Chapter context and opening material

Hanumān searches Rāvaṇa's vast pleasure garden tree by tree, admiring its mountain-fed streams, flowering bowers, jeweled pools, birds, music, and golden enclosures. In the Aśoka grove he finds Sītā beneath a flowering kankeli tree, wasted by separation yet still radiant. A long sequence of images measures her sorrow against moonlight veiled by darkness, a flame dimmed by smoke, a lake dried by summer, and a forest without rain. Hearing her repeatedly ask Trijaṭā for news of Rāma, Hanumān becomes certain of her identity, descends from the tree, bows, and stands before her with joined palms. Rāvaṇa's Great Garden
