Chapter context and opening material

Led by Agastya, the afflicted sages reach Rāma near Ṛṣyamūka and confess that their offense against Śabarī caused the collapse of their rites. Rāma restores their fire and river, yet makes the remedy precise: an offense against him can be borne, but their condemnation of his devotee is destructive, so Śabarī herself must be asked to forgive them. He calls her a great yogin whose foot dust sanctifies a non-tīrtha and sends the sages back to her forest dwelling. The Sages Reach Rāma
