Passage 1
श्रीजानक्युवाच— विदितं ते करुणया यत्तत्त्वं व्रजसुभ्रुवाम्। प्राग्जन्म मम चाप्युक्तं भवताखिलवेदिना॥१॥
Śrī Jānakī said: By your grace I have learned the truth concerning the lovely-browed women of Vraja, and you, knower of all, have also told me of my former birth.
Passage 2
सहजायास्तु यत्तत्त्वं स्वरूपं यच्च यादृशम्। तत्सर्वं श्रोतुमिच्छामि त्वत्तो रघुपतेऽधुना॥२॥
Now, Lord of the Raghus, I wish to hear from you the entire truth of Sahajā—what her essential nature is and what she is like. Sahajānandinī, the Supreme Power
Passage 3
श्रीराम उवाच— सहजानन्दिनी साक्षात्परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणी। प्रमोदवनलीलेशी या नित्या परदेवता॥३॥
Śrī Rāma said: Sahajānandinī is directly the embodiment of the supreme Brahman, the eternal highest Goddess who presides over the līlā of Pramodavana.
Passage 4
सच्चिदानन्दरूपेयं प्रेमानन्दैकविग्रहा। अरूपा सर्वरूपा चाप्यनामा सर्वनामिनी॥४॥
Her nature is being, consciousness, and bliss; she is the sole embodiment of the bliss of love. Formless, she assumes every form; nameless, she bears every name.
Passage 5
तथा च व्रजदेवीनां समस्तानां च जानकि। गायत्र्याश्चैव सावित्र्याः स्वरायाश्च परश्रियः॥५॥
Jānakī, she is likewise the source of all the goddesses of Vraja, and of Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī, Svarā, and the supreme Śrī.
Passage 6
पार्वत्याश्च सरस्वत्या इन्द्राण्याश्च रतेरपि। स्वाहायाश्च स्वधायाश्च सुधायाश्च तथा भुवः॥६॥
She is the source of Pārvatī, Sarasvatī, Indrāṇī, Rati, Svāhā, Svadhā, Sudhā, and Bhū as well.
Passage 7
चन्द्रिकायाः प्रभायाश्च विकुण्ठायास्तथाप्रिये। तुष्टेः पुष्टेश्च मेधायाः प्रज्ञायाश्च तथाधिपः॥७॥
Dear one, she is also sovereign over Candrikā, Prabhā, Vikuṇṭhā, Tuṣṭi, Puṣṭi, Medhā, and Prajñā.
Passage 8
विद्यायाश्चाप्यविद्यायाः कान्तेः कीर्तेर्धृतेः स्मृतेः। समस्तानां च शक्तीनामंशिनी सहजेश्वरी॥८॥
Sahajeśvarī contains within herself Vidyā and Avidyā, beauty, fame, constancy, memory, and every power.
Passage 9
यानि कानि च रूपाणि तव वा मम वल्लभे। तानि सर्वाणि नियतमस्या एवेति चिन्तय॥९॥
Beloved, understand that every form whatsoever—whether yours or mine—certainly belongs to her alone.
Passage 10
एषैव विश्वं सृजति सृष्टानुविशति स्वयम्। एषैव रक्षयत्येतत्काले संहरते पुनः॥१०॥
She alone creates the universe and herself enters what she has created. She alone protects it and, when the time comes, withdraws it again.
Passage 11
बन्धमोक्षकरी चैषा जीवानां जीवरूपिणी। जीवातुरप्यसौ कान्ते जगतोऽनुग्रहात्मिका॥११॥
She brings both bondage and liberation to living beings and is their very life. Beloved, she is also their life-sustaining power and is the grace that blesses the world.
Passage 12
नित्यसर्गविसर्गादिदशलीलास्वरूपिणी। लक्ष्यं च लक्षणं चैषा निषेधो विधिरेव च॥१२॥
She embodies the ten eternal līlās beginning with creation and secondary creation. She is the thing defined and its definition, prohibition and injunction alike.
Passage 13
कार्यं च कारणं चैषा परं चापरमेव च। स्वसत्तयाखिलं व्याप्य नित्यमुज्जृम्भयत्यसौ॥१३॥
She is effect and cause, the higher and the lower. Pervading everything through her own being, she perpetually unfolds it.
Passage 14
सर्वेषां नामरूपे च स्वयं व्याकुरुते ह्यसौ। सदसद्वापि यद्वस्तु दृष्टमानुश्रवं तथा॥१४॥
She herself differentiates the names and forms of all. Whatever exists or does not exist, whatever is seen or known from sacred tradition—
Passage 15
तस्य सर्वस्य सर्वत्र स्थितेयमधिदेवता। अधिभूतं तथाध्यात्ममियमेव प्रतिष्ठिता॥१५॥
she is the presiding divinity of all of it, present everywhere. She alone is established as both the material sphere and the inner self.
Passage 16
विरञ्चिः पञ्चतामेति हरिर्विरमते पुनः। रुद्रो विनाशमायाति तिरोभवति पूरुषः॥१६॥
Brahmā dies, Hari ceases his activity, Rudra comes to dissolution, and the cosmic Person disappears.
Passage 17
महेन्द्राणां कोटयश्च विलीयन्ते विशेषतः। विराट् प्रलीयते काले कालो भवति निष्कलः॥१७॥
Countless great Indras dissolve; the cosmic body is absorbed at the appointed time, and time itself becomes without parts.
Passage 18
तदाप्येषा विहरति मया सार्धं समस्थिता। प्रमोदवनकुञ्जान्तरानन्दरसवर्धिनी॥१८॥
Even then she remains with me and delights in play, increasing the nectar of bliss within Pramodavana's bowers.
Passage 19
चिदानन्दमये नित्ये स्वे महिम्नि महीयते। नित्यरासविलासादिलीलोल्लासनकारिणी॥१९॥
She shines in her own eternal majesty of conscious bliss, bringing forth the splendor of the everlasting rāsa and its other līlās.
Passage 20
नादो नादान्तमयते नादान्तो लीयते मयि। तदाप्यस्याः कलं गानं विरतिं नैति जानकि॥२०॥
Sound reaches the end of sound, and the end of sound dissolves into me; even then, Jānakī, her melodious song never ceases.
Passage 21
अमूर्तश्चैव मूर्तश्च भावः सर्वो विलीयते। तदाप्यस्याः परा मूर्तिर्भासते नित्यकेलिनी॥२१॥
Every state, both unmanifest and manifest, dissolves; even then her supreme form shines forth, eternally absorbed in play. The Eternal Sarayū and Rāsa Forest
Passage 22
नित्या शरत्स्वच्छजला सरयूर्वीचिमालिनी। रत्नबद्धतटद्वन्द्वा राजहंसनिषेविता॥२२॥
The eternal Sarayū has autumn-clear water and garlands of waves; its two banks are set with jewels and visited by royal swans.
Passage 23
हंससारसचक्राह्वकादम्बकुलकेलिभूः। जलकेलिसमासक्तव्रजवामेक्षणाञ्चिता॥२३॥
It is the playground of flocks of swans, cranes, cakravākas, and waterfowl, and is adorned by Vraja's beautiful-eyed women intent upon water sports.
Passage 24
मधुमाधवलक्ष्मीश्च नित्या तत्र विराजते। संफुल्लमधुरानेकमाधवीकुञ्जमण्डिता॥२४॥
The splendor of spring and early summer shines there eternally, ornamented by many sweet, fully blossoming mādhavī bowers.
Passage 25
मकरन्दभरोन्मत्तरोलम्बकुलनादिता। नवचूताङ्कुरास्वादकलकण्ठैरकुण्ठितैः॥२५॥
It resounds with swarms of bees intoxicated by abundant nectar and with tireless cuckoos tasting fresh mango shoots.
Passage 26
पुंस्कोकिलकुलैर्घुष्टकाकलीकलनिःस्वना। चमत्कारिकलक्वाणचकोरशुकसारिकाः॥२६॥
Flocks of male cuckoos fill it with artful calls, while cakoras, parrots, and sārikās utter enchanting notes.
Passage 27
उत्फुल्लकुसुमस्तोमसंछन्नानेकभूरुहा। सुमन्दशीतलामोदिमारुतोर्मिसुसंगता॥२७॥
Its many trees are covered with masses of open flowers, and it is caressed by waves of gentle, cool, fragrant wind.
Passage 28
दोलाकेलिरसासक्तगोपीगीतकलध्वनिः। वाद्यन्मृदङ्गमुरजमञ्जुलध्वनिशालिनी॥२८॥
It carries the sweet singing of gopīs absorbed in the delight of swing-play and is rich with the lovely sound of beating mṛdaṅgas and murajas.
Passage 29
नित्यैव पूर्णिमा तत्र राकाख्या रासयोगिनी। अखण्डमण्डलोद्योतिरजनीकरमण्डिता॥२९॥
It is always the full-moon night called Rākā, fit for the rāsa and adorned by the moon's unbroken, radiant disk.
Passage 30
आनन्दवर्धिनी साक्षात्पूर्णपीयूषवर्षिणी। उदयच्चन्द्रप्रभाशोणदिग्व्योमधरणीतला॥३०॥
That night directly increases bliss and showers complete nectar; the rising moon's radiance colors the quarters, sky, and earth.
Passage 31
काश्मीररससंसिक्तरञ्जिताशेषकानना। उत्तानितचलच्चञ्चुचकोराचमितामृता॥३१॥
Every grove is tinted as though steeped in saffron's liquid hue, and cakoras drink its nectar with upraised, moving beaks.
Passage 32
उत्फुल्लकुमुदामोदवहमञ्जुलमारुता। नित्यैव रजनी तत्र गोपीहृदयरञ्जिनी॥३२॥
A lovely breeze bears the perfume of blooming night lotuses; that night is eternal there and delights the gopīs' hearts.
Passage 33
अनङ्गरङ्गरुचिरा शृङ्गाररसदीपिनी। दूतीसखीगणरहःप्रयोगपरिवर्धिनी॥३३॥
Beautiful with Love's play, it kindles the rasa of romance and fosters the secret arrangements of the messengers and circles of friends.
Passage 34
प्रियप्रेमाभिसारादिप्रकारसुखभाविनी। रसोजागरसानन्दपशुपक्षिगणाकुला॥३४॥
It brings the joy of love's trysts and every other exchange with the beloved, and teems with delighted animals and birds awakened to rasa.
Passage 35
नित्यं प्रमुदनं तच्च भासुरं सर्वकामदम्। सर्वभोगकरं साक्षात्प्रेमानन्दनिकेतनम्॥३५॥
That radiant, everlasting realm of delight grants every desire and every enjoyment; it is the very abode of love's bliss.
Passage 36
तस्मिन्नशोकवनिका संफुल्लाशोकभूरुहा। उद्यत्सौरभ्यलहरीवासिताशेषकानना॥३६॥
Within it lies an Aśoka grove whose aśoka trees are in full bloom, its rising waves of fragrance perfuming the entire forest. Sahajānandinī upon the Yogapīṭha
Passage 37
तत्र श्रीयोगपीठोत्तमवरविलसद्रत्नसिंहासनान्तः- सद्यःसंफुल्लपद्मोपरिलसिता स्निग्धसख्यष्टकेन। आत्तव्यालोलवालव्यजनपटमणिस्वर्णभूषादियुक्त- श्रीमद्धस्ताम्बुजेन प्रतिपदमुदयत्केलिनासेव्यमाना॥३७॥
There, within the jeweled throne shining at the most excellent yogapīṭha, she glows upon a newly opened lotus. At every moment she is served in ever-new play by eight loving friends whose splendid lotus hands hold waving yak-tail fans, cloths, jewels, gold ornaments, and other offerings.
Passage 38
हावैर्भावैरनेकैर्वदनविलसितैर्मन्दहासैर्विलासैः शृङ्गारैकान्तकेलीं किमपि विदधती काममुञ्जीवयन्ती। प्रेमार्द्रैर्दृक्तरङ्गैः सुतरलसरलैर्वक्रिमोपक्रमाढ्यै- राह्लादं वर्धयन्ती मम हृदि मधुरालापलीलाललामा॥३८॥
With many gestures and emotions, with the play of her face, gentle smiles, and graces, she performs an indescribably intimate amorous līlā and revives Love himself. With waves of glances softened by love—tremulous and innocent yet rich in subtle turns—she increases the delight in my heart, supreme in the play of sweet conversation.
Passage 39
चञ्चद्रक्तांशुकाढ्या स्तनकलशलसत्तारहाराभिरामा बिम्बोष्ठी तप्तचामीकररुचिरवपुःकान्तिसौरभ्यसीमा। कूजत्काञ्चीकलापावलयगुणविगलच्छ्रीर्नितम्बाम्बराढ्या ध्यातव्या सर्वसिद्ध्यै [ ] निजसहजानन्दिनीयं मदङ्के॥३९॥
Clad in a fluttering red garment, she is lovely with a starry necklace shining upon her pitcher-like breasts. Her lips are like bimba fruit, and her beautiful body glows like refined gold, the utmost limit of radiance and fragrance. Her tinkling girdle, bracelets, and trailing ornaments pour splendor over the garment at her hips. This, my own Sahajānandinī upon my lap, is to be meditated upon for every perfection.
