Passage 1
सुग्रीव उवाच— एवं चेतर्हि हनुमन् सिद्ध एव मनोरथः। मम दुष्टमतेर्भ्रातुर्हननं प्रतिवाञ्छतः॥१॥
Sugrīva said: “If this is so, Hanumān, then the desire of one who longs for the death of his wicked-minded brother is already fulfilled.
Passage 2
तदाशु तेन वीरेण मां सङ्गमय मारुते। दिदृक्षामि भृशं रामं तमेव रघुनन्दनम्॥२॥
“Son of the wind, quickly bring me together with that hero. I greatly desire to see Rāma, that delight of the Raghus.
Passage 3
आनेष्यामि च तं वीरं सानुजं हर्षवर्धनम्। वासयिष्यामि कतिचिद्दिनानीह महीधरे॥३॥
“I shall bring that joy-increasing hero here with his younger brother and have them stay for several days upon this mountain.
Passage 4
ऋष्यमूकगिरौ रम्ये मुनिमण्डलमण्डिते। अनुरक्तमना वीरो निवत्स्यति मुदान्वितः॥४॥
“On beautiful Mount Ṛṣyamūka, adorned by communities of sages, the affectionate hero will dwell filled with joy.
Passage 5
ध्रुवमार्तिहरश्चैव मम रामो भविष्यति। हता येनोद्धतखरत्रिशिरोदूषणादयः॥५॥
“Rāma will certainly remove my distress, for he slew the arrogant Khara, Triśiras, Dūṣaṇa, and the others.
Passage 6
सुबाहुर्निहतो येन मारीचश्च निपातितः। तथान्ये राक्षसवरा महाबलपराक्रमाः॥६॥
“He killed Subāhu and struck down Mārīca, as well as other eminent rākṣasas of immense strength and valor.
Passage 7
क्षणाद्येन विनिर्दग्धास्तीव्रेण शरवह्निना। स कथं नैव तं दुष्टं धक्ष्यति स्वेन तेजसा॥७॥
“He burned them up in a moment with the fierce fire of his arrows. How could he fail to consume that wicked Vālin with his own splendor?
Passage 8
स्मरामि हनुमन्नद्य यदुक्तं मुनिभिर्मम। रामो वालिवधं कर्तुं समर्थो भुवनत्रये॥८॥
“Hanumān, today I remember what the sages told me: in all three worlds, Rāma is capable of bringing about Vālin's death.
Passage 9
तेन मैत्रीमहं लब्ध्वा हृतदुष्टसपत्नकः। भोक्ष्यामि किं न किष्किन्धापुरीराज्यमकण्टकम्॥९॥
“After gaining friendship with him and having my wicked enemy removed, shall I not enjoy the unobstructed kingdom of the city of Kiṣkindhā?”
Passage 10
इत्युक्त्वा कपिशार्दूलो नलनीलादिभिः सह। हनूमता च संयुक्तो ययौ रामदिदृक्षया॥१०॥
Having spoken thus, the tiger among monkeys went to see Rāma, accompanied by Hanumān, Nala, Nīla, and the others. Rāma Embraces the Monkeys
Passage 11
स तं तरुतलासीनं सानुजं श्यामसुन्दरम्। ददर्श रामं सुग्रीवः सीताविरहविह्वलम्॥११॥
Sugrīva saw dark and beautiful Rāma seated beneath a tree with his younger brother, overwhelmed by separation from Sītā.
Passage 12
ववन्दिरे रघुपतिं सर्वे कीशाः पृथक् पृथक्। तान् रामचन्द्रो जग्राह दोर्भ्यामालिङ्ग्य सादरम्॥१२॥
All the monkeys bowed one by one to the Lord of the Raghus. Rāmacandra welcomed them respectfully, embracing them with both arms.
Passage 13
सस्मितप्रणयालापसादरप्रेक्षणादिभिः। तोषिता रघुनाथेन सर्वे ते कपिपुङ्गवाः॥१३॥
Raghunātha delighted all those foremost monkeys with smiling affectionate conversation, respectful glances, and other courtesies.
Passage 14
निषण्णाः परितो रामं महाभागाः कपीश्वराः। तेषां मध्यगतो रेजे सुग्रीवो हृष्टमानसः॥१४॥
The fortunate monkey lords sat around Rāma, and joyful Sugrīva shone in their midst. Sugrīva Praises Rāma's Grace
Passage 15
श्रीराममुखसंदर्शविवृद्धसुखवारिधिः। ऊचे विहस्य सुग्रीवः प्रमोदकलया गिरा॥१५॥
The ocean of his joy swelling at the sight of Śrī Rāma's face, Sugrīva smiled and spoke in a voice filled with delight.
Passage 16
स्वागतं ते रघुश्रेष्ठ सानुजस्य महात्मनः। प्रायः कृतार्थयँल्लोकान् विचरत्यवनीं भवान्॥१६॥
“Welcome to you and your noble younger brother, best of the Raghus. You seem to travel the earth making its people fulfilled.
Passage 17
अद्य मे नयने राम भृशं सफलतां गते। सानुजस्य तव श्रीमन् दर्शनामृतलाभतः॥१७॥
“Rāma, today my eyes have become fully fruitful by obtaining the nectar of seeing you with your younger brother.
Passage 18
स्वरूपेणैव रामेन्दो ददासि जगतां मुदम्। चरितैः पुनरत्यन्तं धवलीकुरुषे दिशः॥१८॥
“Moonlike Rāma, by your very form you give joy to the worlds, and by your deeds you make every direction brilliantly pure.
Passage 19
अकार्षं किं नु सुकृतमनल्पं रघुपुङ्गव। यद्भवानद्य संदृष्टो मुदा संफुल्लया दृशा॥१९॥
“Foremost of the Raghus, what vast good deed could I have performed that today I behold you with an eye blossoming in joy?
Passage 20
लोकोत्तरमिदं शीलं तव राम मुदावहम्। कपिजातिरपि श्रीमन्नहं येन कृतार्थितः॥२०॥
“Rāma, this joy-giving character of yours transcends the world: blessed Lord, by it even I, born among monkeys, have been fulfilled.
Passage 21
न ते स्पृहा रामचन्द्र कस्यापि शुभवस्तुनः। सर्वभव्योपपन्नस्य लब्धसर्वार्थसम्पदः॥२१॥
“Rāmacandra, endowed with every excellence and possessing the wealth of every aim, you desire no auspicious thing from anyone.
Passage 22
तथापि मादृशान् दीनान् नानोपप्लवसम्प्लुतान्। कृतार्थीकर्तुमुचितो जनैः सङ्गम्य ते भवान्॥२२॥
“Nevertheless, by meeting people like me—lowly and submerged in many calamities—you make us fulfilled.
Passage 23
तत्र प्रसङ्गाद्रघुवंशकेतो ध्रुवं गमिष्यामि जयं दुरापम्। यशश्च मे भूरि भविष्यतीश पूर्णेन्दुशुभ्रं विपुलं त्रिलोक्याम्॥२३॥
“Through that association, banner of the Raghu line, I shall certainly gain otherwise unattainable victory, and my abundant fame, bright as the full moon, will spread through the three worlds.
Passage 24
एतावदेव किल दुर्लभमत्र लोके यत्स्यात्त्वया सुकृति रघुदेव मैत्री। स्वर्गापवर्गसुखसंततिभूरिभोगा भूयो भवेयुरित एव न ते दुरापाः॥२४॥
“For a meritorious soul, Lord of the Raghus, only this is truly rare in the world: friendship with you. Heaven, liberation, unbroken happiness, and abundant enjoyments follow from it and are not difficult to attain.
Passage 25
भवानभ्यर्थितं दातुं कल्पद्रुमस्तु का स्तुतिः। अभ्यर्थिताधिकफलप्रदो जगति यद्भवान्॥२५॥
“What praise is it to call you a wish-fulfilling tree that grants what is requested, when in this world you bestow fruit greater than the request?
Passage 26
किं दुष्टराक्षसचमूहननेन राम कीर्तिं तवाधिकतरां समुदाहरामः। मातङ्गकुम्भदलनोद्धतविक्रमस्य सिंहस्य किं नु सृगयूथवधाद्यशांसि॥२६॥
“Rāma, why should we proclaim your fame greater because you destroy an army of wicked rākṣasas? What further renown does a lion, mighty enough to split an elephant's forehead, gain by killing a herd of jackals? Sugrīva Asks for Vālin's Defeat
Passage 27
भ्राता दुष्टेन वलिना बालिनाहं निराकृतः। किष्किन्धानगरी चापि त्याजिता भोगशालिनी॥२७॥
“My wicked brother Vālin drove me away and forced me to abandon the pleasure-filled city of Kiṣkindhā.
Passage 28
तेनास्मि दुःखितो राम निःश्रीकः सम्पराजितः। तन्मे दुःखं भवान् हर्तुं समर्थो रघुपुङ्गव॥२८॥
“Rāma, because of him I am afflicted, stripped of fortune, and utterly defeated. Foremost of the Raghus, you are capable of removing this sorrow of mine.
Passage 29
अप्रमेयबलं मन्ये त्वामहं रघुनन्दन। हता येनैकबाणेन तादृग्घोरनिशाचराः॥२९॥
“Delight of the Raghus, I consider your strength immeasurable, for with a single arrow you slew such dreadful night-roaming rākṣasas.
Passage 30
ऋष्यमूकगिरावत्र सुहृदां सुखवर्धनः। त्वमास्व सानुजो राम मुनीनां रमयन् मनः॥३०॥
“Rāma, increaser of your friends' happiness, remain here upon Mount Ṛṣyamūka with your younger brother, gladdening the sages' hearts.
Passage 31
जहि मत्सार्थगो दुष्टं बालिनं बलदुर्मदम्। कीर्तिस्ते भुवने राम व्याप्स्यतीति न संशयः॥३१॥
“Acting for my sake, kill wicked Vālin, who is arrogant in his strength. Rāma, there is no doubt that your fame will spread throughout the world.”
Passage 32
इति तेनाभिसंस्तूय तेजसां निधिरच्युतः। ऋष्यमूकगिरौ नीतो रामचन्द्रः सलक्ष्मणः॥३२॥
Thus praised by Sugrīva, unfailing Rāmacandra, treasury of splendor, was led with Lakṣmaṇa onto Mount Ṛṣyamūka.
Passage 33
रघुपतिरिह वास्तून् मोदयन् योगिवर्यान्। जनकनृपतितनुजाविप्रयोगेन युक्तः। अवसदचलवर्ये ऋष्यमूके सुमित्रासुतसहित उदारः सेव्यमानः कपीन्द्रैः॥३३॥
There the noble Lord of the Raghus dwelt upon excellent Mount Ṛṣyamūka with Sumitrā's son, gladdening the foremost yogīs and attended by the monkey lords, though still afflicted by separation from King Janaka's daughter.
