Passage 1
रुदन्तं राघवमनुविरुरोदाश्रुनयनोऽनुजः। अखिद्यततरां चित्ते व्याप्तः शोकेन भूयसा॥१॥
Seeing Rāghava weep, his tearful-eyed younger brother wept after him and grieved intensely at heart, overwhelmed by immense sorrow.
Passage 2
तावनुप्लवगश्रेष्ठाः सर्वेऽप्यश्रुविलोचनाः। अखिद्यन्त भृशं चित्ते क्लेशसंक्षीणमानसाः॥२॥
All the foremost monkeys who accompanied the two brothers also had tears in their eyes. Their minds worn down by anguish, they suffered deeply within.
Passage 3
ततः सर्वेऽपि रुरुदुः काकुत्स्थे परिदेवनम्। कुर्वाणे सति जानक्या विरहेण महाधिना॥३॥
Then they all wept when Kākutstha lamented beneath the great affliction of separation from Jānakī.
Passage 4
तुल्यदुःखसुखैरेवं सुहृद्भिः प्लवगोत्तमैः। तन्वानः परमां मैत्रीं निन्ये सोऽहानि कानिचित्॥४॥
Thus, expanding his deep friendship with the foremost monkeys who shared his sorrow and joy, he passed several days.
Passage 5
सीताविरहसम्भूतः परमाधिर्यदा प्रभोः। अवर्धततरां चित्ते तदा सर्वे समब्रुवन्॥५॥
When the Lord's intense affliction born of separation from Sītā increased greatly in his heart, they all addressed him. Lakṣmaṇa Urges Steadiness
Passage 6
लक्ष्मण उवाच— धैर्यमालम्ब्यतामार्य त्वय्येवं परिदेवनम्। कुर्वत्यजस्रमस्माकं मनोऽपि क्षीयतेतराम्॥६॥
Lakṣmaṇa said: “Noble brother, take hold of courage. While you lament continually in this way, our own hearts too are utterly wasting away.
Passage 7
भवानानन्दजननः सुहृदां विहितोत्सवः। स कथं रघुशार्दूल शोकं वर्धयसेऽनिशम्॥७॥
“You give rise to joy and establish celebration among your friends. Tiger of the Raghus, how then can you increase sorrow day and night?
Passage 8
त्वयि सानन्दहृदये जगदानन्दितं भवेत्। अत आनन्दसिन्धो त्वं मा शुचं परिवर्धय॥८॥
“When your heart is joyful, the world becomes joyful. Therefore, ocean of bliss, do not increase your grief.
Passage 9
अधैर्यात् क्षीयते सत्त्वं सत्त्वहीने मतिक्षयः। मतिक्षयाच्च सुहृदस्त्यजन्त्येनं चिरं श्रिताः॥९॥
“Impatience depletes one's strength; when strength is gone, judgment fails; and when judgment fails, even friends who have long depended upon a person abandon him.
Passage 10
त्यक्तः सुहृद्भिः स्वजनैः श्रियापि त्यजते जनः। निःश्रीकः स्यान्मृतप्रायो जीवन्नेव न संशयः॥१०॥
“Abandoned by friends and family, a person is abandoned by fortune as well. Bereft of prosperity, he becomes virtually dead even while alive—there is no doubt.
Passage 11
एतान्यधैर्यमूलानि तस्मात्तत्परिवर्जय। वाञ्छानुरूपं च तव भवत्येव जगत्पते॥११॥
“These misfortunes all have impatience as their root, so cast it aside. Lord of the world, events will surely accord with your desire.
Passage 12
यद्यत्कामयसे राम तत्तत्तव करे स्थितम्। जानासि सद्य एवेति मा शोचिष्ठाः प्रियाकृते॥१२॥
“Whatever you desire, Rāma, already rests in your hand. You know that it will be accomplished at once, so do not grieve for your beloved.
Passage 13
गिरीन् भित्त्वा भुवं छित्त्वा शोषयित्वापि वारिधीन्। शमयित्वौर्वमप्यग्निं क्षिप्त्वापि कुलपर्वतान्॥१३॥
“Even if I must split mountains, cleave the earth, dry up the oceans, extinguish the submarine fire, or cast away the great ranges—
Passage 14
कृत्वापि दुष्करं कर्म करिष्ये कामितं तव। आत्मना च सुहृद्भिश्च धीरो भव ततः प्रभो॥१४॥
“—I shall do the impossible and fulfill your desire, by myself and with our friends. Therefore, Lord, be resolute.
Passage 15
तव प्रतापात् काकुत्स्थ जगच्छोको निवर्तते। स कथं शोकसंदोहसंवीतोऽसि महामते॥१५॥
“Kākutstha, the world's sorrow recedes before your majesty. Great-minded one, how then are you enveloped in a mass of grief?
Passage 16
अहं ते सेवको राम सहायाः कपिपुङ्गवाः। वायुसूनुर्बली येषु तथायं रविनन्दनः॥१६॥
“Rāma, I am your servant, and the foremost monkeys are your allies. Among them are the mighty son of the wind and this son of the sun.
Passage 17
कर्तुं धर्तुं सुसंहर्तुं समर्थाः सर्वमेव ते। तैर्युक्तश्च भगवन्नार्य शक्तोऽस्यखिलकर्मसु॥१७॥
“They are capable of doing, sustaining, or wholly destroying anything. Joined by them, blessed noble one, you can accomplish every deed.
Passage 18
जगद्विध्वंसकः प्रायो रावणः सर्वतापनः। कथं म्रियेत यद्येवं न स्यान्महदतिक्रमः॥१८॥
“Rāvaṇa, destroyer of the world and tormentor of all, already stands near death. Were it not so, could such an immense transgression have occurred?
Passage 19
इति लक्ष्मणवाक्येन शान्तेन नयवर्तिना। स्वास्थ्यमालम्बततरां विरहाढ्योऽपि राघवः॥१९॥
At these calm and prudent words of Lakṣmaṇa, Rāghava regained considerable composure even though still laden with separation. Sugrīva Foresees the Campaign
Passage 20
सुग्रीव उवाच— अलं दुःखेन वीरेन्द्र किमेवमनुशोचसि। बलादानेष्यति भवान् जानकीं शत्रुवेश्मतः॥२०॥
Sugrīva said: “Enough sorrow, hero of heroes! Why do you grieve so? By force you will bring Jānakī back from the enemy's dwelling.
Passage 21
हत्वा तं दुर्विधिं घोरं राक्षसेन्द्रं महाबलम्। जित्वा च सपरिवारं बालवृद्धावशेषितम्॥२१॥
“You will kill that terrible and wicked mighty lord of the rākṣasas and defeat his household, leaving only the children and aged.
Passage 22
वाद्यैः सह सुरेन्द्राणां जयघोषैर्द्विजन्मनाम्। आयास्यसि समादाय मैथिलीं त्वं रघूद्वह॥२२॥
“Bearer of the Raghu line, you will return with Maithilī amid the instruments of the gods' lords and the brāhmaṇas' cries of victory.
Passage 23
सहानेकमहापद्मसंख्यातैः कपिपुङ्गवैः। संयोज्य वाहिनीं भव्यां भवान् प्रस्थास्यतेऽचिरम्॥२३॥
“You will soon set forth after assembling a magnificent army of foremost monkeys counted in many vast multitudes.
Passage 24
मत्सपत्नं तं दुष्टं जहि शराग्निना। मां स्थापय रघुश्रेष्ठ किष्किन्धाराज्यसम्पदि॥२४॥
“Burn my wicked enemy with the fire of your arrows, best of the Raghus, and establish me in the royal prosperity of Kiṣkindhā.
Passage 25
ततो मयाभ्यनुज्ञाताः कोटिशः कपिपुङ्गवाः। समवेष्यन्ति भवतः कार्याय कृतनिश्चयाः॥२५॥
“Then, commissioned by me, foremost monkeys in their tens of millions will assemble, resolute in accomplishing your purpose.
Passage 26
रक्षसां नगरी सिन्धोर्मध्ये तिष्ठति दुर्गमा। कपयस्तां परिवार्य संस्थिताः सर्वतोदिशम्॥२६॥
“The inaccessible city of the rākṣasas stands amid the ocean. The monkeys will surround it and take their positions in every direction.
Passage 27
प्राकारं रचयिष्यन्ति द्वितीयं हेमवर्ष्मभिः। ततस्तत्र गृहाट्टालहट्टापथगता नराः॥२७॥
“With their golden bodies they will form a second rampart. Then the people within its houses, towers, markets, and roads—
Passage 28
रुद्धाः कपिभटैर्भूयो ध्रुवं शप्स्यन्ति रावणम्। ततः स सीतामादाय संगच्छेदपि तत्क्षणात्॥२८॥
“—blockaded by the monkey warriors, will surely curse Rāvaṇa again and again. He may then bring Sītā and come to terms that very moment.
Passage 29
अथो युद्धोद्यतोऽप्याशु संक्षयं संगमिष्यति। तव बाणानलैस्तीव्रैरिति मे निश्चयः प्रभो॥२९॥
“Or, if he rises for battle, he will swiftly meet destruction in the fierce fires of your arrows. This is my certainty, Lord.”
Passage 30
इति तस्य गिरा सम्यक् शान्तः पीयूषदिग्धया। रामस्य शोकदहनः सीताविरहसम्भवः॥३०॥
Sugrīva's words, thoroughly anointed with nectar, completely quieted Rāma's burning grief born from separation from Sītā. Hanumān Declares Rāvaṇa Doomed
Passage 31
हनुमानुवाच— सत्यसंध दयासिन्धो जगदानन्ददायक। अलं विलप्यातिमात्रं धीरो भव महामते॥३१॥
Hanumān said: “Truthful one, ocean of compassion, giver of joy to the world—enough excessive lamentation. Great-minded one, be steadfast.
Passage 32
विवृद्धशोकः पुरुषः शत्रुभिः परिहस्यते। ततः को मतिमानेवं वर्धयेच्छोकमात्मनः॥३२॥
“A person whose grief keeps growing is mocked by his enemies. What intelligent person, then, would increase his own sorrow in this way?
Passage 33
जानामि जानकीहेतोर्मृत्युं तस्य दुरात्मनः। जगत्संतापकन्दस्य दशकण्ठस्य वैरिणः॥३३॥
“I recognize in Jānakī the cause of death for that wicked ten-headed enemy, the very root of the world's torment.
Passage 34
सानुजं सपरीवारं भवानेतं हनिष्यति। इतीव तस्य वीरेन्द्र जातो बुद्धिविपर्ययः॥३४॥
“You will kill him together with his brothers and household. It is as though, hero of heroes, his judgment became perverse precisely so this might occur.
Passage 35
नो चेत्परस्य दयितां कःस्विदात्मगृहं नयेत्। रक्षसां चापि सर्वेषां जातो भाग्यविपर्ययः॥३५॥
“Otherwise, who would take another man's beloved into his own house? The fortune of all the rākṣasas has likewise turned against them.
Passage 36
जनयन्ति भुवो भारं राक्षसाः सुरवैरिणः। नाशयन्ति परं धर्मं वध्यास्ते सर्व एव ते॥३६॥
“The rākṣasas, enemies of the gods, burden the earth and destroy the highest dharma. Every one of them deserves to be slain.” Nala and Nīla Pledge Impossible Feats
Passage 37
नल उवाच— को भवत्सदृशो लोके पुमान् काकुत्स्थ दृश्यते। यो हन्याद्रावणं दुष्टं त्रैलोक्यपरितापदम्॥३७॥
Nala said: “Kākutstha, what man like you is seen in this world—one who can kill the wicked Rāvaṇa, tormentor of the three worlds?
Passage 38
भवानेकोऽस्य हन्तासि ततस्तेन तव प्रिया। चोरितातीवपापेन विपरीतधिया भृशम्॥३८॥
“You alone are his killer. That is why this exceedingly sinful creature, his judgment utterly reversed, stole your beloved.
Passage 39
अचिरेणैव लङ्कायां तवोच्चैर्जैत्रदुन्दुभिः। ध्वनिष्यति सुगम्भीरसमुद्रध्वनिसुन्दरः॥३९॥
“Before long your lofty drum of victory will resound in Laṅkā, beautiful with a deep sound like the ocean.
Passage 40
विजित्य लङ्कां काकुत्स्थ निखाय विजयध्वजम्। उच्चैः सुरवरस्त्रीभिर्गापयित्वा यशोऽमलम्॥४०॥
“Kākutstha, after conquering Laṅkā and planting the banner of victory, you will have your stainless glory sung aloud by the finest celestial women.
Passage 41
त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं भवानानन्दयिष्यति। अतो धैर्यमुपालम्ब्य कतिचिद्वासरान् नय॥४१॥
“You will bring joy to all the three worlds. Therefore take hold of courage and pass these few days.
Passage 42
न पुनस्तीव्रशोकेन मनः क्षीणतमं कुरु। महतामार्तिरप्याशु नश्यत्येव न संशयः॥४२॥
“Do not make your heart exceedingly weak through intense grief. Even the distress of the great soon disappears—there is no doubt.”
Passage 43
नील उवाच— धेहि नो मूर्ध्नि चरणौ भवान् कुलविभूषणः। त्वत्प्रतापाद्रघुपते करिष्यामोऽपि दुष्करम्॥४३॥
Nīla said: “Ornament of your line, place your feet upon our heads. By your majesty, Lord of the Raghus, we shall accomplish even the impossible.
Passage 44
लङ्घनीयः समुद्रोऽपि भेदनीयः कुलाचलः। उत्खाय मेरुरप्याशु निक्षेप्योऽष्टासु दिक्षु च॥४४॥
“The ocean can be crossed and a great mountain split. Even Meru can be swiftly uprooted and cast into the eight directions.
Passage 45
किं किं न करवामोच्चैस्तवाज्ञालब्धसिद्धयः। आस्फोटयामो भुवने बाहून् वयमनारतम्॥४५॥
“What would we not accomplish, empowered by your command? We shall ceaselessly slap our arms in triumph throughout the world.
Passage 46
प्रसह्योद्धर्तुकामाः स्म सुमेरुमपि राघव। तवाज्ञावशगा एव तिष्ठामः खलु सम्प्रति॥४६॥
“Rāghava, we desire to lift up even Sumeru by force. At present we truly stand wholly subject to your command.” Prajaṅgha Affirms the Monkey Host
Passage 47
प्रजङ्घ उवाच— सत्यमेते प्रभाषन्ते कपिवीरा बलोर्जिताः। आज्ञायां कपिराजस्ते ध्रुवमेव नियोक्ष्यति॥४७॥
Prajaṅgha said: “These mighty monkey heroes speak the truth. The monkey king will certainly place them under your command.
Passage 48
दुष्करेऽप्यर्थविषये साधयिष्यन्त्यमी च तम्। तव प्रतापमात्रेण जातालौकिकसिद्धयः॥४८॥
“They will achieve your purpose even when it lies in the realm of the impossible, for your majesty alone has bestowed superhuman powers upon them.
Passage 49
कपिप्रवीरो हनुमान् मनस्वी महाबलोऽयं महनीयवीर्यः। अयं च सूर्यस्य सुतो महौजाः सुग्रीवनामा भुवने तथैव॥४९॥
“Here is Hanumān, foremost among monkeys, high-minded, immensely strong, and of glorious valor. Here likewise in this world is the sun's mighty son named Sugrīva.
Passage 50
एते वयं नलनीलाङ्गदाद्याः सर्वे तवाज्ञैकवशाः स्म सत्यम्। तथा करिष्याम उदारमौलेरुत्स्थामहे राम यथैव लङ्काम्॥५०॥
“And we—Nala, Nīla, Aṅgada, and the others—truly stand subject to your command alone. Noble-crowned Rāma, we shall act so as to uproot Laṅkā itself.”
Passage 51
इति कपिभटैर्वारं वारं गिरा परिसान्त्वितो रघुपतिरथ श्रीमत्प्रेक्ष्यानुजस्य मुखाम्बुजम्। इदमकथयत्किञ्चिच्चित्ते निवारितविक्रियः स्मितलवसुधासम्पृक्तास्यक्षपाकरमण्डलः॥५१॥
Thus repeatedly consoled by the monkey warriors' words, the Lord of the Raghus then looked upon the radiant lotus face of his younger brother. His mind's agitation somewhat restrained and the moon-disc of his face touched by the nectar of a slight smile, he spoke.
