ब्रह्मोवाच— श्रुत्वा सुलोचना वाक्यमुवाच वदतां वरः। रक्षःपतेः सुतो वीरो मेघनादो जिगीषुकः॥१॥
Brahmā said: Hearing Sulochanā's words, heroic Meghanāda, son of the Rākṣasa lord, eager for conquest and foremost among speakers, replied.
Passage 2
अलं मृषाप्रशंसाभिर्मम नागपतेः सुते। क नु मे विक्रमो लोके भवत्या लक्षितः प्रिये॥२॥
“Enough of falsely praising me, daughter of the serpent king. Beloved, what deed of valor have you actually seen me perform in this world?

को न प्रियजनैस्तन्वि स्वगृहेषु प्रशस्यते। विगुणेऽपि गुणा भान्ति प्रियत्वं चैतदेव हि॥३॥
“Slender one, who is not praised at home by those who love him? Affection alone makes virtues appear even in one who has none.
Passage 4
इदानीमपि लोलाक्षि न मे सार्थकतां ययौ। अन्यत्र परिरम्भात्ते पीतं दोर्दण्डयोर्युगम्॥४॥
“Even now, restless-eyed one, my pair of staff-like arms has found no fulfillment except in drinking the delight of your embrace.
Passage 5
पटवासैरिव इलोकैर्मम दिक्चक्रचुम्बिभिः। सांसदो वीरचर्याणां कदा नु सुरभीकृताः॥५॥
“When will assemblies devoted to heroic deeds be perfumed, as though by fragrant powder, with my exploits that touch the whole circle of directions?
Passage 6
दिक्कुम्भिकुम्भतटभूर्मदजम्बालशोषणः। क्व मे ज्वलति लोकेषु प्रतापाह्वो धनञ्जयः॥६॥
“Where in the worlds does my fire called prowess blaze, drying the muddy streams of ichor upon the temples of the elephants of the quarters?
Passage 7
कदा नु मद्रथोद्धोषः कल्पान्तघनघर्घरः। वित्रस्तानां सुरस्त्रीणां कर्णेष्वतिथितां गतः॥७॥
“When will the roar of my chariot, rumbling like the clouds at the end of an age, become an unwelcome guest in the ears of terrified celestial women?

मम शब्दध्वनिस्तन्वि परिरुद्धेशवक्षसाम्। निजस्त्रीणां कर्णपुटैराकर्णित उदित्वरः॥८॥
“Slender one, when will my resounding battle cry be heard by the wives of rulers whose chests my forces have hemmed in?

गत्वा स्वर्गपुरोपान्ते धनुर्ज्या घोरराविणी। कदा खलु कुरङ्गाक्षि दृढमास्फालिता मया॥९॥
“Doe-eyed one, when shall I reach the outskirts of heaven and forcefully twang my terrible-sounding bowstring?
Passage 10
पलायन्त्याः सुरान् हित्वा कबरीव सुरस्त्रियः। कदासि लतिका युद्धेष्वाकृष्टा मयका प्रिये॥१०॥
“Beloved, when in battle shall the creeper-like tresses of celestial women, fleeing after the gods have abandoned them, be seized by me?
Passage 11
व्यर्थं किं स्तौषि पद्माक्षि रतिमात्रसुखप्रदम्। मामुद्धरमहावीरशिरोनत्यभिलाषुकम्॥११॥
“Lotus-eyed one, why vainly praise me merely because I give the pleasure of love? Inspire me instead to desire the bowing heads of mighty heroes.

अद्य खल्वधिकख्यातेः पितुः संसदि वृत्तिमान्। समश्रौषमहं वाचं दशास्याब्जवनालितीम्॥१२॥
“Today, while attending the assembly of my exceedingly renowned father, I heard words that were like frost upon the lotus-grove of the ten-headed king's family.
Passage 13
को न कुक्षिभरिर्लोके स्वपिति स्वस्थवन्निशि। विरलः खलु यो दोर्भ्यां समुत्खातारिशल्यकः॥१३॥
“What mere belly-filler does not sleep soundly at night? Rare indeed is the man who uproots the thorn of his enemies with his own arms.

अनुत्सादितहृच्छल्यभूतभूरिद्विषद्बलः। क आप्नोतु निशि स्वापं वीरमानी सचेतनः॥१४॥
“What conscious man who considers himself a hero can sleep at night while the vast force of his foes remains like an uneradicated thorn in his heart?
Passage 15
एतदेवायुषो नाम साफल्यं हरिणेक्षणे। यद्विद्विन्मौलिरत्नानि लुठेयुः पादपीठयोः॥१५॥
“Doe-eyed one, life is fulfilled only when the crown jewels of one's enemies roll upon one's footstool.

वनितायूथमध्येषु गुणानुल्लपतां नृणाम्। अपराभूतवीराणां को विशेषो मृगीपतेः॥१६॥
“What distinguishes men who boast of their virtues among groups of women, yet have subdued no heroes, from a lord of deer?” He Vows to Honor His Father Through Conquest

अहं निजबलोद्रेकादुच्छूनं दोर्युगं दधत्। अमर्षित इवात्यर्थमद्य तातेन संसदि॥१७॥
“Today in the assembly, as I bore my pair of arms swollen with the surge of my strength, my father seemed exceedingly displeased with me.
Passage 18
सोऽहं पराननिजित्य यदि वर्तेय तृप्तवत्। संकुत्सनीयस्तत्पित्रा त्रिजगज्जयमिच्छता॥१८॥
“If I were to remain content without conquering my foes, I would deserve the scorn of that father who desires victory over the three worlds.
Passage 19
जगज्जयमहोत्कर्षः क्व मे तातो दशाननः। क्व चाहं सुस्थितं मन्यो रतिप्रीत्या मृगीदृशाम्॥१९॥
“How far apart are my ten-headed father, supremely exalted by world-conquest, and I, who deem myself secure merely through the loving pleasure of doe-eyed women!
Passage 20
शोभते तस्य भोगोऽपि यूथेषु हरिणीदृशाम्। येन बोभुज्यते लक्ष्मीः शत्रुमण्डलगामिनी॥२०॥
“Enjoyment among groups of doe-eyed women suits only the hero who has first enjoyed the fortune possessed by the circle of his enemies.
Passage 21
लुण्ठितारिपुरश्रीभ्यां भुजाभ्यां परिरम्भणम्। अत्यर्थं रोचते मह्यं मानिन्या हरिणीदृशः॥२१॥
“Only arms that have plundered the splendor of enemy cities make the embrace of a proud doe-eyed woman truly delightful to me.
Passage 22
यस्य पुत्रः पराभूय परानायाति मन्दिरे। स पुमान् स्वस्थवच्छेते जातवंशधुरन्धरः॥२२॥
“A man sleeps at ease when his son returns home after subduing his enemies, born to bear the burden of the lineage.
Passage 23
सोऽहं परान् पराभूय त्रिजगद्गर्भवर्तिनः। कदा रञ्जयितास्म्यङ्घ्री पितुर्मौलिमणित्विषा॥२३॥
“When shall I subdue the foes dwelling throughout the three worlds and color my father's feet with the radiance of the jewels upon their crowns?
Passage 24
इत्थमेवानुशोचामि दिवारात्रमहं प्रिये। ज्येष्ठः खलु दशास्यस्य तनयो वीरमानिनः॥२४॥
“Beloved, this is what I lament day and night, for I am the eldest son of the ten-headed king, who takes pride in valor.” Sulochanā's Companion Encourages Him
Passage 25
ब्रह्मोवाच— एवं वदन्तमेवामुं वीरमानिनमुद्धतम्। सुलोचनायाः सख्येका वाक्यमेतदवोचत॥२५॥
Brahmā said: As the proud and haughty warrior spoke in this way, one of Sulochanā's companions addressed him.
Passage 26
सत्यं वदसि हे कान्त त्वं हि रक्षोमहेशितुः। कुमारः कुलधौरेयो वोढुं सर्वं भरं क्षमः॥२६॥
“Beloved prince, what you say is true. You are the son of the great Rākṣasa lord, the bearer of your lineage, capable of carrying its entire burden.
Passage 27
किं त्वेषैव तव प्रेष्ठ त्रिजगद्विजयेन्दिरा। मत्सखी वीरपतिका वीरसूर्वीरसुस्नुषा॥२७॥
“Yet this very beloved of yours—my companion, wife of a hero, future mother of heroes, and noble daughter-in-law of a hero—is herself your fortune of victory over the three worlds.
Passage 28
नितम्बरथयोगिनी कुचतुरङ्गयुगमोद्धुरा स्मितद्युतिकृपाणिनी तनुरुचित्रजानीकिनी। चलद्भ्रुकुटिचापिनी नयनतूणवीक्षाशरा गतिद्विरदशालिनी सुवसनाञ्चलोद्यद्ध्वजा॥२८॥
“Her hips form a chariot, her pair of breasts its proud horses, her flashing smile a sword, and the lovely hairs of her body a wondrous army. Her moving brows are a bow, her eyes a quiver whose glances are arrows, her gait a line of elephants, and the uplifted edge of her fine garment a banner.
Passage 29
निरस्तशिशुताबला तरुणिमप्रतापोन्नतिर्निखाततनुरोमराजिजयसूचकस्तम्भिनी। इयं सुभग मत्सखी भुवनजेत्रलक्ष्मीरिव क्षणक्षणसुखप्रदा भवतु ते सदैव स्थिरा॥२९॥
“Having cast off childhood's weakness, she rises in the power of youth, the line of fine hair upon her body planted like a victory pillar. Fortunate prince, may this companion of mine remain forever as your world-conquering fortune, granting delight at every moment.” Meghanāda Is Reconciled
Passage 30
इत्थमुत्साह्यमानोऽसौ प्रियभार्यावयस्यया। अरीरमत सानन्दं मेघनादो महामनाः॥३०॥
Thus encouraged by his beloved wife's companion, noble-minded Meghanāda joyfully took delight with Sulochanā.

स्थितः पयःफेनसमूहशुभ्रे वरोपधाने मृदुचारुतल्पे। निनाय रात्रिं स सुलोचनाया मुहुः परीरम्भसुखाब्धिमग्नः॥३१॥
