Passage 1
कपय ऊचुः— स्थीयतामिह विश्रम्य श्रीरामानुज सादरम्। प्राप्तोऽसि स्वस्य भवनमिति चेतसि चिन्तय॥१॥
The monkeys said: “Śrī Rāma's younger brother, please remain here and rest at ease. Consider in your heart that you have arrived at your own home.
Passage 2
यावत्स बुध्यते सुप्तः स्वामी नो भवतां सखा। किष्किन्धानगरीराजः सुग्रीवः कपिराट् प्रभो॥२॥
“Lord, wait only until our sleeping master awakens—Sugrīva, king of the monkeys, ruler of Kiṣkindhā, and your friend.
Passage 3
श्रीराममात्मनो मित्रं कथमेषोऽतिवर्त्स्यति। यदाज्ञापयिता देवः कर्तासौ स्वयमेव तत्॥३॥
“How could he transgress against Śrī Rāma, his own friend? Whatever the divine Lord commands, Sugrīva himself will do.
Passage 4
यस्मिन् प्रसादो विहितो भवद्भिः सिंहविक्रमैः। तस्मिन् कृपापराधेऽपि न क्रोधं कर्तुमर्हथ॥४॥
“You lion-like heroes bestowed your grace upon him; you should not become angry with him even for this small lapse regarding that favor.
Passage 5
सर्वे वयं कपिभटा भवदीयाः स्म लक्ष्मण। आज्ञया रामचन्द्रस्य नापेक्षन्ते ह्यसूनपि॥५॥
“Lakṣmaṇa, all of us monkey warriors belong to you. At Rāmacandra's command we would not spare even our lives.
Passage 6
कश्च युष्मासु कुर्वीत कैतवं सौहृदापहम्। निष्कैतवेषूपकृतिप्रमोदितसुहृत्सु च॥६॥
“Who could practice deceit that destroys friendship against guileless friends like you, friends gladdened by rendering aid?
Passage 7
शीघ्रं विजित्य तं पापं रक्षसामधिपं खलम्। राघवेन्द्रस्त्रिभुवने यशो विस्तारयिष्यति॥७॥
“Rāghavendra will swiftly conquer that wicked sinner, the lord of the rākṣasas, and spread his glory throughout the three worlds.”
Passage 8
इति रामानुजं कीशाः सान्त्वयित्वा महाधियः। तारायै कथयामासुस्तदागमनमञ्जसा॥८॥
Having thus calmed Rāma's younger brother, the wise monkey chiefs immediately told Tārā of his arrival. Tārā Awakens Sugrīva
Passage 9
ज्ञात्वा सा वारुणीमत्तं सुग्रीवं कपिभूपतिम्। कपिभिः कारयामास सौमित्रेः सत्कृतिं मुहुः॥९॥
Knowing that monkey king Sugrīva was intoxicated with vāruṇī wine, Tārā repeatedly had the monkeys render honor to Saumitri.
Passage 10
अथ सा सुमहाप्राज्ञा पतिं शुद्धान्तसंस्थितम्। उपयातवती तारा वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्॥१०॥
Then profoundly wise Tārā approached her husband in the inner apartments and spoke these words.
Passage 11
सावधानो भव प्राज्ञ प्राप्तस्ते सुहृदोऽनुजः। सुमित्रातनयो वीरो लक्ष्मणः शुभलक्षणः॥११॥
“Wise king, become attentive. Your friend's younger brother has arrived—the heroic and auspiciously marked Lakṣmaṇa, son of Sumitrā.”
Passage 12
सौमित्रिमागतं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः कपिराट् ततः। अजहात् तत्क्षणेनैव सुगाढं वारुणीमदम्॥१२॥
Hearing that Saumitri had come, Sugrīva, king of the monkeys, instantly cast off his deep intoxication from the wine.
Passage 13
सहर्षोत्फुल्लनयनो लक्ष्मणस्य दिदृक्षया। सम्मार्ज्य सलिलैर्भूयः शीतलैर्नयने मुखम्॥१३॥
His eyes opening joyfully in his eagerness to see Lakṣmaṇa, he repeatedly washed his eyes and face with cool water.
Passage 14
सावधानोऽथ सुग्रीवः सभामण्डपमाविशत्। यत्र स्थितः स वीरेन्द्रो लक्ष्मणः स्वामिकार्यकृत्॥१४॥
Now fully alert, Sugrīva entered the assembly pavilion where heroic Lakṣmaṇa stood carrying out his master's work.
Passage 15
प्रह्वः स तच्चरणयोः प्रणनाम कृतादरः। बद्धाञ्जलिपुटो धीमांस्तस्थौ तस्य पुरोगतः॥१५॥
Bowing low, wise Sugrīva reverently prostrated at Lakṣmaṇa's feet and stood before him with palms joined. Lakṣmaṇa Delivers Rāma's Rebuke
Passage 16
उपवेश्याथ सौमित्रिस्तं भक्तिभरसन्ततम्। सभाभङ्गमिदं पश्चादुवाचार्यनिदेशतः॥१६॥
Saumitri seated Sugrīva, who was filled with devotion, and then, in accordance with his noble brother's instruction, spoke this assembly-breaking rebuke.
Passage 17
यस्य पादाम्बुजद्वन्द्वसेवनात्त्वामुपाययौ। किष्किन्धापुरराज्यश्रीः सति वालिनि दुर्लभा॥१७॥
“By serving the pair of lotus feet of the one through whom you obtained it, the royal splendor of Kiṣkindhā came to you—something unattainable while Vāli lived.
Passage 18
तस्मिन्नार्येण निहते बलशालिनि वालिनि। सेवसे तामविरतं राज्यश्रियमकण्टकाम्॥१८॥
“Now that noble Rāma has slain mighty Vāli, you continually enjoy that royal fortune free from every thorn.
Passage 19
भुङ्क्षे तारां च पद्माक्षीं सह राज्यश्रिया तया। विस्मृतश्च स वीरेन्द्रः कानने निवसंस्त्वया॥१९॥
“You enjoy lotus-eyed Tārā together with that royal splendor, while you have forgotten the heroic lord who dwells in the forest.
Passage 20
विप्रयुक्तः स्त्रिया प्रियया त्यक्तराज्यो गुरोर्गिरा। जिघांसुः स्वामिनीचोरं तं पापं दशकन्धरम्॥२०॥
“Separated from his beloved wife and deprived of his kingdom by his father's word, he seeks to slay the sinful ten-headed thief who stole his lady.
Passage 21
एतत्तेऽनुचितं प्राज्ञ यत्तद्विधासघातनम्। मित्रे कैतवमालम्ब्य को नु प्राप्नोतु मङ्गलम्॥२१॥
“Wise king, it is improper for you to injure a man of that kind. Who can attain good fortune by resorting to deceit against a friend?
Passage 22
आपद्गतः सखा यस्य दुःखैः सीदति सन्ततम्। स भुङ्क्ते चेत्स्वयं भोगांस्तदधिकं तदभोगभोजनम्॥२२॥
“When one's friend has fallen into calamity and continually languishes in sorrow, enjoying pleasures oneself becomes an even greater tasting of misery.” Sugrīva and Tārā Honor Lakṣmaṇa
Passage 23
लक्ष्मणोदीरितमिदं वाक्यमाकर्ण्य कीशराट्। हसित्वा परिरेभे तं रामानुजमकैतवः॥२३॥
Hearing these words uttered by Lakṣmaṇa, the guileless monkey king smiled and embraced Rāma's younger brother.
Passage 24
निनाय तमथो धीरः शुद्धान्तःपुरमात्मनः। तत्र योषिद्गणैः सार्धमुपतस्थौ तमूर्जितम्॥२४॥
The steadfast king then led mighty Lakṣmaṇa into his own inner apartments and attended him there together with the women.
Passage 25
तारा तारापतिमुखी हर्षोत्फुल्लविलोचना। तुष्टाव भूरिविक्रान्तं सुमित्रातनयं सती॥२५॥
Chaste Tārā, her face like the moon and her eyes opened wide with joy, praised Sumitrā's immensely valiant son.
Passage 26
आनर्च विविधैर्दिव्यैरुपचारैरुदारधीः। तस्याः प्रीत्या सुसन्तुष्ट आसीद् रामानुजो यथा॥२६॥
The noble-minded lady honored him with many divine courtesies, and Rāma's younger brother became deeply pleased by her affection.
Passage 27
उवाच च महाप्राज्ञा प्रसादसुमुखं ततः। सुस्वागतं ते सौमित्रे सुखमास्ते रघूद्वहः॥२७॥
Then the profoundly wise Tārā spoke graciously to him: “Saumitri, you are most welcome. Is the scion of Raghu well?
Passage 28
गिरौ माल्यवति श्रीमान् भृशमानन्दयन् मुनीन्। प्रसाददृष्टिरस्मासु कच्चिदस्ति यथा पुरा॥२८॥
“Does the illustrious Lord remain upon Mount Mālyavat, greatly delighting the sages? Does his gracious gaze still rest upon us as it did before?”
Passage 29
इत्थं स शुद्धान्तगतः कपीशितुस्तेनार्चितः सादरया च तारया। उवास तां रात्रिमभीष्टयोजनस्तत्रैव सख्येन भृशं प्रमोदितः॥२९॥
Thus admitted into the monkey king's inner apartments and honored by Sugrīva and attentive Tārā, Lakṣmaṇa remained there that night, his desired purpose arranged and his heart greatly gladdened by their friendship.
