Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— पुलस्त्यस्य मुनेर्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य गुणवत्तरम्। तथेति प्रतिजग्राह कुबेरो वीतसंगरः॥१॥
Brahmā said: Hearing the excellent counsel of the sage Pulastya, Kubera abandoned the conflict and accepted it, saying, “So be it.”
Passage 2
इत्थं निवर्त्य विपुलं कलहं यक्षरक्षसोः। पुलस्त्यो भगवान् यातस्तद्विसृष्टः स्वमाश्रमम्॥२॥
Having thus ended the great quarrel between the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, the blessed Pulastya took leave of Kubera and returned to his hermitage.
Passage 3
गते ब्रह्मर्षिप्रवरे कुबेरः कृतसम्मतिः। यक्षाणां राजधानीं तामलकां नगरीं ययौ॥३॥
After that foremost Brahmarṣi departed, Kubera honored the agreement and went to Alakā, the capital city of the Yakṣas.
Passage 4
सानुगः सपरिवारः सदारः ससुहृद्दलः। अलकां प्रययौ धीमान् कुबेरस्त्यक्तसंगरः॥४॥
Wise Kubera, relinquishing battle, journeyed to Alakā with his followers, household, wives, and company of friends.
Passage 5
तमगृह्णन्त गन्धर्वाः स्वाभिषेकपुरःसरम्। दत्त्वालकापुरीराज्यं बभूवुर्वंशवर्तिनः॥५॥
The Gandharvas received him with a coronation, bestowed the sovereignty of Alakā upon him, and became obedient to his dynasty.
Passage 6
पुष्पकं नाम तं दिव्यं विमानाग्र्यमनुत्तमम्। उपसेदे राजराजं यदृच्छागतिसाधनम्॥६॥
The unsurpassed celestial aerial car named Puṣpaka, capable of travelling wherever one wished, entered the service of the King of Kings.
Passage 7
शङ्खपद्मादयः सर्वे निधयो दिव्यमूर्तयः। उपतस्थुस्तमाज्ञप्ता भूतनाथेन शम्भुना॥७॥
At Śambhu's command, all the treasures—Śaṅkha, Padma, and the others—assumed divine forms and attended Kubera.
Passage 8
स्वयं स भगवान् शम्भुस्तस्मै विहितभक्तये। कृपयामास चण्डीशश्चण्डिका च निरन्तरम्॥८॥
Blessed Śambhu, lord of Caṇḍī, and Caṇḍikā herself continually showed mercy to him because of his established devotion.
Passage 9
कैलासस्थानमाश्रित्य रुद्रावासं सुदुर्गमम्। अत्यर्थं मुमुदे श्रीदः सख्यं चापि कपालिना॥९॥
Dwelling at inaccessible Kailāsa, the abode of Rudra, the lord of wealth rejoiced exceedingly and enjoyed friendship with Kapālin.
Passage 10
स्थानभ्रंशमवाप्यापि नाखिद्यत धनेश्वरः। ततोऽप्यनुत्तमं प्राप्तः स्थानं तदलकाह्वयम्॥१०॥
Though displaced from his former home, the lord of wealth did not grieve, for he had gained the still more excellent dwelling called Alakā. Rāvaṇa Occupies Laṅkā

रावणस्तदुपश्रुत्य निर्याणं किन्नरेशितुः। तदेव बलमादाय लङ्कामाजग्मिवान् बली॥११॥
When mighty Rāvaṇa heard that the lord of the Kinnaras had departed, he took that same army and came to Laṅkā.
Passage 12
सह रक्षोगणैः सर्वैरनुजाभ्यां च संयुतः। भगिन्या शूर्पणखया परिवारैस्तथाखिलैः॥१२॥
He came with every band of Rākṣasas, accompanied by his two younger brothers, his sister Śūrpaṇakhā, and all their households.
Passage 13
आजगाम बली घोरो राक्षसेन्द्रो दशाननः। पुरस्कृतः स रक्षोभिस्तत्र राज्याभिषिक्तये॥१३॥
The mighty and terrible ten-headed lord of the Rākṣasas arrived, escorted by his people so that he might be consecrated king there.
Passage 14
आजगाम भगवान् तत्र पुलस्त्यः सर्वयोगिराट्। प्रजाहितैषिणस्तस्य कर्तुं राज्याभिषेचनम्॥१४॥
Blessed Pulastya, sovereign among yogins, also came there to perform the coronation of his descendant, who desired the welfare of his subjects. The Coronation
Passage 15
स उवाह वरां भार्यां नाम्ना मन्दोदरीं शुभाम्। पातिव्रत्यपरां दिव्यां नित्यं कन्यापदे स्थिताम्॥१५॥
Rāvaṇa married the excellent and auspicious Mandodarī, a divine woman devoted to fidelity who forever retained the state of a maiden.
Passage 16
स तया सहितो वीरः सर्वराक्षसपुङ्गवः। पुलस्त्येनाभिषिषिचे लङ्काराज्ये महोर्जितः॥१६॥
Together with her, that mighty hero and foremost of all Rākṣasas was consecrated by Pulastya to Laṅkā's kingship.
Passage 17
महासुवर्णप्रासादे मणिमाणिक्यभासुरे। राज्यासनमनुप्राप्य शुशुभे राक्षसेश्वरः॥१७॥
The lord of the Rākṣasas shone upon the royal throne in a great golden palace radiant with gems and rubies.
Passage 18
सच्छत्रभूद्रत्नकिरीटशोभितः शुभाङ्गदोद्द्योतितबाहुविंशतिः। सुरत्नमाली वरहेमवेष्टनो विभूषणाढ्यः शुशुभे दशाननः॥१८॥
Beneath the royal parasol, the ten-headed king shone with a jewelled crown, twenty arms brightened by splendid armlets, necklaces of fine gems, excellent golden bands, and abundant ornaments.
Passage 19
संवीज्यमानः शशिशुभ्रचामरैः सुवर्णसिंहासनमध्यमास्थितः। मन्दोदरीशोभितवामपार्श्वकः पुलस्त्यनेत्रोत्सवकृद्बभूव सः॥१९॥
Seated upon the golden lion throne and fanned with moon-white fly-whisks, his left side adorned by Mandodarī, he became a festival for Pulastya's eyes.
Passage 20
स भालपट्टेषु सुमौक्तिकाक्षतैर्विराजमानस्तिलकैश्च कौङ्कुमैः। सलाजदूर्वाक्षतदूर्विकादलैः सम्पूजितो राक्षसकन्यकागणैः॥२०॥
Companies of Rākṣasa maidens worshipped him with fine pearls, rice grains, and saffron marks upon his brows, and with parched grain, sacred grass, unbroken rice, and auspicious leaves.
Passage 21
राज्याभिषेके स्नपितो द्विजोत्तमैः पुलस्त्यमुख्यैर्वरमन्त्रपाठकैः। समस्ततीर्थाम्बुपवित्रविग्रहः स शुभ्रदिव्याम्बरधृग्व्यशोभत॥२१॥
At his royal consecration, eminent twice-born priests led by Pulastya bathed him while reciting excellent mantras. Purified by the waters of every sacred ford and clothed in brilliant divine garments, he shone magnificently.
Passage 22
स मन्त्रपुष्पाञ्जलिभिर्द्विजोत्तमैराशास्यमानः श्रितकाञ्चनासनः। प्रमोदपुष्टावयवः प्रसादभृत्त्रैलोक्यराज्योचितवेषभृद्बभौ॥२२॥
Seated on a golden throne, he received the blessings and mantra-charged flower offerings of the foremost Brahmins. His limbs filled out with joy, he bore a gracious appearance fit for sovereignty over the three worlds.
Passage 23
अनन्यवीर्योऽप्रतिमः पराक्रमैरशेषविद्यापरपारदर्शनः। भूतेशभक्तिप्रचुरात्मवैभवो बभौ भृशं सद्गुणगौरवाञ्चितः॥२३॥
Unrivalled in might, incomparable in valor, and versed in the furthest reaches of every science, he shone with the majesty born of deep devotion to Śiva and the dignity of many virtues.
Passage 24
उच्छूनदोर्दण्डधरो धनुर्धरः समस्तदिव्यायुधलब्धशिक्षणः। विशालवक्षःस्थलरत्नहारभृल्लङ्काधिराजः शुशुभेतमां त्विषा॥२४॥
Bearing a bow upon his massive arms and trained in every celestial weapon, Laṅkā's king shone with surpassing splendor, a jewelled necklace across his broad chest.
Passage 25
किरीटभृत् कुण्डलवृन्ददीप्तिभृद्विशालविशारुणलोचनप्रभः। सुवर्णकाञ्च्यङ्गदरत्नशोभितः सुप्रांशुमूर्तिः कटकोघदीपितः॥२५॥
He wore a crown and blazed with clustered earrings; his large eyes shone with a reddish hue. Tall and imposing, he was adorned with a golden girdle, jewelled armlets, and a host of bracelets.
Passage 26
प्रतापभृत्प्राप्तवराभिषेचन उद्विक्तचित्तोऽधिकवीर्यबृंहितः। सुदृप्त आत्माप्रतिमत्वचिन्तनात् त्रैलोक्यमाचिक्रमिषुर्बलाधिकः॥२६॥
Endowed with majesty and an excellent consecration, his pride swelled with his growing power. Exulting in the thought that none equalled him, the exceedingly strong king desired to conquer the three worlds.
Passage 27
पुलस्त्यवाक्येन भृशं प्रमोदितः समुद्रवीचीपरिखासुदुर्गमाम्। सुवेलशैलोन्नतिभूरिभीषणप्राकारगुप्तां नगरीं शशास सः॥२७॥
Greatly delighted by Pulastya's words, he ruled the city—difficult to approach because ocean waves formed its moat and guarded by the immense, fearsome ramparts rising upon Mount Suvela.
Passage 28
तस्याज्ञया ते त्रिजगज्जयैषिणो विवृद्धवीर्याः समरेषु दुर्मदाः। लङ्कापुरीवास्तुजुषो निशाचरा अतीव चित्ते मुमुदुस्तदाखिलाः॥२८॥
Under his command, all the night-roaming inhabitants of Laṅkā rejoiced deeply. Their strength had grown, they were uncontrollable in battle, and they longed to conquer the three worlds. Rāvaṇa's Kindred
Passage 29
तमन्ववर्तत्किल कुम्भकर्णो ज्येष्ठं प्रियं भ्रातरमुग्रदीप्तिः। आज्ञावशाद्गोद्विजदेववेदधर्मेषु गत्यर्थमभयप्रदो नृणाम्॥२९॥
Fiercely radiant Kumbhakarṇa followed his beloved elder brother. Obedient to his command, he gave people security in matters concerning cows, Brahmins, gods, the Veda, and sacred duty.
Passage 30
यो मासषट्कं वरमात्मनिद्रामयाचताराधितदेवतायाः। जागर्ति षण्मासमशेषलोकभयाय वीरः किल घोरकर्मा॥३०॥
Having worshipped the goddess, that formidable hero had asked the boon of sleeping for six months; for the six months he remained awake, his terrible deeds brought fear to every world.
Passage 31
विभीषणश्चानुज एव तस्य परं स्वभावाद्धरिपादरक्षः। भजंस्तदीयाङ्घ्रिभृतं मनस्वी सदुत्तमश्लोककथाप्रसक्तः॥३१॥
His younger brother Vibhīṣaṇa, by nature a supreme guardian of Hari's feet, was thoughtful and devoted to service at those feet, always absorbed in accounts of the Lord of excellent fame.
Passage 32
विष्ण्वङ्घ्रिदिव्यतुलसीसनाथशिराः स हि ज्येष्ठकुकर्मदूनः। तथापि कालं कलितप्रतीक्षो निनाय तत्सङ्गनिरस्तखेदः॥३२॥
His head was graced by divine tulasī from Viṣṇu's feet, and he was pained by his elder brother's evil deeds. Nevertheless, waiting for the proper time, he passed his days in that company while overcoming his sorrow.
Passage 33
तेषामनूजा प्रबभूव शूर्पणखाह्वयान्यन्तसुघोररूपा। अनुव्रता भ्रातरमुग्रकर्मा त्रैलोक्यभीतेर्जननी स्वभावात्॥३३॥
Their younger sister was the exceedingly frightful Śūrpaṇakhā. Fierce in action and naturally a source of terror to the three worlds, she faithfully followed her brothers.
Passage 34
ये राक्षसा विश्ववसस्तनूजाः खरस्तथैव त्रिशिराश्च दूषणः। तथैव विद्युद्रशनः सुघोरस्तमन्ववर्तन्त तमोगुणास्ते॥३४॥
The Rākṣasas born from Viśvavas—Khara, Triśiras, Dūṣaṇa, and the exceedingly terrible Vidyudraśana—were dark-natured and followed him as well.
Passage 35
इत्थं विवृद्धमहिमा विपुलप्रतापो रक्षोधिपो दशमुखोऽसुरराजधानीम्। लङ्कामवाप्य भुवनाधिपतिबुभूषुस्तेपे तपः परमदुष्करमेव भूयः॥३५॥
Thus the ten-headed lord of the Rākṣasas, his glory enlarged and his majesty vast, gained Laṅkā, capital of the Asuras.
