Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— इति ब्रुवत्सु दीनेषु मुनीन्द्रेषु तदा वचः। अवतेरुर्दिवो देवा इन्द्राद्या ध्वंसितश्रियः॥१॥
Brahmā said: As the afflicted lords of sages spoke these words, Indra and the other gods—whose glory had been destroyed—descended from heaven.
Passage 2
ये मेघनादेन महोग्रधन्वना पराजिता इन्द्रपुरःसुराः सुराः। ते धातुराज्ञामधिगम्य भूयसीं श्रीरामसंदर्शनसौख्यसस्पृहाः॥२॥
Those gods of Indra's city who had been defeated by the terrible bowman Meghanāda received Brahmā's weighty command and longed for the joy of seeing Śrī Rāma.
Passage 3
वसन्तं चित्रकूटाद्रौ विज्ञाय प्रभुमीश्वरम्। आययुस्त्रिदशाः सर्वे उत्कण्ठाविष्टमानसाः॥३॥
Learning that the sovereign Lord dwelt upon Mount Citrakūṭa, all the gods came with hearts filled with longing.
Passage 4
अत्रेर्भगवतो योगिवर्यस्याश्रमसंस्थितम्। श्रीरामं ददृशुर्देवाः सेवाकरणसम्मुखाः॥४॥
At the hermitage of the venerable Atri, foremost of yogins, the gods saw Śrī Rāma and approached, eager to serve him.
Passage 5
अत्रिं प्रणम्य योगीन्द्रं पुरस्तादभूरिवर्चसम्। अथो ददृशुरौदार्यसागरं राममद्भुतम्॥५॥
They first bowed to Atri, the greatly radiant lord of yogins, and then beheld wondrous Rāma, the ocean of generosity.
Passage 6
सहस्रमक्ष्णां दधदेवनिश्चितो रामेण साक्षाद्भगवान् पुरन्दरः। अथो सभक्ति प्रणनाम तं पुरः स चाशिषा वर्धयदेनमुञ्चकैः॥६॥
The thousand-eyed Indra, certain that Rāma was the Lord himself, bowed before him with devotion. Rāma in turn honored him warmly with a blessing.
Passage 7
अन्यानपि सुरान् नत्वा रामो राजीवलोचनः। सभक्तिश्रद्धमवनावासयामास पूजितान्॥७॥
Lotus-eyed Rāma also greeted the other gods and, honoring them with devotion and reverence, seated them upon the ground.
Passage 8
अत्रिस्तान् पूजयाञ्चक्रे वासवाद्यान् सुरेश्वरान्। सुस्थानासनवर्येषु तत ऊचे स्मितान्वितम्॥८॥
Atri honored Indra and the other celestial rulers, gave them excellent seats in a fitting place, and then spoke with a smile. Atri Welcomes the Celestial Assembly
Passage 9
अत्रिरुवाच— शुभं ममैतन्महदेव सम्प्रति श्रीरामपादाम्बुजसंगमादभूत्। यदाश्रमद्वारमुपागता अमी महामहोजःप्रसराः सुरेश्वराः॥९॥
Atri said: “Through contact with Śrī Rāma's lotus feet, great good has now come to me: these celestial rulers, who spread vast and brilliant splendor, have reached the gate of my hermitage.
Passage 10
पुरन्दरो हुतभुग्दण्डपाणिः क्रव्यादनाथो वरुणो वायवश्च। कुबेर ईशः पतयो दिशामिमे प्रजेश्वरा ये मरीच्यादयोऽमी॥१०॥
“Here are Indra; Agni; staff-bearing Yama; the lord of flesh-eating beings; Varuṇa; the Winds; Kubera; Īśa; the guardians of the directions; and the lords of creatures beginning with Marīci.
Passage 11
मरुद्गणाः सर्व इमे सुसंगता ममाश्रमे वसवश्चैव रुद्राः। साध्या आदित्या ग्रहा ये च विश्वेदेवा अमी पितरश्चोष्मपाद्याः॥११॥
“All the Maruts have assembled in my hermitage, together with the Vasus, Rudras, Sādhyas, Ādityas, planets, Viśvedevas, and the ancestral hosts beginning with the Uṣmapas.
Passage 12
चतुर्मुखो ब्रह्म पठन्नखण्डं महोपवीती साक्षसूत्रः कमण्डलुम्। दधत्करे सैष प्रजापतीनां पतिः स्वयं संगतो ह्यत्रजातः॥१२॥
“Four-faced Brahmā himself has also arrived here—the great wearer of the sacred thread, continuously reciting, bearing a rosary and water pot in his hand, and presiding over the progenitors.
Passage 13
अस्यैव वीरस्य धृतासिधन्वनो ह्यक्षीणतूणीरभृतो हृतारेः। अन्वीक्षमाणाः शरणं सर्व एते ममाश्रमं भूरि विभूषयन्ति॥१३॥
“All of them look to this hero alone for refuge: he bears sword and bow, carries inexhaustible quivers, and takes away his enemies. By their presence they richly adorn my hermitage.
Passage 14
अस्यांशविभूतिभ्यः सद्भ्यः सूर्यांशुवत्पृथक्। नमो मे सर्वदेवेभ्य एभ्यः सद्भ्यः प्रजाहिते॥१४॥
“I bow to all these venerable gods who work for the welfare of creatures. They are distinct manifestations of his own portion, like separate rays of the sun. Atri Invites the Gods to Appeal
Passage 15
जानामि सर्व एवैते रक्षोनाथेन विद्रुताः। स्वधामसंक्षयाक्लिष्टाः प्रार्थनार्थमिहागताः॥१५॥
“I know that all of them have been driven away by the lord of the Rākṣasas. Afflicted by the ruin of their own domains, they have come here to make their plea.
Passage 16
युगपत्प्रार्थयन्त्वेते रघूणां पतिमागता:। स्वस्वदुःखनिवृत्त्यर्थं देवोऽसौ शमयिष्यति॥१६॥
“Now that they have reached the lord of the Raghus, let them petition him together for relief from their individual sorrows. This Lord will bring them peace.
Passage 17
जानेऽहं रक्षसा घोररूपिणा विंशबाहुना। दशकन्धरभीमेन यूयं विप्रकृताश्चिरात्॥१७॥
“I know that for a long time you have been wronged by the terrifying ten-headed Rākṣasa with twenty arms and a dreadful form.
Passage 18
तस्याश्रयाद्बलिनो राक्षसेन्द्राः सुबाहुमारीचमुखा महोग्राः। विध्वंसयन्तो जगदेव कृत्स्नं क्रूरात्मनो विचरन्तीह मर्त्यान्॥१८॥
“Protected by him, mighty and savage Rākṣasa chiefs led by Subāhu and Mārīca roam among mortals with cruel hearts, laying waste to the entire world.
Passage 19
वनेचरा बलिनो बालिमुख्याः कृत्स्नं जगद्दुःखमयं विधाय। कुर्वन्ति राज्यं नगरेषु लोकान्निपीडयन्तीति निवेद्यमस्मै॥१९॥
“Mighty forest-dwellers led by Vāli have filled the whole world with misery and exercise dominion over cities while oppressing their people. Tell Rāma of this.
Passage 20
सम्प्रार्थितः कारुणिकौघमौलिरयं विधास्यत्यवनीमवश्यम्। निष्कण्टकां क्षिप्तसुरारिजातां सुखाकरिष्यत्यभयांश्च युष्मान्॥२०॥
“When petitioned, this crown of the compassionate will surely make the earth free of thorns and cast down the enemies of the gods. He will make you happy and fearless.
Passage 21
उत्क्षिप्तकालासिविशीर्णशत्रुर्विजेष्यतेऽसौ भुवनेषु वीरः। आशीर्गणैरर्पित उच्चकैर्वः सुवर्णसिंहासनगो विभास्यति॥२१॥
“This hero will conquer throughout the worlds, his uplifted, death-like sword shattering his enemies. Raised high by your assembled blessings, he will shine upon a golden throne.
Passage 22
इत्याभाष्य प्रपन्नांस्तान् रक्षोभीतान् सुपर्वणः। श्रीराममुखमालोक्य तस्थिवान् मुनिपुङ्गवः॥२२॥
Having thus addressed those gods who had sought refuge in fear of the Rākṣasas, the eminent sage turned toward Śrī Rāma's face and stood silently.
Passage 23
अथाब्रुवन् ब्रह्मशिवेन्द्रमुख्या रक्षोऽधिपद्रावितसूरिवीर्याः। प्रजाहितप्रेप्सव आतुराश्च प्रकाममुद्भ्रान्तधियः प्रपन्नाः॥२३॥
Then the gods led by Brahmā, Śiva, and Indra—whose divine prowess had been routed by the Rākṣasa king—spoke. Eager for the welfare of all beings, distressed, deeply bewildered, and seeking refuge, they began their appeal. Thus ends Chapter 120, “The Arrival of the Gods,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the Dakṣiṇa-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.
