Passage 1
हनुमानुवाच— यदाह रघुशार्दूल भवान् मैत्रीविवेकवित्। तत्तथैव दयानाथ जगन्मित्रमसि प्रभो॥१॥
Hanumān said: “Tiger of the Raghus, master of compassion and knower of friendship's discernment, what you have said is entirely true. Lord, you are the friend of the world.
Passage 2
त्वं त्रैलोक्योपकर्तासि कस्ते प्रत्युपकारकृत्। त्वं मित्रं जगतो राम कस्ते मैत्रीं जनोऽर्हति॥२॥
“You are the benefactor of the three worlds—who could repay you? Rāma, you are the world's friend; what person could be worthy of friendship with you?
Passage 3
यस्तु कश्चिन्महाभागस्त्वया मैत्रीं विधास्यति। ऐहिकामुष्मिकार्थेषु स निश्चिन्तो भविष्यति॥३॥
“Whatever fortunate person forms friendship with you will be free of anxiety concerning every aim in this world and the next.
Passage 4
समर्थोऽसि स्वयं राम सर्वकार्येषु केवलः। न तेऽपेक्षा सहायस्याप्रमेयबलशालिनः॥४॥
“Rāma, you alone are capable of every deed. Possessing immeasurable strength, you have no need of a helper.
Passage 5
भवनोत्तारणायैव तवारम्भो रघूद्वह। न ते किमप्यवाप्तव्यं पूर्णकामस्य संततम्॥५॥
“Bearer of the Raghu line, your undertaking exists solely to deliver the world. Eternally fulfilled in every desire, you have nothing at all to obtain.
Passage 6
समवाप्य त्वया मैत्रीं सुग्रीवो भाग्यवत्तमः। कपिपुङ्गवताशब्दं सार्थकं यातु राघव॥६॥
“By gaining friendship with you, Sugrīva becomes supremely fortunate. Rāghava, may the title ‘foremost of monkeys’ become true in him. The Promised Monkey Campaign
Passage 7
अतो मामनुजानीहि गन्तुं सुग्रीवसन्निधिम्। आवेद्य तव वृत्तान्तं भूय आयाम्यहं द्रुतम्॥७॥
“Therefore permit me to go into Sugrīva's presence. I shall report your circumstances and quickly return again.
Passage 8
त्वत्सकाशमिहानेष्ये कपीन्द्रं सत्यवादिनम्। मैत्रीं च कारयिष्यामि त्वया तस्य बलीयसीम्॥८॥
“I shall bring the truthful monkey lord here into your presence and establish a powerful friendship between him and you.
Passage 9
अनेकपद्मसंख्याताः कपिवर्या महाभटाः। चलन्तु तव सेनायां लङ्कानाथं जिगीषतः॥९॥
“Let eminent monkey warriors numbered in many padmas march in your army when you set out to conquer the lord of Laṅkā.
Passage 10
तैर्युतः समरेषु त्वं कपिभिर्धृतकेतुभिः। मघवानिव पाथोदैर्नानावर्णैर्विराज भोः॥१०॥
“Joined in battle by those banner-bearing monkeys of many colors, Lord, may you shine like Indra surrounded by clouds.
Passage 11
वाद्यन्तु वीरवाद्यानि निघ्नन्तानि कपीश्वरैः। हृत्कपाटविपाटीनि राक्षसानां बलीयसाम्॥११॥
“Let the monkey lords strike heroic instruments whose sound bursts open the gates of mighty rākṣasas' hearts.
Passage 12
ते छत्रचामरद्वन्द्वपताकाध्वजधारिणः। भेरीनिःसानपटहवादकाः सन्तु ते पुरः॥१२॥
“Let those bearers of parasols, paired yak-tail fans, pennants, and standards, those players of kettledrums and booming war drums, go before you.
Passage 13
चालयन् धरणीं कृत्स्नां सरितः शोषयन् पथि। समी कुर्वन् गिरीन् वप्रान् प्रतिष्ठस्व त्वमाजये॥१३॥
“Shaking the whole earth, drying up rivers along the road, and leveling mountains and ramparts, set forth to battle.
Passage 14
त्वद्बाणपावकध्वस्तराक्षसानीक आतुरः। अर्हायेतु पतङ्गत्वं रावणस्त्वयि दीपके॥१४॥
“Tormented as the rākṣasa host is destroyed by the fire of your arrows, let Rāvaṇa become a moth fit to perish in you, the lamp.
Passage 15
कृतप्रतापो लङ्कायां कृतत्रैलोक्यकण्टकः। अयोध्याभिमुखो भूयास्त्वं राम विजयोज्जितः॥१५॥
“Having manifested your valor in Laṅkā and removed the thorn of the three worlds, Rāma, may you turn toward Ayodhyā radiant with victory.
Passage 16
भाग्यं कपिभटानां वै मया किमनुवर्ण्यताम्। येषां नाथः स सुग्रीवस्तव मित्रं कृपानिधे॥१६॥
“How could I adequately describe the good fortune of the monkey warriors whose lord Sugrīva will be your friend, treasury of compassion?
Passage 17
अचिन्त्यैव च ते राम कृपाश्चर्यकृपानिधे। सुदुर्लभा या यत्स्या मर्कटा अधिकारिणः॥१७॥
“Rāma, treasure of wondrous compassion, your grace is inconceivable and exceedingly rare, for monkeys have become its recipients.
Passage 18
महतां मुनिवर्याणां मुखेभ्यो रामचन्द्रमः। अश्रौषमेवमेवाहं त्वत्तो बालिवधो यथा॥१८॥
“Rāmacandra, I heard from the lips of eminent great sages that Vālin's death would indeed come from you.
Passage 19
स कालः किल सम्प्राप्त एष एव रघूत्तम। हत्वा बालिं बलात् सङ्ख्ये स तद्भ्रातानुगृह्यताम्॥१९॥
“Best of the Raghus, that very time has now arrived. Slay Vālin by force in battle and favor his brother.
Passage 20
इत्युक्त्वा हनुमांस्तस्य कृत्वा पादाभिवन्दनम्। प्रतस्थे ऋष्यमूकाद्रिं यत्रास्ते कपिपुङ्गवः॥२०॥
Having spoken thus, Hanumān bowed at Rāma's feet and set out for Mount Ṛṣyamūka, where the foremost monkey remained. Hanumān Reports to Sugrīva
Passage 21
पथि विन्यस्तनयनो वर्जिताखिलसंकथः। मैत्रीं श्रीरामचन्द्रेण काङ्क्षमाणो निमग्नधीः॥२१॥
His eyes fixed on the path and all other conversation abandoned, he walked absorbed in thought, desiring Sugrīva's friendship with Śrī Rāmacandra.
Passage 22
स तेन ददृशे वीरो वायुपुत्रो महामतिः। कृतकार्यो मुखोल्लाससंलक्षितमनोगतिः॥२२॥
Sugrīva saw the heroic and wise son of the wind returning with his mission accomplished, the brightness of his face revealing what was in his mind.
Passage 23
तमेष सादरं धीमानग्रहीद्रविनन्दनः। सानन्दोल्लासिनयनः प्रत्युत्थानोद्गमादिभिः॥२३॥
The wise son of the sun received him respectfully, rising to meet him and showing other courtesies, his eyes shining with joy.
Passage 24
तमुवाच मरुत्सूनुस्तर्कस्ते सफलोऽभवत्। राम एव स वीरेन्द्र दूराद्यो वीक्षितस्त्वया॥२४॥
The son of the wind told him, “Your conjecture has proved correct. Lord of heroes, the man you saw from afar is indeed Rāma.
Passage 25
यो द्वितीयः स तस्यैव भ्राता ते न समोऽनुजः। सिद्धश्च ते मनःकामो मैत्रीं रामेण यास्यसि॥२५॥
“The second is his younger brother, whose equal does not exist. Your heart's desire is fulfilled: you will enter friendship with Rāma.
Passage 26
जितं च विद्धि बलिनं बालिनं कपिपुङ्गवम्। भोक्ष्यसे किल किष्किन्धापुरीराज्यमकण्टकम्॥२६॥
“Count mighty Vālin, foremost of monkeys, already conquered. You will enjoy the unobstructed kingdom of the city of Kiṣkindhā.
Passage 27
अकैतवा रामचन्द्रे मैत्री समनुपालय। प्रायेण गुरवो देवाः सुहृदश्च न कैतवैः॥२७॥
“Maintain guileless friendship with Rāmacandra. Teachers, gods, and friends generally do not belong to those who practice deceit.
Passage 28
भाग्यवानसि सुग्रीव रामेणासाद्य मित्रताम्। दुर्लभं दास्यमप्यस्य तत्र मैत्री कुतस्तराम्॥२८॥
“Sugrīva, you are fortunate to attain friendship with Rāma. Even service to him is rare—how much more so friendship!
Passage 29
कृपादृष्ट्यैव तस्येदं सम्पन्नमिति विद्धि भोः। देवा अपि यतस्तस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः॥२९॥
“Know, sir, that this has been accomplished solely by his gracious glance, for even the gods continually long to see him.
Passage 30
महाशयो महावीरो महसाप्रतिमश्च सः। तस्य मैत्रीं भवान् लब्ध्वा किं किं नो लप्स्यते शुभम्॥३०॥
“He is noble-hearted, a mighty hero, and unequaled in splendor. Having gained his friendship, what good thing will you not obtain?”
Passage 31
हनुमदुदीरितेन वचसा दिननाथसुतो रघुपतिमित्रभावमभिलाषुक आर्तिहरः। सपदि दिदृक्षयेव खलु तस्य सहर्षमना इदमवदद्वचोऽमलमुदीक्ष्य समीरसुतम्॥३१॥
Hearing Hanumān's words, the son of the sun became eager for friendship with the Lord of the Raghus, remover of distress, and at once longed to see him. Joyful at heart, he looked upon the son of the wind and spoke these pure words.
