Passage 1

ब्रह्मोवाच— दूषणेन त्रिशिरसा विद्युज्जिह्वखरादिभिः। सुदृढचित्तै रक्षोभिः सहितो राक्षसेश्वरः॥१॥

Brahmā said: The lord of the Rākṣasas was accompanied by resolute warriors including Dūṣaṇa, Triśiras, Vidyujjihva, and Khara.

Passage 2

बलिना कुम्भकर्णेन निजाज्ञावशवर्तिना। स त्रैलोक्यं विनिर्जेतुं लङ्कापुर्या विनिर्ययौ॥२॥

With mighty Kumbhakarṇa obedient to his command, he departed from Laṅkā to conquer the three worlds.

Passage 3

महता राक्षसौघेन धरणीं नमयन् बलात्। आत्मगेहाद्विनिर्यातः कृताशीर्ब्राह्मणोत्तमैः॥३॥

Blessed by eminent Brahmins, he left his home with a vast Rākṣasa host whose force seemed to bend the earth.

Passage 4

पुलस्त्यमुख्यैर्मुनिभिः स्वस्तिपुण्याहवाचनम्। विधाय राक्षसश्रेष्ठः प्रतस्थौ बलसंवृतः॥४॥

After Pulastya and the other sages pronounced blessings and auspicious formulas, the foremost Rākṣasa set out surrounded by his army.

Passage 5

सुगुप्तः पुरतः पश्चाच्चमूभिर्वामदक्षयोः। मध्ये महाचमूयुक्तः प्रतस्थौ विजिगीषुकः॥५॥

Intent on conquest, he advanced in the center of a great host, well guarded by forces before, behind, to the left, and to the right.

Passage 6

सरितः सागरा नद्यः शैलाः काननगह्वराः। आच्छादितास्तच्चमूभिर्भीषणाभिः समन्ततः॥६॥

His terrifying forces covered rivers, seas, streams, mountains, forests, and caverns on every side.

अङ्गान् बङ्गान् कलिङ्गांश्च महाराष्ट्रांश्च केरलान्। कर्णाटान् करहाटांश्च वरहाटान् वराटकान्॥७॥

He overran Aṅga, Vaṅga, Kaliṅga, Mahārāṣṭra, Kerala, Karṇāṭa, Karahāṭa, Varahāṭa, and Varāṭaka.

Passage 8

लाटान् भोटान् कुन्तलांश्च द्रविडान् कोङ्कणांस्तथा। त्रिपुरां कामतां चैव कामरूपांस्तथाध्वकान्॥८॥

He conquered Lāṭa, Bhoṭa, Kuntala, Draviḍa, Koṅkaṇa, Tripurā, Kāmatā, Kāmarūpa, and the regions along the roads.

Passage 9

चोलांश्च चालदेशांश्च त्रिगर्तानटकांस्तथा। सौराष्ट्रांश्चैव पाण्ड्यांश्च मलूनुत्कलकांस्तथा॥९॥

He subdued Cola, Cāla country, Trigarta, Naṭaka, Saurāṣṭra, Pāṇḍya, Malūna, and Utkalaka.

Passage 10

मलयान् म्लेच्छदेशांश्च गान्धारान् कापिलांस्तथा। जम्बूं काशीं च काश्मीरान् वाल्हीकान् मगधांस्तथा॥१०॥

He conquered Malaya, the lands of the Mlecchas, Gandhāra, Kāpila, Jambū, Kāśī, Kashmir, Vālhīka, and Magadha.

कोसलांश्च कुरूंश्चैव तथान्यान् विषयानपि। विजित्य वासयामास तत्र तत्र स्वराक्षसान्॥११॥

After conquering Kosala, Kuru, and many other territories, he settled his own Rākṣasas in each place.

अनतानु नामयामास नतानवचिकाय सः। अन्यायसमुच्छखानैव नानादेशमहीपतीन्॥१२॥

He bent those who would not bow, did not strike down those already submissive, and uprooted the unjust kings of many lands.

तस्मै गजांस्तुरङ्गांश्च वडवा गोवृषांस्तथा। दासेरकान् वामिकांश्च स्वर्णभारान् मणींस्तथा॥१३॥

They brought him elephants, horses, mares, cows, bulls, camels and other pack animals, loads of gold, and gems.

दासान् दासीश्च युवतीः सुन्दरीर्वरकन्यकाः। समादायाग्रतो निन्युर्भूपाला जीवितैषिणः॥१४॥

The kings, wishing to preserve their lives, led before him male and female servants, young women, beauties, and noble maidens.

यो यश्च विजितो देशस्तत्र तत्र स्वसेवकः। राक्षसः स्थापितस्तेन प्रजानां कदनप्रियः॥१५॥

In every conquered land he installed one of his own Rākṣasa servants, each delighting in the oppression of the people. Kārtavīrya Plays in the Narmadā

Passage 16

कदाचिन्नर्मदातीरे पुरीं माहिष्मतीमनु। शिविरं कारयामास जगज्जयमहोर्जितः॥१६॥

Once, near the city of Māhiṣmatī on the Narmadā's bank, the mighty world-conqueror ordered his camp to be established.

स तत्र देवमाराद्धुं भवान्यादयितं भवम्। अतिष्ठन्नर्मदातीरे स्वस्थः सुविहितासनः॥१७॥

He remained comfortably seated beside the Narmadā in order to worship Bhava, the beloved of Bhavānī.

Passage 18

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु हैहयाधीश्वरो नृपः। अष्टादशद्वीपपतिः कृतवीर्यसुतोऽर्जुनः॥१८॥

At that very time King Arjuna, son of Kṛtavīrya, lord of the Haihayas and ruler of eighteen islands, was nearby.

Passage 19

सहस्रबाहुर्दीप्तात्मा सम्राट् समरनिर्जयी। चिक्रीड नर्मदातोये कुरङ्गाक्षीगणैर्वृतः॥१९॥

The radiant thousand-armed emperor, undefeated in battle, sported in the Narmadā's water surrounded by doe-eyed women.

Passage 20

कादम्बरीमदोन्मत्तः स्वच्छन्दविहितोत्सवः। अभ्यज्यमानोऽभ्युक्ष्यश्च मण्डलेषु मृगीदृशाम्॥२०॥

Intoxicated by wine, he celebrated freely while circles of doe-eyed women anointed and sprinkled him.

आनन्दतुन्दिलः श्रीमान् मुक्ताहारविभूषितः। विजहार करीवोच्चैः करिणीयूथगो यथा॥२१॥

Swelling with joy and adorned by pearl necklaces, the splendid king sported exuberantly like a bull elephant among a herd of females.

Passage 22

रेवां बाहुसहस्रेण संनिरुध्य समास्थितः। संयुङ्क्ते च वियुङ्क्ते च तस्याः स्रोतः पयोभरम्॥२२॥

Standing firm, he dammed the Revā with his thousand arms, joining and separating them to control the mass of water in her current.

Passage 23

कौतुकी मदिरोन्मत्तः क्रीडति स्म यथासुखम्। संनिरुद्धः प्रवाहोऽस्यास्तस्य बाहुसहस्रशः॥२३॥

Drunk with wine and eager for amusement, he played as he pleased while the river's flow was blocked by his thousand arms.

उद्गच्छति स्म बहुशः प्लावयन् पुलिनावनीम्। प्रतिकूलवहे चैवं प्रवाहे सरितस्तदा॥२४॥

The river repeatedly rose and flooded its sandy banks as its current was forced to flow backward. Rāvaṇa's Camp Is Flooded

Passage 25

प्लावितानि दशास्यस्य शिविराणि समन्ततः। शिवस्य पूजासम्भारः सर्वोऽपि जलसम्प्लुतः॥२५॥

The flood engulfed the ten-headed king's encampment on every side, and all the materials prepared for Śiva's worship were submerged.

Passage 26

अवहत्सहसा तत्र पात्राणां प्रचयस्तथा। भूषणानि च वस्त्राणि शय्यास्तरणकादयः॥२६॥

The water suddenly carried away heaps of vessels, ornaments, garments, beds, coverings, and other possessions.

Passage 27

अवहञ्जलवेगेन शिवलिङ्गानि च क्षणात्। अन्तःपुरपदार्थाश्च पानभोज्यासनादयः॥२७॥

In an instant the rushing water swept away Śiva liṅgas and items from the inner quarters, including drink, food, seats, and more.

इत्थं विपक्षे शिविरे चुकोप दशकन्धरः। किमिदं कुत एवेति केनेति च वितर्कयन्॥२८॥

Seeing his camp thus overturned, the ten-headed king grew angry and wondered, “What is this? Where has it come from, and who caused it?”

Passage 29

अथास्यानुचराश्चाराः शशंसुः कर्म तस्य तत्। सहस्रबाहुवीरस्य क्रीडतो नर्मदाम्भसि॥२९॥

His attendant scouts then reported that this was the work of the thousand-armed hero sporting in the Narmadā.

Passage 30

दोर्दण्डभूरिभी रुद्धं प्रतिकूलवहं पयः। निमज्जयामास विभो शिविराणि च सम्भृतीः॥३०॥

“Lord, the water, blocked by his many staff-like arms and driven backward, has submerged your camps and supplies.” The Challenge

ततश्चातितरां तस्मिंश्चुक्रोधात्रपनायकः। हंहो निवार्यतामाशु हैहयोऽयं मदाविलः॥३१॥

The Rākṣasa leader became exceedingly angry with him and cried, “Ho! Stop this wine-besotted Haihaya at once!”

अथादाय धनुर्बाणान् बली लङ्काभटोऽब्रवीत्। अयि दुश्चेष्ट मुञ्चैनां चेष्टां सोमसुताजले॥३२॥

A mighty warrior of Laṅkā took up bow and arrows and said, “You miscreant, cease this conduct in the waters of the moon's daughter!

Passage 33

मुक्तोऽपराधस्ते रुद्रपूजाविघ्नसमुद्भवः। इदानीमपि दुश्चेष्ट चेष्टां मुञ्च मयोदितः॥३३॥

“The offence produced by your disruption of Rudra's worship is forgiven. Even now, wrongdoer, heed my command and stop this behavior.”

Passage 34

एवमुक्तोऽपि तेनासौ कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो बली। नाज्ञासीन्मदिरामत्तः कोऽसौ वदति मामिति॥३४॥

Though addressed in this way, mighty Kārtavīrya Arjuna was so drunk with wine that he did not even recognize who was speaking to him.

Passage 35

ततः स दश तीक्ष्णाग्रान् सायकान् मर्मभेदिनः। निचखानास्य दोर्मूले राक्षसानां पुरन्दरः॥३५॥

The Rākṣasa champion then drove ten sharp-tipped, vital-piercing arrows into the bases of Arjuna's arms.

Passage 36

नाबुध्यत ततोऽप्येष लग्नान् दंशानिवाङ्गके। स्त्रियस्तु कथयामासुः कस्य बाणा इमे प्रभो॥३६॥

Even then Arjuna no more noticed the arrows lodged in his body than insect bites. But the women said, “Lord, whose arrows are these?”

Passage 37

दृष्ट्वा बाणांस्ततो रुग्णानुदास्यः कृतवीर्यजः। अपश्यत् पुरतो रक्षः क्रुध्यन्तं दशकन्धरम्॥३७॥

The son of Kṛtavīrya looked at the arrows embedded in him, cast them aside, and saw the angry ten-headed Rākṣasa before him.

Passage 38

तं सम्बोध्य ततोऽवादीद्दशास्य क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। किं नु गर्वायसे मूढ कृत्वाप्यागः सुदुःसहम्॥३८॥

The ten-headed king, overcome with anger, addressed him: “Why are you so arrogant, fool, after committing this intolerable offence?

Passage 39

रुणत्सि किं वृथाक्रीड रेवास्रोतो भुजद्रुमैः। प्रतिकूलवहैस्तोयैः प्लावितं शिविरं मम॥३९॥

“Why, in pointless play, do you obstruct the Revā's current with your tree-like arms? Its backward-flowing waters have flooded my camp.

Passage 40

बहुबाहुतया दृप्तः किमेवं क्रीडसे मुधा। अपनेष्यामि ते दर्पं तीक्ष्णाग्रैः सायकैरहम्॥४०॥

“Proud of possessing many arms, why do you sport so foolishly? I shall remove your arrogance with my sharp-tipped arrows.”

Passage 41

इति क्षुद्रवाचालरक्षःप्रयुक्तं वचो मानहीनं निशम्यात्मता सः। महायोगिवर्यो मदार्घूर्णिताक्षः कथञ्चिन्मनोविक्रियां नाजगाम॥४१॥

Hearing these dishonorable words hurled by the petty, talkative Rākṣasa, that great master of yoga, though his eyes rolled with intoxication, somehow remained inwardly unmoved. Part Two — Rāvaṇa Is Captured

Passage 42

ब्रह्मोवाच— ततः स शरवर्षेण छादयामास रावणः। कार्तवीर्यार्जुनं वीरं क्रीडन्तं नर्मदाजले॥१॥

Brahmā said: Rāvaṇa then covered heroic Kārtavīrya Arjuna, still sporting in the Narmadā, with a shower of arrows.

Passage 43

ते शरास्तस्य वीरस्य क्रीडतः स्वेच्छयाम्भसि। अनवाप्य वपुःस्पर्शं निपेतुर्विश्वतो दिशम्॥२॥

Without touching the body of the hero playing freely in the water, those arrows fell away in every direction.

Passage 44

हीनः सोऽमर्षणोऽत्यर्थं बाणवृष्टेः पराभवात्। शूलान् परश्वधान् प्रासान् भुशुण्डीस्तोमरानसीन्॥३॥

Humiliated and enraged by the failure of his arrow-rain, Rāvaṇa hurled tridents, axes, spears, bhuśuṇḍīs, lances, and swords.

चक्रकुन्तगदादीनि ज्वलन्त्युज्ज्वलतेजसा। उच्चावचान्यायुधानि विक्षेप परया रुषा॥४॥

In supreme fury he cast discs, pikes, maces, and many other weapons blazing with brilliant radiance.

Passage 46

हुङ्कारेणैव तान्येष वारयामास सर्वतः। राजराजेश्वरो वीरः कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो बली॥५॥

Mighty Kārtavīrya Arjuna, heroic lord of kings, repelled them all merely with a forceful shout.

Passage 47

ततः सोऽतितरां क्रुद्धो दृष्ट्वा वितथमुद्यमम्। रूपं प्रदर्शयामास सर्वलोकभयानकम्॥६॥

Seeing his effort rendered futile, Rāvaṇa grew still angrier and revealed a form terrifying to every world.

Passage 48

ज्वलद्दीपशिखाकारनेत्रविंशकभीषणम्। दंष्ट्राकरालवदनं तिर्यग्भ्रुकुटिभासुरम्॥७॥

Its twenty eyes were dreadful like blazing lamp-flames; its mouth was fearsome with fangs and its slanting brows shone fiercely.

Passage 49

विस्फूर्जदायुधज्वालादुष्प्रेक्षभुजविंशकम्। कल्पान्तपावकोद्दीपज्वालामालातिदुःसहम्॥८॥

Its twenty arms, flashing with weapon-fire, were unbearable to behold, like a garland of flames from the fire at the end of an age.

Passage 50

विद्युज्जालजटाघोरं महोल्कावृन्दवर्षणम्। महोद्धतं महाटोपं गर्जमानं मुहुर्मुहुः॥९॥

Terrible with matted locks like a net of lightning, raining great meteors, immensely violent and ostentatious, it roared again and again.

Passage 51

पादकम्पितपातालं किरीटलिखिताम्बरम्। सर्वतो रोदसी व्याप्य संस्थितं भूरिभीषणम्॥१०॥

Its feet shook the underworld and its crown seemed to scratch the sky; filling heaven and earth on every side, it stood exceedingly dreadful.

Passage 52

तस्य तं घोरमाकारं रक्षोमायाविसर्जनम्। त्रासनं सर्वजन्तूनां क्रोधसंरम्भदुःसहम्॥११॥

That dreadful form, projected through Rākṣasa illusion and unbearable in its fury, terrified every creature.

Passage 53

निरीक्ष्य वनिताः सर्वा राजराजेश्वरस्य ताः। जलक्रीडां परित्यज्य दुद्रुवुः सर्वतोदिशम्॥१२॥

Seeing it, all the lord of kings' women abandoned their water play and fled in every direction.

Passage 54

ससर्ज राक्षसः क्रुद्धः स्वां स मायामतिभीषणाम्। ततो निपेतुर्गगनान्महोल्काः प्रज्वलाः॥१३॥

The enraged Rākṣasa released his exceedingly dreadful illusion, and great blazing meteors fell from the sky.

Passage 55

शिलाश्चाविरलाः स्फूर्जद्वह्निज्वालाभयानकाः। महाज्वालामया वृक्षाः प्रकाशितदिगम्बराः॥१४॥

Stones fell without pause, fearsome with bursting flames, and trees made of great fire illuminated the quarters and sky.

Passage 56

क्षणाच्च तिमिरं घोरं क्षणाच्च विपुलं महः। क्षणादङ्गारवृष्टिश्च क्षणादुल्कौघवर्षणम्॥१५॥

One moment brought terrible darkness, the next vast light; then came a rain of embers, then a downpour of meteors.

Passage 57

क्षणात्कटकटाशब्दो वज्रसम्पातसूचकः। क्षणात्पाषाणवृष्टिश्च क्षणाद्वाडवमहानलः॥१६॥

Suddenly a crackling sound announced thunderbolt-strikes; then came a rain of stones, then the great submarine fire.

क्षणाच्च विपुलोऽम्भोधिः प्लावयन् सर्वतो महीम्। क्षणाच्चण्डानिलो घोरः समुत्पाटितभूधरः॥१७॥

In an instant a vast ocean flooded the earth on every side; then a fierce wind arose, uprooting mountains.

Passage 59

एवं स राक्षसीं मायां दर्शयन् विश्वभीतिदाम्। भीषयामास सकलान् जनान् माहिष्मतीस्थितान्॥१८॥

Displaying this world-terrifying Rākṣasa illusion, he frightened all the inhabitants of Māhiṣmatī.

Passage 60

अन्तःपुरस्य वनितास्त्रस्ता राक्षसमायया। चक्षुषी मीलयामासुर्विलपन्त्यो भयातुराः॥१९॥

Terrified by the illusion, the women of the inner palace closed their eyes and wailed in fear.

Passage 61

तं जनाः शरणं जग्मुर्वित्रस्ताः पुरवास्तवः। महायोगेश्वरं वीरं कार्तवीर्यार्जुनं नृपम्॥२०॥

The frightened townspeople sought refuge in King Kārtavīrya Arjuna, the heroic master of great yoga.

Passage 62

ऊचुर्भयातुराः सर्वे राक्षस्या मायया भृशम्। पीड्यमानाः स्खलच्चित्तविवशा विह्वलाश्च ते॥२१॥

Tormented by the Rākṣasa illusion, helpless, shaken in mind, and overwhelmed by fear, they all appealed to him.

Passage 63

पाहि राजेश्वरामुष्माद्राक्षसाद्घोरदर्शनात्। सृजतो राक्षसीं मायां दृष्टपूर्वां न कर्हिचित्॥२२॥

“Protect us, lord of kings, from this dreadful-looking Rākṣasa, who creates an illusion never seen before!

Passage 64

पाहि पाहि महायोगिन् हैहयान्वयदीपक। अष्टादशद्वीपजगत्येकराजमहाद्युते॥२३॥

“Protect us, great yogin, lamp of the Haihaya line, radiant sole king of the world of eighteen islands!

त्रैलोक्यमहनीयस्य सर्वमायामहेशितुः। सर्वयोगीन्द्रवर्यस्य का ते मायास्तु मोहिनी॥२४॥

“You are honored through the three worlds, master of every illusion and foremost of yogic lords. What magic could delude you?

Passage 66

यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण पलायन्ते सुदूरतः। आधयो व्याधयः सर्वे स भवान् पातु नः प्रभो॥२५॥

“At the mere remembrance of you, every affliction and disease flees far away. May that lord protect us!

Passage 67

सहस्रबाहो विश्वेश कार्तवीर्यार्जुन प्रभो। हैहयेन्द्र महायोगिन् रक्ष रक्ष निजान् जनान्॥२६॥

“Thousand-armed lord of the world, Kārtavīrya Arjuna, Haihaya sovereign and great yogin—protect your own people!

Passage 68

राजराज महाराज राजराजेश्वरेश्वर। सर्वभूम्येकराज त्वं पाहि नः शरणागतान्॥२७॥

“King of kings, great king, lord above sovereigns, sole ruler of the whole earth—protect us who seek refuge!

Passage 69

चापैः पञ्चशतैर्वीर बाणैः पञ्चशतैरपि। पाहि नो राजराजेन्द्र भजतस्त्वां निरन्तरम्॥२८॥

“Hero with five hundred bows and five hundred arrows, supreme king, protect us who serve you continually!

Passage 70

वीरेन्द्र विश्ववन्द्याङ्घ्रे विश्वभूतिविधायक। विश्वभीतिवितानघ्न त्रायस्वास्मान् भयातुरान्॥२९॥

“Lord of heroes, whose feet the world reveres, maker of universal prosperity and destroyer of spreading fear, rescue us who are terrified!

Passage 71

सुरक्ताम्बरोष्णीषपुष्पस्रगाढ्यं महारक्तकाश्मीरलिप्ताखिलाङ्गम्। लसद्रक्तमाणिक्यसिंहासनस्थं महाराज नित्यं भवन्तं नताः स्मः॥३०॥

“Great king, we always bow to you, splendid in deep-red garments, turban, and flower garlands, your whole body anointed with crimson saffron, seated upon a throne of shining red rubies.

Passage 72

स्फुरद्वारुणीभूमदाघूर्णिताक्षं जगज्जीवकारुण्यसन्दोहपूर्णम्। नमस्याकृताशेषमायानिवृत्तिं भवन्तं नताः स्मो नताः स्मो नताः स्मः॥३१॥

“Your eyes roll beneath wine's powerful intoxication, yet you are filled with compassion for every living being; your mere salutation dispels all illusion. We bow to you again and again!

Passage 73

महाराज राजेन्द्र माहिष्मतीश प्रभो कार्तवीर्यार्जुनातीतमृत्यो। महावीरवर्येन्द्र योगीन्द्रमौले भव प्राणिनां भीतिसंहारकस्त्वम्॥३२॥

“Great king, lord of Māhiṣmatī, Kārtavīrya Arjuna beyond death, crown of great heroes and yogic lords—destroy the fear of living beings!

Passage 74

न मारीभयं नापि चौरादिभीतिर्न वा रोगकृत्याग्रहारिष्टकष्टम्। न दुर्दैवपीडा न च प्रेतबाधा तवामुष्य नामग्रहान्मानुषाणाम्॥३३॥

“Those who invoke your name fear neither plague nor thieves, disease, sorcery, seizure, calamity, misfortune, nor torment by spirits.

Passage 75

महाष्टादशद्वीपसाम्राज्यलक्ष्मीपते हैहयान्वयपाथोधिचन्द्र। प्रभो सर्वलोकेशवन्द्यापलङ्घ्ये न हि त्वां प्रपन्ना भयं प्राप्नुवन्ति॥३४॥

“Lord of the imperial fortune of eighteen great islands, moon of the Haihaya ocean, inviolable one revered by every world's rulers—those who seek you never meet fear.

Passage 76

अभयं सर्वभूतानां मङ्गलं सर्वदेहिनाम्। प्रशमं सर्वदुष्टानां विभो माहिष्मतीपते॥३५॥

“O lord of Māhiṣmatī, grant fearlessness to all beings, welfare to every embodied creature, and the pacification of every wicked power.

Passage 77

ध्यायन् पञ्चशतांश्चापान् स्मरन् पञ्चशतानिषून्। अभयं सर्वथा लोकः प्राप्नोति कृपया तव॥३६॥

“By contemplating your five hundred bows and remembering your five hundred arrows, people attain complete fearlessness through your mercy.

स्मृतमात्रः प्रभो नित्यं त्रायसे सकलं जगत्। स कथं प्रकटः साक्षाद्रक्षिष्यति न वै निजान्॥३७॥

“Lord, merely remembered, you always save the entire world. How then, present before us, could you fail to protect your own?

Passage 79

इति संस्तुवतां तेषां निशम्य कृपणा गिरः। प्राबुध्यत महाराजस्तत्क्षणं मदिरामदात्॥३८॥

Hearing these pitiful words of praise, the great king awakened at once from his wine-induced stupor.

Passage 80

विलोक्य राक्षसं घोरं पुरतो दशकन्धरम्। सृजन्तं राक्षसीं मायां प्राणिनामतिभीषणाम्॥३९॥

He beheld the dreadful ten-headed Rākṣasa before him, projecting an illusion terrifying to living beings.

Passage 81

समभिद्रुत्य बलवान् कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो नृपः। जग्राह सहसा दोर्भिर्दुष्टं व्यालमिवाहिकः॥४०॥

Mighty King Kārtavīrya Arjuna rushed forward and seized the villain in his arms as a snake-catcher grasps a serpent.

Passage 82

स धृतस्तेन बलिना महामायाविना खलः। संक्षिप्तसर्वमायोऽभूदभिभूत इव त्विषा॥४१॥

Seized by that powerful king, the villain and master illusionist lost every illusion, as though overwhelmed by Arjuna's radiance.

Passage 83

सर्वान्धकतमैस्तस्य तेजोभिः कोणपेश्वरः। प्रधर्ष्यमाणहृदयस्तत्रास बहुशो धृतः॥४२॥

Held fast, the Rākṣasa lord repeatedly trembled, his heart crushed by Arjuna's brilliance, which dispelled every darkness.

Passage 84

त्वरमाणः स तं मुक्त्यै बलेन बलिना धृतः। अत्यर्थं वितथोद्योगो नाशक्नोत्पलायितुम्॥४३॥

Though he struggled urgently to free himself, the mighty king's strength held him; his efforts failed completely and he could not escape.

Passage 85

ततो बद्ध्वा दृढैः पाशैर्वाचालं राक्षसं खलम्। क्षुद्रं निरस्तमायं तमानयत् स्वगृहं नृपः॥४४॥

The king bound the petty, boastful, illusionless Rākṣasa with strong bonds and brought him to his palace.

Passage 86

स शपन् बहुधा क्रोधाद्गालीभिः क्षुद्रमानसः। वीरेन्द्रबलाद्बद्धो नाचलत्पाशजालतः॥४५॥

The small-minded captive angrily cursed and abused them in many ways, but bound by the hero's strength he could not move within the net of bonds.

Passage 87

तं पञ्जरान्तः प्रक्षिप्य क्रीडाशकुनिकं यथा। अन्तःपुरपुरद्वारि कौतुकार्थमवासयत्॥४६॥

Arjuna placed him in a cage like a pet bird and kept him at the entrance to the inner palace as a curiosity.

Passage 88

वीरस्य हैहयेन्द्रस्य तस्यान्तःपुरयोषितः। निर्भयास्तं तुदन्ति स्म वाक्शरैरतिकोपनम्॥४७॥

The women of the heroic Haihaya king's inner palace, now unafraid, tormented the furious prisoner with arrow-like words.

Passage 89

अरे त्वं मूढहृदय कथमस्मानुदरिषन्। इमामवस्थां यातोऽसि धिक्ते तावत्पराक्रमम्॥४८॥

“Fool, how could you try to frighten us? You have come to this condition—shame on your vaunted prowess!

Passage 90

क्व ते बलं च शौर्यं च क्व ते मानो दशानन। सहस्रबाहोः पुरतो यो दृप्तो विंशबाहुभिः॥४९॥

“Ten-headed one, where are your strength, courage, and pride? With only twenty arms you boasted before the thousand-armed king!

Passage 91

साधु नः कौतुकार्थं त्वं विनिबद्धोऽसि पञ्जरे। दशाननो विंशबाहुर्नेत्राणां विंशतिं वहन्॥५०॥

“How fitting that you, with ten heads, twenty arms, and twenty eyes, are bound in a cage for our amusement!”

Passage 92

काश्चिन्महोद्धता योषास्तस्य चक्षूंषि सर्वतः। इषीकाभिस्तुदन्ति स्म पञ्जरस्थस्य निगृतेः॥५१॥

Some audacious women poked the eyes of the caged and subdued prisoner with reeds from every side.

Passage 93

काश्चित्तस्याशनार्थाय कृपोद्रेकेण कातराः। मुञ्चन्ति बालकोच्छिष्टान् पर्पटान् शष्कुलीस्तथा॥५२॥

Others, feigning pity and concern for his food, tossed him children's leftovers, wafers, and fried cakes.

Passage 94

काश्चित्तं यावकरसैः पादरञ्जनशेषकैः। रञ्जयन्ति स्म वनितास्तूष्णीं भूय परिस्थितम्॥५३॥

Some women silently colored him with leftover red lac dye used upon their feet.

Passage 95

काश्चित्तमञ्जनैः स्निग्धैर्नेत्ररञ्जनशेषितैः। इषीकामुखसंलग्नैर्मशकं कुर्वते स्त्रियः॥५४॥

Others used reeds tipped with leftover glossy eye-cosmetic to draw a moustache upon him.

Passage 96

काश्चिदुद्धतनिस्तीर्णैश्चूर्णपिण्डैः सुगन्धिभिः। ताडयन्ति स्म रोषेण पूर्वं स्वाम्यपराधिनम्॥५५॥

Some angrily struck the man who had offended their lord with lumps of discarded fragrant powder.

Passage 97

काश्चित्सुगन्धिभिस्तैलैर्मर्दनादवशेषितैः। स्नापयन्त्यस्तमवशं बहुशो हृदि रोषणम्॥५६॥

Others repeatedly drenched the helpless, inwardly furious captive with fragrant oils left over from massage.

Passage 98

एवं स्वस्वमनोरथोचितममुं दीनं निबद्धं तथा क्रीडापञ्जरमध्यगं सुविवशं लुप्ताभिमानं खलम्। शश्वत्केलिरतस्य हैहयपतेरन्तःपुरस्थाः स्त्रियस्तैस्तैः कर्मभिरत्यरुंतुदतमैर्भूयस्तुदन्ति स्म तम्॥५७॥

Thus the women of the ever-playful Haihaya king's inner palace tormented the wretched villain again and again in whatever painfully inventive ways suited their fancy.
