Chapter context and opening material

Agastya welcomes Rāma, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa with the full honors due to guests. He praises Rāma's descent for the protection of dharma, describes the suffering of sages under the rākṣasas, and urges him to rest at Pañcavaṭī while defending the hermit communities. Rāma answers that the austerity and blessings of sages exist for the welfare of the world. Agastya then serves forest food, while Lopāmudrā receives Sītā with affection, and the travelers spend the night in peaceful conversation at the hermitage. Agastya Welcomes the Travelers
