Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— श्रीरामचरणस्पर्शाद्दुन्दुभिर्नाम सोऽसुरः। भासयन् हरितः सर्वा द्रुतं स्वर्गपुरं ययौ॥१॥
Brahmā said: Through the touch of Śrī Rāma's feet, the asura named Dundubhi swiftly went to the heavenly city, illuminating every direction.
Passage 2
सौमित्रिमाह शृण्वत्सु कपिवीरेषु राघवः। एष याति दिवं भ्रातर्दुन्दुभिर्लूनपातकः॥२॥
While the monkey heroes listened, Rāghava told Saumitri, “Brother, Dundubhi goes to heaven with his sins cut away.
Passage 3
यस्य प्रकाशादखिला जाता वितिमिरा दिशः। दिवि संस्तुवतां चैव देवानामेष संरवः॥३॥
“His radiance has freed all the directions from darkness, and this is the sound of the gods praising him in heaven.”
Passage 4
लक्ष्मण उवाच— किमिति स्तूयते वीर दुन्दुभिर्नाम सोऽसुरः। व्रजन् स्वर्गपुरं देवैर्जिज्ञास्ये तस्य कारणम्॥४॥
Lakṣmaṇa said: “Hero, why do the gods praise the asura Dundubhi as he goes to heaven? I wish to know the reason.”
Passage 5
श्रीराम उवाच— मत्पादस्पर्शधूताघो दुन्दुभिर्नाम सोऽसुरः। देवदूतैर्नीयमानः सादरं स्वःपुरीमयम्॥५॥
Śrī Rāma said: “The touch of my feet washed away Dundubhi's sins. Celestial messengers are respectfully leading him to this heavenly city.
Passage 6
प्रकाशयति दिक्चक्रं महता पुण्यतेजसा। तदेष स्तूयते देवैराश्चर्यमसृणाशयैः॥६॥
“His great meritorious splendor illuminates the circle of directions, so the gods, their hearts softened by wonder, praise him.
Passage 7
एष कल्पशतानि स्वर्भक्ष्यते देवसम्पदः। ततश्च गन्ता विलयं ब्रह्मणा सह मत्पदे॥७॥
“For hundreds of cosmic ages he will enjoy the riches of heaven. Thereafter, together with Brahmā, he will merge into my abode.
Passage 8
किमनेन कृतं भद्रं किमनेन कृतं तपः। इति स्तुतिपरा देवा गृह्णन्त्येनं गृहागतम्॥८॥
“‘What good deed did he perform? What austerity did he practice?’ Praising him thus, the gods receive him as one arrived home.
Passage 9
दिव्यं विमानमास्थाय स्वःकान्ताधूतचामरः। गत एष स्वर्गपुरीं पश्य लक्ष्मण दुन्दुभिः॥९॥
“Look, Lakṣmaṇa: Dundubhi has reached heaven upon a divine aerial car while celestial beauties wave yak-tail fans over him.”
Passage 10
इति वदन्तममुं कपिपुङ्गवाः प्रणयसौख्यससम्भ्रममानसाः। सजवमेत्य वचोभिरपूजयंस्तदतिशुश्रुयशोभरसौरभैः॥१०॥
As he spoke, the foremost monkeys, their hearts thrilled by affectionate joy, quickly approached and honored him with words fragrant with the fullness of his celebrated glory. Sugrīva Confesses the Folly of Testing Rāma
Passage 11
अथ सादरमानम्य सुग्रीवो वदतां वरः। उवाचेदं रघुश्रेष्ठं कार्यसाधनसत्वरः॥११॥
Then Sugrīva, foremost among speakers and eager to accomplish the task, bowed respectfully and addressed the best of the Raghus.
Passage 12
जानामि राम सत्यं त्वामप्रमेयबलान्वितम्। भुवो भारापहृतयेऽवतीर्णं पुरुषं परम्॥१२॥
“Rāma, I truly know you as the Supreme Person endowed with immeasurable strength, descended to remove the earth's burden.
Passage 13
कस्त्वां विना रघुपते क्षणतो निरस्येदेकेन तावदिषुणा त्रिशिरःखरादीन्। उद्दामबाहुबलनिर्जितनाकनाथलक्ष्मीविभूषितमदाल्यराज्यबन्धून्॥१३॥
“Lord of the Raghus, who but you could destroy Triśiras, Khara, and their companions in a moment with a single arrow—those allies of a proud realm adorned by power wrested from heaven's lord through the might of their immense arms?
Passage 14
सत्त्वं तवैव विमलं विपुलं प्रशान्तं धामामनन्तिकवयः शुचिशुद्धबोधाः। आस्थाय यद्रघुपते स्वमिदं शरीरं विश्वग् भवे विहरसेऽखिलवन्दिताङ्घ्रे॥१४॥
“Lord of the Raghus, your being alone is stainless, vast, and utterly peaceful—the infinite abode known by pure and purified sages. Assuming this body as your own, you range throughout existence, your feet worshiped by all.
Passage 15
श्रीरामनाम तव काममशेषकामसम्पूर्तये जयति कामगवीसमानम्। यत्संस्मृतिर्हरति भूरि विसंकटेऽपि दुःखाकरं सुजनुषां भुवने जनानाम्॥१५॥
“Your name, Śrī Rāma, triumphs like the wish-fulfilling cow, fully satisfying every desire. Its remembrance removes the vast store of suffering belonging to well-born people in this world, even amid terrible danger.
Passage 16
गायन्ति ये तव यशः शशिरश्मिशुभ्रप्रालेयपूरशिशिरं भवतापहन्तृ। तेषां महाकविनृणां वदनारविन्दे वाग् भाति सौरभवती सदने च लक्ष्मीः॥१६॥
“Those great poets who sing your glory—white as moonlight, cool as a mass of snow, and destroying worldly anguish—have fragrant speech shining upon their lotus mouths and prosperity dwelling in their homes.
Passage 17
उद्गीयतां तव यशो विशदं कवीनां पीयूषयूषपरिपोषितमानसानाम्। चिन्तामणित्रिदशपादपकामधेनुसम्भूतिभूमिविभवाः परितो भवन्ति॥१७॥
“Around poets whose minds are nourished by nectar and who sing your stainless glory arise riches like those born from the wish-jewel, heaven's tree, the wish-cow, and the earth itself.
Passage 18
दारिद्र्यसंहतिकरं दलितापमृत्युसंतापपापनसमुत्वरबद्धकक्षम्। प्रज्ञामनःकुटिलताधनिरासनं ते जागर्ति राम चरितं भरितं गुणौघैः॥१८॥
“Rāma, your history, filled with floods of virtue, stands awake to destroy masses of poverty, shatter untimely death, grief, and sin, and drive crookedness from intellect and mind.
Passage 19
को वेत्ति सत्यगुणपौरुषसारवन्ति कर्माणि तेऽतिविमलानि निरस्तमाय। यानि त्रिलोकजनशर्मकराण्यनन्यसाधारणानि जगतां तिमिरापहानि॥१९॥
“Free from māyā, who can comprehend your utterly stainless deeds, full of truth, virtue, and heroic essence—deeds unique, bringing welfare to the three worlds and dispelling their darkness?
Passage 20
एतत्त्वदीयमतुलं धनुरुद्धतेषु संग्रामभीमभुवि कुण्डलितं सदुच्चैः। मार्तण्डमण्डलमिव ग्रसते तमांसि रक्षांसि धर्मपथमुद्रणदीक्षितानि॥२०॥
“This peerless bow of yours, always raised and curved upon the terrible field of battle, consumes the rākṣasas who are sworn to obstruct dharma just as the sun's orb consumes darkness.
Passage 21
योऽसौ परीक्षणविधिस्तव पामराणामस्माकमेव ननु तत्त्वमजानतां ते। अज्ञानमावहति सोऽखिलचित्तसाक्षिन् जानाति कः खलु भवन्तमिहाप्रमेयम्॥२१॥
“That procedure by which lowly creatures such as we, ignorant of your reality, tested you displays only our ignorance. Witness of every heart, who here can truly know you, the immeasurable?
Passage 22
त्रैलोक्यबन्धुवर कल्पतरुस्वभाव भव्याङ्घ्रिपद्मकमलाकरलालितस्य। तस्याप्रमेयपुरुषस्य तवातिमन्दैः कोऽसौ परीक्षणविधिः पशुभिः कुधीभिः॥२२॥
“Best friend of the three worlds, wish-tree by nature, your auspicious lotus feet are cherished by the lotus-born Brahmā. What test could dull-witted animals apply to you, the immeasurable Person?
Passage 23
ब्रह्माण्डकोटिकलनामयकालचक्रं चेष्टावतस्तव विभो पुरुषोत्तमस्य। श्रीराघवस्य निगमैरनिरूपितस्य नास्माभिरस्ति कपिभिः पशुभिः परीक्षा॥२३॥
“Lord, the wheel of time that measures millions of universes moves by your action. We animal-like monkeys cannot test you—Śrī Rāghava, the Supreme Person whom even the Vedas cannot define.
Passage 24
भृत्योऽस्मि ते रघुपते मम सम्प्रतीश यातैव कापि विपदुद्धतशत्रुजन्या। तत्प्रार्थनोऽपि मुखरीभवदाननस्य मौढ्यं ममैव रघुवीर बताविरस्ति॥२४॥
“Lord of the Raghus, I am your servant, though some calamity born of a violent enemy has now befallen me. Raghavīra, even my becoming talkative to request its removal reveals nothing but my own folly.” Rāma Redirects Praise toward Action
Passage 25
इति संस्तूयमानोऽसौ सुग्रीवेण दयानिधिः। उवाच तमथ श्रीमान् स्मितसम्भूषिताननः॥२५॥
Thus praised by Sugrīva, the blessed treasury of compassion addressed him, his face adorned with a smile.
Passage 26
अलमियति लघिष्ठे कर्मणि स्तोत्रवादैरहमहह सुमित्रासुतश्चैव यूयम्। समरभुवि समेत्य प्रोज्ज्वलान्यर्जयामो रजनिचरवधोत्थान्येतदूर्ध्वं यशांसि॥२६॥
“Enough words of praise for so slight a deed. I, Sumitrā's son, and all of you shall meet upon the battlefield and from this point win blazing glory born of destroying the night-rangers.
Passage 27
तव सुकृतभरेण त्वं विवर्धस्व लोके विनिहतरिपुसार्थः सत्यधर्मेण युक्तः। बलिनमथ विपक्षं दर्शयाजौ स्वकीयं तमहमहह हन्यामेकबाणप्रयोगात्॥२७॥
“Through the abundance of your merit, flourish in the world with your enemies destroyed, established in truth and dharma. Show me your mighty adversary in battle, and I shall kill him with the release of a single arrow.
Passage 28
किष्किन्धापुरमेत्य विद्विषि मया दग्धे त्वमेकेषुणा राज्यं शाधि कपिप्रवीर कतिचिद् घस्रान् युतस्तारया। भुञ्जानश्च चिराभिलाषरुचिरां राज्यश्रियं तामपि क्लिष्टं यां वनवासदारहरणाद्यैस्तत्र नो विस्मरेः॥२८॥
“Foremost monkey, once we reach Kiṣkindhā and I consume your enemy with a single arrow, rule the kingdom for several days together with Tārā. Yet while enjoying the lovely royal fortune you have long desired, do not forget me there—afflicted by forest exile, the abduction of my wife, and all that follows.”
