooled himself and sported for a long while in the ocean waves.
Passage 4
शनैः प्राप महेन्द्राद्रिमुत्पत्य व्योमवर्त्मना। हरीणां पुरतः सर्वं कथयामास वृत्तकम्॥४॥
Rising along the path of the sky, he soon reached Mount Mahendra and told the monkeys everything that had happened.
Passage 5
ततस्ते हरयः सर्वे सिद्धार्था वायुसूनुना। व्यावर्तिता हनुमता प्रययू रामसन्निधिम्॥५॥
Their mission accomplished by the son of the Wind, all the monkeys turned back with Hanumān and went into Rāma's presence.
Passage 6
मार्गे मधुवनं कृत्स्नं कीशैरालोडितं हठात्। रम्यमापानभूमिर्या रक्षसां घोरकर्मणाम्॥६॥
On the way, the monkeys exuberantly overran the whole of Madhuvana, a delightful drinking ground belonging to the rākṣasas of dreadful deeds.
Passage 7
निहता वनपालाश्च राक्षसाः सुमहोद्धताः। कपिभिर्हनुमद्युक्तैर्नखदन्तवरायुधैः॥७॥
The fiercely arrogant rākṣasa wardens were struck down by the monkeys accompanying Hanumān, whose excellent weapons were their claws and teeth.
Passage 8
अथ तैः कपिभिः साकं हनुमानुग्रकर्मकृत्। ददर्श श्रीरघुवरं गिरौ माल्यवति स्थितम्॥८॥
Then Hanumān, performer of formidable deeds, went with those monkeys and saw noble Rāma standing upon Mount Mālyavat.
Passage 9
ददौ च तत्प्रयत्नेन सीतामूर्धविभूषणम्। चूडारत्नं महार्हं तदाददौ तत्करात्प्रभुः॥९॥
With care he offered Sītā's head ornament. The Lord accepted that priceless crest jewel from his hand.
Passage 10
तन्निधाय स्वहृदये चूडारत्नं मृगीदृशः। मुमोह भगवान् राम उद्दीक्ष्य विरहानलः॥१०॥
Placing the doe-eyed Sītā's crest jewel against his heart and gazing upon it, Lord Rāma was overcome by the fire of separation.
Passage 11
चिरं मूर्छामवापैष सीतासंगतचेतनः। ततः सम्मार्ज्य वदनं लक्ष्मणेनैव सान्त्वितः॥११॥
His consciousness absorbed in Sītā, he remained faint for a long time. Lakṣmaṇa then wiped his face and consoled him. Rāma Marches to the Ocean
Passage 12
अथ प्रतस्थौ भगवान् लङ्केशजयकाङ्क्षया। अष्टादशमहापद्मकपिसैन्यसमन्वितः॥१२॥
Then the Lord set out, intent on conquering Laṅkā's ruler, accompanied by eighteen mahāpadmas of monkey troops.
Passage 13
सरितो गाधयन् सर्वाः समीकुर्वंश्च भूतलम्। भारैराकुलयन् शेषं कपिसैन्यसमुद्भवैः॥१३॥
The host made every river fordable and leveled the ground, while the weight of the monkey army heavily burdened Śeṣa beneath the earth.
Passage 14
प्रचेलुः कपिमातङ्गाः पुरोऽस्य गिरिसम्मिताः। आस्फोटयन्तो दोर्दण्डान् दीर्घाहंकारसंयुताः॥१४॥
Mountain-sized elephants among monkeys marched before him, slapping their massive arms and sounding long, proud cries.
Passage 15
जाम्बवान् नाम ऋक्षेशो महदृक्षबलेन सः। प्रचचाल प्रभोरग्रे भारैराकुलयन् भुवम्॥१५॥
Jāmbavān, lord of the bears, advanced before the Lord with a great bear host whose weight pressed heavily upon the earth.
Passage 16
मार्गशीर्षसिताष्टम्यां भास्करे शिरसि स्थिते। ऋक्षे चोत्तरफाल्गुन्यां मुहूर्ते विजयाभिधे॥१६॥
It was the bright eighth of Mārgaśīrṣa, with the sun at the meridian, the lunar mansion Uttara Phālgunī prevailing, and the hour named Vijaya.
Passage 17
चक्रे प्रयाणं श्रीरामो जयाय जयिनां वरः। महता कपिसैन्येन चतुर्दिक्षु प्रसारिणा॥१७॥
At that time Śrī Rāma, foremost of conquerors, commenced his victorious march with the vast monkey army spreading in all four directions.
Passage 18
सुग्रीवो हनुमांश्चैव नलो नीलोऽङ्गदस्तथा। अन्ये च कपयः शूराः प्रभुकार्यविधित्सया॥१८॥
Sugrīva, Hanumān, Nala, Nīla, Aṅgada, and the other heroic monkeys went with the desire to accomplish their Lord's work.
Passage 19
चालयन्तो भुवं कृत्स्नां प्रचेलुः सैन्यभीषणाः। रामलक्ष्मणदोर्दण्डबलेनोत्साहसंयुताः॥१९॥
The fearsome troops marched on, shaking the entire earth, their courage sustained by the strength of Rāma's and Lakṣmaṇa's mighty arms.
Passage 20
ते सप्तभिर्दिनैः प्राप्तास्तीरं लवणनीरधेः। तत्र सा महती सेना यथास्थानं निवेशिता॥२०॥
In seven days they reached the shore of the salt ocean, and there the great army was encamped in its proper formations. Vibhīṣaṇa Seeks Refuge
Passage 21
तीरे नीरनिधेः श्रीशः पौषस्याद्य दिनत्रयम्। निविष्टः कपिसैन्येन सार्धमाकुलयन् भुवम्॥२१॥
At the ocean's shore, the glorious Lord remained with the monkey host for the first three days of Pauṣa, their presence crowding the earth.
Passage 22
चतुर्थे दिवसे प्राप्तः शरणेऽस्य विभीषणः। उत्प्लुत्य व्योममार्गेण बद्धाञ्जलिपुटः पुरः॥२२॥
On the fourth day Vibhīṣaṇa came to seek his refuge, springing through the sky and appearing before him with palms joined.
Passage 23
तं ददर्श रघुश्रेष्ठं करुणालोललोचनः। आगत्य भक्तिमांस्तस्य पपात पदयोश्च सः॥२३॥
With eyes moving in compassion, the devoted Vibhīṣaṇa beheld the noblest Rāghava, approached him, and fell at his feet.
Passage 24
सुतो विश्रवसः पौत्रः पुलस्त्यस्य रघूद्वह। नाम्ना विभीषणः सोऽहं नतोऽस्मि त्वां जगत्पते॥२४॥
“Scion of Raghu, I am Vibhīṣaṇa, son of Viśravas and grandson of Pulastya. I bow before you, Lord of the world.
Passage 25
ज्येष्ठः स मे दशमुखो येन पापं महत्कृतम्। ध्रुवमात्मकृतस्यैष फलं प्राप्स्यति सत्वरम्॥२५॥
“The ten-headed one is my elder brother, and he has committed a great sin. He will surely and swiftly receive the fruit of his own deed.”
Passage 26
इत्युक्ते रक्षसा तेन श्रीरामस्तस्य मूर्धनि। निदधौ करपद्मं स्वं विश्वाभयधृतव्रतम्॥२६॥
When the rākṣasa had spoken thus, Śrī Rāma—whose vow is to grant fearlessness to the world—placed his lotus hand upon Vibhīṣaṇa's head.
Passage 27
अथो तमुत्थापयति स्म राघवो धरानतं पादसरोरुहस्पृशम्। सुशीतलच्छायकरावदानतः प्रत्यङ्गजाग्रत्पुलकाङ्कुराञ्चितम्॥२७॥
Then Rāghava raised him from the ground, where he had bowed and touched the Lord's lotus feet. Beneath the supremely cool shade of Rāma's hand, sprouts of ecstatic horripilation awakened upon every limb of Vibhīṣaṇa's body.
