Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— अथ प्रातः समुत्थाय तावुभौ कृतमङ्गलौ। शिबिकामारुरुहतुः कपिराजरघूद्वहौ॥१॥
Brahmā said: The next morning, after the auspicious rites had been performed for them, the monkey king and the scion of Raghu mounted a palanquin together.
Passage 2
अग्रेसरैः कपिवरैः सार्द्धं सुविहितोत्सवैः। विप्राणां जयघोषैश्च दीर्घदुन्दुभिनिःस्वनैः॥२॥
The foremost monkeys went before them in a splendidly arranged celebration, amid the brāhmaṇas' cries of victory and the long reverberation of kettledrums.
Passage 3
अन्तःपुरचरीभिस्तौ कान्ताभिस्तारया सह। कृतप्रस्थानतिलकौ मुक्ताक्षतयुतालिकौ॥३॥
The lovely women of the inner apartments, together with Tārā, placed departure tilakas upon the two, adorning their brows with pearls and unbroken rice.
Passage 4
अन्तःपुरचरस्त्रीणां जयघोषैः कृतोत्सवौ। जालमार्गनिविष्टाभिर्वीक्ष्यमाणौ च सादरम्॥४॥
The women's cries of victory filled the inner apartments with celebration, and from the lattice openings they gazed respectfully upon the two as they departed.
Passage 5
प्रचेलतुः प्रमुदितौ राजमार्गगतौ च तौ। वीक्षितौ पुरकान्ताभिः सादरं पुरुषर्षभौ॥५॥
Those two foremost men set out joyfully along the royal road while the women of the city looked upon them with reverence.
Passage 6
दधिदूर्वाक्षतक्षेपकृतप्रस्थानमङ्गलौ। तूर्यस्वनकृतोत्साहौ चामरद्वयवीजितौ॥६॥
Their departure was blessed by the casting of curds, sacred grass, and unbroken rice. The music of instruments stirred their spirits, and a pair of yak-tail fans waved over them.
Passage 7
अनुयायिकपिप्रवीरहस्तोद्धृतसत्काञ्चनमौक्तिकातपत्रौ। पुरवासिभिरात्तमङ्गलार्थैः शकुनावेक्षणमोदमानचित्तौ॥७॥
Fine parasols of gold and pearls were raised in the hands of heroic attendant monkeys. The townspeople carried auspicious offerings, and the hearts of the two rejoiced at the favorable omens they saw.
Passage 8
ताराद्यन्तःपुरस्त्रीणामुत्तीर्णौ नयनाध्वनः। विदापयन्त्यवनुगान् सुस्निग्धान् पुरवासिनः॥८॥
Passing beyond the range of vision of Tārā and the other women of the inner apartments, they took leave of the deeply affectionate townspeople who had followed them.
Passage 9
महता कपिसैन्येन साकं संहृष्टमानसौ। ततो जग्मतुरध्वानं माल्यवद्गिरियायिनौ॥९॥
With delighted hearts, accompanied by a vast monkey army, the two then took the road leading to Mount Mālyavat.
Passage 10
गाहमानौ पथि गिरीन् वनानि गहनानि च। सेनासंचारतुच्छोदा नदीश्च क्षतरोधसः॥१०॥
Along the way they penetrated mountains and dense forests and crossed rivers whose waters had been made shallow and whose banks had been broken by the army's passage. The Journey to Mount Mālyavat
Passage 11
लङ्घमानौ कृतजवौ शृण्वन्तौ पक्षिणां रुतम्। वीक्षमाणौ पुष्करिणीः संफुल्लाम्बुजकाननाः॥११॥
Moving swiftly onward, they listened to the calls of birds and beheld lotus pools filled with groves of fully blossomed lotuses.
Passage 12
हंससारसचक्राह्वनिनादमुदिताशयौ। विश्रमन्तौ क्वचित्पुण्यस्रोतसां सरितां तटे॥१२॥
Their hearts delighted by the cries of swans, cranes, and cakravāka birds, they sometimes rested on the banks of rivers whose currents were holy.
Passage 13
क्वचिद्द्रुमतले चारुशीतलच्छायशालिनि। जवात्पन्थानमुत्तीर्य माल्यवन्तमुपेयतुः॥१३॥
At times they rested beneath a tree rich in lovely, cooling shade. Swiftly completing the road, they reached Mount Mālyavat.
Passage 14
यत्रास्ते जगदीशानः स्वयं रघुकुलेश्वरः। प्रतीक्षमाणः सौमित्रेर्मार्गं विनिहितेक्षणः॥१४॥
There the Lord of the universe, the sovereign of Raghu's line himself, sat with his gaze fixed upon the road, awaiting Saumitri.
Passage 15
तत्र सर्वेऽप्युपाजग्मुः कपयो जातकौतुकाः। श्रीरामदर्शनश्रद्धापुलकाञ्चितविग्रहाः॥१५॥
All the monkeys approached him there, filled with eager wonder, their bodies bristling through their devotion to the sight of Śrī Rāma. The Monkey Chiefs Behold Rāma
Passage 16
स तत्र नीलोत्पलचारुविग्रहः समाश्रितः कोमलदर्भसंस्तरे। पर्यङ्कबद्धासन आत्मयोगभृत् स्वस्थो दधद्वल्कलचीरवाससी॥१६॥
Lovely in form like a blue lotus, he sat there upon a soft bed of darbha grass, his legs folded in the cross-legged posture. Absorbed in his own yoga and established in himself, he wore garments of bark and coarse cloth.
Passage 17
सुफुल्लराजीवसमानलोचनो नितान्तमाजानुविशालदोर्द्वयः। अलंकृतस्तापसवेषसुश्रिया तडित्पिशङ्गाभजटाकलापभृत्॥१७॥
His eyes resembled fully opened lotuses, and his two broad arms reached down to his knees. Adorned by the beauty of an ascetic's dress, he bore a mass of matted locks tawny like lightning.
Passage 18
तुङ्गोत्तमाङ्गाहितवन्यपल्लवप्रसूनराजीमुकुटो मनोहरः। कैलासनाथोपमितोऽप्रमेयसद्गुणाढ्य आस्ते रघुवंशकेसरी॥१८॥
Upon his lofty head rested a charming crown formed of rows of wild leaves and flowers. Resembling the Lord of Kailāsa and endowed with immeasurable noble qualities, the lion of Raghu's line sat there.
Passage 19
तं दृष्टवन्तः सकलाः कपीश्वराः सुग्रीवमुख्या विहिताञ्जलिपुटाः। सौमित्रिणा ते च सहात्मबन्धुना प्रणम्य पेतुः किल दण्डवद्भुवि॥१९॥
Seeing him, all the monkey chiefs headed by Sugrīva joined their palms. Together with their kinsman Saumitri, they bowed and fell upon the ground like staffs.
Passage 20
पुनः समुत्थाय पुरो जगत्पतेस्तथैव बद्धाञ्जलयः प्लवङ्गमाः। आदेशसापेक्षतया कति क्षणान् सर्वेऽपि तस्थुर्विहितादरोत्सवाः॥२०॥
Rising again before the Lord of the universe, the monkeys remained with palms still joined. For several moments they all stood reverently and joyfully, awaiting his command. Rāma Welcomes His Friends
Passage 21
जवाद् रामोऽथ सुग्रीवं परिरभ्य सुहृत्तमम्। लक्ष्मणं च यथास्थानं कपीन् समुपवेशयन्॥२१॥
Rāma at once embraced Sugrīva, his dearest friend, and seated Lakṣmaṇa and the monkeys in their proper places.
Passage 22
तत्र श्रीरामसुग्रीवावेकासनमधिष्ठितौ। अङ्गदश्चात्मनिकटं स्थापितो रघुमौलिना॥२२॥
There Śrī Rāma and Sugrīva occupied a single seat, while the crown of the Raghus placed Aṅgada close beside himself.
Passage 23
कृतार्थं मन्यमानाः स्वं सर्वेऽपि कपिसत्तमाः। ददृशुश्चिरसोत्तर्षा मुखचन्द्रं जगत्प्रभोः॥२३॥
All the foremost monkeys considered themselves fulfilled and, after their long yearning, gazed upon the moonlike face of the Lord of the universe.
Passage 24
अन्योन्यसंकथाभ्याससुखितान्योन्यमानसौ। कपीश्वररघुश्रेष्ठौ विप्रयुक्तौ चिरेण तौ॥२४॥
Long separated, the lord of the monkeys and the foremost Raghu delighted one another's hearts by conversing together again and again.
Passage 25
सानन्दमासाञ्चक्राते वीक्षमाणौ परस्परम्। परस्परगुणश्लाघाप्रमोदितपरस्परौ॥२५॥
They sat joyfully looking at one another, each delighting the other by praising the other's virtues. Rāma Praises Lakṣmaṇa and Sugrīva
Passage 26
अथ लक्ष्मणमाहेदं रामः संफुल्ललोचनः। आनीतः साधु सौमित्रे सुग्रीवोऽयं सखा मम॥२६॥
Then Rāma, his eyes opened wide with joy, said to Lakṣmaṇa, “Well done, Saumitri! You have brought Sugrīva, this friend of mine.
Passage 27
त्वां विना क इदं कार्यं कर्तुं शक्तो महामते। आनन्दितस्त्वयास्म्यद्य मन्मित्रमुखदर्शिना॥२७॥
“Great-minded one, who other than you could have accomplished this task? Today you have delighted me by enabling me to see my friend's face.
Passage 28
चक्रवर्ती पुनरयं कपीनां भूरितेजसाम्। विक्रमी बलवांस्त्यागी सखा मे सुमहोन्नतः॥२८॥
“Moreover, he is emperor of the immensely powerful monkeys. Valiant, strong, generous, and greatly exalted, he is my friend.
Passage 29
यस्याज्ञावशगाः कीशाः कोटिशो यूथपेश्वराः। किष्किन्धापुरराजोऽसौ क्व मां स्मरतु तापसम्॥२९॥
“Tens of millions of monkey lords and commanders obey his order. He is the king of Kiṣkindhā; why should one such as he remember me, an ascetic?
Passage 30
वनवासिनमापत्सु मग्नं घोरतरास्वयम्। यदि मां संस्मरेज्जातु कृतार्थः स्यामसंशयम्॥३०॥
“Yet if he should ever remember me—a forest-dweller submerged in these most terrible calamities—I would without doubt consider myself fulfilled.
Passage 31
स चेदयं स्वयं प्राप्तः कृपया मम कीशराट्। तर्हि जानामि सौमित्रे निकटेऽभ्युदयो मम॥३१॥
“Since this monkey king has now come to me of his own kindness, Saumitri, I know that my good fortune is near.” Sugrīva Offers His Entire Following
Passage 32
इति वादिनमाक्षिप्य रामचन्द्रं कपीश्वरः। उवाच संस्मृताशेषतत्कृतोपकृतिबुधः॥३२॥
The monkey lord interrupted Rāmacandra as he spoke. Fully conscious of every benefit Rāma had bestowed upon him, Sugrīva replied:
Passage 33
अजापि दुर्लभा यस्य स ते करुणया प्रभो। द्वारोपान्ते घूर्णमानमत्तमातङ्गमण्डलः॥३३॥
“Lord, through your compassion one attains a majesty difficult even for Aja to obtain, with herds of rutting elephants swaying beside his gate.
Passage 34
चिरं जयति वीरेन्द्र साम्राज्यपदभोगभुक्। निदर्शनं तु तत्रायमहमेव न संशयः॥३४॥
“Such a heroic sovereign triumphs for a long time, enjoying imperial rank. I myself am the proof of that; there is no doubt.
Passage 35
स्पर्धते भवता यस्तु दैवापहृतचेतनः। आरात्कृतान्तमहिषघण्टाघोषं शृणोति सः॥३५॥
“Whoever, his reason stolen by fate, dares compete with you already hears close at hand the ringing bell upon Death's buffalo.
Passage 36
निदर्शनं तु तत्राभून्मम ज्येष्ठः स दुर्मतिः। त्वद्दासस्य विपक्षोऽपि किं पुनस्ते रघूद्वह॥३६॥
“My ill-minded elder brother was the proof of that: he opposed even your servant—how much more perilous would it be to oppose you, scion of Raghu?
Passage 37
अयमहमिह संगतोऽस्मि दासस्तव रघुपुङ्गव साकमात्मवर्ग्यैः। त्रिजगति किल यच्चिकीर्षितं ते द्रुततरमादिश तन्ममाद्य कर्तुम्॥३७॥
“Here I am, your servant, come before you, foremost of the Raghus, together with all my followers. Whatever you wish to accomplish in the three worlds, command me at once to carry it out today.”
