Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— अत्रेर्भगवतो देवी धर्मपत्नी मनस्विनी। अनसूया जनकजां भूषयामास भूषणैः॥१॥
Brahmā said: The noble-minded Anasūyā, venerable Atri's devoted and virtuous wife, adorned the daughter of Janaka with ornaments.
Passage 2
योगसिद्धिसमोपेतैर्दिव्यैः स्रक्चन्दनादिभिः। अभूषयतरां देवी सीतां शीतांशुशीतलाम्॥२॥
With divine garlands, sandal paste, and other gifts endowed with yogic perfection, the lady lovingly adorned Sītā, who was cool and gentle as the moon.
Passage 3
अनसूयोवाच— इदं ते चन्दनं देवि सिद्धमङ्गानुरञ्जनम्। नित्यं नवीनतां बिभ्रन्मम योगप्रभावतः॥३॥
Anasūyā said: “Lady, this perfected sandal paste will beautify your limbs and remain perpetually fresh through the power of my yoga.
Passage 4
अङ्गरागमिमं धृत्वा स्वाङ्गेषु जनकात्मजे। न ग्लास्यसि समं पत्या यान्ती सुमहतः पथः॥४॥
“Daughter of Janaka, when you apply this fragrant paste to your body, you will not grow weary while traveling the very long road beside your husband.
Passage 5
न ते सूर्यकरा देहं ग्लापयिष्यन्ति वर्त्मनि। छायायामिव गच्छन्त्याः सुखं भूरि भविष्यति॥५॥
“The sun's rays will not exhaust your body on the path. You will travel in abundant comfort as though always walking in shade.
Passage 6
न ते रक्षोभवा बाधा तिष्ठन्त्या यत्रकुत्रचित्। भविष्यति महाराजवध्वा अप्यचदुर्गतेः॥६॥
“Wherever you may stay, no danger born of the Rākṣasas will overcome you, though you are a great king's daughter-in-law living amid hardship.
Passage 7
इमानि मत्पतेरस्य योगसिद्धस्य जानकि। आश्रमप्रभवैः पुष्पैः स्रजस्ते विनिवेदिताः॥७॥
“Jānakī, I offer you these garlands made from flowers grown in the hermitage of my husband, who is perfected in yoga.
Passage 8
इमाः सन्ततमम्लाना योगसिद्धिमयीः स्रजः। वहन्ती काननेषु त्वं निःशङ्कं विचरिष्यसि॥८॥
“These garlands, filled with yogic power, will remain perpetually unfaded. Wearing them, you will wander the forests without fear.
Passage 9
त्वं प्रधृष्या न केनापि रक्षसा घोरमायिना। विनापि देवरं कान्तं नोद्वेगं कलयिष्यसि॥९॥
“No Rākṣasa of terrible sorcery will be able to violate you. Even when apart from your beloved husband and his younger brother, you will feel no alarm.
Passage 10
मृगयार्थं हि गतयोरनयोः शून्य आश्रमे। वसन्ती त्वं जनकजे बन्धुपूर्णेव भास्यसि॥१०॥
“Daughter of Janaka, when the two of them leave the empty hermitage to hunt, you will remain there as though surrounded by relatives. Protective Ornaments and Garments
Passage 11
मणिस्वर्णमयान्येतान्यच्छान्याभरणानि ते। प्रयच्छामि सरोजाक्षि पत्युः प्रणयपुष्टये॥११॥
“Lotus-eyed lady, I give you these flawless ornaments of jewels and gold to nourish your husband's loving affection.
Passage 12
इदं ते वसनं दिव्यं प्रयच्छामि मनोरमम्। यत्परीधाय तिष्ठन्तीं न रक्षो धर्षयिष्यति॥१२॥
“I give you this beautiful divine garment. No Rākṣasa will be able to assault you while you wear it.
Passage 13
इयं पद्ममयी माला नित्यमम्लानपङ्कजा। इमां सीते हृदा धृत्वा न त्वां वह्निः प्रधक्ष्यति॥१३॥
“This necklace is formed of lotuses that remain forever unfaded. Sītā, when you wear it upon your heart, fire will not burn you.
Passage 14
भुवि भूमिस्वरूपा त्वं जले जलमयी तथा। वह्नौ वह्निमयी भूत्वा वायौ वायुस्वरूपिणी॥१४॥
“Upon earth you will assume the nature of earth, in water the nature of water, in fire the nature of fire, and in wind the nature of wind.
Passage 15
व्योम्नि व्योममयी भूत्वा प्रवेशं समवाप्स्यसि। पञ्चतत्त्वमयी व्याप्तिर्मद्योगात्ते भविष्यति॥१५॥
“In space you will become one with space and pass through it. Through my yoga you will gain a pervasive form composed of all five elements.
Passage 16
वृष्टिवातातपादीनि निवसन्तीं वनेष्वपि। न त्वामुद्वेजयिष्यन्ति योगसिद्ध्यान्वितामिव॥१६॥
“Although you dwell in forests, rain, wind, heat, and the other hardships will not trouble you, for you will be protected as one endowed with yogic power.
Passage 17
भूयात्ते सर्वदा सौख्यं पत्या सह यथा सुखम्। वसन्त्यनुद्विग्नमना भव कल्याणिनी सदा॥१७॥
“May you always enjoy happiness beside your husband. Live with an untroubled mind and remain blessed forever. The Inexhaustible Cooking Vessel
Passage 18
पाकस्थालीमिमां भद्रे गृहाण गुणवत्तमाम्। यस्यां षड्रससंयुक्तमन्नं नित्यमुपाहितम्॥१८॥
“Blessed lady, accept this excellent cooking vessel, in which food possessing all six flavors is always present.
Passage 19
यं यमिच्छसि पाकार्थं तं तमत्र निभालय। परिवेक्ष्यमाणं भोक्ष्यन्ति सहस्रं कोटयो द्विजाः॥१९॥
“Whatever prepared dish you desire, behold it here. As its food is served, thousands of crores of Brahmins may eat from it.
Passage 20
अतिथिव्रतवत्यास्ते इयं वै व्रतसाधनम्। विनाग्निजलसंयोगमन्नमत्रोपलप्स्यसे॥२०॥
“This vessel will enable you to fulfill your vow of honoring guests. You will obtain food from it without the use of fire or water. Blessings of Protection
Passage 21
गच्छन्तीं प्रविशन्तीं च तिष्ठन्तीं विहितासनाम्। सुप्तां प्रसुप्तां भवतीं रक्षन्तां देवतागणाः॥२१॥
“May the hosts of gods protect you as you travel, enter a dwelling, stand, take your seat, sleep, or rest deeply.
Passage 22
इन्द्रस्त्वां पुरतो रक्षेत्पृष्ठतो वह्निरेव च। यम एकान्ततां रक्षेत् स्नान्तीं वरुण एव च॥२२॥
“May Indra guard you in front and Agni behind. May Yama guard you in solitude and Varuṇa while you bathe.
Passage 23
प्रयान्तीं मारुतो रक्षेदीशस्त्वां पातु सर्वदा। सर्वकार्येषु सर्वत्र त्वां रक्षेत् परमेश्वरः॥२३॥
“May the Wind protect you while you travel and Īśa preserve you always. May the Supreme Lord protect you everywhere and in every undertaking.” The Sages' Wives Welcome Jānakī
Passage 24
ब्रह्मोवाच— इत्थमानखशिखं विभूषिता सिद्धयोगफलाखिलाशिषा। सिद्धयात्रिमुनिभार्यया तथा भोजिता च जनकावनीशजा॥२४॥
Brahmā said: Thus the daughter of King Janaka was adorned from toe to crown with every blessing born of perfected yoga, and the accomplished wife of Sage Atri also fed her.
Passage 25
तुष्टिमाप परमां निजाशये वल्लभेन सहिता तदाश्रमे। वार्तयन्त्यतिमनोज्ञया गिरा संगतेर्वरमुनिन्द्रदारकैः॥२५॥
Together with her beloved in that hermitage, Sītā attained supreme contentment, conversing in exceedingly charming speech with the assembled wives of the eminent sages.
Passage 26
अत्रेः पत्न्या विस्फुरद्योगसिद्धया विभूषितां सुविहिताशिषं ताम्। राजेन्द्रपत्नीं जनकस्य पुत्रीं विलोकयन्त्यो मुनिवर्यदाराः॥२६॥
The wives of the eminent sages gazed upon Janaka's daughter, the wife of a king, now adorned and thoroughly blessed by Atri's wife, whose yogic perfection shone visibly.
Passage 27
स्वैः स्वैर्मनोभिस्तुतुषुर्नितान्तं सख्यो यथा पार्षदचर्यः समस्ताः। प्रीत्या प्रयुक्तां परमाशिषोऽदुर्न तृप्तिमापुश्च मुखं धयन्त्यः॥२७॥
Each delighted in her heart as though all were Sītā's intimate companions and attendants. Moved by affection, they gave her the highest blessings and could not satisfy themselves with gazing upon her face.
Passage 28
हसन्ती क्रीडन्ती किमपि कलयन्ती रहसि तै- र्विलासं सुप्रीतैः प्रवरमुनिदारैर्जनकजा। मुमोदातीवान्तः सदयमनसूयासुविहिते- रनेकैः सत्कारैः प्रतिपदमतिप्रीतहृदया॥२८॥
Laughing, playing, and sharing private delights with the loving wives of the foremost sages, the daughter of Janaka rejoiced deeply. At every moment her heart overflowed with happiness through the many gracious honors tenderly arranged by Anasūyā. Thus ends Chapter 122, “Anasūyā's Welcome,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the Dakṣiṇa-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.
