Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— अथ तद्राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वनं सान्द्रघनोपमम्। सुमनोहरमानीललतामण्डपमण्डितम्॥१॥
Brahmā said: That rākṣasa king's garden resembled a dense cloud and was exceedingly charming, adorned with dark-green vine pavilions.
Passage 2
अनेकैरपि रक्षोभिर्गोपितं भूरिभूरुहम्। लङ्केशकेलिभवनं स्रवन्निर्झरशोभितम्॥२॥
Many rākṣasas guarded this pleasure retreat of Laṅkā's lord, rich in trees and beautified by flowing waterfalls.
Passage 3
आज्ञावशैः षड्क्रतुभिः सेवितं स्वस्वसम्पदा। फुल्लवृक्षलतावृन्दविचित्रखगनादितम्॥३॥
The six seasons, obedient to command, served it with their respective riches. Flowering trees and vines filled it, and varied birds called there.
Passage 4
स्वर्गीयवनाढ्याभिर्दीर्घिकाभिरलंकृतम्। सरोभिः क्वणितानेकराजहंसैः समन्वितम्॥४॥
Long pools rich as heavenly gardens adorned it, and its lakes were filled with the calls of many royal swans.
Passage 5
दृष्ट्वा बली मरुत्सूनुरमर्षपरिपूरितः। आचकाङ्क्ष प्रमथितुं रावणस्य सुखं च सः॥५॥
Seeing it, the powerful son of the Wind was filled with indignation and resolved to destroy Rāvaṇa's pleasure. Hanumān Uproots the Garden
Passage 6
अथास्फोटयभुजं द्वन्द्वं जङ्घानिर्घातभीषणः। उत्पपात वने तस्मिन् हनूमान् विक्रमोर्जितः॥६॥
Hanumān slapped his two arms, terrifying with the impact of his legs, and sprang into that garden, mighty in valor.
Passage 7
सीतयाधिष्ठितां त्यक्त्वा कङ्केलितरुवाटिकाम्। ममाथ सकलं वीरो वनं रक्षोधिपस्य तत्॥७॥
Leaving untouched the kankeli grove occupied by Sītā, the hero crushed all the rest of the rākṣasa lord's garden.
Passage 8
तरून् बभञ्ज विटपस्कन्धमूलसमन्वितान्। उच्चैर्नभःस्पृशो दीर्घानाधूयाधूय वेगतः॥८॥
Again and again he violently shook and broke tall, sky-touching trees together with their branches, trunks, and roots.
Passage 9
प्रजहार बली पद्भ्यां कांश्चिदारभ्य मूलतः। कांश्चिदुत्पाटयामास दोर्भ्यामाधूय भूरुहान्॥९॥
The mighty hero struck some trees with his feet from their very roots and, swinging others with his arms, tore them from the earth.
Passage 10
तस्य वेगोद्भवो वातः कम्पयामास सर्वतः। वनं तद्घोरकल्पान्तसमीरणहृतं यथा॥१०॥
The wind born from his speed shook the garden on every side, as though it were swept by the terrible wind at the end of an age.
Passage 11
कांश्चिद्विदारयामास मूलादारभ्य सोऽग्रतः। बभञ्ज विनताः शाखा घोरपादप्रहारतः॥११॥
He split some trees from root to tip and broke their bending branches with terrible kicks.
Passage 12
तदङ्गसंभवैर्घोरैः पवनैः संततोद्धतैः। आरामभूरुहाः सर्वे भयेनेव चकम्पिरे॥१२॥
All the garden trees trembled as if from fear before the fierce, continuously rising winds generated by his body.
Passage 13
प्रहारैः पादतलजैर्जम्बेनेव व्यदीर्यत। आरामभूमिरखिला कम्पमाना सह द्रुमैः॥१३॥
Under the blows born from his soles, the entire garden ground split open as though struck by a crushing force, trembling together with its trees.
Passage 14
जगाहे भूरिवेगेन वनं तदखिलं बली। यथा वृक्षा व्यशीर्यन्त लतामण्डपमण्डिताः॥१४॥
The powerful hero rushed through the whole garden with immense speed, so that the trees adorned by vine pavilions shattered.
Passage 15
वृक्षान् विटपशश्चक्रे विटपान् पर्णशस्तथा। पर्णानि तिलशश्चक्रे प्रहारैः पाणिपादजैः॥१५॥
With blows from hands and feet he reduced trees to branches, branches to leaves, and leaves to particles as small as sesame seeds.
Passage 16
वापीर्विध्वंसयामास हेमरत्नविनिर्मिताः। अपः कलुषयामास वापीनां सरसामपि॥१६॥
He destroyed stepped pools fashioned from gold and jewels and muddied the waters of pools and lakes.
Passage 17
पादप्रहारविध्वस्ता उड्डीयन्ते स्म भित्तयः। तथा रत्नशिला दीर्घाः कणशः कृतवान् बली॥१७॥
Walls shattered by his kicks flew apart, and the mighty one reduced long jewel slabs to fragments.
Passage 18
नखैर्विदारयामास वल्लरीवृन्दमण्डपान्। समूलमुत्पाटितवान् दीर्घशाखावतो द्रुमान्॥१८॥
With his claws he tore apart pavilions formed by masses of creepers and uprooted long-branched trees completely.
Passage 19
तरूणां भज्यमानानां पततां च महीतले। समभूद्दारुणः शब्दो निर्घातरवभीषणः॥१९॥
As trees broke and fell upon the earth, a dreadful sound arose, terrifying like the crash of thunder.
Passage 20
दशदिक्षु प्रचिक्षेप भङ्क्त्वा भङ्क्त्वा महीरुहाम्। शाखाः फलदलोपेताः कुसुमस्तवकाचिताः॥२०॥
Breaking them repeatedly, he hurled the trees' branches into the ten directions, laden with fruit, leaves, and clusters of flowers.
Passage 21
आकीर्णा सा मही पुष्पस्तवकैः पल्लवैः फलैः। द्यौश्च द्रुमवनोड्डीनैः पक्षिभिर्घोरनादिभिः॥२१॥
The earth was strewn with flower clusters, shoots, and fruit, while the sky filled with harshly crying birds driven from the woodland.
Passage 22
तरुभ्यो भज्यमानेभ्यः कम्पितेभ्यो हनूमता। उड्डीयन्त विहगाः स्थानभ्रंशसुदुःखिताः॥२२॥
Birds flew from the trees Hanumān broke and shook, deeply distressed at losing their dwelling places.
Passage 23
रटन्तः कटुनिर्घोषमपश्यन्तश्च विश्रमम्। छत्राकारतयोपेता बभ्रमुर्व्योम्नि संततम्॥२३॥
Crying harshly and finding nowhere to rest, they wheeled continuously through the sky in formations like parasols. The Garden Guards Rally
Passage 24
अथोदतिष्ठन्त ततो राक्षसा वनरक्षकाः। अक्षादयस्तीव्ररोषलोहिताक्षाः परः शताः॥२४॥
Then the rākṣasa garden guards rose up—Akṣa and hundreds of others, their eyes red with fierce anger.
Passage 25
आः कोऽयमखिलं वेगान्मथ्नाति विपुलं वनम्। अस्मासु किल जीवत्सु स्वामी येषां दशाननः॥२५॥
“Ah! Who is this violently churning the whole vast garden while we still live, whose master is ten-headed Rāvaṇa?
Passage 26
किं नो वक्ष्यति भग्नेऽस्मिन् वने सुविपुले प्रभुः। हेलानिर्जितदिक्चक्रो बली लङ्कापुरीश्वरः॥२६॥
“What will our powerful lord of Laṅkā, who effortlessly conquered the circle of directions, say when this vast garden is destroyed?
Passage 27
अहो अयं कपिः कश्चिल्लुनाति खलु नो वनम्। नानाजातिलताव्रातसंवीततरुपुष्कलम्॥२७॥
“See, some monkey is indeed cutting down our garden, abundant with trees wrapped in masses of vines of many kinds.
Passage 28
अहो इयमभूद्धानिर्महती स्वामिनोऽस्य नः। महायासेन निष्पन्नं महाद्रविणेन च॥२८॥
“What a great loss this is to our master and to us! It was created through immense labor and enormous wealth.
Passage 29
हीयते सर्वमेतद्धि कपिनाऽऽलोडितं वनम्। संतानकल्पमन्दारपारिजातद्रुमान्वितम्॥२९॥
“All this garden, filled with santāna, kalpa, mandāra, and pārijāta trees, is being ruined and churned up by the monkey.
Passage 30
हरिचन्दनसंशोभिस्वर्गानीतेन्द्रवैभवम्। रोपितं बहुकालेन नश्यतीदं किलाधुना॥३०॥
“Resplendent with yellow sandalwood and possessing Indra's splendor brought from heaven, it was planted over a long time and is now being destroyed.
Passage 31
अहो रे राक्षसभटाः सर्वैः संहत्य नन्वसौ। वध्यतां वध्यतामाशु कपिरालोडितारविः॥३१॥
“Rākṣasa warriors! Unite against him. Kill him, kill him quickly—the monkey whose uproar has churned the garden!”
Passage 32
इत्युक्त्वाक्षमुखा वीरा राक्षसास्तेऽतिरोषणाः। निपेतुः संहताः सर्वे वायुसूनौ महाबले॥३२॥
Speaking thus, those fiercely enraged rākṣasa heroes led by Akṣa massed together and rushed upon the mighty son of the Wind.
Passage 33
आत्तातिदीर्घपरिघाः खड्गहस्तास्तथापरे। अन्ये मुद्गरहस्ताश्च धनुर्बाणधराः परे॥३३॥
Some carried exceedingly long iron clubs, others held swords, others mallets, and still others bows and arrows.
Passage 34
नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः समुत्तस्थुर्यथास्थिताः। निपेतुः कपिराजेऽस्मिन् स्वामिभीता निशाचराः॥३४॥
Armed with many weapons, they rose from their stations. Afraid of their master, the night-roamers charged the monkey chief.
Passage 35
आलोडितं वनं कृत्स्नं तावत्तेन बलीयसा। उत्प्लुत्योत्प्लुत्य विटपश्रेणीषु परिपातिना॥३५॥
Meanwhile the mighty Hanumān, repeatedly springing and racing among the rows of branches, continued to churn the entire garden.
Passage 36
यत्रैवायान्ति रक्षांसि तत उत्प्लुत्य सत्वरम्। अन्यतो भूय निखिलान् बभञ्ज वनभूरुहान्॥३६॥
Whenever the rākṣasas approached, he quickly leapt away and broke all the garden trees elsewhere.
Passage 37
श्रुत्वा वनस्य कदनं दारुणाज्ञो दशाननः। अक्षादिभ्यो राक्षसेभ्यश्चुकोप क्षुभितान्तरः॥३७॥
Hearing of the garden's destruction, harsh-commanding ten-headed Rāvaṇa became inwardly agitated and angry with Akṣa and the other rākṣasas.
Passage 38
हन्यतां हन्यतामेष हतो यातु न चाक्षतः। इत्यादिदेश तानक्षप्रमुखान् वनरक्षकान्॥३८॥
“Kill him, kill him! Let him depart dead, not unscathed,” he commanded the garden guards headed by Akṣa.
Passage 39
ते स्वामिना दिष्टतमा निशाचरा बलोद्धता भूरितमाख्यातिनः। प्रजह्रुरेनं परिघैश्च मुद्गरैः सतोमरैश्चापि शरैः करेरितैः॥३९॥
Those night-roamers, mightily emboldened and renowned, thus commanded by their master, struck Hanumān with iron clubs, mallets, spears, and arrows launched by hand.
