Chapter context and opening material

Sugrīva presents the ornaments Sītā cast down while Rāvaṇa carried her away. Rāma unwraps them and collapses in grief. Addressing the necklace, earrings, girdle, anklet, and each other ornament in turn, he sees their dust and silence as witnesses to Sītā's absence, until remembrance leaves every sense withdrawn.
