Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— स तान् प्रहरतो दृष्ट्वा राक्षसान् घोरकर्मणः। चुकोप बलवान् वीरो वायुसूनुर्महोज्जितः॥१॥
Brahmā said: Seeing those rākṣasas of dreadful deeds striking at him, the mighty and heroic son of the Wind, possessed of great force, grew angry.
Passage 2
ततो जघान तरुभिः स तानापततोऽसुरान्। समूलोत्पाटितैस्तुङ्गैर्दीर्घशाखाशिखान्वितैः॥२॥
He then struck the charging demons with tall trees uprooted whole, complete with their long branches and crowns.
Passage 3
महाशैलशिलाभिश्च कठिनाभिः सहस्रशः। तीक्ष्णाग्राभिर्महावेगपातिनीभिर्नभस्तलात्॥३॥
He also hurled thousands of hard boulders from great mountains, their points sharp and their fall from the sky tremendously swift.
Passage 4
कांश्चित्पाणिप्रहारेण पादघातैस्तथापरान्। पाणिपादनखैः कांश्चिद्दंष्ट्राभिश्चैव कांश्चन॥४॥
Some he struck with his hands, others with kicks; some with the nails of his hands and feet, and still others with his fangs.
Passage 5
उत्पत्याक्रमणैः कांश्चित्कांश्चिद्भ्रमविपोथनैः। कांश्चिद्दुष्प्रहारैश्च प्रजघान निशाचरान्॥५॥
He killed the night-roamers—some by leaping assaults, some by whirling and battering them, and some by terrible blows.
Passage 6
पतिताः पुनरुत्तस्थुः प्रहारैरतिदारुणैः। क्षरत्क्षतजसम्पृक्ता राक्षसा घोरनादिनः॥६॥
The rākṣasas fell beneath his exceedingly fierce blows, then rose again, drenched in blood flowing from their wounds and roaring terribly.
Passage 7
घूर्णायन्ते स्म धरणौ पतिताः केऽपि राक्षसाः। वातपुत्रेण बलिना मर्मणि प्रसभं हताः॥७॥
Some rākṣasas reeled upon the ground after the mighty son of the Wind struck their vital points with overwhelming force.
Passage 8
महाशैलशिलाघातप्रहताः केऽपि राक्षसाः। वमन्तो रुधिरं वक्त्राद् घूर्णन्ति स्म धरातले॥८॥
Other rākṣasas, battered by great mountain rocks, rolled upon the earth while vomiting blood from their mouths.
Passage 9
मूर्छामापेदिरे तेन यातुधानाः सुनिहताः। जवेरिताभिः प्रसभं चपेटाभिर्बलीयसा॥९॥
The powerful Hanumān felled the demons with violently delivered slaps, and they lost consciousness beneath the force of his blows.
Passage 10
उत्पाट्योत्पाट्य तरुभिर्जघान बलिनोऽसुरान्। इत्थं सर्वं वनमपि क्षपितं तेन वेगिना॥१०॥
Uprooting tree after tree, he slew the powerful demons with them. Thus the swift hero laid waste to the entire garden as well.
Passage 11
हताश्च राक्षसाः सर्वे महागर्वभराकुलाः। पतङ्गा इव दीपेऽस्मिन् नाशं जग्मुः समन्ततः॥११॥
All the rākṣasas, swollen with immense pride, were slain. From every side they met destruction like moths entering a flame.
Passage 12
अक्षमुख्येषु रक्षःसु पातितेषु हनूमता। क्रव्यादाः शतशस्तस्मात्पलायनं चक्रिरेतराम्॥१२॥
When Hanumān felled the rākṣasas headed by Akṣa, the flesh-eaters fled from that place by the hundreds.
Passage 13
पलायितेषु रक्षःसु पातितेषु च तेष्वथ। चुकोप लङ्काधिपतिः सर्वेभ्यः सूनुना सह॥१३॥
After the rākṣasas had fled or fallen, the lord of Laṅkā became angry with them all, together with his son.
Passage 14
अथास्याभिमुखं प्राप्तो योद्धुं लङ्कापतेः सुतः। इन्द्रजिन्नाम बलवान् निर्जिताशेषदिक्पतिः॥१४॥
Then Laṅkā's mighty prince Indrajit, conqueror of all the guardians of the directions, came forward to fight Hanumān.
Passage 15
तेनासौ युयुधे धीमानप्रमेयबलः कपिः। शिलाभिस्तरुभिस्तुङ्गैर्निर्घातरवभीषणैः॥१५॥
The wise monkey of immeasurable strength fought him with rocks and towering trees, amid a terrible sound like thunderclaps.
Passage 16
युद्ध्यमानो युधि बली हनूमांस्तेन रक्षसा। ब्रह्मास्त्रेण समाबद्धः स्वेच्छाचारः सुनिर्भयः॥१६॥
While fighting that rākṣasa, mighty Hanumān—fearless and acting by his own will—allowed himself to be completely bound by the Brahmāstra.
Passage 17
ततः स्वभवनं नीतो विस्मितै राक्षसैर्वृतः। यूथैश्च नरनारीणां दृश्यमानो बलाधिकः॥१७॥
The immensely strong Hanumān was then taken to Rāvaṇa's palace, surrounded by astonished rākṣasas and watched by crowds of men and women. Rāvaṇa Orders Hanumān's Tail Burned
Passage 18
तमुद्दिश्य दशस्कन्ध इत्याह तनयं निजम्। ज्वाल्यतामेष दुश्चेष्टः कपीनामधमः खलः॥१८॥
Pointing to him, the ten-headed king told his son, “Set this vicious creature alight—this vile wretch, the lowest of monkeys.”
Passage 19
हनुमानब्रवीत् क्रुद्धान् राक्षसान् कपिनां वरः। कामं प्रज्वाल्य एवास्मि पुच्छे वह्निं नियुज्य मे॥१९॥
Hanumān, foremost of monkeys, told the angry rākṣasas, “By all means set me ablaze—apply the fire to my tail.”
Passage 20
तदर्थं तूलसम्भारैः कर्पटैश्चापि कोटिशः। पुच्छमावेष्ट्यतामाशु मम तैलैर्निषिच्य च॥२०॥
“For that purpose, quickly wrap my tail in masses of cotton and countless cloths, then soak it thoroughly with oil.
Passage 21
अग्निर्नियुज्यतां तस्मिन्निति यास्याम्यहं क्षयम्। ज्वलिते किल लाङ्गूले सर्वाङ्गज्वालितः क्रमात्॥२१॥
“Apply fire to it, and I shall thereby meet destruction: once my tail burns, the flames will surely spread over my whole body.”
Passage 22
पुच्छमेवातिविततं मम ज्वालयतासुराः। इत्युक्ते च तथा चक्रुः कुधियो राक्षसाः खलाः॥२२॥
“Demons, set my greatly extended tail on fire.” When he spoke thus, the wicked, foolish rākṣasas did exactly that.
Passage 23
अथ तैलद्रवैः सिक्ते लाङ्गूलपरिवेष्टिते। तूलकर्पटसम्भारे उत्पपात मरुत्सुतः॥२३॥
When the mass of cotton and cloth wrapped around his tail had been soaked with oil, the son of the Wind sprang up. The Fire Spreads Through Laṅkā
Passage 24
अध ऊर्ध्वं च गेहानां दिक्षु सर्वासु संचरन्। सकलां ज्वालयामास पुच्छज्वालैः स तां पुरीम्॥२४॥
Moving beneath, above, and around the houses in every direction, he set that entire city alight with the flames from his tail.
Passage 25
यत्र यत्र जगामासौ प्रज्वलत्पुच्छपावकः। तत्र तत्रैव जज्वाल गृहाट्टावलिसंहतिः॥२५॥
Wherever he went with his tail blazing, the clustered rows of houses and tall mansions caught fire there and then.
Passage 26
जज्वलुर्भवनान्युच्चैर्हैमानि विपुलानि च। कोष्ठानि चाट्टावल्यो हट्टपथगृहा अपि॥२६॥
Lofty and spacious golden buildings burned, as did storerooms, rows of mansions, and houses along the market roads.
Passage 27
प्रासादा वणिजां वेश्मान्यापणाः पण्यवीथिकाः। अमात्यभवनान्युच्चैर्देवागाराणि भूरिशः॥२७॥
Palaces, merchants' houses, shops and commercial streets, ministers' lofty residences, and many temples all burned.
Passage 28
अध ऊर्ध्वं तथा मध्ये दिक्षु सर्वासु च ज्वलन्। पावको ज्वालयामास तत्क्षणात् सकलां पुरीम्॥२८॥
Blazing below, above, and through the middle in every direction, the fire consumed the entire city in that very instant.
Passage 29
आसनानि महार्हाणि सुखासनवराणि च। सिंहासनानि चारूणि वसनानि वराणि च॥२९॥
Priceless seats, fine couches, beautiful thrones, and splendid garments burned.
Passage 30
वासनानि विचित्राणि शयनानि शुभानि च। भाजनान्यन्नभाण्डानि घृतभाण्डानि भूरिशः॥३०॥
Varied furnishings, beautiful beds, vessels, stores of food, and many containers of ghee burned.
Passage 31
हैयंगवीनभाण्डानि तैलभाण्डानि कोटिशः। मुक्तादामविलम्बीनि वितानानि सहस्रशः॥३१॥
Containers of fresh butter, millions of oil jars, and thousands of canopies hung with strings of pearls burned.
Passage 32
वातायनानि हैमानि ज्वलन्ति प्रज्वलन्ति च। प्रससार चतुर्दिक्षु पावकः कपिपुच्छजः॥३२॥
Golden windows blazed fiercely as the fire born from the monkey's tail spread in all four directions.
Passage 33
रामचन्द्रप्रतापेन सीताशापोपतापतः। जज्वलुः कनकावासास्तृणपूलकुटीरवत्॥३३॥
Through Rāmacandra's majesty and the searing force of Sītā's curse, the golden dwellings burned like huts made from bundles of straw. Laṅkā Cries Out
Passage 34
आरावः समभूद्द्रुतं राक्षसानां गृहे गृहे। अहो रे सेवकास्तूर्णं धावत प्रतिधावत॥३४॥
A cry suddenly arose in every rākṣasa house: “Servants! Hurry—run here and there!
Passage 35
निष्कासयत भाण्डानि सम्भालयत कोष्ठकान्। हा जलं हा जलं चेति कोलाहलरवोऽभवत्॥३५॥
“Carry out the valuables! Protect the storerooms! Water—oh, water!” Such was the tumultuous uproar.
Passage 36
हा हा ज्वलन्ति वस्त्राणि दह्यन्ते भूषणानि च। किं किं निष्कासयामोऽद्य पतिताः का इहापदः॥३६॥
“Alas, the clothes are burning and the ornaments are being consumed! What can we carry out now? What disaster has befallen us here?”
Passage 37
अहो सर्वस्वनाशो नः कुतोऽयं समुपस्थितः। बालान् वृद्धांश्च दारांश्च सम्भालयत सत्वरम्॥३७॥
“Ah, from where has this total ruin come upon us? Quickly save the children, the elderly, and our families!”
Passage 38
हा हा निर्मोचयत गा गोष्ठे लग्नः किलानलः। हा हन्त वायुरप्यद्य सत्यमग्निसखोऽभवत्॥३८॥
“Alas, release the cows—the cowshed has caught fire! Alas, today the wind has truly become the fire's ally.”
Passage 39
वायुना प्रेरितो वह्निः प्रसरत्ययमुद्भटः। दग्धा एव गृहाः सर्वे कोष्ठाट्टालकसंयुताः॥३९॥
Driven by the wind, this mighty fire spreads onward. All the houses, together with their storerooms and towers, are already burned.
Passage 40
आः कोऽयं कुत आयातः कपिवेशः कृतान्तकः। किं वैशसममुष्यात्र त्रैलोक्येशे दशानने॥४०॥
“Who is this death-dealer in a monkey's form, and where has he come from? Why can he wreak such devastation here while ten-headed Rāvaṇa rules the three worlds?
Passage 41
वध्यतां बध्यतामेष कूर्दमानोऽखिले पुरे। अहो लङ्कापतेरद्य कोऽयं भाग्यविपर्ययः॥४१॥
“Kill him! Bind him as he bounds through the entire city! Ah, what reversal of fortune has befallen Laṅkā's lord today?”
Passage 42
अस्तंगत इवाभाति प्रतापोऽस्य जगत्पतेः। यदियं कपिमात्रेण दह्यते निखिला पुरी॥४२॥
The majesty of that lord of the world seems to have set like the sun, since this entire city is being burned by a mere monkey.
Passage 43
इति संक्रोशतां तेषां राक्षसां प्रतिमन्दिरम्। जज्वाल पावको दीप्तश्चतुर्दिक्षु प्रसृत्वरः॥४३॥
As the rākṣasas cried out in every dwelling, the brilliant fire blazed and spread through all four directions.
Passage 44
प्रताप इव रामस्य ज्वालामालातिभीषणः। क्रोधाग्निरिव सीतायाः परिणामसुनिष्ठुरः॥४४॥
Its garland of flames was exceedingly terrible, like Rāma's majesty and like the fire of Sītā's wrath, unyielding in its final effect.
Passage 45
दग्ध्वा कृत्स्नां दशमुखपुरीं दीर्घलाङ्गूललग्नै- र्वह्निज्वालासमुदयभरैः संगतैः प्रत्यगारम्। हेलाव्यालोडितदशमुखारण्य उच्चैर्हनूमान्- उत्प्लुत्याब्धौ तनुदहननिर्वापणार्थं पपात॥४५॥
Having burned the ten-headed king's entire city house by house with masses of fire rising from his long tail, Hanumān—who had sportingly churned Rāvaṇa's forest—leapt high and plunged into the ocean to extinguish the fire upon his body.
