Passage 1
श्रीराम उवाच— अमी कपिभटाः सर्वे बलिनः समरोद्धताः। एतैः समेतः सौमित्रे भवानपि बलोर्जितः॥१॥
Śrī Rāma said: “Saumitri, all these monkey warriors are mighty and eager for battle. Joined by them, you too possess abundant strength.
Passage 2
साधयित्वाजिमुखगः कार्यमत्याहितं मम। लप्स्यते चन्द्रविशदं भुवनेषु महद्यशः॥२॥
“Entering the forefront of battle and accomplishing my exceedingly urgent purpose, you will gain great renown throughout the worlds, spotless as the moon.
Passage 3
कायेन मनसा वाचा सर्वे सौहृदसंयुताः। समेत्य घातयन्त्यद्धा राक्षसांल्लोकदुःखदान्॥३॥
“United in friendship through body, mind, and speech, they will assemble and certainly destroy the rākṣasas who inflict suffering upon the world.
Passage 4
अहं चापि वधिष्यामि राक्षसेन्द्रं दशाननम्। भवतामेव साहाय्यात् संजातबलपुष्कलः॥४॥
“And I, my strength made abundant by your aid, shall slay the ten-headed lord of the rākṣasas.
Passage 5
कार्यमेतच्च त्वरितं साधनीयं महामते। जानकी नयति क्लेशात् क्षणमप्यब्दसम्मितम्॥५॥
“Great-minded one, this undertaking must be accomplished swiftly, for in her anguish Jānakī experiences even a moment as equal to a year.
Passage 6
कुर्वे कपिपतेरस्य सुग्रीवस्य जयं रिपोः। शीघ्रमेव च मत्कार्यं करोतु कपिभिः सह॥६॥
“I shall secure this monkey lord Sugrīva's victory over his enemy. Then let him swiftly accomplish my purpose together with the monkeys.
Passage 7
यावज्जीवति लङ्केशः कुतस्तावन्नृणां शुभम्। अतस्तस्य वधो लोकसुखार्थोऽपि भविष्यति॥७॥
“So long as the lord of Laṅkā lives, how can people prosper? His death will therefore also serve the happiness of the world.
Passage 8
इत ऊर्ध्वं तु यत्कार्यं तद् द्रुतं क्रियतां सखे। विलम्बे च रिपोः पक्षः प्रत्यहं परिवर्धते॥८॥
“Friend, let whatever must be done from this point onward be done quickly, for with delay the enemy's position grows stronger each day.”
Passage 9
इत्युक्तं रघुवर्येण वचः पीयूषसम्मितम्। कपयः शुश्रुवुः सर्वे विनयानतकन्धराः॥९॥
All the monkeys, their necks bowed in humility, heard these nectar-like words spoken by the foremost Raghu.
Passage 10
अथ भ्रातृवचो रामाद्विज्ञाय कपिपुङ्गवः। हनुमन्तमुवाचेदं कार्याकार्यविचक्षणः॥१०॥
Then the foremost monkey, discerning what should and should not be done, understood Rāma's words to his brother and addressed Hanumān. Sugrīva Explains the Need for Proof
Passage 11
सुग्रीव उवाच— अये मरुत्सुत सखे जानामि रघुपुङ्गवम्। अप्रमेयबलं लोके वरेण्यं च धनुर्भृताम्॥११॥
Sugrīva said: “Friend, son of the wind, I know the foremost Raghu to possess immeasurable strength and to be the finest bowman in the world.
Passage 12
तथाप्यात्मबलं यावन्न पर्याप्ततमं भवेत्। तावन्नैव विरोद्धव्यं सपत्नेषु मनीषिणा॥१२॥
“Even so, a prudent person should not oppose his enemies until his own strength is entirely sufficient.
Passage 13
अनिश्चितबला ये तु सपत्नेष्वभिषेणनम्। कुर्वन्ति मोहाभिभूतास्ते गच्छन्ति पराभवम्॥१३॥
“Those who, without knowing their strength, march against enemies under the sway of delusion go down to defeat.
Passage 14
भवन्ति चोपहासाय लोकेषु बहुदुःखिताः। अतो बलं स्वं निश्चित्य कार्यं युद्धाभिषेणनम्॥१४॥
“They suffer greatly and become objects of ridicule in the world. One should therefore ascertain one's strength before marching to war.
Passage 15
अस्त्येव बलवान् रामो येनानेके द्विषो हताः। तथापि मर्त्यलिङ्गत्वात्प्रतीतिर्नोपजायते॥१५॥
“Rāma is certainly mighty, for he has killed many enemies. Yet because he bears a mortal form, complete assurance does not arise. The Dundubhi and Seven-Palm Tests
Passage 16
उक्तं मे पूर्वमृषिभिः कबन्धं दुन्दुभेर्हि यत्। यः क्षिपेदेकहस्तेन स हन्याद्वालिनं ध्रुवम्॥१६॥
“The sages previously told me that whoever could cast away Dundubhi's skeleton with one hand would surely kill Vālin.
Passage 17
महान्तमद्रिकूटाभमस्थिकूटं सुदुर्धरम्। कः क्षिपेदेकहस्तेन ह्यप्रमेयबलं विना॥१७॥
“That immense and nearly immovable mass of bone resembles a mountain peak. Who could throw it with one hand without immeasurable strength?
Passage 18
सप्त तालद्रुमाश्चापि सन्ति वक्रप्ररोहिणः। पातालतलसन्मूला दुर्भेद्या येन केनचित्॥१८॥
“There are also seven palm trees that have grown crooked, their roots firmly set in the subterranean depths. No ordinary person can pierce them.
Passage 19
तान् यो भेत्स्यत्यसरलान् बाणेनैकेन तत्क्षणात्। स हन्याद्वालिनं वीरो मतिरेषा ध्रुवं मम॥१९॥
“The hero who pierces those crooked trees in a single instant with one arrow will kill Vālin. This is my firm conviction.
Passage 20
अतः पूर्वं प्रतीत्यर्थं दुन्दुभेरस्थि सुस्थिरम्। उत्क्षेपणीयं रामेण भेद्यास्तालाश्च सप्त ते॥२०॥
“Therefore, to establish confidence beforehand, Rāma must cast away Dundubhi's massive skeleton and pierce those seven palm trees.
Passage 21
ततोऽहं जातविश्वासः किष्किन्धानगरीं द्रुतम्। नेष्यामि ननु वीरेन्द्रं वालिनो वधहेतवे॥२१॥
“Once convinced, I shall quickly lead the hero of heroes to the city of Kiṣkindhā to bring about Vālin's death.
Passage 22
हते तस्मिन् महादुष्टे किष्किन्धाराज्यसम्पदः। भोक्ष्येऽहं तारया सार्धं गजेन्द्रगतिलीलया॥२२॥
“When that great villain is slain, I shall enjoy the royal prosperity of Kiṣkindhā with Tārā, moving in majesty like the lord of elephants.
Passage 23
ततोऽस्याज्ञापरवशः संयोजयामि महाचमूम्। कपीन्द्रबलसंव्यूढामृक्षराजबलोन्नताम्॥२३॥
“Then, wholly subject to Rāma's command, I shall assemble a great army massed with the forces of monkey lords and exalted by the strength of the bear king.
Passage 24
ततः क्रियात् सपत्नोऽस्य रावणो लोकरावणः। सद्य एव रणे वध्यः परिवारगणैः सह॥२४॥
“Then let his enemy Rāvaṇa, who makes the world cry out, be slain at once in battle together with all his household.”
Passage 25
निशम्य सुग्रीववचो हनुमान् जहास विज्ञातबलोऽस्य भर्तुः। तथेति तं प्रोच्य रघुप्रवीरं विज्ञापयामास यथोक्तमर्थम्॥२५॥
Hearing Sugrīva's words, Hanumān laughed, for he knew his Lord's strength. Saying, “So be it,” to Sugrīva, he informed the Raghu hero of the proposal just made.
