ब्रह्मोवाच— तस्यां निशि व्यतीतायां नागकन्या सुलोचना। भार्या रक्षःकुमारस्य सस्मार जनकं निजम्॥१॥
Brahmā said: When that night had passed, Sulochanā, serpent princess and wife of the Rākṣasa prince, remembered her father.
Passage 2
स तत्स्मृतिक्षणे साक्षात् प्रादुरासीदहीश्वरः। देवः शेषमहानागः स्वप्रजाशुभवाञ्छकः॥२॥
At the very instant she remembered him, the divine serpent lord Śeṣa appeared in person, desiring the welfare of his offspring.
Passage 3
योषापुरं राक्षसराजसूनोर्विभूषयन् स्वेन निजेन तेजसा। अहीश्वरः सन्मुनिवेशधारी जटाधरः पिङ्गलभास्विलोचनः॥३॥
The serpent lord, dressed as a venerable sage, with matted locks and shining tawny eyes, illuminated the women's palace of the Rākṣasa king's son with his own radiance.
Passage 4
आजगाम स्वकन्यायाः पार्श्वं भूरिवरप्रदः। अनिमेषदृगत्यर्थमानन्दपरिवर्धनः॥४॥
The giver of abundant boons came to his daughter's side, his unwinking gaze greatly increasing her joy.
Passage 5
तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य साक्षात्स्वजनकं सती। सहर्षविनयोत्कण्ठमुपतस्थौ सुलोचना॥५॥
Seeing her own father arrive in person, virtuous Sulochanā eagerly approached him with joy and humility.

सम्पूज्य सादरं पश्चात्पाद्यार्घाचमनादिभिः। शुभमासनमास्तीर्य भेजे तं प्रश्रयादिभिः॥६॥
She reverently worshiped him with water for his feet, an offering, water for sipping, and the other courtesies; then she spread an auspicious seat and attended him with deference. A Father's Concern

तामुवाचैष वात्सल्यादुद्भूतपुलकाङ्कुरः। चिराद्दृष्टासि पुत्रि त्वं कच्चित्ते सर्वतः सुखम्॥७॥
His body budding with horripilation from paternal love, he said: “Daughter, I have seen you after so long. Is all well with you in every respect?

असि त्वं सुखिनी गेहे कच्चित्स्वजनबन्धुभिः। कच्चिदाज्ञाप्रतिहता तव स्वजनबन्धुषु॥८॥
“Are you happy in this home among your new relatives? Is your authority honored among your household and kin?
Passage 9
कच्चित्ते हृदयं वत्से रमते स्वजनादिषु। कच्चित्तवाभिलषितं प्रयत्यस्त्रेश्वरः॥९॥
“Child, does your heart take pleasure in your family here? Does the lord of weapons strive to fulfill what you desire?
Passage 10
कच्चित्ते श्वसुरो वीरस्त्रैलोक्यविजयी बली। जगज्जयोपलब्धैस्त्वामभीष्टैस्तोषयत्युत॥१०॥
“Does your mighty father-in-law, heroic conqueror of the three worlds, please you with the desired treasures obtained through his world-conquests?
Passage 11
कच्चित्तव सती श्वश्रूर्नाम्ना मन्दोदरी तु या। सादरं सर्ववार्तासु त्वां पुरस्कुरुते भृशम्॥११॥
“Does your virtuous mother-in-law Mandodarī respectfully give you precedence in all household affairs?

कच्चित्ते हृदयं लग्नं श्वसुरस्य निकेतने। शश्वत्पितृगृहासक्तिं विस्मृत्य स्वस्थमस्त्युत॥१२॥
“Has your heart become settled and content in your father-in-law's home, leaving behind its constant attachment to your father's house?

कञ्चिन्मातृविसंश्लेषो बाधते न च ते मनः। कञ्चिद्वसनभूषाढ्यैः पूर्यते ते मनःस्पृहा॥१३॥
“I hope separation from your mother does not trouble your mind. Are your wishes fulfilled with abundant garments and ornaments?
Passage 14
कच्चित्ते दासिकाः सौम्याश्चक्षुःसूचितकारिकाः। समये त्वोपसीदन्ति कच्चित्सद्भोगसम्पदः॥१४॥
“Do gentle maidservants who understand the indications of your eyes attend you at the proper time? Do you possess the riches needed for fine enjoyment?
Passage 15
कच्चित्स्मरसि कल्याणि वासं भोगवतीपुरे। कञ्चित्तत्रत्यलोकेषु स्निग्धासि त्वं पुरा यथा॥१५॥
“Blessed daughter, do you remember your life in the city of Bhogavatī? Are you still as affectionate toward its people as before?
Passage 16
कच्चिन्मातृपितृश्रेष्ठः पितृपक्षजनस्तव। स्मरणेऽपि समायाति ऋद्धायाः पतिवेश्मनि॥१६॥
“When remembered, do your distinguished maternal and paternal relatives come to visit you in your prosperous husband's home?

इत्यादि बहुधा शेषो वात्सल्येन सुविक्लवः। कथयित्वा वचस्तस्यै साश्रुनेत्रो बभूव ह॥१७॥

Passage 18
ततः सा पद्मपत्राक्षी पितृवात्सल्यविक्लवा। उदश्रुनयना किञ्चिदुवाच सुखिताशया॥१८॥
Then lotus-eyed Sulochanā, overcome by her father's love and with tears rising in her eyes, spoke with a heart made happy.

चिरादभिलषितास्म्यद्य जातं मे सुमहत्सुखम्। अभून्मे सुदिनं चाद्य तात त्वद्दर्शनोत्सवात्॥१९॥
“Today my long-cherished desire has been fulfilled and immense happiness has arisen. Father, this has become a blessed day through the festival of seeing you.

अपि मे सुखिनी माता प्रजासन्ततवत्सला। गर्भधारणपोषाभ्यां यया सम्पालितास्म्यहम्॥२०॥
“Is my mother well—she who continually loves her children and who sustained me by carrying me in her womb and nourishing me?

अपि मां जननी सा मे कदाचित्कञ्चिदात्मना। स्मरति स्नेहवद्यस्यां हृदयं मे प्रतिक्षणम्॥२१॥
“Does my loving mother ever remember me? My heart dwells upon her at every moment.

अपि त्वं गृह्यवार्तासु कदाचित्स्मृतवान्नु माम्। शयने चासने पाने भोजने च प्रसंगतः॥२२॥
“Do you ever remember me amid household affairs—while resting, sitting, drinking, or dining?

अपि मे सोदरस्तात स नित्यं सुखमेधते। यो मां नयति सम्प्रीत्या मातृदर्शनलालसाम्॥२३॥
“Father, is my brother always prospering—the one who would lovingly take me home when I long to see my mother?
Passage 24
अप्युत्सवा बहुविधास्तव सन्ति दिने दिने। कञ्चिदुह्यामते तात ममाकारणकर्मणि॥२४॥
“You have many celebrations day after day. Father, amid those rites, do you ever remember me even without a special occasion?
Passage 25
सर्वे भवन्तः सुखिनो भोगवत्यां निवासिनः। विषीदाम्यहमेवैका वियुक्ता सकलैश्चिरात्॥२५॥
“All of you dwelling in Bhogavatī are happy together; I alone grieve, long separated from everyone.
Passage 26
द्रष्टुमुत्कण्ठितात्यर्थमस्मि वः सकलानहम्। सुहृदो बान्धवान्नित्यं सोदरान् स्निग्धचेतसः॥२६॥
“I yearn intensely to see you all—my friends, relatives, brothers, and everyone whose heart is affectionate toward me.
Passage 27
नित्यं मम मनस्तात भवतां दर्शनोत्सुकम्। ऋद्धापि राक्षसेन्द्रस्य सम्पद्यत्र न रोचते॥२७॥
“Father, my mind is always eager to see you. Although surrounded here by the Rākṣasa king's prosperity, I find no delight in it.

द्रक्ष्यामि मातुर्वदनं कदा नु सुखदायकम्। इत्युत्कण्ठावशं चित्तं विश्राम्यति न कुत्रचित्॥२८॥
“‘When shall I see my mother's joy-giving face?’ Overpowered by this longing, my heart finds rest nowhere.
Passage 29
सम्पच्च बहुला तात श्वसुरस्य गृहे मम। भाविनी त्वत्प्रसादेन ततोऽपि खलु भूयसी॥२९॥
“Father, I possess abundant wealth in my father-in-law's house, and by your grace it will surely become greater still.
Passage 30
साक्षादनुगृहाणेमां निजापत्यप्रजा इह। यासामुत्कण्ठितं चेतो भवतां दर्शनोत्सवे॥३०॥
“Please directly bless these children of your own daughter, whose hearts long for the festival of seeing you.
Passage 31
मातामहे त्वयि भृशं मातुले सोदरे च मे। अमीषां मदपत्यानां निमग्नं सुचिरान्मनः॥३१॥
“The minds of these children of mine have long been deeply attached to you, their maternal grandfather, and to my brother, their maternal uncle.
Passage 32
मातृपक्षसुहृद्बन्धून् सुधाशीतलदर्शनान्। दिदृक्षन्ति सदा ह्येते तवापत्यप्रजाजनाः॥३२॥
“These descendants of yours always wish to see their friends and relatives on their mother's side, whose very sight is cooling as nectar.

शीतलः खलु पक्षोऽयं मातृसम्बन्धिबान्धवः। न येषूत्कर्षामर्षो वा न चापि प्रतियोगिता॥३३॥
“Relatives on the mother's side are truly a gentle refuge: among them there is neither resentment at another's success nor rivalry. Śeṣa Honors His Daughter
Passage 34
एवमाभाष्य जनकं चिरोत्कण्ठावशान्तरा। स्वागतस्याकरोत्तस्य पानभोजनसंविधाः॥३४॥
Having spoken thus to her father, her heart governed by long yearning, Sulochanā arranged the drinks, food, and other provisions of welcome for him.
Passage 35
सुलोचनायै प्रददावहीन्द्रो महोत्तमान् नागमणीन् सहर्षम्। मात्रा भृशं स्निग्धहृदा दुहित्रे सम्प्रेषितान् स्वेन तथोपनीतान्॥३५॥
