Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— अथ सुग्रीवमानीय मङ्गलध्वनिपूर्वकम्। किष्किन्धानगरीराज्ये स्थापयामास राघवः॥१॥
Brahmā said: Rāma then brought Sugrīva forward amid auspicious sounds and established him upon the throne of the city of Kiṣkindhā.
Passage 2
तोयैः कपिवरानीतैर्नानातीर्थसमुद्भवैः। अभिषेकं समातेने सुग्रीवस्य रघूद्वहः॥२॥
With waters brought by the foremost monkeys from many sacred fords, the scion of Raghu performed Sugrīva's royal consecration.
Passage 3
पताकाध्वजकेतूनां वासोभिर्बहुवर्णकैः। तोरणैर्नवपर्णालिकुसुमस्रक्समुद्भवैः॥३॥
There were banners, flags, pennants, many-colored cloths, and gateways fashioned from fresh ranks of leaves and flower garlands.
Passage 4
विचित्रवर्णैर्वसनखण्डश्रेणिविराजितैः। रम्भास्तम्भैः पूर्णकुम्भैः फलपल्लवशालिभिः॥४॥
The city shone with rows of variegated cloth, pillars made from plantain trunks, and full ceremonial jars bearing fruit and tender leaves.
Passage 5
मार्जनैश्चन्दनालेपसुगन्धिजलसेचनैः। तूर्यनिःस्वानघोषैश्च वेदघोषैर्द्विजन्मनाम्॥५॥
Its streets were swept, anointed with sandal paste, and sprinkled with fragrant water, while instruments resounded and twice-born priests chanted the Veda.
Passage 6
शृङ्गारितैर्नरैर्नारीनिकरैर्हर्षसंयुतैः। किष्किन्धानगरी सर्वा तदानीं समलङ्कृता॥६॥
Adorned men and joyful companies of women filled Kiṣkindhā, and the entire city was splendidly decorated.
Passage 7
निनाय सानुजं रामं पूर्वं कपिकुलाग्रणीः। विचित्रक्षौमपट्टाभिर्मणिकाञ्चनवर्षणैः॥७॥
The leader of the monkey race first conducted Rāma and his younger brother through displays of fine and varied silks and showers of jewels and gold.
Passage 8
जयघोषैश्च परितः सूतमागधवन्दिनाम्। निर्मञ्छनैर्बहुविधैर्मणिमाणिक्यहेमभिः॥८॥
All around, heralds, bards, and panegyrists proclaimed victory, while many ceremonial offerings of gems, rubies, and gold were waved before them.
Passage 9
रामं सौमित्रिमेवापि जग्राह परमादृतः। अभ्यर्हणैः पृथग्दत्तैः पाद्यार्घ्यादिभिरुत्तमैः॥९॥
With the highest reverence, Sugrīva received Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa separately with excellent honors, including water for their feet and the traditional offering of welcome.
Passage 10
तारा तमग्रतो भूय निन्ये शुद्धान्तमध्यतः। दासीसखीगणैर्युक्ता भूयः पर्यचरच्च तम्॥१०॥
Tārā then led Rāma into the inner palace and, surrounded by her maids and companions, served him with renewed devotion. Tārā Praises Rāma's Grace
Passage 11
उवाच हृष्टहृदया सानुजं तं गृहागतम्। अद्य मे परमं भाग्यं प्रभो त्वन्मुखदर्शनात्॥११॥
Delighted at heart, she addressed Rāma, who had entered her home with his younger brother: “Lord, today I possess supreme good fortune because I behold your face.
Passage 12
यत्पुरा वाञ्छितमभूच्चिरेण रघुपुङ्गव। तदद्य चक्षुषा लब्धं श्रीराम तव दर्शनम्॥१२॥
“Foremost of the Raghus, what I had long desired before has today been gained by my own eyes: the sight of you, Śrī Rāma.
Passage 13
अयं चानुगृहीतस्ते सख्येन कपियूथपः। सर्वकल्याणनिधिना सर्वसौख्यविधायिना॥१३॥
“This lord of the monkey hosts has been blessed with the friendship of you, the treasury of every good and bestower of all happiness.
Passage 14
अहो अत्यद्भुतं भाग्यं किष्किन्धायाः प्रियाकृते। या त्वत्पदाङ्कनिबहैर्भूषिता तीर्थपावनैः॥१४॥
“How astonishing is Kiṣkindhā's fortune, beloved Lord! It is adorned by the many imprints of your feet, which purify even sacred fords.
Passage 15
पुण्यक्षेत्रमभूदेषा तवागमनमात्रतः। स्नाने दाने जपे होमे सर्वत्राक्षयपुण्यदा॥१५॥
“By your mere arrival, this city has become a holy field that grants inexhaustible merit through bathing, charity, recitation, and sacrifice.
Passage 16
अहो कपीनां रघुप किं भाग्यमनुवर्ण्यते। ये पश्यन्ति दिवारात्रं त्वामानन्दवपुर्घनम्॥१६॥
“Scion of Raghu, how can the fortune of the monkeys be described? Day and night they behold you, the embodied fullness of bliss.
Passage 17
अहो वानरकान्तानां भागधेयमतुल्यतमम्। निर्मञ्छयन्ति याः प्राणान् संततं सानुजे त्वयि॥१७॥
“How incomparable is the fortune of the monkey women, who continually offer even their lives before you and your younger brother as a rite of loving protection!
Passage 18
त्वयासौ रोपितो राज्ये श्रीराम कपिनायकः। अनश्वरं पदं प्रायः प्राप्त इत्यनुलक्षये॥१८॥
“Śrī Rāma, because you have placed this monkey chief upon the throne, I regard him as having attained an almost imperishable station.
Passage 19
त्वया भृतानां रामेन्दो केन स्याद् रिक्तता भुवि। त्वया रिक्तीकृताश्चापि म्रियेरन् केन राघव॥१९॥
“Moonlike Rāma, how could those sustained by you lack anything in this world? And if deprived of you, Rāghava, by what could they continue to live?
Passage 20
दासः सखा सुहृद् भ्राता इत्यादिभिरभीष्टदः। आख्यानैरङ्किता लोका भवन्ति तव निर्भयाः॥२०॥
“The worlds are adorned with accounts of you granting cherished blessings as servant, friend, well-wisher, brother, and more; through them, people become fearless.
Passage 21
त्वत्पादपद्मं ये राम प्राप्ताः शरणमञ्जसा। कायेन मनसा वाचा तवास्मीति विजानते॥२१॥
“Those who sincerely take refuge at your lotus feet, Rāma, and know with body, mind, and speech, ‘I am yours,’
Passage 22
मृत्योरपि न ते प्रायो विभ्यतीश भवे नराः। इति ते को न शरणं प्राप्नुयाद्रामचन्द्रमः॥२२॥
“do not fear even death while in this world, Lord. Knowing this, who would not take refuge in you, Rāmacandra?” Rāma Consoles and Instructs Tārā
Passage 23
इत्युक्तवत्यां वै तस्यां देवः स्मितमुखाम्बुजः। अब्रवीत् करुणाधारः श्रीमान् कमललोचनः॥२३॥
When she had spoken thus, the glorious lotus-eyed Lord, foundation of compassion, answered with a smile upon his lotus face.
Passage 24
सुखं संवर्धते तारे त्वमतिन्दितगामिनि। तव श्रिया पुरमिदं सश्रीकमिति मन्महे॥२४॥
“May your happiness increase, Tārā, you whose conduct is beyond reproach. I regard this city as prosperous through your own splendor.
Passage 25
भजैनं चञ्चलापाङ्गि यः पुरा देवरस्तव। त्वदर्थे राज्यादधिकं सुचिरेणाभिलाषुकः॥२५॥
“Bright-eyed woman, accept this Sugrīva, who was formerly your husband's younger brother and who for a long time desired you even more than the kingdom.
Passage 26
मा शुचस्तं पतिं तन्वि परेतं देवयोगतः। आगमापायिनो भावान् संततं समनुस्मर॥२६॥
“Slender woman, do not grieve for the husband who has departed through the working of destiny. Continually remember that all conditions arise and pass away.
Passage 27
अनेन सह राज्येऽस्मिन्नजस्रं समधिष्ठिता। रञ्जयस्व प्रजाः सर्वाः शिक्षय स्वजनान् नयम्॥२७॥
“Remain established in this kingdom with Sugrīva, bring happiness to all the subjects, and instruct your own people in wise governance.
Passage 28
त्वया महिष्या महिते राज्येऽस्मिन् वीतकण्टके। स्थितोऽयमस्तु सुग्रीवो नयधर्मानुपालकः॥२८॥
“May Sugrīva, guided by policy and dharma, remain secure in this kingdom—freed from enemies and honored by you as its chief queen.
Passage 29
नित्यं समनुमोदन्तां कपयो ज्ञातयश्च वः। भातु प्रतिदिनं चैषा किष्किन्धा कपिराज्यभूः॥२९॥
“May the monkeys and all your kinsmen rejoice continually, and may Kiṣkindhā, seat of the monkey kingdom, shine more brightly every day.
Passage 30
एनं बोधय रम्भोरु त्वं किल ज्ञानकोविदा। यथा राज्यमदोन्मत्तो न मां सम्प्रति विस्मरेत्॥३०॥
“Lovely-thighed Tārā, you are skilled in wisdom; counsel Sugrīva so that, intoxicated by royal power, he does not now forget me.” Rāma Withdraws for the Monsoon
Passage 31
सुग्रीवं द्रुतमभिषिच्य राम इत्थं किष्किन्धाह्वयनगरीनिरीतिराज्ये। चातुर्मास्यमुपगतं निरीक्ष्य सद्यः शैलेन्द्रं समुपजगाम माल्यवन्तम्॥३१॥
Having swiftly consecrated Sugrīva and established him in the kingdom of the city called Kiṣkindhā, Rāma saw that the four months of the rainy season had arrived and immediately went to the great mountain Mālyavat.
