Chapter context and opening material

The Rākṣasas maintain outward rites, but their worship is ruled by passion, darkness, violence, and self-interest. Brahmā leads the gods to Viṣṇu at the Milk Ocean and asks him to relieve the worlds. Viṣṇu promises to descend in four forms in Daśaratha's house and directs the gods to take birth among humans, monkeys, birds, bears, and other creatures. The Tāmasic Religion of the Rākṣasas

Passage 4

Passage 5

Passage 8
