Rāvaṇa recruits Mārīca for his plan to abduct Sītā. They travel to Pañcavaṭī, where Rāvaṇa assumes the guise of a mendicant brahmin and Mārīca becomes a wondrous golden deer. They wait for an opening while Rāma's household completes its daily service to the sages and the poor. Rāvaṇa Instructs Mārīca

Passage 1

ब्रह्मोवाच— संक्षयाद् बन्धुवर्गाणां निग्रहाच्च निजस्वसुः। मर्त्येन निहितं मेने पदं दशसु मूर्धसु॥१॥

Brahmā said: From the destruction of his circle of kinsmen and the assault upon his own sister, Rāvaṇa felt that a mortal had planted his foot upon all ten of his heads.

Passage 2

तत आहूय मारीचनामानं राक्षसं खलः। इदं रहसि संस्थाय मन्त्रयामास रावणः॥२॥

Then the wicked Rāvaṇa summoned the rākṣasa named Mārīca, sat with him in private, and began this consultation.

Passage 3

हे मारीच सखे भ्रातः श्रावि भवतापि यत्। कृतं मर्त्येन केनापि विप्रियं मम तादृशम्॥३॥

“Mārīca, my friend and brother, you too have heard of the grave injury that some mortal has done to me.

Passage 4

यस्य मे बलिनो वीरा जयशीला भवादृशाः। सम्भावनीयः किं तस्य मर्त्येनापि पराभवः॥४॥

“When I possess mighty, victory-loving heroes such as you, should defeat at the hands of a mortal even be conceivable for me?

स दुष्टस्तापसं वेशं बिभ्रद्भुवनवञ्चकः। भ्रातृदारयुतस्तस्मिन्नास्ते पञ्चवटीवने॥५॥

“That wicked deceiver of the worlds, wearing an ascetic's garb, lives in the Pañcavaṭī forest together with his brother and wife.

Passage 6

तेन मे भगिनी नीता विरूपतां दुष्टबुद्धिना। विनिबद्धमतो वैरं मयि निःशङ्कचेतसा॥६॥

“That evil-minded man disfigured my sister and, with a fearless heart, thereby bound himself in enmity with me.

तस्य वैरतरोरेष फलं प्राप्स्यति दुष्टधीः। ध्रुवमात्मविनाशेन मत्तः सपदि सम्प्रति॥७॥

“That wicked man will now immediately receive from me the fruit of this tree of hostility: his own certain destruction.

Passage 8

प्रथमं तु वधूं तस्य मम स्वस्रूपहासिनीम्। आहर्तास्मि बलात्तस्मात्स्थानात्साहाय्यतस्तव॥८॥

“First, with your aid, I shall forcibly carry away from that place his wife, who mocked my sister's appearance.

Passage 9

त्वं तत्र मृगरूपेण विचरिष्यसि कानने। सीतायाः पुरतो भूत्वा वह स्वर्णमयीं तनुम्॥९॥

“There in the forest you shall roam in the form of a deer. Appear before Sītā bearing a body made of gold.

Passage 10

मोहयित्वा मनस्तस्या दुरात्मानं च तापसम्। तं नेष्यसि सुदूरं त्वं मृगयार्थं समुद्यतम्॥१०॥

“After enchanting her mind, you shall lead that evil ascetic far away when he sets out to hunt you.

Passage 11

अहं तमेव समयं सम्प्राप्य रहसि स्थिताम्। आहर्तास्मि बलात् सीतामतदर्हां मनोरमाम्॥११॥

“Seizing that very opportunity, I shall forcibly abduct the lovely Sītā while she is left alone, though she does not deserve such treatment.

Passage 12

जाने जनकभूपस्य सुता सा हृदयंगमा। अयोनिसम्भवा तेन मर्त्येनैव सुसंगता॥१२॥

“I know that heart-captivating daughter of King Janaka, born from no womb, is perfectly joined to that mortal.

Passage 13

तामानेतास्मि सपदि प्रसह्य स्वां पुरीमहम्। यां जहास ध्रुवं तस्याः करिष्यामि वधोस्थिताम्॥१३॥

“I shall at once bring her forcibly to my city. Because she laughed at my sister, I shall surely place her in mortal fear.

Passage 14

हलप्रलम्बदंष्ट्राभिर्दन्तभीतिभिरञ्जसा। राक्षसीभिः समन्तात्तां भीषयिष्यामि भूरिशः॥१४॥

“I shall have rākṣasī women with plough-like hanging fangs and terrifying teeth surround her and frighten her again and again.

Passage 15

सा मद्भुजान्तरं यावन्नायास्यति भयातुरा। तावत्तां भीषयिष्यन्ति राक्षस्यो राक्षसा अपि॥१५॥

“Until that terrified woman comes within my arms, rākṣasī women and rākṣasa men alike will continue to terrorize her.

Passage 16

आत्मकर्मविपाकं सा ध्रुवं यास्यति जानकी। रामश्च बहुलं शोकमधिकं मरणादपि॥१६॥

“Jānakī will certainly experience the ripened fruit of her own action, while Rāma will undergo immense grief worse even than death.

Passage 17

भवान् करोतु साहाय्यं मम तत्रैव कानने। रक्षःपरिभवोद्भूतं शोकं च हर दुःसहम्॥१७॥

“Assist me there in the forest and remove this unbearable grief born from the humiliation of the rākṣasas.

Passage 18

ध्रुवमात्मविनाशाय परकार्याणि साधवः। साधयन्ति यशोवल्लीं दृढं रोपयितुं भुवि॥१८॥

“Good men surely accomplish another's purpose even at the cost of their own destruction, so as to plant the vine of their fame firmly upon the earth.” The Deceivers Reach Pañcavaṭī

Passage 19

इति सम्मन्त्र्य दुष्टात्मा मारीचेन दशाननः। तथेति तद्वचः श्रुत्वा प्रैस्थातुमुपचक्रमे॥१९॥

After thus consulting with Mārīca, the wicked ten-headed Rāvaṇa heard him say, “So be it,” and prepared to depart.

Passage 20

महान्तं रथमास्थाय स्वर्णरत्नपरिच्छदम्। घोषयन् हरितः सर्वा ययौ मारीचसंयुतः॥२०॥

Mounting a great chariot adorned with gold and jewels, he set out with Mārīca, its rumbling filling every direction.

Passage 21

नभःपथमतिक्रम्य वीरमानी दशाननः। स्रोतावगाहपुण्योदं प्राप पञ्चवटीवनम्॥२१॥

Traveling through the sky, the proud ten-headed warrior reached the forest of Pañcavaṭī, whose sacred waters were entered by flowing streams.

Passage 22

स तत्र स्यन्दनवरादवतीर्य महीखलः। स्वयं बभूव मायावी भिक्षुब्राह्मणवेषभृत्॥२२॥

There the wicked ruler descended from his excellent chariot and, through sorcery, assumed the guise of a mendicant brahmin.

Passage 23

मारीचश्चाभवत्तस्य गृहीत्वाज्ञामखण्डिताम्। सुवर्णहरिणोऽत्यन्तविचित्राङ्गरुहाञ्चितः॥२३॥

Mārīca obeyed his command without reservation and became a golden deer covered with exceedingly wondrous hair.

Passage 24

शृङ्गयुग्ममनोहारी चञ्चत्खुरचतुष्टयः। चञ्चलेक्षणसंशोभी सरूपश्रवणद्वयः॥२४॥

Its pair of horns captivated the mind; its four hooves moved lightly; its shifting eyes shone, and its two ears were beautifully formed.

Passage 25

अपाङ्गदर्शनक्रीडाकारी कलितकौतुकः। नृत्यन्निवाङ्गललितैर्विशल्यन्निव मुहुर्मनः॥२५॥

It played with sidelong glances and displayed enchanting marvels, seeming to dance with graceful limbs and repeatedly drawing the mind free from every other concern.

Passage 26

लोकोत्तरैः सौकुमार्यसौन्दर्यप्लुतिलाघवैः। वशीकुर्वन्निव मनः क्रीडावशितलोचनः॥२६॥

With unearthly delicacy, beauty, buoyancy, and lightness, it seemed to subdue the mind while compelling every eye to follow its play.

Passage 27

वने हरित्तृणान्यदन् विचचार समन्ततः। कूर्दमानः क्वचित्क्वापि नृत्यन् क्वापि स्थिरीभवन्॥२७॥

Eating green grass, it wandered throughout the forest—leaping here, dancing there, and elsewhere suddenly standing still.

Passage 28

तौ मायाबलमाश्रित्य राक्षसौ कुटिलाशयौ। तस्थतुः सुप्रतीक्षन्तौ कालं रन्ध्रगवेषिणौ॥२८॥

Relying upon their magical power, the two deceitful rākṣasas remained there, carefully awaiting the right moment and searching for an opening. Rāma's Household Completes Its Service

Passage 29

तत्र श्रीरामचन्द्रो द्विजमुनिनिवहे भुक्तवत्यन्नमूलं भूयः कृताशीः सानुजजनकजायुक्त आदत्स्वयं च। दत्त्वा शेषं च देवी हितशबरवधूभ्यो वने दुर्गतेभ्यो दीनेभ्यः स्वाश्रितेभ्यो मुनिवरवनितादत्तपात्रं ममार्ज॥२९॥

There, after the assembly of brahmins and sages had eaten rice and roots and offered their blessings, Śrī Rāmacandra himself ate together with his younger brother and Janaka's daughter. The goddess gave what remained to the benevolent Śabara women and to the poor and distressed who depended upon them in the forest, and then washed the vessel given by the wives of the eminent sages. Thus ends Chapter 147, “Rāvaṇa and Mārīca Arrive,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the Dakṣiṇa-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.
