Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— वाली रामस्य बाणेन विद्धो हृदयमर्मणि। पपात सहसा भूमौ हा हतोऽस्मीति संव्रुवन्॥१॥
Brahmā said: Pierced by Rāma's arrow in the vital region of his heart, Vālin suddenly fell to the ground, crying, “Alas, I am slain!”
Passage 2
रटति स्म रणाङ्गणे कपीन्द्रः पतितः सम्प्रति मुक्तजीविताशः। अहमत्र परेण युध्यमानो ननु केनापि नरेण हा हतोऽस्मि॥२॥
Fallen on the battlefield and abandoning hope of life, the monkey king lamented: “I was fighting another here, yet some unknown man has struck me down—alas, I am slain!”
Passage 3
रटतोऽस्य रवं श्रुत्वा करुणो रघुनन्दनः। विनिन्दन्नात्मनः कर्म तत्रैव समुपागमत्॥३॥
Hearing his anguished cry, compassionate Rāma came to that place while reproaching his own deed.
Passage 4
निरीक्ष्य विद्धमर्माणमात्मबाणेन वालिनम्। सन्तेपेऽनुचितं कृत्वा रामो धर्मभृतां वरः॥४॥
Seeing Vālin struck in a vital place by his own arrow, Rāma, foremost among the upholders of dharma, burned with remorse for having acted improperly.
Passage 5
हा मया किमयं वीरः सुग्रीवेण रणाङ्गणे। युध्यमानो हतो मोहाद् विना मन्तुमकारणम्॥५॥
“Alas! Why did I rashly kill this hero without reflection or cause while he was fighting Sugrīva in the arena?
Passage 6
नापराद्धं ममानेन किंचिदप्यमितौजसा। सुग्रीवस्यैव शत्रुश्च वध्यस्तेनैव नान्यथा॥६॥
“This immeasurably powerful one committed no offense against me. He was Sugrīva's enemy and should have been killed by him alone, not otherwise.
Passage 7
अहं तु व्यर्थमेवास्य वधं कृत्वानुतप्तवान्। एतन्मेऽनुचितं कर्म विनिन्दिष्यन्ति धार्मिकाः॥७॥
“I have killed him needlessly and now repent. The righteous will condemn this improper deed of mine.”
Passage 8
इति शोचन्मुहुरयं काकुत्स्थः करुणानिधिः। तत्रैव सान्त्वितः साम्ना सुग्रीवानुजवालिभिः॥८॥
As compassionate Rāma repeatedly grieved in this way, Sugrīva, his younger brother, and the stricken Vālin gently consoled him there.
Passage 9
कपिभिश्चापि हनुमन्नलनीलाङ्गदादिभिः। अये त्वं रघुशार्दूल हृदा किमनुशोचसि॥९॥
Hanumān, Nala, Nīla, Aṅgada, and the other monkeys also said, “Tiger of Raghu's line, why do you grieve in your heart?
Passage 10
अकारणमसौ वीरो हत इत्यनुशोच मा। सुग्रीवेण सहाबद्धा मैत्र्येव न तु कारणम्॥१०॥
“Do not lament that this hero was killed without cause. Your established friendship with Sugrīva is itself sufficient cause.
Passage 11
तव मित्रं हि सुग्रीवस्तमसौ समराङ्गणे। पराबभूव दुष्टात्मा तस्येदं कर्मणः फलम्॥११॥
“Sugrīva is your friend, and this wicked one defeated him on the battlefield. His present fate is the fruit of that act.
Passage 12
अवाप स्वयमेवायं हतो यद्भवतेषुणा। किमकार्षीत्तपश्चायं म्रियमाणो ददर्श यत्॥१२॥
“By being struck with your arrow, he himself has gained a rare blessing. What austerity did he perform that he beholds you as he dies?
Passage 13
त्वां दुर्लभं योगिवरैः सद्यो मुक्तिमवाप्स्यति। हा हा रघुपते मूर्ध्नि धेह्यस्य चरणौ निजौ॥१३॥
“Beholding you, whom even the finest yogins find difficult to attain, he will win liberation at once. Lord of the Raghus, place your own feet upon his head!
Passage 14
नायं मृतो भाग्यनिधिः सुचिरं जीवितः प्रभो। त्वदीक्षाधौतशमलो यदन्ते त्वां गमिष्यति॥१४॥
“This treasury of good fortune has not truly died, Lord; he has truly lived, for at life's end your glance washes away his impurity and he will attain you.
Passage 15
अहो अस्य कपेर्भाग्यं त्वद्बाणस्पर्शमाप यत्। तेनैष धौतशमलो ध्रुवं यास्यति ते पदम्॥१५॥
“How great is this monkey's fortune that he received the touch of your arrow! His impurity cleansed by it, he will certainly reach your abode.” Vālin Seeks Rāma's Feet
Passage 16
हा काकुत्स्थकुलोत्तंस कोमलौ चरणाविमौ। निधेहि मम हृन्मूर्ध्नोर्नेत्रेषु कृपया प्रभो॥१६॥
Vālin said: “Crest-jewel of Kakutstha's line, mercifully place those tender feet upon my heart, my head, and my eyes, Lord.
Passage 17
हृद्येतौ मम संतापं भवसंज्ञं हरिष्यतः। मूर्ध्नो मे रत्नजोत्तंसशोभाये च भविष्यतः॥१७॥
“Upon my heart they will remove the torment called worldly existence, and upon my head they will shine more splendidly than a jeweled crown.
Passage 18
नेत्रयोर्मम रामेन्दो सुधावृष्टिं विधास्यतः। मम मृत्युरपि श्लाघ्यमिमां प्राप्तवतो दशाम्॥१८॥
“Upon my eyes, moonlike Rāma, they will pour a shower of nectar. Having reached this state, even my death is worthy of praise.
Passage 19
एकं तु तव पृच्छामि यदि नाथ न कुप्यसि। सुग्रीवमैत्रीहेतुस्ते को नाम रघुपुङ्गव॥१९॥
“If you are not displeased, Lord, I ask you one thing: foremost of the Raghus, what occasioned your friendship with Sugrīva?
Passage 20
जानामि राम सुग्रीवहेतोर्मामवधीः स्फुटम्। शोचसीत्थं हृदा यस्मादिति मे वद निश्चितम्॥२०॥
“Rāma, I plainly understand that you killed me for Sugrīva's sake, for otherwise you would not grieve so deeply. Tell me the reason with certainty.” Rāma Explains the Alliance
Passage 21
श्रीराम उवाच— प्रिया मेऽपहृता वाले रावणेन महौजसा। चिकीर्षुस्तद्वधं यत्नान्मित्राण्यन्वेषयाम्यहम्॥२१॥
Śrī Rāma said: “Vālin, mighty Rāvaṇa abducted my beloved. Desiring to kill him, I have earnestly sought allies.
Passage 22
एकमासादितं मित्रं सुग्रीवाख्यमिदं मया। यद्धेतोस्त्वं हतो वालिन् सहस्रगजदोर्बलः॥२२॥
“I found this one ally named Sugrīva. For his sake, Vālin, you—whose arms have the strength of a thousand elephants—were slain.
Passage 23
स्थापयिष्याम्यहं चैनं किष्किन्धाराज्यसम्पदि। रावणस्य वधे चैष ममोपकृतिमेष्यति॥२३॥
“I shall establish him in the sovereignty and prosperity of Kiṣkindhā, and he in turn will aid me in killing Rāvaṇa.
Passage 24
अनेकपद्मसंख्यातकपीनामधिपो ह्ययम्। सेनासंघटनं तैश्च मम सम्प्रग्विधास्यति॥२४॥
“He is lord of monkeys numbering many quadrillions, and he will now assemble them into an army for me.
Passage 25
इत्यस्य मैत्रीहेतुस्ते मया सम्यङ् निरूपितः। त्वद्वधस्य च वै हेतुरेष एव न संशयः॥२५॥
“I have thus fully explained to you the reason for this friendship. This alone is also the reason for your death; there is no doubt.” Vālin's Last Boast and Final Absorption
Passage 26
इति रामोदितं श्रुत्वा कपीनामधिभूर्वचः। प्राह सन् म्रियमाणोऽपि हेलागणितरावणः॥२६॥
Hearing Rāma's words, the lord of the monkeys—who regarded Rāvaṇa with contempt—spoke even as he was dying.
Passage 27
अहो एतावन्तमर्थं पुरस्कृत्य रघूद्वह। सुग्रीवमैत्रीहेतोर्मामवधीः किं दयानिधे॥२७॥
“Scion of Raghu, ocean of compassion, did you kill me and befriend Sugrīva merely to accomplish this purpose?
Passage 28
योऽयं निजैककक्षायां निधाय दशकन्धरम्। आनैषमात्मभवने क्षणं क्रीडनकोपमम्॥२८॥
“I once tucked ten-headed Rāvaṇa beneath a single arm and carried him to my own palace like a toy.
Passage 29
तमहं रघुशार्दूल त्वदाज्ञामात्रतो बलात्। किं नानेष्यं निबध्यैव व्यर्थस्तत्र परिश्रमः॥२९॥
“Tiger of Raghu's line, would I not have bound him and brought him here at your mere command? All this effort was unnecessary.
Passage 30
श्रुत्वा रघुपतिस्तस्य वचोऽतिबलसूचकम्। विसिस्मिये हृदात्यर्थं दृष्ट्वा भूयस्तु जाननम्॥३०॥
Hearing Vālin's words, which revealed his extraordinary strength, Rāma marveled deeply in his heart as he looked once more upon him.
Passage 31
अथ रघुपतिपादस्पर्शधौताखिलाघः कपिपरिवृढ उच्चैः संविशुद्धान्तरात्मा। तदमलमुखचन्द्रालोकपीयूषधारासुहितनयनपद्मस्तेषु पश्यत्सु वालिः॥३१॥
Then Vālin, lord of monkeys, had every sin washed away by the touch of Rāma's feet and became utterly pure within. As all looked on, his lotus eyes drank their fill from the stream of nectar issuing from the vision of Rāma's stainless moonlike face.
Passage 32
बहिर्दर्शोद्धतप्रणयपरिपृष्टामलमनाः क्षणादन्तर्ध्यानप्रभवसुखधारास्वदनकृत्। समीपस्थः सीतारमणपदयोः क्षेमपदयोः परपुंसप्रेम्णा पटुतरमयुङ्क्त स्वहृदयम्॥३२॥
His stainless mind, fulfilled by the love awakened through the outward vision, instantly began tasting the stream of bliss born from inward meditation. Remaining beside the all-auspicious feet of Sītā's beloved, he fixed his heart upon the Supreme Person with an ever more intense love.
Passage 33
अथ न्यमीलन्नयने क्षणेन श्रीरामचन्द्रे पुरुषोत्तमेऽस्मिन्। निलीनसर्वेन्द्रियवृत्तिरेष प्राप्तः पदं योगिसुदुर्लभं तत्॥३३॥
Then he closed his eyes upon Śrī Rāmacandra, the Supreme Person. In an instant, every activity of his senses dissolved, and he attained that state which is exceedingly difficult even for yogins to reach.
