Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— मन्दाकिन्यास्तटद्वन्द्वे निकुञ्जवरवेश्मसु। उपत्यकासु विस्तीर्णनवशाद्वलभूमिषु॥१॥
Brahmā said: On both banks of the Mandākinī, in excellent bower dwellings and valleys spread with fresh green turf, the līlā unfolded.
Passage 2
अधित्यकासु रम्यासु स्फाटिकी च शिलामनु। समुतुङ्गेषु शृङ्गेषु मणिकाञ्चनकान्तिषु॥२॥
It took place upon lovely highlands and crystalline rocks, and on lofty peaks radiant like jewels and gold.
Passage 3
अनेकधातुचित्रेषु वरभूरुहमालिषु। अह्नि सन्ध्यायमानेषु सुप्रकाशेषु रात्रिषु॥३॥
Those places were colored by many minerals and lined with excellent trees; day seemed like evening there, while night shone brilliantly.
Passage 4
कन्दरासु मनोज्ञासु ज्वलदौषधिदीप्तिषु। लसद्रत्नशिलारम्यशय्यास्तरणभूरिषु॥४॥
The enchanting caves glowed with luminous herbs and held many beautiful beds and coverings upon gleaming jeweled slabs.
Passage 5
अशेषकेलिसामग्रीसनाथासु समन्ततः। आवातत्रिविधारामवातोर्मिभिः सुगन्धिषु॥५॥
Everywhere they were furnished with all the means of play and made fragrant by waves of breeze arriving from gardens of every kind.
Passage 6
मणिदीपकभास्वत्सु मण्डपेषु च सर्वतः। गह्वरेषु लतावृक्षकुञ्जपुञ्जसुचारुषु॥६॥
Jeweled lamps shone in pavilions on every side, and the mountain recesses were lovely with clusters of vine-and-tree bowers.

पतन्निर्झरसंशीतसावकाशाद्रिभित्तिषु। प्राङ्गणेषु विशालेषु रत्नशालेषु भूरिषु॥७॥
Falling cascades cooled the open faces of the mountain; broad courtyards and abundant jeweled halls lay all around. Rāma and the Women of Vraja
Passage 8
रेमे श्रीरामरसिकः सहजाजानकीयुतः। यूथैर्व्रजवरस्त्रीणां मदनोन्मत्तचेतसाम्॥८॥
Śrī Rāma, the connoisseur of rasa, sported with Sahajā and Jānakī amid companies of Vraja's finest women, whose minds were intoxicated by love.
Passage 9
स्फुरद्विचित्रभूषाणां विचित्रवरवाससाम्। विचित्रहावभावानां विचित्रवरवर्मणाम्॥९॥
Their many-colored ornaments flashed; their splendid garments, gestures, emotions, and beautiful forms were wonderfully varied.
Passage 10
झरणज्झणितमञ्जीरनूपुराणां समन्ततः। वाद्यन्माणिक्यवलयकेयूराणां प्रतिक्षणम्॥१०॥
Their anklets and foot ornaments rang on every side, while jeweled bracelets and armlets sounded at every moment.
Passage 11
विस्फुरन्नवनृत्यानां विलासजितविद्युताम्। नवगानमनोहानां नवचातुर्यसद्मनाम्॥११॥
Their fresh dances flashed forth and surpassed lightning in grace; their new songs enchanted the mind, and each woman was an abode of ever-new skill.
Passage 12
सानन्दं सादरं चैव सहेलं सत्रपं तथा। सवैयात्यं सकुतुकं सोन्मादं समनोद्रवम्॥१२॥
They sported with joy and reverence, with playful ease and modesty, with boldness and curiosity, with divine madness and agitation of heart.
Passage 13
सगर्वं सगुणोद्गारं सभावं सगुणस्पृहम्। सजोषं साभिलाषं च सविलासं विजह्रिरे॥१३॥
They sported with pride, with praise of virtues, with deep feeling and longing for excellence, with delight, desire, and graceful play.
Passage 14
एकोऽनेकतया रामः कामीव कलयन् मुहुः। तास्ताश्चेष्टाः सुरुचिराः शृङ्गाररसपोषिकाः॥१४॥
Though one, Rāma repeatedly became many, like a lover assuming whatever charming action would nourish the rasa of love for each companion.
Passage 15
दर्शयन्नात्मनो दैन्यं भूरिकेलिविचक्षणः। कलाकलापकुशलः कोविदः कविताकरः॥१५॥
Expert in abundant play, skilled in every cluster of arts, learned and poetic, he even displayed tender humility before them.
Passage 16
विजह्रे व्रजवामाभिः श्यामसुन्दरविग्रहः। अपारवीर्यः संस्तभ्य स्वात्मना वीर्यमात्मनः॥१६॥
The dark and beautiful Lord sported with the women of Vraja; of limitless power, he restrained his own might by his own being. Every Season Enters His Service
Passage 17
तस्य चैवं विहरतश्चित्रकूटमहागिरौ। अभवत्सुभगः कालः प्रकटाशेषसद्गुणः॥१७॥
As he sported in this way upon great Citrakūṭa, time itself became lovely and displayed all its finest qualities.
Passage 18
मधुमाधवशोभाढ्यो मधुरः केलिपुष्टिकृत्। शरत्सहजसंफुल्लपद्मषण्डमनोहरः॥१८॥
Spring, rich in the beauty of Madhu and Mādhava, became sweet and strengthened the play; autumn charmed them with naturally blossoming masses of lotuses.
Passage 19
हेमन्तः शिशिरश्चैव विस्तीर्णरजनीसुखः। प्रेमाभ्यन्तरवेश्मान्तविलासरुचिवर्धनः॥१९॥
Early and late winter brought the pleasure of long nights and increased the taste for loving play inside private chambers.

ग्रीष्मः शीतलमुच्छायकदलीवनसेवितः। जलयन्त्रोत्थलहरीसंगिव्यजनमारुतैः॥२०॥
Summer served them with cool, high-shaded banana groves, waves raised by water devices, and breezes from moving fans.
Passage 21
निरन्तरं संशमितसम्भोगजपरिश्रमः। सखीकरचलच्चारुचामरान्दोलशीलितः॥२१॥
The heat and weariness born of union were continually soothed by beautiful chowries swaying in the companions' hands.
Passage 22
अजस्रचन्द्रिकोद्गीर्णसुधावृष्टिहृतक्लमः। उशीरमण्डपावासनीतमध्याह्नजातपः॥२२॥
Ceaseless moonlight poured a rain of nectar that removed fatigue, while residence in pavilions of cooling uśīra grass carried away the midday heat.
Passage 23
वापिकान्तरसंक्लृप्तदोलातल्पमनोहरः। वल्लरीजालविवरमन्दागतमरुत्प्रियः॥२३॥
Swing-beds arranged within stepwells gave delight, and gentle breezes entering through openings in networks of vines were especially pleasing.
Passage 24
वर्षाश्च घर्घराघोषिघनसंघट्टमञ्जुलाः। माद्यन्मयूरसंघुष्टकेकाषड्जखराञ्चिताः॥२४॥
The rains were lovely with the rumbling collision of clouds and were accented by the sharp ṣaḍja note of peacock cries resounding in intoxicated flocks.

चातकाधीतमधुरपिकेश्वरकलस्वराः। निरन्तरघनच्छायापनीततपनातपाः॥२५॥
Sweet, artful notes learned by the cātakas and lordly cuckoos filled the air, while unbroken cloud shade removed the burning heat of the sun.
Passage 26
पतन्मनोहारसलिलबिन्दुपुष्पौघवर्षणाः। दशदिक्षु चमत्कारिचपलासौष्ठवाञ्चिताः॥२६॥
Enchanting falling drops of water mingled with showers of flowers, and all ten directions were adorned by the astonishing beauty of lightning.
Passage 27
कदम्बकाननोद्भूतसुमनोगुलिकाञ्चिताः। सुपक्वजम्बूविपिनाः पक्वाम्रकलसौरभाः॥२७॥
Kadamba groves were covered with little balls of blossoms; the jambu forests bore fully ripened fruit, and ripe mangoes spread a delicate fragrance.
Passage 28
तमालकाननोद्भूतकुसुमालिविराजिताः। शिलीन्ध्रपुष्पनिपतन्मत्तरोलम्बनादिताः॥२८॥
Rows of flowers arising in tamāla groves shone beautifully, and intoxicated bees hummed as mushroom blossoms fell.
Passage 29
उत्फुल्लकेतकवनीसौरभ्यहृतषट्पदाः। दर्दुरध्वानविजितविचित्रपिककूजिताः॥२९॥
The fragrance of blooming ketakī groves captivated the bees, while the calls of frogs overcame even the varied song of cuckoos.
Passage 30
दिवानिशसमुद्भूतध्वान्तापिहितवासराः। सरित्समुद्रसरसीकुल्यातुल्याभिमानकाः॥३०॥
Darkness arose day and night and covered the daylight; rivers, oceans, lakes, and channels all seemed swollen with equal pride.
Passage 31
मालिनाम्बुवहच्छन्नसूर्यचन्द्रमरीचयः। अपि क्षुद्रनदीपूरे महाजवविवर्धनाः॥३१॥
Massed rain clouds concealed the rays of sun and moon, and even the flooding of small streams grew into a mighty current.
Passage 32
एवं रामं षडृतवः सेवितुं सुसमुत्सुकाः। स्वं स्वं स्थानं समालम्ब्य वसन्ति स्म गिराविह॥३२॥
Thus the six seasons, intensely eager to serve Rāma, each assumed its own place and dwelt upon this mountain. Citrakūṭa Reveals Primordial Vraja
Passage 33
देशः स एवाविरभूदादिव्रजसमाह्वयः। वनकुञ्जमनोहारी चित्रकूटमहीधरे॥३३॥
Upon Mount Citrakūṭa that very realm called primordial Vraja appeared, enchanting with its forests and bowers.

तत्र प्रकाशयामास रामेन्दुः केलिवैभवम्। दर्शयन् परमेश्वर्यं सर्वासामपि योषिताम्॥३४॥
There Rāma, moon among lovers, revealed the splendor of his play and displayed the supreme sovereignty of all those women.
Passage 35
जानक्याश्च विशेषेण त्रैलोक्यस्य च पश्यतः। ता एव रात्रयस्तत्र प्रादुरासुर्मनोहराः॥३५॥
Before Jānakī in particular, and while the three worlds watched, those same enchanting nights manifested there.
Passage 36
ता एव नृत्यगीतादिकलाश्चातिसुशोभनाः। ता एव सम्पदः सर्वाः परमाश्चर्यवर्धकाः॥३६॥
The same exceedingly beautiful arts of dance and song appeared, together with all the opulences that magnify supreme wonder.
Passage 37
इत्थं सज्जितसर्वकेलिविभवो रामो रमाकोटिभिः संयुक्तो रमया तथा परमया संसेव्यमानो भृशम्। प्रेमानन्दवपुष्मतीं च सहजामभ्याददानः करे केलीकौतुकभावहन्नरमत श्रीचित्रकूटे गिरौ॥३७॥
Thus Rāma, all the riches of play assembled around him, joined with millions of beloved women and deeply served by the supreme Ramā, took Sahajā—the embodiment of loving bliss—by the hand and delighted in wondrous līlā upon Mount Citrakūṭa.
